Well, I made it a couple of years ago, so the details are a bit sketchy. Basically, I enlarged an image of the board, then redrew the territories as simpler shapes. I printed that out, cut out each territory, and traced them onto a softish wood. (I think it was basswood that I used. About 1/4" thick for most of the pieces, maybe 1/2" for the "rocky" territories. I tried to make it so that the grain of the wood goes in different directions for different territories.) Cut those out on a bandsaw, or a jigsaw for some of the tighter corners (and the hole in Habbanya Ridge Flat). Once all the pieces were cut out, I used a wood burner to add the names, then stained them using various stains. These were glued to the base (stained plywood, the edges are pine or maple, I think) and then the sector lines were burned in.
The army pieces are the wooden bits from Vinci. And I use those craft gemstones, in red and yellow, for spice.
That's pretty much it! It took about a month, just working in my spare time.
You know, I send images for games that have no photo entries whatsoever and the bgg folks turn down the photos as not detailed enough. The rest of the world uploads 11 pictures of homemade boards or pictures of girls holding the box and they're accepted. Man am I crabby today or what?
That looks neat. I never thought about making my own board for anything, but seeing yours and others made for this game has certainly inspired me to really think about if any of mine would function better or simply look awesome with a custom board.
I played on this board a couple of years back and I believe it is roughly the size of standard crokinole board. After playing on it I did not want to play on the board that came with my Avalon Hill copy of the game. The board that came with the published game just seems so damn puny next to this custom one.
This board is a work of art and wish I had the skills to make one. I would love to have one of these.

I have also played on this Board, before I ever joined the Geek
I also traded my copy of Dune to David for a Steak Dinner
