After 10 monts, I've finally completed the base set

You'd think I'd have enough, but nooooo, I've just started the Dwarven Batatlion expansion and I've got the Hundred Year War box right after that.

I'm no too crazy about goblins in general, so I'll probably pass on those. Can't wait for that Ogre...

Max

Awesome job! You gotta do the goblins at some point!

My question is actaully on the bases. What are you using under each unit?

Thanks! Can't wait to see your work by the way. If you've applied the same quality (which I'm sure you have) to the rest of your troops as you did for you Dwarven Battalion, then we are sure in for a visual treat. Oh and when you say almost done, are you referring to the completion of both your base sets?

Quote:

I used leftover wood panels from an IKEA white horizontal blind that I had to trim so it would fit on my kitchen door. These panels just so happen to be two troops deep so I just had to trim the width to make perfect squares in order to fit 4 troops. Then I sanded the edges to smooth them out a bit and then painted them to match the miniature bases as seen in this image:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/199356

I then fixed the flag bearer to the square base with tack putty:

http://www.dickblick.com/zz238/39/

Then I can use the flag as a support to lift and move all 4 troops at the same time. Initially, I had fixed all 4 troops to the base but this soon proved a bit overkill since it was quite a hassle to remove them in combat. All in all, this cuts the set up and put away time enormously but you must store them in formation so this obviously takes up more storage space but I think it is really worth it.

Oh and this is probably the only gaming aid I've done that wasn't made with foam core

Awesome work as usual... I had put painting my figs aside, until recently picking up The Scottish Wars and remembering where I had left off. Currently finishing off my blue and red cavalry... then all of my human base set will be complete... can't wait.

Looks like my paint scheme is close to yours, but slightly simplified. I can only imagine the time it took to do all of the smaller details you have done, such as the white fringe around the red fabric on the Heavy Cavalry. Only the patience of an evil genius could produce such detail.

devil He he. Two words: Batch process = Ex: when I did the white trim, I did it for all of them once. You have to let go of the urge of wanting to complete one miniature at a time (that was though for me) plus don't do details at the end of long painting session. You'll do a better job if you take a break and come back to it later with renewed patience and relaxed eyes.

I'm a bit reluctant with the Scottish Wars expansion since I have my plate full with the Dwarven Battalion right now but maybe I'll come round to it once I'm done with the Hundred Year War gang.

Good luck with the rest of your troops + would love to see the results.

Regards,

Max

That is just freaking amazing. Your work is truly inspiring. A

bout how many hours do you think you actually worked on this project? Or maybe a better question would be, how often would you get a painting session in and how long would it last?

Though question. Don't know, maybe 40 hours? Approx. 10-12 sessions of 3-4 hours spread over a ten month period. Oh! and my oldest sun (he's 10) just reminded my that he did black prime about 80 troops (with a brush) so thats another 3 sessions of about 2 hours each. Then add in the troop bases and banners and thats another 10 hours... So between 60-70 hours as a ball park figure would sound about right. But as I mentioned earlier, I did take long breaks (work on other projects) in order to avoid burn outs and/or loss of interest.

That would be just great! Would love to have a bit of your California weather instead of our recent -25 degree Celsius (-13 degree Fahrenheit) weather we had here in Montreal robot

I really don't play as much as I'd like to (about 10 times since I've had the game) since I'm so busy with the wife/kids, school and the house, in short = life. But BattleLore came along when I had just finished re-painting vintage Heroquest miniatures (found the game in a garbage bin!) I had just started painting again at night, when everyone was asleep (almost sound like it's wrong arrrh ) since I wanted to reconnect with the hobby I had put on the side years ago (for all the previous reasons mentioned). I dabbed a bit into WH40000/Space Marines and WH Fantasy as a teen but never really was able to get a regular group together to play so I just painted the miniatures hoping I'd play eventually and finally enjoyed that part more then actually playing the game.

Now what Battelore has given me is the opportunity to scratch that itch of painting those miniatures + the added bonus of being able to play with them in a relatively short and simple board game setting with my kids. So yes, it's well worth in and I can say I'll be quite proud of handing this down to my kids as a family heirloom

Thanks again!
Regards,
Max

Battle Lore is one of the "famous" games I dislike the most, but after seeing your miniatures painted, I really wanted to play it again. The thing is... I just closed the box just right after I opened it... my miniatures look a little bit different.

Seriously Maxime, this is the most impresive miniature painting work I've ever seen. Congratulations. You have an unique talent.

FYI: If anybody else is thinking about doing their bases the same way, take a trip to your local home improvement store (i.e. Home Depot) and go to their blinds section. They have a cutter to make custom blinds and may have scraps that are the right size, since they cut them off the ends.

Wow! I didn't expect all this feedback since BattleLore has been out for over a year now. I felt I was a bit late with my painting project and though maybe the main craze was over but it's great to see that interest is still high. Those that are still into BL seem to have the passion (and patience) that goes beyond the initial glitz, hype and release of the game. That is very encouraging and drives me even more to work on my gaming aid diagrams and of course, continue on painting.

Thanks again

Thanks Mike for the tip. I'll sleep better at night knowing that no one went ahead and bought a new IKEA blind just to cut it up into little squares

Max

All the applause is well-deserved. They look really terrific, and stand more for what each Geek can make out of their preferred game, whatever it is not just BL, to be THEIR game.

I'm using a slightly different tactic for the units; I've affixed adhesed magnets to the bottoms of all my figures, and use two different steel "unit bases" to move them around more easily. (That was stage one). I finished painting all the bases, to make gameplay easier for people (like me!) who have trouble with green and blue differentiation. That was stage two, and made gameplay immensely more enjoyable for me and everyone who has stopped by (maybe a dozen games since I finished the bases). Stage three is the minis themselves, and as you said, several MONTHS of measured progress.

Your game is inspirational! And show us any future gaming aids you create!

Quick question, though! In front of the two Irregular (green) units on the left appears to be a solo green-banner Iron Dwarf? Is that a custonized Hero or what?

I also like the Gobbo/Dwarven "mini-banners" that you made! great stuff!

I'd really like to see how your solution turned out. I'm quite happy with mine, but it does happen once in a while that a player might knock over the other 3 miniatures since there not fixed to the base.

Good luck with you painting project and thanks again for your kind comments.

Yes, that's another hero I'm working on. Him and the red one are still missing there shields, but they're still able to give orders

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/295535

Havn't figured out what's special about him yet but I'd like to think of him as an outcast, trying to help the small guy (the new recruit and the untrained). Time will tell...

You really are a persistent fellow . Honestly, I can't really come up with a reasonable price that would compensate for the time I've put into this project. I've had a lot of occasions where gamers (mostly friends) wanted me to paint miniatures for them, but every time, I'd get that strange feeling of not being able to part with them afterwards (the miniatures, not my friends ). Guess I wouldn't be a good production painter... But you can be sure I'll contact you first if ever I change my mind about selling my BL army.

Max
