Component rack made with Lego bricks for Arkham Horror and all current expansions through BGotW. I found making something like this really helped with reducing time for messing with all the components for this massive game.

The bag in the image contains the many monsters from the game. The only components that don't fit on the rack are the investigators, but my brother's custom Hercule Poirot (http://boardgamegeek.com/image/580759) and Miss Marple (http://boardgamegeek.com/image/580758) investigators make a guest appearance in the image.

I'll add a few up close pictures when I get a chance. The quality of my camera is not too great for detail at a distance, but somewhat better close-up. It is not really visible from this shot, but the tray slots are all either covered with tiles (for the cardboard components) or have bricks turned on their side using jumpers (for the cards), so the tray is nice and smooth with no studs on top (a SNOT technique for the lego builders out there).

I have tried using the lego design software a couple years ago, but I found I never get far in it before I get tired of it, perhaps because it requires visualizing 3D space on a 2D screen. This was designed free-hand, but with definite plans in mind. Has it gotten easier to use since then?

I originally only built something for the encounter cards, which could all fit on one of the big gray lego baseplates. It took a lot of black bricks...and yellow of course hidden inside since frankly, what is yellow good for, anyway? I then decided that I might as well fill out the other half of the unused space with something to hold all the rest of it. Miraculously, the remaining cards seemed to measure to fit in the back very nicely.

But I am now officially out of any more room on my table. What I will do when Innsmouth is released, I don't know.

Yeah I'm going to have to have a how to on this. Best part is that it is easily expandable. Though I'm not sure how collapsible it might be. Even more strange is how I dont want to go through the hassle, time, and cost of finding foam core, cutting it out, but buying alacarte Legos, seems like a no brainer.

Franly Im just tired of making new (larger) tuck boxes everytime a new edition comes out.

There are actually two racks (the red and the black), but they are unfortunately not any more modular or collapsable than is visible here. For instance, these aren't going to be fitting in the box!

Now, it is definitely possible to make something that is not built in one huge block (I made a stackable set of component separators for Android to fit in the box).

http://boardgamegeek.com/image/416757 and
http://boardgamegeek.com/image/416755

The process of building these is a learning experience. I expect when the next expansions come out, I might break these down and make something more modular and more vertical like a "game shelf" that leaves room for a new board, which I imagine we'll be getting with the next expansion as it seems to alternate big-small.

Yes, yes, yes.

Arkham Horror needs LOTS of cards, Arkham Horror plus some of its expansions needs LOADS of cards. Arkham Horror and all its expansions needs SHEDLOADS of cards. You wouldn't want to go to Arkham and know what was about to be coming at you.

Which raises the question - what happens to the (rather superb) components holder if they release another AH expansion?

I used to use the old dos based one myself and it was hard to use but the Lego Digital Designer http://ldd.lego.com/download/ is a bit easier to use and you can order what you make direct from Lego.

The funny part is that not all the little card types are shown...several card types are combined into larger stacks. Technically there are WAY more types than what you see there.

Yes, not all card types can get their own slip. Most of those are under the curse/blessing card at the far side. But how often are you Barred from Southside or need Local Guide? I've played a lot of solo games since setting this up and I think that even between those and the earlier games there are cards in that stack that have not yet made it to the table. For one thing I don't ever remember joining the Sheldon Gang.

If there's another small expansion, I don't think much would be needed other than some rearranging. But since I think we can expect a big one next, there won't be room for all the boards and this.

I've never used BrickLink. I just have many years of buying lego sets and tubs behind me. Eventually those sets get broken and put in a pile and the pile gets sorted and then you count out that you have enough tiles to pull this off (I'm now out of black tiles though).

And thanks, everybody, for all the comments. I will put up couple of closer images perhaps this weekend so you can see how the card slips are designed.

A new version of the card rack is uploaded over at the Innsmouth game page: http://boardgamegeek.com/image/534172 and http://boardgamegeek.com/image/534173. I don't know if I'll have enough space or color types to accommodate any more big box expansions. But I'll do my best.

This is an interesting question. My knee-jerk reaction is that it would be very expensive to make it, as it requires a lot of pieces, particularly of black and red. In the olden days of lego this would require buying lots of buckets or sets with those colors (I have a long history of purchasing the bricks, so the expense washes out over time). However nowadays you can purchase bricks by the desired number and type and color at Pick-A-Brick on the shop.lego.com site. I've never paid much attetion this myself, so perhaps some other Lego afficionado can attest to how cost effective it would be compared to buying buckets.

Unfortunately, I didn't count how many bricks were being used to build the two racks, but I am mostly familiar with the necessary pieces. Most of these are fairly ordinary, and all of them should be purchaseable from Pick-A-Brick. There are traditional bricks of 1 stud width in red and black, tiles (the ones I used varied in color, but a single color should do for anyone buying in bulk), 1x2 slope bricks in black, 1x3 slope bricks in black, a few 2x2 slope bricks in black, multi-colored plates to do the slot color-coding (this is the least crucial, I'd guess) and several 2x2 and 2x4 bricks that create the interior structure of the set. In the new Innsmouth ones there are a few arch pieces employed to where the card rack becomes veritcal.

