Will do!

Since it was already so hard for us to get 7 players to commit to a game, the (Germanic) man in the middle made the event even more attractive by arranging a competition: best ethnic appearance would win a price!

Naturally, some prestige developed around this, and the fact that we scheduled it some months in advance allowed everybody to plan their look. There was also a lunch/dinner break half-way in, when everyone presented ethnic food from their respective country - this was also factored in the competition. Quite an event.

Turkey scored highly in all respects - his food was simply amazing, with several different home-made dishes, and his costume was, as you can see, quite accurate. His board position also made him the winner at the end - the actual game had suffered a little bit time-wise, and we did not get quite as far as one might have hoped. As I recall it, I was just about to rise from my modest position to conquer everyone, had we just had a couple of more turns...

My group tried this once, but our costumes were less effective and instead of an ethnic dinner break we brought national (alcoholic) drinks.

Can't remember writing the word authentic. Then she'd have to be all golden and stylized like on a French €-penny...

Well the countries represented in basic Diplomacy are England, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Austria-Hungary and Turkey, circa 1900.

Some of these I can figure out, but some I'm unsure of, my best guess is:

Back (l-r): Italy / Germany / Turkey
Front (l-r): Russia / Austria-Hungary / England / France

Ah, yes, I was going the wider interpretation of "germanic". Indeed the above order is correct.

Thanks for all the positive comments!

"Freddy Mercury" also brought medals he ceremoniously awarded the other players when showing fidelity - a lot of them of course had to be recycled as one after another of us turned on him...
