From the way she looks and from the way he looks, I believe she does not need weapon of any kind.

I thought exactly the same thing!

I've put it down to the fact that the door opens outwards rather than inwards? Which over here is quite unusual.

Plus if it opened inwards it would make drawing it a lot more tricky perhaps?

Hide the game in the trunk of your car until the wife goes out. Then sneak out and grab the game and bring it in stowing it among all the others. Then when you let a few days go by, whip it out and when she starts to think if this is new or not, nip the thought immediately by saying "It was always here, you just didn't notice it".

Last year I tried a new trick. First the usual: "I will just have look - probably not buying..." when leaving home.

I bought a very small very cheap looking filler game - along with a normal size expensive game. Leaving the expensive game in the garage - I brought the small game with me into the castle. Moving very casual with a dissapointing voice - "I did`nt find anything interesting - I picked this from a bargain bin...."

To make it short.

I did not work...

Great comic because I understand the sentiment.

But I'm really surprised at how many people here feel like they have to deceive their spouse/SO about what they buy. If I don't feel like I can tell my wife about a game I plan on buying or have bought that's a pretty clear signal to me that I shouldn't buy it. I usually let her know ahead of time and for the occasional impulse buy I'll let her know I bought something the next time we see each other and we're talking about our day.

This might also explain why my collection is "only" in the double digits.

Ha!

The key is not to name a specific unit of time though, as that would be outright lying versus merely deception by omission and misdirection. You have to channel your inner-politician.

Doors open inwards because this puts the hinges of the door on the inside of the building. If the door opened outwards, the hinges would be on the outside, and it would be trivial for a potential burglar to pull the pins out of the hinges, remove your door, and steal your games

I don't have this problem as I don't buy that often and over the years and I never heard of single complaint. I don't comment on her new shoes either, except "yeah you look sexy in those shoes" . Bigger problem is when on Sunday I play VASSAL with my buddy on-line and my fiancee wants to do something else...though so far there are no casualties

PS: Now when I used to live with my parents when I was teenager and i bought a new PC game home....well...that's another story altogether. One tactic from me was to leave the game box (in the 90s those PC game boxes were big) in the car and put the game manual with the game CD under my jacket. Mom was always watching me like a hawk...

The best cartoon I've ever seen here!

It is part of a calendar from Days of Wonder, as is stated on top of the image.

I buy regularly from Days of Wonder, but never heard of a calendar of them. Does anyone have any information about it?

First one to make me LOL in a long time.

Upon further inspection it looks like it would not be too difficult to reach in and unplug it, then enter the house with the new game. Then plug it back in.

Depending on the technology used, it should also be possible to open the game box in the car and if need be to punch it out in the car (or at the store). Then the game would no longer be new and the detector would not go off. Again if necessary, you could even "play test" the game at the store before bringing it home.

Now if this device were to access BGG and scan the guy's collection and detect new games that way, this would be very bad indeed. Aldie, we would need a new "super secret" database to store our real collection information.

I would even have more problems than the man in the picture because
when I get a new game my hands use to sweat. This way my wife doesn´t
need a detector device because she can read my face and touch my
hands.

Anyway, I thought that I was the only one in the world who had to hide
the games. It helps me to know that there is more people (men) hidden
the games from their wives.

By the way, very very funny. It makes me think about myself.

THANKS :

The only thing worse than, "Really, another new game?" is "there is another brown box waiting on the front porch for you" then, the evil stare waiting for the reaction although she knows exactly what is in the box.

Her latest aquisitions were:

Race for the Galaxy (as a gift for me (Note: Not Birthday or Christmasgift, just gift like other people give flowers as a thank you)
Agricola (a game we both wanted)

I think the door looks weird because it opens outwards, but the guy is holding the inside knob. It's rather unusual to open a door from the outside by grabbing the inside knob.

I usually end up getting my vast majority of games either while my wife is at work or out of town. The problem is that she figured out that newer games have that 'new game smell' so that when she finds a game that she doesn't recognize, it gets a sniff test.

I've been airing out my new games ever since. shake

There must be one of those installed somewhere at home. It's one of those high tech, virtualy invisible ones though. Fortunately I have a large cupboard in the office. Otherwise, I'd probably need a bed in the office.

Priceless.

We need more cartoons of this caliber.

My wife was exactly like this. The solution was to get rid of her.

Haven't you try estimating, that a game is borrowed? ^^ It realy works!

"what's that?"
"Umm... I... Well, i borrowed it to try, 'couse... oh, you know, i didn't want to waste money..."

***

"Hey, we must buy a copy for ourselves!"
"Actualy, we don't have to..."
"No, we must, i like it and want to have my own copy"
"but you do..."

thereafter there's a little argument, but who cares, if you finally succeeded? : P

I laughed out loud.

I love the way this site handles the differences. "I even playtest with my wife (in a limited way of course)"

My girlfriend has been a great sport about my game buying. She even plays when I can drag her away from her reality TV blog.

I can totally relate to this one!! I've gone as far as having the game(s) shipped to my work, unwrapping it, "fixing" the inside of the box ( in case of a close inspection ) and take a couple other games to blend it in with.

Doors open inwards because this puts the hinges of the door on the inside of the building. If the door opened outwards, the hinges would be on the outside, and it would be trivial for a potential burglar to pull the pins out of the hinges, remove your door, and steal your games

Chris

But doors opening inwards are easier to smash in - like in the tv series...

And modern doors are equipped against burglars with these metal thingies (my vocabulary ends here) also on the hinge side (just like in a safe door).

That's quite a nice bribe you gave to her

I use that technique as well, though I think she is secretly keeping tabs of which games I have now so that she can claim, "That was not in your collection 22.6 days ago".

Heh. It was more of a funny inside joke but I will share.

I just so happened to buy $163 worth of games the day she saw this cartoon. So I told her I would give her $163 in gold for the games I bought.

It just happened to be in Geek Gold...

My thoughts exactly, and actually we had a "conversation" about this matter earlier.. =P (except wife=fiance)

Just showed this pic to her and she approved with laughter. My opinion is that this is one of the best pic among this site, in top 10 by far.

GJ Aldie, and (double) thanks for laughs!

Bingo!
The time when a grown man with his own income needs to answer to his wife about bringing home a new game (with a closet full of her shoes, clothes, etc), it's time to get a 'new wife detector'.

I don't think the problem is so much that one-half of the couple wants to buy a game and the other doesn't...

Both of them need to agree that it can be afforded at the time of purchase. No deception. No hiding like cowards...

My deal with my wife: If I splurge on something, then she can splurge on something of equal value. And vice versa. If we can't afford to splurge on two things, then we wait.
