First Impressions: Colony: As expected 10 VP and 11 cost Platinum: I was suprised to see this worth 5, I guess you are giving up a potential province buy. This brings new life to Mine. Peddler: At first it seems you'd want to reduce the cost to 4 since its worse then a market, but the true value of this card is that you can buy it for less then 8 and its worth 8 for remodel/upgrade/apprentice etc
Played this at GenCon over the weekend and was very impressed. Peddler is a great card for just that reason. It plays in your deck great if you have no other use for it. But buying it cheap (2 or 4) and then using The Bishop (Trash a card, get VP = to half its cost) to cash it in for 4VP tokens or with Forge (Trash any number of cards from your hand and get a card costing exactly their total cost) means you're really maximizing your buying power.
I loved the set. There's many alternative paths to victory and each seems equally viable.
I played a game of Prosperity at GenCon where a player played 4 worker's villages and then bought 5 peddlers for free. When he bought 4 more peddlers two turns later we all realized he'd won the game. It was closer than we'd thought it would be, but it was still an amazing move.
With the choice of platinum instead of some gemstone like diamond, Dominion's lore is firmly locked into the realm of geek fantasy. Wouldn't be surprising if monsters and dragons made an appearance soon.

Dominion is a fantasy game... I think of it as something like Game of Thrones style fantasy: there aren't magical monsters everywhere but there is magic.
But why does platinum as opposed to a gemstone make any difference? Platinum is a real metal. Gemstones are not typically used as currency because they vary too much in size and quality.

Platinum is a fancy metal, but was difficult to work and wasn't ever used for currency until the 1800s. Since it was incredibly heavy there were fears it would be used to debase gold and silver currency, and the Spanish conquistadors dumped boatloads into the deep ocean to get rid of it.
However, as every geek knows, platinum is the "better than gold" currency in practically every swords-and-sorcery fantasy game. Hence my comment.
Considering the many potentially restrictive cards in the set, it's actually nice to have a higher ceiling for profitable money. I'm not hugely excited about platinum, because it seems a bit gratuitous, but if you have multiple buys (as this set seems to make widely available) gratuitous isn't a bad thing.
Also, it's totally possible to get Peddler down to 0 with multiple buys. Actually, it seems too easy in some situation. Again, a card of opportunity, and as someone mentioned it's probably worth it at 4 and below, and rarely if ever above.
