2011-09-10 1 Eleanor, Eometh and Thalin

Shadowy figures are converging on Gladden Fields, activity around the river increasing. Eleanor heads south, along the coast to Anfalas, ignoring rumors of monsters in Pelargir to engage the Black Serpent in Belfalas. After waiting for her moment, Eleanor is able to make good her Retreat, reaching Morthond. Eometh rides to Isengard and with Saurman's help removes any doubt about the Ithil-Stone's fate, then defeats an Agent to complete his Starting Quest. Thalin sets off to the Blue Mountains, making it as far as the Northern Waste. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien, while the Black Serpent rides to Anfals to wait Eleanor. She arrives after a brief fight with a Flock of Crebain and the two resume their battle, each biding their time until they then launch a simultaneous Attack of Opportunity and both are defeated. Eometh braves Peril in Fangorn to consult with Saruman again, then moves to Lothlorien and removes the Plot. He continues to Dol Guldur and engages the Mouth of Sauron, defeating the minion in combat. This allows Eometh to complete his Advanced Quest. He then leaves, heading south to the Emyn Muil. Thalin crosses the Misty Mountains to reach Rivendell.

Sauron Plots at Weathertop, Aragorn starting to feel the lure of the Ring. With no minions remaining, Sauron is forced to call upon his lesser servants, spreading them across Middle-Earth, though many lurk in Mordor. Eleanor sets off for Anfalas again, once more reaching Morthond and gaining another Quest. Eometh rides to Minas Tirith after collecting favor from Dead Marshes. Thalin moves to Tharbad, crosses north to Weathertop to make use of the Green Flag Event and finally reaches Bree. Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur. Eleanor is attacked by an Agent, but she is victorious and moves to Anfalas to complete her Starting Quest, before reaching the Enedwaith Plains, where she is set upon by some raiders. Eometh rides to Osgiliath to talk with Boromir, then crosses into Mordor, facing an Orc at Mt. Doom and defeating the challenge. He enters Barad-Dur and is able to remove Sauron's Plot. Thalin reaches the Blue Mountains to complete his Starting Quest, then meets a Ranger and gets guided to Fornost.

Sauron Plots at Rivendell, while more minions arrive. Eleanor moves to the Gap of Rohan and defeats an Orc, then visits Theoden in Helm's Deep, borrowing a Horse, before riding to Isengard to complete a Quest and remove a Corruption card to boot. She braves peril in Fangorn, going after a rumor of a monster. Eometh gets tricked by an Evil Fog and on the slopes of Mt. Doom he is Ambushed by the Ringwraiths, who stab him with a Morgul-Blade, inflicting 20 dmg and defeating Eometh in a single blow. Thalin visits Bree again to collect a Favor, then hits Weathertop to remove Sauron's Plot, before making his way to Moria, completing his Advanced Quest among its empty halls. Sauron Plots at Isengard, looking to corrupt Saruman. Eleanor moves to Edoras to trade with Eometh and heads back to Isengard, facing perils along the way but able to remove the Plot. Eometh rides to Minas Tirith, seeking the Houses of Healing, Corruption weighing heavily on him. Thalin passes through Lothlorien on his way to Gladden Fields where he fight Gothmog to a draw.

Sauron Plots at Minas Tirith, shifting his focus on Denethor. Black Serpent returns through They Are Terrible and a Southron moves to engage Eleanor. Despite Dark Promises, Eleanor defeats the Southron and treks to Minas Tirith. Eometh enters the Nindalf, but his fight with the Black Serpent ends with both of them exhausted. At Gladden Fields, Gothmog defeats Thalin. Sauron has reacquired the Ithil-Stone and after discarding his Starting Plot, tempts Saruman once again. Eleanor bides her time in Minas Tirith, while the Ringwraiths defeat Eometh for the second time and Thalin takes it easy in Lothlorien.

Finale begins as all of Sauron's token have passed the Darkness Falls space. Hero Mission to kill all but two of the Minions was looking excellent during stage I, both of the early minions dead, but the return of the Black Serpent put an end to their chances of completing their Mission. Sauron's Mission to get the Black token to stage III is a success by the smallest of margins, Eometh's defeat combined with the two Plots moving it five spaces just enough to allow the token to reach stage III. Sauron wins.

2011-09-09 1 Thalin, Argalad and Beravor

Sauron is rumored to be building his armies inside Mordor. Thalin braves the perilous north on his way to the Northern Waste, becoming Isolated and squandering all his cards to reach his destination, nothing left to defeat the Snaga. Argalad's journey to Fangorn takes him as far as the Gladden Fields. Beravor has the best of the early going, first moving to Weathertop for a Green Flag Event and a chat with Aragorn for +1 Agility, then making her way to the Grey Havens, increasing her Wisdom from Gandalf, before completing her Starting Quest by defeating the Crebain. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien. Thalin fights the Snaga again and this time wins. Argalad is Ambushed by the Mouth of Sauron who whispers Dark Promises to Argalad, who becomes Wretched. Beravor makes a massive trip, first to the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest, across the north to train with Dain II, before passing through Mt. Gundabad, defeating an Orc, finally entering Rivendell.

Sauron Plots at Woodland Realm, while his minions are closing in Lothlorien and Fangorn. Thalin drags himself through Mt. Gundabad and High Pass to Rivendell, but is starting to be heavily corrupted. Argalad enters Fangorn and gets attacked by the Black Serpent and Betrayed, unable to finish off his opponent, ending his turn. Beravor is forced to sit tight in Rivendell and heal up. Stage II begins a turn early as Sauron's Red token plows ahead of the Hero token. However, a lucky Event draw allows the heroes to remove the Plot from Lothlorien. Gothmog moves south from Mt. Gundabad, while the Mouth of Sauron prepares to Ambush Argalad, Black Serpent riding off to heal. Thalin heads to Moria, where he faces the Balrog. He had a chance to kill the foe, but failed to deliver. Still, thanks to his ability, Thalin completes his Advanced Quest and enters Lothlorien. Not surprisingly, the badly wounded Argalad is defeated by the Mouth of Sauron. Beravor is heading for Lothlorien, but at Gladden Fields Gothmog's influence causes her to becomes Wretched.

Sauron Plots at Rivendell, Gothmog moving to spread Peril. Thalin gets misdirected by an Evil Fog and finds himself in Fangorn, Ambushed by the Mouth of Sauron, combat that ends in a double KO. With the Mouth finally gone, Argalad enters Fangorn, defeats the Snaga there and completes his Starting Quest, before heading north. At Gladden Fields he is attacked by a Giant Spider and fails to defeat the monster. Beravor crosses the Redhorn Gate and despite Peril, enters Rivendell to remove Sauron's Plot, before continuing on her way to the Woodland Realm, consulting with Thranduil to remove Sauron's influence from the Shadow Pool. Luckily for the Dark Lord, he is still able to Plot at Mt. Gundabad, while a Green Flag Event occurs at the Gap of Rohan, another effect moving the Red token. Thalin loses all his Favor to a Shadow card, hobbled down with six Corruption by now. He makes his maximum three Travels to reach Edoras. Argalad is attacked by a Flock of Crebain and while he defeats them, they do cost him enough cards that upon arriving in the High Pass, Argalad passes out, defeated. Beravor moves to the Iron Hills, collecting Favor from Dain II, then south to the Sea of Udun where she is able to somehow defeat a Giant Spider and remove Sauron's Starting Plot.

Saruman falls under Sauron's influence and Isengard becomes perilous. Thalin braves peril to reach the Gap of Rohan and remove the Green Flag Event, Hero and Red token tied on the Story track and now moving at the space speed. "Shire, Baggins" sees the Yellow token reach one short of the Darkness Falls space, Black token a turn behind. Argalad crosses the Misty Mountains to High Pass, only to face Gothmog in combat. Despite his best efforts, Argalad exhausts himself after dealing eight damage on the minion. Ringwraiths Ambush Beravor and defeat her. Sauron is set with his Plots, Black token moved to the Darkness Falls space by a Shadow card, guaranteeing the Finale begins next turn. Thalin is Ambushed by the Black Serpent and while he is unable the defeat the minion, Thalin survives well enough to reach Lothlorien. Event moves the Ringwraiths to the Shire. Gothmog uses his Black Breath to bring Argalad down to size, defeating him. Beravor braves peril on her way from Edoras to Minas Tirith to consult with Denethor.

Finale begins as all of Sauron's token have passed the Darkness Falls space. Hero Mission Spear of the West is surprisingly a failure, thanks to Argalad. Not that it would've mattered as Sauron's Mission was to get his Red token to stage III and it is sitting there, two spaces away from the Finale space. Sauron wins.

2011-09-08 1 Beravor, Eleanor and Eometh

There seems to be activity going on around Gladden Fields, dark figures lurking close to the river, looking for something. Beravor treks to Redhorn Gate to complete her Starting Quest. With a bit more thought into her discards, she could've come down the mountain, closer back to Bree. Eleanor sets off towards Anfalas and for once decides to try to coastal path, despite the Black Serpent waiting at Belfalas. First however, she wants to talk to Denethor at Pelargir, but she gets attacked by a Warg Rider, failing to Retreat or defeat the foe. Eometh rides to Isengard, finding no sign of Saruman, but makes quick work of the Agent that attacks. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien, while the Black Serpent rides to Pelargir to Ambush Eleanor. Beravor heads to Bree first to talk with Gandalf, but then, instead of continuing north to the Ruins of Angmar, turns south and is soon passing the Gap of Rohan, reaching Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot! Eleanor is Ambushed by the Serpent, but she drags the fight on until he exhausts and then Retreats, reaching Anfalas to complete her Starting Quest, then moving to the Enedwaith Plains. Eometh is attacked by a Flock of Crebain in Isengard, but defeats them. He rides to Dol Guldur, where he defeats and is simultaneously defeated by the Mouth of Sauron.

Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad. Beravor sets off once more, heading first to Helm's Deep to talk with Theoden and gain a Horse, then moves north as far as Eregion. Eleanor moves to Bree to complete a Quest she drew last turn, then takes refuge in Rivendell. Eometh rides to the now empty Dol Guldur to complete his Advanced Quest, then back to Lothlorien where he gains an Elven Cloak. With Eometh removing one influence from the Shadow Pool, Sauron is left unable to Plot. And his Plots continue to fall, as Beravor, after trading with Eleanor in Rivendell, moves to Mt. Gundabad past two perilous locations and removes the Plot, then faces another pair of peril on her way to the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest. Eleanor sets off for her Advanced Quest, heading straight east to the Iron Hills for training with Dain II, then south as far as the Sea of Udun where she gains a Quest to explore Rhun. Eometh hits Rhun and talks to Aragorn, then rides to Erebor and lucks out, getting rid of all three of his Corruption cards.

Sauron starts Plotting in Osgiliath, while Gothmog moves to the Ruins of Angmar, wanting a piece of Beravor. Unfortunately for the minion, Beravor proves too tough and she defeats him, then limps her weary form to Fornost. Ringwraiths Ambush Eleanor, but she shocks not only herself but them as well as she is able to defeat them. Eleanor moves to Mt. Doom, but finds a Barrow Wight too much to handle. Eometh moves back south from Erebor, facing and defeating a Giant Spider in Rhun, then moving toward Mirkwood into the Bight. Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur as the Ringwraiths set off along to the coast. Beravor heals up and removes a Corruption card, then makes her way to the Mouth of the Greyflood. Eleanor enters Barad-Dur, removing a Plot and completing her Advanced Quest, then sneaks out back to Mt. Doom, getting to move to the Sea of Udun via Sauron's Road. Eometh faces peril at Rhosgobel and Gladden Fields, but is able to persevere and remove Sauron's Starting Plot before taking refuge in Lothlorien.

Sauron Plots some more at Osgiliath, bending all his will to finding the Ring. Seeing the Ringwraiths heading her way, Beravor moves to the Old Forest to be closer to the Shire. Eleanor stumbles in an Evil Fog, finding herself in Dagorlad, Ambushed by a Cave Troll that defeats her easily. Eometh trades with Eleanor in Lothlorien and then hits Rhun to complete a Quest, before moving to Nindalf, hoping to find Boromir there. Unfortunately, a Cave Troll finds him first and Eometh is unable to defeat the monster, ending his turn. Yellow token by now passing the Hero token thanks to "Shire, Baggins" last turn, Finale set to take place a turn before the Hero token reaches the Finale space, especially with Sauron further Plotting in Woodland Realm. Ringwraiths ride all the way from Morthond to the Shire. Beravor moves to engage them, only to get distracted by rumors of monsters. She moves back to the Old Forest and retraces her steps, finally coming face to face with the Nazgul. Beravor stalls until she has an opening and hits her Execute, defeating the Ringwraiths. Beravor moves to the Grey Havens. Eleanor travels from Lothlorien to Minas Tirith, but isn't allowed into the Houses of Healing. Black Serpent Ambushes and defeats Eometh in the Nindalf, with the Witch-King guarding Osgiliath and its Plots.

Finale begins and with the Ringwraiths dead, Sauron's Mission is a failure. Heroes have only one Corruption total among them, so their Noble Blood Mission is a success. Sadly, with Sauron having dominance, it only helps to reduce the fortitude and health gains for the Ringwraiths to +1 in the final combat. Despite her victory over the Ringwraiths on the last turn, Beravor steps aside (no Execute) and Eometh is given the role of champion. Unfortunately, the Nazgul draw two Parry and one Anticipate, enabling them to defend enough against Eometh's attacks. In the end, Eometh manages 8 of 10 damage on the Ringwraiths before exhausing himself. Sauron wins.

2011-09-06 1 Eometh, Thalin and Argalad

Word is spreading of armies mustering toward Mordor, Sauron seems to be gathering his strength. Eometh rides to Isengard to talk with Saruman and then dispatches an Agent easily to complete his Starting Quest. Thalin's Quest calls on him to explore the Blue Mountains, a long trek if there ever was one. Still, he sets off and makes it as far as the High Pass. Argalad's paths to Fangorn are blocked by the Mouth of Sauron in Rhosgobel and a monster at Gladden Fields. Not that either matters much as Argalad is barely able to reach High Pass, scouting ahead to see a Snaga down the river. Sauron Plots some more at the Sea of Udun, Gollum Captured, then calls upon the Black Serpent to defend the Plots, while also spreading his influence and calling out monsters. Eometh rides through Lothlorien on his way to Dol Guldur, where he takes on the Mouth, only to fall victim of his spells, Eometh becomes Wretched. Thalin gets a bad draw is just only barely able to cross the Misty Mountains into Rivendell. Argalad continues toward Fangorn, defeating the Snaga at Gladden Fields, then reaching his destination to complete his Starting Quest, before backtracking to Lothlorien and gaining an Elven Cloak.

Sauron Plots at Woodland Realm, while Thranduil is moved to the Mouth of the Greyflood. Eometh rides back into Dol Guldur, but Mouth is ready and Eometh again becomes Wretched! Thalin makes it as far as the Shire, while Argalad, trading a Horse from Eometh is able to reach Mt. Gundabad and complete his Advanced Quest. Plots full, Sauron is content to secure his position. Eometh rides into Dol Guldur for the third time and finally he prevails against the Mouth's spells, although he is Betrayed. Still, after a drawn out battle, Eometh sneaks in with an Execute and kills off the Mouth. He completes his Advanced Quest and returns to Lothlorien. Thalin is jumped by an Agent, but makes quick work of the encounter, then completes his Starting Quest by moving to the Blue Mountains and exploring, before returning to the Shire. Argalad scouts a Snaga in High Pass and attacks, defeating the monster, then drags himself into Woodland Realm to remove the Plot. He wanted to travel further, but Argalad was feeling Hopeless.

Sauron discards his Starting Plot and prepares for the second stage Plots. Eometh makes a long trip, from Lorien to Emyn Muil, into the Bight, through Rhun, to the Iron Hills, where he trains with Dain II and finally Erebor where he gets rid of his Corruption. Thalin sets his sights on Moria, passing through Bree and Tharbad before ending in Eregion. Argalad rests and removes his Corruption, then heads south, into Rhosgobel to collect a Favor and reaches the Sea of Udun, only to find a Giant Spider there waiting for him. Argalad started the combat out of cards and his agility wasn't enough to draw the cards to beat the monster. Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad, while his minions move in to engage Argalad. Eometh makes another long journey, this time from Erebor to the Sea of Udun to challenge the Black Serpent. Our hero is able to deal nine damage before exhausting himself and getting defeated. Thalin reaches Moria, only to face off against the Balrog, not surprisingly he isn't victorious. Still, thanks to his ability, Thalin is able to complete his Advanced Quest. Argalad is Ambushed by the badly wounded Serpent, who, despite an early Charge, is defeated by Argalad, who then removes Sauron's Plot, before travelling so far he falls unconscious.

Sauron Plots in Barad-Dur, no real loss about the Plot, with the Ringwraiths moving to Mt. Doom to block off access. Eometh trades back his Horse from Argalad, rides to Pelargir to consult with Denethor, then back to Minas Tirith, trading the Favor and Horse to Argalad, before entering the Nindalf, where he fight a Cave Troll scouted by Argalad. Eometh is unable to defeat the monster, but it does leave Boromir alone in the region. Thalin gets jumped by a Giant Spider in Moria, but he defeats it and moves to Lothlorien, looking to heal. Argalad braves the peril of the Nindalf, talks with Boromir and heads to Edoras to remove Sauron's Plot from there. He continues to the Gap of Rohan to remove the Green Flag Event from there, before returning to Edoras. Sauron Plots at the Mouth of the Greyflood, looking to tempt Thranduil with the power of the ring. Eometh passes through Edoras on his way to Amon Hen, heroes preparing to cut off Sauron's chains of influence. Thalin rest and heals in Lothlorien, passing his turn there. Argalad faces peril twice on his journey to Isengard, where he fights and defeats a Southron, then consults with Saruman, before entering the Gap of Rohan for more peril.

Finale is set to take place the following turn, so Sauron keeps his Plots churning. Eometh moves to Lothlorien to trade with Thalin, then heads back to Edoras to explore and make use of a Green Flag Event. Thalin has a chance to reach the Mouth of the Greyflood, but in Fangorn he must face peril and becomes Wretched. Argalad, badly wounded, is unable to rest despite only rumors of monsters in the Gap of Rohan, so he elects to stay put. Finale starts as both the Hero token and Sauron's Yellow token reach the Finale space, tie for dominance. With nine monsters tokens out there, heroes fail their Mission, but Sauron's Mission to get the Yellow token to stage III is very much completed. Sauron wins.

2011-09-05 1 Eleanor, Argalad and Beravor

Rumors are spreading across Middle-Earth that something is foul in Isengard. Eleanor sets off towards Anfalas, passing through Rohan as the Black Serpent is blocking the coastal path. Her uneventful trip ends finally in the Gap of Rohan where she meets some Riders, getting some rest. Argalad sets his sights on the South Eaves. He reaches the location, only to encounter the Mouth of Sauron. After a drawn out battle, Argalad emerges victorious, but badly wounded. Still, he decides to consult with Aragorn, then takes on the Orc. Argalad is able to defeat the Orc to complete his Starting Quest, but is simultaneously defeated. Beravor moves to the Grey Havens and chats with Gandalf before taking on the Crebain who prove surprisingly resilient, holding off Beravor in the fight.

Sauron Plots at Lothlorien and his minions move, as do monsters. Eleanor is Ambushed by an Agent in the Gap of Rohan, but makes quick work of the foe, continuing her trip to Anfalas, where unfortunately she finds an Oliphaunt waiting. Eleanor is badly beaten. Argalad wakes up in Minas Tirith. He scouts Osgiliath for a Favor, then returns to Minas Tirith, but is unable to remove his Corruption. Beravor finally defeats the Crebain to complete here Starting Quest. Sauron is unable to Plot more, but the Black Serpent rides to Anfalas. He Ambushes Eleanor, uses Dark Promises to make her Wretched, ending Eleanor's turn before it properly even started. Argalad is still hampered by Weary Corruption and is barely able to reach Edoras, having scouted Emyn Muil and spotted a Cave Troll. Beravor does a long trip, moving from Grey Havens to Fornost, from there to the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest, then through Angmar to Mt. Gundabad, before ending up in High Pass where she helps some Beornings, removing two monster tokens and quite a bit of influence.

