At Protospiel 2004, Kory Heath was talking about how sometimes the mechanics of a game imply the theme. For example, if you stripped Settlers of its theme and had 100 people play it, most would think it was some sort of resource/settlement game, not a game about making a pizza, where the mechanics wouldn't make any sense. Settlers Pizza has stuck in my mind ever since, and my wife and I finally had a chance to make some this weekend, using the setup on the back of the box as our template. It tasted surprizingly good!

The road and settlement pieces are four colors of bell peppers. The resource ingredients are: ore=olives, wheat=colby cheese, wood=broccoli, sheep=spinach, brick=pepperoni, desert=mushrooms. The robber was made with two whole olives and a toothpick.

I am in awe. Mark, I tip my hat to you. That is definitely one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

I want to see more Catan-themed food! Like, a Catan birthday cake you slice into hexes (that'd get messy), gingerbread Catan, hexagonal pancakes...

Yum.

Mushrooms for the desert? Do I have to gather from the desert now to gather my favourite vegetable? It's a good thing, least the desert now bears something.

AWESOME! I'd like to expand on your idea by cutting separate mini hex pizzas so you can re-arrange the board between play... Of course all that production effort will be nullified because it will invariably never survive the first game!

Very belated response, but I just found this though a SeriousEats link...
