I was under the impression that the board was meant to be set up in a more uniform way. namely a 2x4 grid of rooms. Am I mis-reading something? Maybe this is from an expansion?

It's scenario play in a 3/4 player game. You'll notice one of the teams is Red, which is an expansion color.

If I had my rulebook handy, I could even tell you which scenario it is.