Beravor's actions leave Sauron once again unable to Plot. Eleanor moves to Helm's Deep for a talk with Theoden, then heads on over to Amon Hen. Argalad passes through the Gap of Rohan, defeatin a Snaga there, before reaching Tharbad, looking to make it to the Mouth of the Greyflood for a consult with Saruman on his next turn. With the aid of her Boat, Beravor does another long trek, first down the Anduin to Lothlorien, from there to Amon Hen and Emyn Muil, Troll having moved off to Nindalf. She then backtracks, trading with Eleanor before ending in Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot. Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad, looking to push the Red token some more. With the Black Serpent having ridden to Tharbad in search of Argalad, Eleanor is able to reach Anfalas unopposed and complete her Starting Quest, ending in Belfalas. Argalad is Ambushed by the Black Serpent, who stabs him with Morgul-Blade, fight ends in a stalemate as both are exhausted, but Argalad is unable to move away. Hoping help him, Beravor moves from Lothlorien to Tharbad to engage the Serpent, only to be defeated.

Sauron Plots at Nindalf, while the Ringwraiths ride from Near Harad, where they were protecting a Green Flag Event, to Belfalas to Ambush Eleanor. Utilizing their Black Breath, the Nazgul and able to deal plenty of damage on Eleanor, who barely manages to limp to Minas Tirith after the fight. Black Serpent stabs Argalad with another Morgul-Blade and this one proves too much for the elf as he is defeated. Beravor heads south from Fornost to Tharbad to engage the Black Serpent, looking to finish off the minion. Despite being Betrayed, Beravor defeats the Serpent, killing him. She then heads down to the Mouth of the Greyflood to talk with Saruman, then receives a Quest involving Gandalf. Sauron uses the Ithil-Stone and corrupts Denethor. With monsters blocking paths north out of Minas Tirith, Eleanor heads west to Edoras. Argalad comes down from Fornost to Bree for a chat with Gandalf. He continues south, scouting an Orc in the Gap of Rohan, guarding the Green Flag Event. Argalad moves in, but is tempted by Dark Promises and becomes Wretched. Beravor heads to Bree to complete her Quest, then back south to the Gap to remove the Green Flag Event, before ending up in Fangorn.

Finale almost starts, Sauron's Yellow token one short of Darkness Falls. However, Shire, Baggins guarantees the Finale will start the following turn. Event moves the Ringwraiths to the Shire and it seems Sauron will be able to complete any of his five Missions. With Gothmog in Lothlorien, the heroes attack him. First Eleanor manages to deal five damage to the minion, then Argalad moves in and defeats him. Finally Beravor takes a journey up the Anduin to Mt. Gundabad to remove Sauron's Plot. Finale starts and all of Sauron's tokens are in Stage III and the Ringwraiths are in the Shire. Heroes have completed their Mission with only the Witch-King and Ringwraiths alive of the minions, but it is of no consolation as Sauron's Mission was to get his Red token to Stage III. Sauron wins.

2011-01-11 1 Argalad and Eleanor

Sauron is Hunting for the Ring as our Heroes set out for their Starting Quests. Argalad moves to the South Eaves, but just fails to defeat the Mouth of Sauron, dealing 8 of 9 damage needed. Eleanor moves to Near Harad and combats the Black Serpent, but manages to Retreat successfully without taking a single point of damage and completes her Starting Quest. She moves to Minas Tirith. Sauron Plots at the Sea of Udun. Argalad prepares for his second combat with the Mouth when a host of Beornings rush in and defeat the Mouth. Argalad talks with Aragorn before battling the Orc to complete his Starting Quest. Eleanor consults with Denethor, then moves to Rhun for the Green Flag Event, which allows her to move to Barad-Dur, bypassing the monsters at Sea of Udun and Mt. Doom to complete her Advanced Quest. She moves to Mt. Doom and defeats the Orc there, before moving to the Plains of Gorgoroth.

Sauron fails to Plot. Argalad moves to Rhun to talk to Aragorn again, then north to the Iron Hills for the consult with Dain II before crossing Mirkwood to reach Rivendell. Eleanor rests and reaches the Sea of Udun, where she defeats a Barrow Wight and removes Sauron's Plot, before exiting Mordor to Dagorlad. Sauron Plots at Near Harad, keeping the focus on his hunt for the Ring. Argalad scouts to see a Huorn at High Pass and decides to take it on, looking to reach Mt. Gundabad. He does defeat the monster, but is unable to move to Gundabad, instead moves to Forest Road, looking to avoid getting Ambushed by Gothmog. Unfortunately, the Encounter there misdirects him and Argalad ends up at High Pass. Eleanor moves to Rhun to complete a Quest she drew, then reaches Edoras.

Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur. Gothmog moves south to High Pass and Ambushes Argalad, who manages to deal 8 of 10 damage before he is defeated. Eleanor rushes toward Barad-Dur, but makes it only to Mt. Doom. Sauron is happy with his Plots, Yellow token moving five spaces to reach Stage III. Witch-king moves to Mt. Doom. Argalad heads south, then crosses into Moria to reach Lothlorien, scouts to see a Snaga at Fangorn and moves into, defeating the monster before consulting with Saruman. Witch-king Ambushes Eleanor but fails to defeat her so she moves to Barad-Dur to remove Sauron's Plot.

Sauron Plots at Isengard, corrupting Saruman. Accounts of Isildur appear at Minas Tirith and Argalad races there, to first consult with Gandalf, then use the Green Flag Event to move the Hero token up one before consulting with Denethor to move the Hero token up another space. He then moves to Osgiliath to talk to Boromir. Evil Fog has moved Eleanor to Mt. Doom and the Witch-king makes quite work of her. Finale begins as the Yellow token reaches the Finale space. But there is no influence in the Shire and the Ringwraiths are only at Pelargir so Sauron fails his Mission. Heroes also fail their Mission as there are three monster tokens on the board. Thanks to Argalad's efforts on the previous turn, Ringwraiths are only at +2 Fortitude and Health. Eleanor steps up and after a careful initial period, she gets in a perfectly-timed Attack of Opportunity to hit the Nazgul for seven damage, putting them at 9 of 11. She holds on against their attacks and manages to finish them off. Heroes win.

Thalin finally makes it to the Blue Mountains to complete his Starting Quest, then manages to backtrack to the Grey Havens.

Sauron discards his Starting Plot. Mouth and Eometh have round two, which ends in a double-defeat. Thalin moves toward Moria, reaching Tharbad where he gains a Quest to explore Moria, nice. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien. Eometh moves to the now vacant Dol Guldur to complete his Advanced Quest before riding hard to reach Edoras. Thalin moves to Moria, completes two Quests and then moves on to Lothlorien to remove the Plot.

Sauron Plots at Lothlorien again and uses a Shadow Card to strip Thalin of one favor. Eometh rides to the Anduin, then upriver to Lothlorien to trade Thalin a favor before moving on to Amon Hen. Thalin uses his four favors to discard the Plot, then moves north, crossing the Redhorn Gate to reach Rivendell. Sauron Plots at Bree, Urgent Summons removes both Aragorn and Gandalf. Ringwraiths move to Amon Hen and Ambush Eometh, using their Black Breath. Eometh draws Wretched, not that it much matters, with 5 corruption cards he would've been at Str 1, Agi 0, a sitting duck. A massive Winter Storm hits Rivendell and Thalin decides to stay put, managing to remove his corruption card.

Finale begins as Sauron's Yellow token reaches the Finale space. Sauron's Mission to get the Red token to Stage III is a success. Sauron wins.

2011-01-09 1 Eleanor and Beravor

Black Serpent moves along the coast of Gondor, trying to beat Eleanor to Anfalas. He would've failed had Eleanor had one Plains card more in hand. As it is, Eleanor moves to Fangorn to consult with Saruman before braving the Gap of Rohan, though the rumors of a monster there prove false. Beravor heads to the Grey Havens for a talk with Gandalf, then defeats the Crebain to complete her Starting Quest. Sauron Plots again in the Sea of Udun, to go with his Starting Plot. Mouth of Sauron moves to cover access to the Plots, in case Eleanor gets any ideas, while the Black Serpent moves to Anfalas. Regardless, Eleanor moves there and puts up a truely tough fight, getting in 10 of 11 damage on the Minion, but in the end, it's not enough and she is defeated, ending up in Fornost of all places. Beravor moves through Fornost to the Ruins of Angmar where she completes her Advanced Quest and then returns to Fornost.

Sauron Plots at Lothlorien. Black Serpent heals up a bit, while the Mouth moves to the Sea of Udun and a monster appears at Tharbad. Eleanor moves to Tharbad and manages to defeat the Barrow Wight, then down to the Mouth of the Greyflood to talk with Boromir and finally all the way down to Anfalas to take on the Black Serpent again, though she again fails to defeat him. Beravor starts heading east toward Lake Esgaroth and Dain II, making her way through Rivendell all the way to the Forest Road. Black Serpent Ambushes and defeats Eleanor. For Beravor, despite all her wilderness lore, the Evil Fog still disorients her and she finds herself at the High Pass, Ambushed by a Huorn. Although she manages to defeat the monster, fight leaves her weakened and unable to travel at all.

Sauron discards his Starting Plot and increases his influece. Black Serpent heals up again and Gothmog moves to High Pass. Eleanor moves to the Trollshaws to talk to Gandalf, relocating him to Isengard and removing three influence from there via the Green Flag Event. Eleanor manages to make her way south as far as Tharbad. Gothmog Ambushes Beravor, but she fights him off and this time makes sure she can move away. She faces Peril at Forest Road, but makes it to Woodland Realm. Sauron Plots at Isengard, Saruman falling to corruption. Black Serpent leaves Anfalas to move to the Gap of Rohan, while a monster appears at Isengard and Gothmog moves to Forest Road. Thus the path open, Eleanor moves to Anfalas to complete her Starting Quest, then treks along the coast all the way to Belfalas. Beravor braves Peril at Lake Esgaroth, gains a Favor and two more from Dain, then makes her way south to Emyn Muil, before heavy rains drive her to Dagorlad.

