If I may make a suggestion, post both of the pictures together as one? Would be nice to see them side by side to see all the subtle differences.
Simply one of the most outstanding "portal through time" pictures I have seen in quite a while. I have looked at both pics in the full size spectrum to see the changes in in the past three years.

It's not staged!! Matthew has had his camera on a tripod, sitting in that exact location, taking pictures for three years, just waiting for this moment to arrive.
she has to love her father because she's willing to pose for it. thanks for sharing.
I suggested it but she set up the game and everything. There was no leg pulling...well with the exception of who was supposed to put the game back in the box!
Love this picture! Only proves that time is so slippery, so difficult to grasp and keep a hold on. Before you know it, you're already some years further. And it also depicts that a true gamer starts out young ;-)
One recommendation though: next time, try to wait until the sun sets correctly so you have the exact same shadows... Would make a more convincing comparison picture...
/dimi
PS : Only kidding about those shadows Now, where's that two thumbs up option?
Where did the rug go? I thought it really tied the room together.
Ha! We had the cheap rug under the chair to protect the floor from the rollers on the chair but realized that stuff would collect under the rug and the rolling action smashing the carpet on top of the debris caused more problems to the floor than not having the rug in the first place. And....my wife hated it.
Oh wow, didn't realize you did that online version of Coloretto. Good job with that, I play it at super late in the night when I can't sleep. Fun times.
Let's just cross our fingers and hope that some Estonian debutante doesn't come in here and tell us how ugly she thinks the girl is.
Uncalled for, no matter which side of that whole debacle you're on (or indeed, whether you're on a side at all). Why drag something ugly into something beautiful? They're two fantastic photographs and an interesting contrast in time. Leave it at that.
Awsome man. Glad your staying close to your daughter. Some of my best memories of my Dad are playing games. I hope I can give that gift to my children as well. I think the picture is very well executed btw. The different location of the sun etc accentuate that time has passed. Whats different between the two contribute to the overall theme. But we all look at things differently. As an art piece I like that the room has changed. An identical setting in both would indead seem contrived, since time does change things. Makes me wish I had been taking pictures of the kids playing games now. I am usually so busy wrangling that I forget to capture the moments on film.
So she's gorgeous at age 12? And age 15? If you're not a teenager you get a:
You forgot "a mom" with a daughter of comparable age. She's allowed. There's an old saying about a woman scorned ...something...something but I usually black out when trying to remember. Some trauma probably...

I tihnk it is different when a grown lady (with a husband and three children of her own around the same age) says that a 12 and/or 15 year old young lady is "gorgeous".

I almost never coment on photos but .... These are great photos. I love the sequence and await the completion of the trilogy. Your daughter is lovely in both. I have to say I am very relieved I have boys. I don't think I could handle a daughter and keep my sanity at the same time. I would very definately have to take up gun collecting.
What a great idea for a photo series! Every so often you hear of documentaries where people are filmed every few years, and it always strikes my curiosity for some reason.
Anyway, here's to hoping for another picture in 3 years to continue the cool series.
PS: Assuming that she's not a game geek herself, your daughter's a good sport for going along with this!

That was very well stated. I didn't consciously recognize the symbolism of the sunlight's position representing the passing of time with the child. Whether it was intentional or not, it really does enhance the composition now that you mention it.
Matthew, not only are you a talented programmer (I love playing Coloretto and Clans on your website/blog), a talented writer (reading your blog is always entertaining), but you are a very gifted photographer as well.
There is another picture of your daughter you posted on your blog a while ago that confirms your artistic skills :
The first time I looked at this picture, I felt like you had managed to make time stand still a few moments to take this picture.
Yes, she is very photogenic, but it takes two to make such a nice portrait.
Thanks everyone for all the nice comments. I'm quite surprised and genuinely humbled by them. My daughter is a good sport. She's not "a gamer" but will occasionally but begrudgingly play a game or two (she really likes Lexio). But in general, she'd rather be with her friends doing stuff, Facebook, etc. She used to like to sit with me and work through rules of a new game but that's "not her thing" anymore. So, the comments about time passing and your kids growing up really do hit home.
Let's just cross our fingers and hope that some Estonian debutante doesn't come in here and tell us how ugly she thinks the girl is.
Wow, you'd think all the comments from Octavian about stopping the trolling would have kicked in by now. Guess not.
Here, let me try: STOP DWELLING ON IT. It was over a freakin' year ago and has NOTHING to do with this picture. Seesh.
I am not trolling by making a very funny and topical joke. My comment had EVERYTHING to do with this particular type of image and the ensuing discussion, without fear of scolding by Matt Monin.
Also, 5 geek gold to you for every comment you can find that I made on either of the beleaguered annual "Estonian Witch Hunt" threads, although I read them both in full.
I come here to make jokes and read about gaming. Not necessarily in that order.
p.s. The 172026 34 thumbs my joke has received so far tells me it was a good one.
3 years and still no move... this is a classical example of analysis paralysis!
ROFL!!!!
OMG you made my day with this one...
Same here. Great Photos! As far as I'm concerned whether or not they're staged is irrelevant. The idea, but most importantly the execution of the idea, is terrific.
It's really amazing at that age- my daughter is turning 14 this summer, and photos of her have been catching peoples' eyes for a couple years.
We often perform in community theater together; I just warn her to let the boys know how old she really is: "How old are you? Daam- Darn, I can't tell you THAT joke!"
An amazing photo, and to have all the game bits still as they were 3 years ago as if the game or your daughter had never moved. What was the inspiration for this photo. . .were you going through an old picture album ? As other have said, here's to the next one when she's 18, might wanna set stuff up now cause it'll be here before you know it. . .
If BBG had a photo of the year contest this should be in the top 10 ! Regards Ghost

You know, I've mentioned several times over the last year that we should set up the game again and take a memorial shot. She wanted to do it but it just never materialized. The weather has been fantastic the last few days and the sun just pours through that side door and it was just time I think. She periodically asks about how many thumbs her original picture has and I think she gets a confidence boost from it. She knows that this one has been well received and she's getting a huge kick out of it.
When you put the two photos next to each other, it becomes one of those puzzles where you have to spot all the differences between the two.
For example, her hair looks darker. How did she do that? My hair seems to be signaling that it only wishes to proceed in the opposite direction, lighter and whiter...

A good enough reason to thumb a picture in its own right. Giving a picture a thumbs-up doesn't harm anybody or steal money from the poor (like you'd think it must do from the occasional post complaining about people giving thumbs to things), so if it makes someone feel good - GREAT!

I don't think people are thumbing your "joke," they are thumbing your passive attacks on someone. Look at all the harsh comments on the "witch hunt" image thread -- you'll see they get a ton of thumbs too, and clearly they weren't jokes! Two wrongs don't make a right!
Anyway, I'd like to see another pic of her in 3 more years! It is interesting how much people can change.

Yeah c'mon guys, the yanks aren't known for their humour, so you gotta give him some credit for trying.
Recycled joke, tick. Knocking someone else, tick (yes, I DO get the irony in this statement). Flogging a dead horse, tick. Getting defensive when it goes wrong, tick. Only 34 people laughing, tick.
All things considered, this is up there with Seinfeld.
Fantastic picture! Well done! It is nice to see the update.
I am ashamed to say I was a little bit slow on the uptake. My first thought on seeing the image was: "Oh, my God! They decided to censor that wonderful image by photoshopping someone else into the picture!" Then it was like "Hey, wait a minute how did they manage to 'age' the same girl and edit it in." Then is was like "Wow, nice re-creation!" Sometimes, the brain is off somewhere else and it has to be called back to see what I am seeing!