If I find the time, perhaps I will do a rough brick counting and cost guessing later on.

This was the picture that scared me away from Arkham Horror for about a week. When I saw all the cards, I just didn't want to know about it. The real estate the whole game takes up, this was another negative, that and the fact that I didn't want to put so much effort in to such an elaborate game set-up.

The closest I thought I'd ever come to playing the game, would be if I gifted it to someone... someone such as my sister (& her bf), for the 25th of Dec perhaps. Apart of me did feel a bit evil for doing this, as it was a scheme to play a game of such unwanted complexity, I could just unload it onto someone and have them explain it to me after they've had a few lengthily plays.

Then I figured the least I could do would be to learn the basics so I could assist with the first gam, or at least know what I'm buying. It's not nearly as complicated as all the cards make it appear, though this is with all expansions. Now I'm very familiar with the game but have yet to play it, being I got the game a month before she'll receive it. I also read about Injury/Madness card (fix) and the story cards, so I added those boxes to the base game in the mean time. Oh and then I thought 5 dice wouldn't be enough either and got three sets of dice; red, green and blue.

There are more photos linked to in the comments above and also some over on mocpages.com: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/176346. When I find my camera, I plan to add some more pictures of the structure there at some point (they're not really as pertitent to Arkham Horror to upload them at bgg).

For those suggesting I use Lego Digital Designer to recreate the rack, half the work is now uploaded: http://boardgamegeek.com/image/646221/arkham-horror?commenti...

Ya I noticed a few more photos of your thing after I made my post. They were somewhere else and I'm not very good at nagivating this site yet (the gallery pics are really small on my screen, for starters; or I'd like to see 20 or so instead of 9 gallery pics at a time).

I looked at the lego online site in my country and the good news is, all the 1 unit wide pieces are very economical. I probably would try to make the card compartments at an angle so the contents are much less likely to fall out. Any suggestions for a piece to do that job?

Well, there are hinge pieces that can put the studs at the top of the bricks at angle, but I don't know if they are sold piece by piece and because they are hinged, they can be lose, so some cleverness in supporting and holding them with a back structure is needed to make them work. I'll give it some more thought.

Hmmm when I asked the question, I was thinking about those sloped pieces (like the ones you used for the sides), but now that you mentioned hinges and I read it, and then I thought about it, maybe I can use hinges right at the bottom to angle the whole contruct. Heheheheh....

What a great idea! If you do it make-up box style (or tackle box / tool box for the uber straights), then it could fold up for storage.

Very neat idea.

Thanks for the inspiration.

I've decided to give this a try - it should be easier than most solutions I've seen to update when new expansions are released. I'm already adding a bit of extra space for those expansions that have been released since you posted this.

I am using bricklink.com to find the materials and using Lego's own design tool to figure out what parts I need.

As I get parts of it done, I might even start my own thread with pictures, a part list and instructions.

Certainly it's not too hard if you're already deep into the hobby. I'm definitely interested to see the instructions and pictures as building progresses.

Unfortunately, in my case I sort of build these things in sudden bursts, so there's not much more than intuitive method and then I'm done with nothing to explain the progress.

LEGOs work out to about 10 cents per piece when purchased new...

has there been an estimate on the number of pieces yet?

I'm intrigued (and I don't own the game, but I do own some LEGOs, and might do something similar for one of my other games..)

Have you considered making a top / cover for it?
I assume you could do so just making an inverted copy
that could be placed on top. Maybe fastened with rubber straps
or perhaps even make it 'lockable' by using some legos on the
outside.

Just a thought. This is awesome for the table but could be 10 times
more awesome if it were portable and could be carried without
consequence of stuff falling out.

Oh, I have thought about it, but for my purposes, Arkham is pretty much a fixture in my place and I don't go travelling with it, so I try not to go insane over the possibilities of how to make this work.

Lego is about the only thing immune to inflation or deflation... I'm thinking investing in Lego bricks might be a good policy if deflation sets in...

I don't know about other countries (including Lego's own country, Denmark) but in the US, standard Retail price for Legos has been pretty much $0.10 per piece on average for about 30 years now. Maybe more. I find that fascinating considering how much inflation has occurred in that time.

For me, almost all my games travel since most of my friends have only a couple games each but they always want to host games at their houses. Plus the games all have to go 300 miles when we visit all the nieces and nephews on the other side of the state.

The problem with suitcase or tackle box concepts is we never know how many more expansions are coming... how big a suitcase do we have to get? Lego is brilliant that way... I've just got to figure out a way to secure it with a lid for travel that won't break apart....