Eleanor moves to Minas Tirith to talk to Denethor and to complete a Quest she had drawn, then south to Osgiliath to talk to Boromir, before moving to the Sea of Udun to remove Sauron's Plot and finally to Mt. Doom, looking to get past the Ringwraiths to Barad-Dur. Unfortunately, her Retreat fails and she is hammered by the Ringwraiths almost into submission. Mouth of Sauron uses the Morgul-blade against Beravor, but she survives, making her way to Lothlorien, Plot from there having been removed by Eleanor thanks to an Event card. Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur and the Ringwraiths defeats Eleanor. Beravor sits in Lothlorien, managing to get rid of her two corruption cards. She had no way to reaching both Isengard to remove the Plot AND Erebor during her turn, so she rested, Finale was starting regardless.

Finale starts as all of Sauron's tokens pass the Shadow Falls space. Sauron's Mission to get his Yellow token to Stage III is a failure, it sits at the final space of Stage II. Hero Mission to complete Starting and Advanced Quests is a failure as well, so the final combat goes ahead with the Ringwraiths at +1 Fort and Health. Beravor steps forward, but the Nazgul prove too tough for her, she gets only 4 of 10 damage needed before exhausting. Sauron wins.

2011-01-08 1 Thalin and Argalad

Rumors about corruption spreading from Isengard have reached Woodland Realm and Erebor. Thalin tries to reach Dain II in the Northern Waste, but becomes Wretched in the Peril of the Ered Mithrin. Argalad heads to the Anduin, scouts ahead to see a Snaga at the Gladden Fields, but moves in anyways, defeating the monster and gaining a Quest from his Encounter. Sauron Plots at Minas Tirith, Black Serpent apparently behind the Loss of an Heir, while the Mouth of Sauron moves from Rhosgobel to Gladden Fields to Ambush Argalad. Thalin heads back north, this time managing to brave the Perils to reach the Northern Waste, consult with Dain and then defeat the Snaga to complete his Starting Quest. Mouth attacks Argalad, but the elf isn't a pushover and manages to defeat the Minion, though he is defeated in return.

No new Plots emerge, Sauron gathering his strength. Thalin is attacked by an Agent in the Northern Waste, but makes quick work of his foe. Down through Mt. Gundabad and to the High Pass, where he fights another Snaga, another victory for Thalin. He could brave the Peril at Gladden Fields and possibly reach Lothlorien, but decides to cross the Misty Mountains to Rivendell, looking for a place to rest and heal. Argalad wakes up in Lorien after his defeat and moves to Fangorn to complete his Starting Quest and to consult with Saruman about the rumors spreading. Satisfied (or fooled) by the talk, Argalad sets off toward Mt. Gundabad, making it as far as High Pass. Sauron Plots at Helm's Deep, Black Serpent is there, lurking around Theoden. Thalin rests and heals, removing one of his corruption cards (-1 Wis), but can't move out of there, so stays put. Argalad braves Mt. Gundabad to complete his Advanced Quest, before leaving and ending at the Forest Road.

Sauron ends his Plot at Isengard. Thalin heads south to Tharbad to collect a Favor, then back up the Greyflood to Eregion and onto Moria, where he faces its Peril and completes his Advanced Quest before moving back to Eregion. Argalad moves to the South Eaves to complete his Quest and tries to reach Minas Tirith but only gets as far as Nindalf. Having relinquished his corruption on Saruman, it seems Sauron was just fooling the Free Peoples, as Saruman is now revealed, fully fallen into corruption through another of Sauron's Plots. Black Serpent is at Isengard to make sure none get close to Saruman, while a Green Flag Event is at the Gap of Rohan. Thalin moves to the Mouth of the Greyflood to consult Thranduil, reducing Sauron's influence in the Shadow Pool. Unfortunately, he is also set upon by some Raiders and takes damage. Argalad moves to Helm's Deep to remove Sauron's Plot from there, continues to the Gap of Rohan to explore there, removing the Green Flag Event and finally attacks the Black Serpent at Isengard. Unfortunately, Argalad loses his Execute card to his Cowardly corruption card and is defeated by the Minion.

Sauron Plots at Edoras, Saruman has sent Wormtongue to try and corrupt Theoden as well. Black Serpent heals up, ready for another round of fighting. Thalin barely makes it to Dunland, plains clearly not his terrain. Argalad moves to Amon Hen, facing Peril, then scouts the Plains of Rohan, seeing an Orc and blank monster. But they are on the way to Edoras, so he moves there, defeats the Orc and reaches Edoras, removing the Plot. Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur, Ringwraiths move to Mt. Doom, Witch-King moves to Sea of Udun, looking to block off any hope of removing the Plot. Mirkwood is deeply under the Shadow, Gothmog's presence spreading monsters to all reaches of the forest. Thalin moves to Isengard to take on the Black Serpent, but the Minion uses his Black Breath and bides his time and then unleashes an Attack of Opportunity and defeats Thalin, though takes six damage in return. Argalad rushes in from Edoras to try and take out the Serpent once and for all. Minion whispers Dark Promises and for the second time, Argalad loses his Execute to his Cowardly corruption, another defeat at the hands of the Serpent.

No new Plots for Sauron, Black Serpent heals twice, Ringwraiths move closer to Minas Tirith and monsters appear at Emyn Muil and Nindalf. But word spreads that the Account of Isildur has been found, by Gandalf in Minas Tirith. With his Hopeless corruption, Thalin can only Travel three times, so he decides to clear a path for Argalad. Emyn Muil's monster proves to be a rumor, but at Nindalf Thalin is attacked by a Giant Spider, which he fails to defeat. However, the path is clear to Minas Tirith. Or would be, if Argalad didn't have to face Peril and subsequently draw a corruption card at Amon Hen. As it began, so it ends, with the Wretched coming up.

Finale begins as the Hero token and Sauron's Black token reach the Finale space. Heroes fail their Mission to have at least five Favors, collectively only having one. Sauron has three Active Plots and completes his Mission. Had Argalad drawn pretty much any other corruption, he could've traded with Thalin for his one favor, taken two from Gandalf and removed the Plot from Minas Tirith, leading to a final battle. Sauron wins.

2011-01-07 1 Beravor and Eometh

With Sauron Hunting for the Ring, Beravor sets off to explore Redhorn Gate, making it there nicely and completing her Starting Quest. Eometh makes a detour to the Plains of Rohan to talk to Theoden and picks up a Favor from Helm's Deep while passing through, before reaching the Mouth of the Greyflood and completing his Starting Quest as well. Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad. Beravor heads to Bree for a chat with Gandalf, before moving to the Ruins of Angmar, looking to complete her Advanced Quest. Unfortunately, influence plus the perfect Peril draw ends her turn. Eometh moves to Isengard to discuss important matters with Saruman before ending in Fangorn.

Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur and moves the Black Serpent to Mt. Doom to guard it. Beravor sees an Evil Fog cover the land and when it disappates, she finds herself at the Ettenmoors. Beravor heads back to the Ruins of Angmar but is attacked by a Barrow Wight, failing to defeat it, ending her turn. Eometh rides to Dol Guldur to take on the Mouth of Sauron and defeats the Minion in combat, completing his Advanced Quest as well. Beravor is attacked by an Agent, but she defeats him and finally completes her Advanced Quest. Then she moves on to Mt. Gundabad, defeating an Orc before discarding Sauron's Plot and making her escape into the Northern Waste, facing Peril once more. Eometh drags his way through Rhosgobel to Gladden Fields to remove Sauron's Starting Plot and makes his way to Lothlorien, in need of some healing.

Sauron Plots at Lothlorien. Gothmog moves to the Northern Waste and Beravor is Betrayed and Ambushed by the Minion. She survives just barely, but collapses (is defeated) on her next move. Eometh rides south, looking for Theoden at Helm's Deep, but Fangorn proves perilous and he becomes Wretched. Sauron Plots at Pelargir. Beravor makes her way from Rivendell to High Pass, facing Peril, then south to Gladden Fields to collect a Favor, finally to Lothlorien where she takes a Dark Path and trades with Eometh, discarding the Plot. Eometh then faces the Peril of Fangorn another time, this time making it through, reaching Isengard to consult Saruman, onto the Gap of Rohan to remove the Green Flag Event and then through Helm's Deep and a chat with Theoden to Edoras.

Boromir has appeared at Nindalf as the Mouth of Sauron makes a return through They Are Terrible Shadow Card, right into Nindalf. Beravor moves in first, looking to weaken the Minion to allow Eometh to defeat him. She does her job well enough, unfortunately lost her Execute to one of her corruption cards. Thus, she is unable to defeat the Mouth, ending her turn. Eometh rides in, but gets a dose of the Black Breath and his reduced Str and Agi mean he too is unable to defeat the Minion. Sauron Plots at Nindalf. Beravor gets Ambushed by a Cave Troll and is defeated. Eometh faces the Mouth of again and this time defeats him, though is left with just one card in hand, none in Life Pool. Eometh consults with Boromir for +1 Str.

Finale begins as Sauron's Yellow token moves to the Finale space. Sauron's Mission to get the Red token to Stage III is a failure, as is the Hero Mission to have only two Minions on the board. Final combat begins with the Ringwraiths at +2 Fortitude and Health. Beravor's Execute might be needed, but she doesn't draw it, so instead, Eometh with his Str 7, Agi 2 steps forward. He does what he can, which is 8 of 11 damage needed, but in return, after his exhaustion, finds himself defeated as the Ringwraiths put the hurt on him. Sauron wins.

2011-01-05 1 Eleanor

Always a tough Starting Quest, the one to explore Near Harad/combat the Black Serpent, but as usual, best get it out of the way early. However, this time things go very differently. Eleanor moves through Osgiliath, removing a blank monster to token Near Harad, but in the combat, she bides her time, getting a couple of hits in while waiting for her time. And when the Serpent exhausts, it's Eleanor's turn and with a impressive Attack of Opportunity, she kills the Minion! This completes her Starting Quest, but also allows her to consult with Boromir at Near Harad and return to Minas Tirith. After the damage she took, she is forced to rest and heal, then consults with Denethor and heads to Barad-Dur via Minas Morgul and Sea of Udun, removing Sauron's Starting Plot along the way. Unfortunately for Eleanor, the peril draw is just the Barad-Dur specific card and the Mouth of Sauron appears. Eleanor runs out of cards in hand quickly, leaving the Mouth in charge. However, due to the wording of the Peril card, she still gets to explore, completing her Advanced Quest. Sauron is unable to Plot as Eleanor removed influence from the Shadow Pool. Instead, the Mouth takes his frustrations out on Eleanor and defeats her. From Minas Tirith on the following turn, Eleanor moves to Edoras, then the Plains of Rohan, defeating a Southron there, consults with Theoden and returns to Edoras.

