Were they cut from 4" stock or are they glued up layers?
Wood-wood or particle board, plywood, etc?
I don't know... I just kept one in hand, and it seems to me that it was made from a single block. I'll ask to someone of the club that organized the convention...
Anyway, I know that they payed a professional woodworker.
Here are two photos in which the giant meeples are used to keep paper sheets in place, since the day was windy...
Hi guys, I'm Massimiliano aka Magomer and I'm the vice-president of Aosta Iacta Est. Aosta Iacta Est has created the big carcassonne for giocAosta. We created it using PVC (20cmx20cm) to make tiles and SOLID WOOD to make meeple (high=13cm). Solid wood has been cutted with laser saw (to give him the silhouette) and, after, "sliced". For PVC, we ordered tiles on internet. Meeples has been maded by a carpenter of Valle d'Aosta.
Hi all, sorry for the delay but I was away for holly days . I will go straight to your questions.
The meeples are made of solid wood and 13 cm high. They scale with respect to the original with the exception that they are thinner: only about 5 cm. They have been cut out by a professional woodworker using a "bindellino": a small bandsaw (something like http://www.subito.it/sega-a-nastro-bindellino-marca-dewalt-t... (first image I googled up)) and coloured with normal wood colours.
The tiles are made of PVC (5 mm thick): 25x25 cm. We scanned the original artwork at high resolution (1600 dpi) and scaled it to 25x25 cm. The image has been filtered with a blur filter otherwise on the scanned image the printing pixels were visible. The printing has been done by www.pixart.it. They offer big format digital direct printing on different solid materials, mainly for big advertisement panels (you should be able to find other similar shops). The printing resolution was 150 dpi. We arranged the tiles to fit on to 2 panels which we cut ourself. Any saw is more less good for the job but the blade should be fine grained and the rotation speed low as to avoid that the PVC splinters.