Sauron Plots at Lothlorien and calls up monsters to block off Eleanor's access to it. Eleanor is forced to rest and heal again, but reaches Lothlorien to remove the Plot. Next turn she moves upriver, crosses through Rhosgobel into Esgaroth to train with Dain II and hardened with the dwarves trainin methods, makes her way back south, through Rhun, Dagorlad, Minas Morgul to finally stop at Osgiliath. Sauron Plots at Pelargir, removing Denethor from the board. Eleanor visits Minas Tirith to complete the Quest she drew last turn and to consult with Boromir yet again, unable to boost her Strength anymore. But the Favors come in handy in removing Sauron's Plot from Pelargir. After ending back in Minas Tirith, Eleanor moves to Emyn Muil, through Lothlorie and finally to Gladden Fields, ending there to remove Sauron's influence and prevent him from plotting against Lothlorien the following turn.

Instead Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur and moves the Mouth to Mt. Doom to guard the access to it. Eleanor crosses the Misty Mountains through Redhorn Gate to Tharbad for a favor, then south to the Gap of Rohan to remove the Green Flag Event, gaining another Quest while there. Saruman is at Fangorn, right next door, but as Eleanor moves in, a Huorn attacks. Another waiting game by Eleanor sees her triumphant in the end, but unable to move to Lothlorien, she has barely enough energy to consult with Saruman. Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad, with Gothmog appearing to guard the Plot, while the Ringwraiths head south from Minas Morgul. Eleanor moves to Weathertop to consult with Gandalf and gain the benefits of the Green Flag Event, removing a monster token (Giant Spider) from Redhorn Gate by relocating Gandalf there. Eleanor ends in Rivendell, where she rests and heals before moving to Redhorn Gate to consult with Gandalf, pushing her to 15 Favors!

Sauron is badly behind on the Story track and Plots at Lothlorien, looking easy for Eleanor to remove, but Sauron has to do something. Gothmog moves to High Pass to turn Gladden Fields perilous, but Eleanor still moves through on her way to Lothlorien to remove the Plot. Next, it's downriver to Minas Tirith and to Near Harad, where she defeats a Warg Rider and completes her Quest. Sauron Plots at Minas Tirith, looking to corrupt Denethor. He also calls up a Southron to Pelargir via a Shadow Card and then moves him to Near Harad. Ringwraiths are continuing to move toward the Shire. Eleanor is Ambushed and defeated by the Southron. Waking up at Minas Tirith, she uses six favors to remove the Plot, then moves to the Plains of Rohan to consult with Gandalf before taking refuge in Lothlorien. Sauron has pretty much no chance to catch her anymore. Ringwraiths at least make it to the Shire. Eleanor moves to Bree, then pops over to Old Forest to remove a blank monster token before making a stop at Rivendell.

Finale begins as the Hero token reaches the Finale space. Sauron's Mission is complete, Ringwraiths are in the Shire. Not that it matters as Eleanor has dominance and her Mission to finish with no more than two monster tokens is complete. Even if she hadn't completed it, victory in the final combat would've been an easy task, Ringwraiths at -4 Fortitude and Health. Hero wins.

2011-01-04 1 Argalad

Drawing the Starting Quest to fight an Orc at South Eaves isn't his best start, not with the Mouth of Sauron moving to South Eaves. However, the Event card moves Aragorn to the Mouth of the Greyflood, so consulting with him will be easier. Argalad goes through the Bight, gathering a Favor before finishing in Rhosgobel, drawing a Quest to explore Rivendell. With a bit better draw, he would've been able to reach Aragorn, but as it is, he settles for moving through High Pass, scouting the blank monster token and onto Rivendell to complete his Quest and gain an Elven Cloak. Unfortunately for Argalad, Sauron Plots and removes Aragorn. With Dain II appearing in Lake Esgaroth, Mouth heads north to cover Dain, while the Black Serpent rides to Emyn Muil. With the South Eaves now free, Argalad moves there, defeating the Orc to complete his Starting Quest. Following turn he makes camp at Gladden Fields.

Removing Sauron's influence from Gladden Fields leaves him unable to Plot anew. He counters by having an Agent attack Argalad, spreading some more Corruption. Argalad moves back to South Eaves to complete another Quest he drew, once again looking for help in Rhosgobel afterwards, not finding any. He heads to Woodland Realm and onto Forest Trail next, consulting with Thranduil, before heading home. Sauron now Plots at Lothlorien and sends an Evil Fog to confuse Argalad, who finds himself at Esgaroth, Ambushed by the Mouth of Sauron who corrupts Argalad with the dreaded Wretched, ending Argalad's turn there and then. Having recovered, Argalad finds himself in Erebor. With the Mouth still blocking Esgaroth, Argalad heads north, braving the Withered Heath and Northern Waste to reach Mt. Gundabad, avoid its perils and complete his Advanced Quest. Not willing to stay anywhere near it, he continues on, through the Ruins of Angmar, finally making a stop at Weathertop.

Sauron has been content with his Plots until now, but discards his Plot from the Mouth of the Greyflood. Gothmog moves south to block High Pass. Argalad visits Bree, then Tharbad and finally through the Gap of Rohan to discard a Green Flag Event, before reaching perilous Isengard and consulting with Saruman.. Following turn he braves the perils of Fangorn to reach Lothlorien and remove the Plot from there. Undeterred, Sauron Plots at Isengard, his corruption of Saruman ever more complete. Argalad desperately needs more Favors and sets about looking for them. First, he crosses through Moria to Tharbad to collect a Favor, then back down to the Gap of Rohan. Following turn he moves to Helm's Deep to take on a Southron, defeating the foe and consulting with Theoden, before taking a brief rest at Edoras.

Seeing his plans coming together, Sauron Plots at Minas Tirith, Saruman already in his grasp, now Denethor is the next in line. Black token moving six spaces now. Black Serpent is guarding Isengard, with a Warg Rider at Fangorn. Argalad has five Favor, but defeating the Serpent would be a tall order. Instead, seeing the Favor at Amon Hen and Minas Tirith open, he decides to try and help Denethor. Unfortunately, despite the blank monster token at Amon Hen, it is a perilous location and Argalad starts Despairing, limited to three favors. He makes his way down the Anduin to Nindalf, then finally to Minas Tirith. Gandalf shows up at Minas Tirith the following turn, allowing Argalad to gain a couple of Favors. At least his encounter allows him to discard two of his three Corruption cards.

Finale begins as the Black token reaches the Finale space, with Hero token two spaces (or one turn) back. Thanks to his final turn, Argalad completes his Noble Blood Mission of having no more than one Corruption. Sadly, it doesn't help him. Despite drawing 2/3 blank monster tokens, Sauron's Mission to get the Black token to Stage III is a success. Sauron wins.

2011-01-03 1 Thalin

With Sauron rumored to be gathering his military might, Thalin set off on his Quest to explore the Blue Mountains. But evil isn't letting him get there easily. His Arm Has Grown Long and another perilous location see Thalin run into some Orc Scouts and become Hopeless at the Northern Waste. Following turn he just reaches Rivendell with his three allowed Travel steps, though sees some more Orc Scouts at Mt. Gundabad, enough to make him Deranged. Elves don't offer much in way of help to a deranged Dwarf, not while Sauron Plots against Lothlorien. Thalin makes his way to Fornost, gaining Favor and then rests, removing his Hopeless Corruption. With a fairly sizeable hand, Thalin makes it from Fornost to the Blue Mountains to complete his Starting Quest and backtracks all the way to Bree, looking to reach Moria next turn to complete his Advanced Quest.

Meanwhile, Sauron really has it in for the Elves, Plotting against Woodland Realm as well, Red token moving now five spaces a turn! Thalin gets attacked by Crebain on his way out of Bree, but he defeats his winged foes and has just enough cards left to reach Moria, exploring it to complete his Advanced Quest after the dreaded perilous location proved surprisingly quiet. Following turn Thalin moves to Fangorn, where is had a bloody battle with a Giant Spider, just able to defeat the monster, but with no cards left in hand, all he can do is talk to Saruman for more Favors. Sauron is happy with his Plots, Red token rushing ahead of the Hero token, initiating Stage II. Free People are getting nervous of Sauron's massing of forces and Aragorn sets out to look for Gollum in the Dead Marshes. Thalin moves to Lothlorien and removes Sauron's Plot, following turn resting and healing before moving down the Anduin to Emyn Muil and heading toward Erebor, reaching as far as the Bight.

With his plans for Lothlorien foiled, Sauron invades Osgiliath, Red token back to moving four spaces. Mouth of Sauron moves from Rhosgobel to the Bight to Ambush Thalin, but he wasn't counting on the Dwarf's determination and the Minion falls in combat. Thalin makes his way through perilous Esgaroth to Erebor and consults with Dain II. He is lacking the Favors to remove the Plot from Woodland Realm, so he sets out to gather some more, finding one each in Ered Mithrin and Withered Heath, gaining one more from his Encounter at the latter. Red token reaches Stage III, one more turn and the Finale begins. Thalin is attacked by a Cave Troll and takes quite a beating, he has only enough left to move to Erebor. He tries to reach the Woodland Realm the following turn, but Esgaroth is still perilous and Thalin gains another Corruption, leaving him able to only hold three Favors, not enough to remove the Plot. In hopes of getting something positive, Thalin goes back to Erebor.

Finale begins as the Red token reaches the Finale space, Hero token still in Stage II. Sauron's Mission to get the Yellow token to Stage III is a failure, both it and the Black token still way back in Stage I. Thalin killed the Mouth of Sauron, but his Mission to Keep Minas Morgul at Bay is also a bust. Thanks to Sauron's dominance, the Ringwraiths have +6 Fortitude and Health in the final combat, basically a foregone conclusion. Thalin manages to deal three damage to the Nazgul, while taking 12 in return. Sauron wins.

2011-01-02 1 Eometh

Having been commanded to investigate the Mouth of the Greyflood, Eometh heads in that direction. Unfortunately, his goal isn't a secret from the servants of Sauron and he gets attacked by an Oliphaunt in the Gap of Rohan, badly mauled. Bloodied, he continues onwards, reaching Mouth to complete his Starting Quest, before making his way to Tharbad and collapsing. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien and is spreading his influence around Mt. Gundabad as well. Eometh wakes up in Fornost, travels to Weathertop to consult with Aragorn (+1 Agility) and pass the Green Flag Event, then back south to Isengard to talk to Saruman, before ending in Fangorn, gaining a Quest to explore Woodland Realm. From there it's a short ride to Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot before riding to Dol Guldur, looking to complete his Advanced Quest. But the Mouth of Sauron is no pushover and Eometh fails to defeat him.

Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad and Eometh finds himself in an Evil Fog, moved to Emyn Muil, where he is then Ambushed and defeated by a Cave Troll, which also eats his Horse. From Minas Tirith, Eometh makes his way now on foot through the marshes to Rohan and to Helm's Deep, consulting with Theoden to get a new Horse. No new Plots hatched by Sauron, but the Mouth of Sauron has healed back up to full health, in case Eometh is looking to come to Dol Guldur again. From Lothlorien, Eometh moves to the Forest Road, gaining a Quest to explore Rivendell. Before heading west, he takes a detour to the Iron Hills to train with Dain II, then moves to explore Woodland Realm and complete his Quest, finally reaching High Pass where a Snaga attacks him. Eometh makes quick work of the monster, but finds himself unable to cross the mountains to Rivendell.

Gothmog appears at Mt. Gundabad, Eometh a tempting target at High Pass, but Sauron's influence in the Shadow Pool has waned, so he is forced to regain it. Eometh crosses the Misty Mountains to Rivendell, completing his Quest, then onto Bree to collect a Favor, making camp in Dunland. Quick ride to Isengard to negate Sauron's influence there follows. With Eometh removing his influence, Sauron can't Plot at Isengard, forced to once again spread influence. Eometh stops over at Lothlorien to rest and heal, managing to remove his one Corruption card while there as well, in addition, he gains a Boat from the Green Flag Event, now has a full set of Items. With his hand full after only a short turn, Eometh now rides back to Dol Guldur to take on the Mouth of Sauron once again. And this time he defeats the Minion, completes his Advanced Quest and he enough left in him to ride back to Lothlorien and then Isengard.

However, Sauron isn't letting this time go unpunished and Eometh finds himself Ambushed and defeated by a Giant Spider. From Lothlorien he rides to Minas Tirith, first consulting with Gandalf to gain 2 Favor, paying three to move the Hero token one forward thanks to the Green Flag Event there, then uses his last three Favor to do the same after consulting the Denethor, gaining a Favor from his Encounter. Thranduil appears at Forest Trail, quite possibly the first time all eight characters have been in the same game. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien, but it will make no difference, the Finale will start the following turn. Eometh rides from Minas Tirith to Woodland Realm and Forest Trail to consult with Thranduil. From there, he rides east to the Iron Hills before turning north-west, Withered Heath and then Ered Mithrin, gathering Favor from both, gaining a sixth Favor from his Encounter.

Finale starts as both the Hero token and Sauron's Red token reach the Finale space. Sauron's Mission to get the Black token to Stage III is a big bust, Black token having moved just two spaces. Eometh's Mission to end with 5+ Favor is a success thanks to his impressive final two turns. Of course, it would've been a moot point if he hadn't managed to advance the Hero token by two steps during the penultimate turn. Hero wins.

2011-01-01 1 Beravor

Rumors have come from the south that Saruman is Hungry for Power. Beravor's Starting Quest takes her to the Redhorn Gate, where she gets attacked by a Snaga, but she makes quick work of the monster, not allowing it to stop her from completing her Quest. She then backtracks her way to Eregion. After a brief stop, it's off to Bree to talk to Gandalf, before moving through the north to the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest. Sauron Plots at Minas Tirith, with the Black Serpent apparently the reason for Loss of an Heir. Beravor knows little of this, but she has heard that Dain II can be found at the Mouth of the Greyflood, so after resting and healing, that's where her travels take her. She also meets a Ranger in Dunland, allowing her to get a good rest. Heading south, Beravor passes by Isengard to remove Sauron's Plot before ending in Edoras.

Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur, looking to torture Gollum. This doesn't sit well with Beravor and she heads in that direction, just barely reaching the Stronghold, before being Betrayed and attacked by an Orc. She takes quite a bit of damage, but not enough to defeat her, so despite the end to her turn, she still has the next one in line and removes the Plot, before trekking herself to the ground. Sauron hatches a Plot involving Dain II at Esgaroth and Beravor wakes up in Minas Tirith, with no recollection of how she got there. She makes a brief stop at Osgiliath to pick up a favor, then makes her way to Lothlorien. From there, it's on to Emyn Muil and to Esgaroth to remove not only Sauron's Plot, but also a blank monster token.

Sauron Plots at Lothlorien, while the Event card gives Beravor a Corruption card, but also sees her appear at Weathertop. Good thing too, since Gothmog was planning on moving to High Pass to block the path to Rivendell and Weathertop, which has a Green Flag Event and Aragorn. Beravor also drew a Quest at Esgaroth to explore Rivendell. Thanks to the Event card, she has no trouble getting down to business on the western side of the mountains. After consulting with Aragorn and gaining Favor as well as an Elven Cloak from Rivendell, Beravor takes the road through the Gap of Isen to Lothlorien to remove the Plot. Green Flag Event at the Gap of Isen, combined with Saruman at Isengard, not much to think about for Beravor. She moves to the Gap and removes the Event, consults with Saruman to gain favors and moves to Minas Tirith to remove Sauron's Plot. Following turn brings no goal which to head toward, so she just sits around in Minas Tirith.

Sauron Plots once again at Barad-Dur, having used a Shadow Card to take back the Gollum Plot. Ringwraiths move to Mt. Doom to block off access. Undeterred, Beravor treks into Mordor a second time and meets the Nazgul at Mt. Doom. Their Black Breath slows her down a bit, just enough that she "only" manages to deal 8 of 9 dmg to them, ending her turn. Ringwraith Ambush her at the start of her second turn, but with only one health left, they are no match for Beravor. She moves to Barad-Dur and gains more Corruption through Peril, but manages to remove the Plot. On the way back, she passes out at the Plains of Gorgoroth. Sauron Plots again involving Gollum, this time at the Sea of Udun. Having already used Shire, Baggins, the Yellow token is furthest for Sauron and moving the fastest as well. Still not enough to catch the Hero token though. Beravor now has four Corruption, after another Shadow Card added a new one. She moves from Minas Tirith to Belfalas to collect a favor and then back to Pelargir where she draws the Quest for the Palantir of Orthanc. Following turn she stops at Near Harad to remove a Green Flag Event, then ends in Minas Tirith. Sauron Plots one more time at Lothlorien, hoping it might come to a final battle. A Shadow Card also strips Beravor of all her remaining cards in hand, making reaching Isengard tougher. First Beravor moves to Minas Morgul to collect a Favor, then back to Minas Tirith where she lucks out with the Houses of Healing, getting to remove one Corruption. Start of her second turn, she rests and removes another Corruption. And then it's off to Isengard. However, the Black Serpent is at Nindalf and a monster token blocking Dunharrow, so Beravor is forced into taking the coastal path. And after a long trek, she spends her final two cards to just barely reach Isengard, complete the Quest and remove another Corruption.

Tokens move and the Hero token reaches the Finale space. Beravor reveals her Mission as Noble Blood (no more than 1 Corruption), which her final two turns of heroics just allowed her to pull off. Sauron probably could've blocked the coastal path with the Ringwraiths, but overlooked them in the heat of the moment. Still, had it gone to final combat, Beravor would've been a clear favourite, Ringwraiths at -4. Hero wins.

2010-03-11 1 The Odd Couple returns, as Thalin and Eleanor team up. Rumblings from Isengard suggest Saruman may be up to no good.

Thalin draws his Blue Mountains Quest, not ideal by any means. Still, with Eleanor covering the south, where Theoden pops up (in fact, the first three Event cards all relate to Rohan), there is nothing else for Thalin but to go for his Quest. He reaches the High Pass and faces Peril, but lucks out on the Corruption draw, "Careless" and he has 0 Favor. Eleanor's path to Anfalas along the coast is blocked by the Black Serpent at Pelargir. She moves to the Plains of Rohan to consult with Theoden, gaining a Horse as well as a Favor, before moving on to Helm's Deep, which proves Perilous due to "His Arm Has Grown Long" and Eleanor takes damage. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien. Thalin crosses the mountains, passes through Rivendell and camps at Weathertop. Eleanor rides to Anfalas to complete her Starting Quest, then backtracks all the way to Lothlorien, removing Sauron's Plot.

Undeterred, Sauron drops another Plot into play at Lothlorien. Thalin moves to Bree to collect a Favor, then reaches his destination, completing the Starting Quest by exploring the Blue Mountains. Not done yet, he moves to the Grey Havens, where he runs across some of Saruman's Agents, forcing Sauron to discard his one and only Plot card, ironically one involving Saruman. Thalin does receive a -1 Wisdom Corruption though. Seeing the situation nicely in hand, Eleanor races to Barad-Dur to complete her Advanced Quest, before backtracking to Mt. Doom. Sauron has no Plot cards, so can't put any into play. Thalin heads east, reaching Tharbad and gains a Quest to explore Moria, nice, since his Advanced Quest is also the same. Eleanor reaches Edoras, looking to finally heal the damage she took on the first turn.

Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad and he starts to spread his Influence heavily. Thalin receives another Corruption from a Shadow Card on Sauron's turn, then on his turn gets attacked by a Cave Troll from a Shadow Card (in what proves to be the only combat of the game). Thalin focuses on his defense, exhausting the Troll without taking too much damage. He moves to Dunland to collect a Favor, then through Eregion to Moria, where the Peril once again proves none too troublesome, allowing Thalin to complete both Quest, before moving to Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot. Finally, he ends at Amon Hen, looking to cut down on Sauron's influence in Rohan. Eleanor moves to Helm's Deep for another talk with Theoden, before exploring the Gap of Rohan to remove a Green Flag Event, finally returning the Edoras. Sauron Plots at Edoras, even though Eleanor has a ton of Favors, but she isn't looking like spending it on anything else either. Thalin joins Eleanor in Edoras, trades with her and removes the Plot, before continuing to Minas Tirith, facing Peril at Dunharrow, gaining another Corruption card, -1 Str. Eleanor does a quick ride to Isengard to consult with Saruman, then returns to Edoras.

Sauron Plots at Isengard, where Eleanor forgot to remove influence from. Thalin moves through Edoras to Fangorn, clearing a path for Eleanor (blank monster token), then takes a break in Lothlorien. Eleanor uses the Fangorn route to reach Isengard, removing Sauron's Plot, but still leaving his Starting Plot into play, before joining Thalin in Lothlorien. No new Plot for Sauron in the Plot Step, but he uses the "Ithil-Stone" to put Denethor Falls Into Madness in play during his Action Step. Ringwraiths and the Black Serpent move to Dunharrow and Nindalf to block off access to the White City. Thalin rests and removes a Corruption card in Lothlorien, not moving. Eleanor has her horse and races up the Anduin to Gladden Fields to collect a Favor, then across Mirkwood to Erebor to consult and train with Dain II, finally ending in Woodland Realm.

Sauron discards his Starting Plot (a move he should've done on the previous turn) and uses "Shire, Baggins" to move the Yellow token up. Thalin sits in Lothlorien, finally Corruption-free. Hero Mission seems clear, but there is nothing Sauron can do, while they sit in Havens. Eleanor moves back to Erebor for another training session with Dain II (she received training total of 5 times in the game), before riding hard to Dagorlad to remove a Green Flag Event from there. Sauron has 6 Influence in Barad-Dur and the Shire, Eleanor could move to Mt. Doom at cut off his influence chain, but Heroes have guaranteed their dominance, so she decides not to and joins Thalin in Lothlorien, celebrations are being prepared.

Finale begins as the Hero tokens reaches the end space. Yellow token is one short of Shadow Falls, while the Black and Red tokens are in stage III, Red three spaces from the Finale. Sauron could've gotten a tie on dominance had he discarded his Starting Plot on turn 8, then played a Yellow token Plot he had in hand on turn 9, but then Eleanor could've stomped his influence chain. Hero Mission was indeed to finish with no more than 1 Corruption, they have 0, with 6 Favors to spare as well. Sauron certainly wasn't helped by his 80% blank draw on monster tokens. Heroes win.

2010-03-08 1 Some alliances are meant last. Unaware that each has sensed the same threat to Middle-Earth, Argalad and Beravor are on a mission to protect Middle-Earth. Could it be just Saruman causing trouble, apparently he is hungry for power?

Argalad heads south, looking to reach Fangorn, but unable to do so, making it as far as Lothlorien though, receiving an Elven Cloak. Beravor moves to the Grey Havens, collecting a Favor from the Shire, before consulting with Gandalf and then making short work of the Crebain to complete here Starting Quest. Sauron Plots in Lothlorien. Argalad completes his Starting Quest in Fangorn, then keeps going south, reaching Minas Tirith. There, he Scouts the lands south, seeing the monsters as mirages only (blanks), so he takes the road through Osgiliath to Pelargir to consult with Denethor. Beravor hikes to the Ruins of Angmar and explores them, completing her Advanced Quest, before continuing to Rivendell.

Sauron Plots at the Sea of Udun and orders the Black Serpent to Pelargir to Ambush Argalad. The Minion is a tough opponent, indeed defeating Argalad in the Ambush. Beravor takes the Redhorn Gate to Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot, then back up the river and across the forest to Rhosgobel. Sauron Plots at Osgiliath. Argalad Scouts ahead and sees a Warg Rider in Osgiliath, so he moves there, looking to remove the Plot and continue to the Sea of Udun to remove the Plot from there as well. Sadly for him, the Warg Rider manages to Charge him twice, leaving Argalad unable to defeat the enemy before exhausting. Beravor crosses to the eastern side of Mirkwood, moves north to Lake Esgaroth and then Woodland Realm, consulting with Gandalf and Thranduil, before moving to the river and floating down it to Lothlorien with her Boat.

Sauron discards his Starting Plot, looking to make room for new Plots in the future. "Under the Shadow" Event sees Argalad jump to Mt. Gundabad where he is Ambushed by Gothmog with a Morgul-blade and defeated. Beravor utilizes her Boat more, moving to the Sea of Udun to remove Sauron's Plot, then back across the swamps to Nindalf, where she makes short work of the Black Serpent and finally to Edoras. Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad and the Mouth of Sauron moves to High Pass to block access, while two monster tokens block the paths across Rhudaur. Argalad moves to High Pass regardless, but fails to defeat the Mouth, getting in 8 damage (needed 9). Beravor backtracks to Nindalf to consult with Boromir, then to Osgiliath to remove the Plot and finally to Minas Tirith, where she visits the Houses of Healing.

Sauron Plots in Lothlorien once more. Gothmog moves down to High Pass, while the Mouth of Sauron moves to Mt. Gundabad. Argalad is Ambushed and Betrayed by Gothmog and once again defeated. Beravor moves to Lothlorien and removes Sauron's Plot, then up the river to High Pass, where she fights and defeats Gothmog, before finally to Mt. Gundabad, though Mouth of Sauron wants nothing to do with her. Hero token moves to Stage III and the Witch-King appears at the Ruins of Angmar. Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur and blocks High Pass with another monster token. Argalad Scouts and sees it to be a Huorn, but he moves there anyway. Sadly, his Fall Back-Attack of Opportunity combo fails as Huorn plays Block and Argalad's turn ends as he fails to defeat the monster. Beravor is Ambushed by the Witch-King and his Black Breath, leaving her barely alive, but unable to move anywhere outside his area of effect or to more so far she could defeat herself.

Sauron corrupts Saruman. Argalad is Ambushed and defeated by the Witch-King and Beravor suffers the same fate. Finale begins as the Hero and Red tokens reach the final space, while the Black and Yellow tokens pass the Shadow Falls space. Sauron's Mission was to get the Red token to Stage III and it is complete. Hero Mission was to complete Starting and Advanced Quests, which they fail, despite Argalad making three attempts at Mt. Gundabad. Sauron wins.

2010-03-03 1 E-Team (Eleanor and Eometh) is back, reinforcing the bonds between Gondor and Rohan, while also trying to stop Sauron from capturing the Ring.

Black Serpent moves to Pelargir to block Eleanor's path to Anfalas via the coastline. Thus, she is forced to take the land path, crossing into Rohan, reaching as far as the Gap of Rohan, where there has been rumors of a monster, but she finds nothing (blank token). With nothing in his way, Eometh rides to the Mouths of the Greyflood to complete his Starting Quest, backtracking to Tharbad. Sauron drops a Plot in at Lothlorien, while the Event card drops Theoden at Helm's Deep, along with Saruman and Denethor out there as well. Eleanor reaches Anfalas to complete her Starting Quest, then hikes back to Isengard, looking to consult with Saruman or at least clear a path for Eometh. She comes face to face with a Southron, failing to defeat him in combat. Eometh for his part gets surprised by an Agent at Tharbad, defeating him, but leaving him unable to reach Lothlorien via Isengard this turn. So he rides to Helm's Deep, where he fights an Orc, failing to defeat it.

Sauron Plots at Pelargir, Urgent Summons removing Denethor. Eleanor could talk to Saruman and remove either the Plot in Lothlorien or Gladden Fields, but that would also cost her time. She decides to leave the Plots to Eometh, rushing down the Anduin all the way to the Sea of Udun, hoping to reach Barad-Dur the following turn. Sadly, she takes damage in Mordor. Eometh talks to his king Theoden, then rides to Isengard to consult with Saruman, before heading to Lothlorien, removing the Plot from there. And he isn't done yet, riding hard up the Anduin, he faces Peril at Gladden Fields, collects a Favor from Rhosgobel, faces more Peril at Gladden Fields, before finally taking the Dark Path and removing Sauron's Starting Plot. Sauron Plots at Osgiliath, where Eleanor's completion of her Starting Quest dropped Boromir. Eleanor explores Barad-Dur, completing her Advanced Quest, before backtracking to the Dead Marshes, before her Encounter allows Sauron to move her to Dagorlad. Eometh rides up the river to High Pass, then across Mirkwood to Lake Esgaroth, consulting with Dain II there, taking refuge in Erebor.

Sauron Plots at the Sea of Udun, now having all Yellow token Plots in play. Ringwraiths move to Dagorlad to combat Eleanor, while Gothmog moves to High Pass, blocking the shortest path to Bree, where Aragorn and Gandalf have popped up. Ambushed by the Ringwraiths, Eleanor unleashes her secret move, Execute, slamming down the Minions hard, thanks to her Anticipate. Free for now, she moves to the Sea of Udun, removes the Plot (guarded by a blank monster), then continues south. At Osgiliath, she consults with Boromir (another blank monster), then removes the Plot from there as well, finally taking a well-deserved rest in Minas Tirith. Eometh does a hard ride to Lothlorien, facing Peril twice, due to Gothmog's influence. Sauron is unable to play any new Plots, the Hero and Yellow tokens moving 2 spaces each, tied for dominance. Ringwraiths return and then move to Bree via "They Are Terrible".Eleanor is forced to spend her turn resting and healing. Eometh rides through the Gap of Rohan to Bree, but the Ringwraiths prove too tough for him, especially with their "Black Breath" affecting him heavily. Eometh barely survives, Ringwraiths being calculating bastards, leaving him with 1 card in life pool.

More Plotting in Lothlorien for Sauron, still the Hero and Yellow tokens match pace. "Shire, Baggins" sees the the Yellow token move ahead of the Hero token, advantage Sauron. Eleanor is looking for more Favors, collects one from Near Harad, then moves to Pelargir, hoping to use Execute on the Black Serpent as well. But she doesn't draw it, not even with her use of Rest. Black Serpent deals heavy damage to her. Ringwraiths Ambush and make short work of Eometh, who also suffers an "Evil Wound". Sauron drops one more Yellow token Plot into play at Barad-Dur, now guaranteed to see the Yellow token reach the Finale space next turn. "Evil Fog" sees Eometh moved from Fornost to the North Downs, where the Witch-King is ready to Ambush him, while the Ringwraiths move to the Shire. Eleanor is Ambushed and just manages to Retreat, leaving the Black Serpent secure though wounded (at 9 dmg) in Pelargir, as she takes refuge in Minas Tirith, taking advantage of the Green Flag Event there to move the Hero token by one space. Eometh, already weakened by the Evil Wound (took 10 dmg from it after healing) deals 7 damage to the Witch-King, but is in return defeated, all the while a "Winter Storm" rages around the pair.

Finale begins as Sauron's Yellow token reaches the final space, with the Hero token one behind, courtesy of the Green Flag Event. Sadly, it proves a moot point for the Heroes, as Sauron's Mission was to get the Yellow token to Stage III and it sits in the Finale space. Sauron wins.

2010-03-01 1 Beravor and Thalin have formed a sort of northern alliance to thwart Sauron, who is hunting for the Ring.

Opening Event is I:14, which is kinda unlucky for the Heroes, since Beravor's Starting Quest already put Gandalf on the board. She hikes to the Grey Havens, consults with Gandalf and then defeats the Crebain, though takes a couple of points of damage. Thalin has drawn the Blue Mountains Quest, but with nothing promising on the horizon as far as Favors are concerned, he goes for it, reaching the Ruins of Angmar on his first turn through the northern areas of Middle-Earth. Sauron drops a Plot in at the Sea of Udun, this also moving the Yellow token (as does his Starting Plot). Beravor goes to the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest and continues on to Mt. Gundabad, looking to reach Rivendell through there, unable to had she remained on the western side of the mountains. Sadly, at Mt. Gundabad, the specific Peril is drawn, forcing a combat with an Orc, with Beravor failing to defeat the Orc. Thalin is just one Mountain card short of reaching the Blue Mountains, so he travels to the Grey Havens.

Sauron drops his third Plot involving the Yellow token in at Lake Esgaroth, removing Dain II from there. Mouth of Sauron has been moving northward and blocks the path through Mirkwood, while a monster token blocks the path to Woodland Realm. Black Serpent is guarding the Plot at the Sea of Udun. Beravor is unable to rest or heal, so moves to the Northern Waste, hoping to rest and heal next turn. Thalin completes his Starting Quest, then backtracks all the way to the Old Forest. Sauron is more than happy with his Plots, Yellow token racing ahead 5 spaces, putting the Ringwraiths and Gothmog into play. Gothmog moves to Beravor's location. Beravor is Ambushed and defeated by the Minion, finding herself in Fornost upon waking up. Thalin talks to Aragorn and Gandalf in Bree, then moves to Eregion to collect more Favor.

Yellow token moves 5 more spaces, Stage III starts and the Witch-King appears. Beravor clears a path for Thalin across the Redhorn Gap (blank monster token), facing Peril at Gladden Fields, before ending in Lothlorien. Beravor is hindered by her Corruption cards, only gaining 1 Favor max per turn and limited to 3 Favor total. Thalin doesn't have the cards to cross the mountains at the Redhorn Gap (oh the shame), but can reach Gladden Fields through Moria. The dreaded place prove quiet and Thalin completes his Advanced Quest along the way, boosting his Wisdom to 3. At Gladden Fields he removes Sauron's Starting Plot. Sadly, it's all too little, too late, the Yellow token moves still 4 spaces and reaches the Finale space.

Sauron's Mission to have 6 influence or the Ringwraiths in the Shire is a failure, while the Heroes complete theirs, still holding 5+ Favors. This allows the Hero token to move one space, leaving Sauron dominant by "only" 7, meaning the Ringwraiths weigh in at Fortitude 15, Health 16! No surprise at all then that Thalin fails to defeat them, dealing 7 damage before exhausting, leaving the Ringwraiths free to hit him back for 14 damage. Sauron wins.

Turns 2 and 3 were the critical point, with Beravor making a couple of miscalculations. Had she remained on the western side of the mountains, she wouldn't have been stuck useless for two turns and the Heroes might've gotten around to removing at least one more Plot. Turn 3 she had the option of moving until she dropped, but chose not to, overlooking the fact that the Yellow token would initiate Stage II and Gothmog appearing and moving to her would prevent resting and healing.

2010-02-26 1 Tag-team action, Middle-Earth style, as Eometh and Argalad join forces, trying to stem the rise of evil.

Sauron's Starting Plot at Gladden Fields is of no concern in the early stage. Eometh, on his way to the Mouths of the Greyflood, does a detour through Fangorn to consult with Saruman. At the Gap of Rohan, he is accosted by an Oliphaunt, not only failing to defeat it, but also taking 13 dmg in the process! Argalad's draw is a poor one, he can't even reach South Eaves, his Starting Quest location this turn, so settles for reaching Rhosgobel, where he is slowed down by a storm. Sauron drops a Plot in at Lothlorien. Eometh backtracks to Helm's Deep to consult with Theoden, then to Edoras. Argalad moves to South Eaves and battles the Mouth of Sauron, neither side managing to defeat the other.

Sauron Plots at South Eaves, the Yellow token now moving 3 spaces. Mouth of Sauron moves back to Dol Guldur, while the Black Serpent rides to South Eaves to tackle with Argalad. Eometh rides to the Mouths of the Greyflood and completes his Starting Quest. He then races back up the river, through Eregion and Moria to Lothlorien, removing Sauron's Plot. Argalad is Ambushed and defeated by the Black Serpent, ending his turn rather quick. Sauron is unable to find a new Plot to play. Eometh rides back through Moria to the Mouths again, before ending in Bree. Argalad moves back to the South Eaves from Erebor and this time defeats the Black Serpent, even though he (and the Mouth) had healed. Argalad consults with Aragorn and removes Sauron's Plot from the location. During his Encounter, he fights the Orc and the two get a double-defeat, Argalad completing his Starting Quest, but finding himself in Erebor once more.

Sauron drops another Plot at Lothlorien. Eometh rides toward Lorien, but at Fangorn is attacked by a Huorn, failing to defeat the monster. Argalad moves to Rhosgobel to collect a Favor, then to Gladden Fields, where he explores the Dark Path, before removing Sauron's Starting Plot. Sauron bends Saruman to his will, corrupting him with a Plot at Isengard. Eometh rides to Nindalf to consult with Boromir, before heading home for Edoras. Argalad moves to South Eaves to collect a Favor, then another from Emyn Muil, before ending at Nindalf.

Minas Tirith sees yet another Plot of Sauron's take hold, Black token now moving 5 spaces. Mouth of Sauron and the Ringwraiths move to block access to the White City, Mouth to Nindalf to Ambush Argalad. Eometh's hard riding has taken its toll, he is unable to reach any meaningful location, so settles for resting and healing at Edoras for the turn. Argalad's turn is equally quick, Mouth of Sauron Ambushes him, giving Argalad his 4th Corruption card, then plays "Morgul-blade" to deal 20 dmg to Argalad and defeat him. Eometh rides to Dol Guldur and completes his Advanced Quest, then continues through Lothlorien to Isengard, removing the Plot. Argalad is now horribly corrupted and moves toward Rivendell, reaching as far as Dunland.

Sauron drops a Plot at Osgiliath, removing Denethor from there and moves the Witch-King to protect that Plot. Eometh is attacked by a Cave Troll at Isengard, barely surviving, then he is defeated by his Encounter there. Argalad moves to Rivendell, but can't get rid of any Corruption.

Finale begins as the Hero token reaches the Finale space, along with the Black token. All of Sauron's tokens have also passed the Shadow Falls space. Tie for dominance, but the Heroes have failed their Mission, Sauron dropping a 3rd monster token on the last turn. Sauron on the other hand, has the Red token in Stage III, completing his Mission. Sauron wins.

2010-02-25 1 Is it the strength of Gondor that holds back the Shadow? At least Eleanor seems to think so.

Starting with the Quest to explore Near Harad or combat the Black Serpent, Eleanor heads in a totally different direction, making for Helm's Deep, before consulting with Theoden at the Plains of Rohan. Following turn, she moves to the Sea of Udun to remove Sauron's Starting Plot, ending her turn in Minas Morgul, where appropriately, she takes damage. Sauron drops a new Plot, this one affecting Minas Tirith, though only moving the Black token by 1. Eleanor makes for Osgiliath, facing a Warg Rider there, before moving on to Minas Tirith, getting a lucky break with the Houses of Healing encounter. She heads into Rohan once more, through Edoras, ending in the Gap of Rohan.

Sauron Plots at Lothlorien, but the Hero token is still gaining a lot of ground. Theoden makes another appearance, so Eleanor visits him at Helm's Deep, gaining a Horse, using it to full effect to move through Dunland (Favor), Tharbad (Favor) and Bree (Favor), before backtracking to Tharbad. Reason for stopping there is that it is closest to the Mouths of the Greyflood, where Boromir is at. Eleanor consults with him, then crosses the mountains at Moria to Lothlorien, removing Sauron's Plot yet again. This leaves Sauron with one Plot in play and unable to play more for now. Eleanor is short on Favors though, so heads out to collect more. At Gladden Fields, she is attacked by an Orc and "Betrayed", failing to defeat the monster. Following turn, she rides to the Iron Hills to consult with Dain II, ending in Erebor.

Stage II begins, Sauron once more unable to play a Plot in the Plot step. However, he uses both of his Actions on Influence, maxing the Shadow Pool and using the "Ithil-Stone" to put the Denether Corrupted Plot into play, Black token now moving 4 spaces. Eleanor rides south to the Bight (Favor), then back home to Minas Tirith. Still short of the 6 Favors needed for the Plot, she goes for her Starting Quest at last, moving to Near Harad. Black Serpent proves too tough for her and defeats her, but at least she passed her Quest. Sauron drops a third Plot involving the Black token into play, this one at Isengard. Unfortunately, the Event card places Saruman at Isengard as well. Eleanor consults with Denethor, gaining a Corruption and losing 2 Favor, before riding to the Gap of Rohan, where she fights and defeats a Southron, then explores to remove the Green Flag Event. Next turn to Isengard, passing through Peril to remove the Plot, before riding back to Minas Tirith.

Sauron works him influence at Isengard once more, Uruk-hai are on the rise. Eleanor moves to Nindalf in search of Boromir, but faces a Giant Spider, failing to defeat the monster, ending her turn. Next turn, consult with Boromir for Favors, then a hard ride to Gladden Fields for yet another Favor, ending in Lothlorien. Sauron keeps his Plots as they were, Black token one behind the Hero token, will reach the Finale space next turn, unless Eleanor can grab a Favor and reach Minas Tirith. Routes south are blocked by the Mouth of Sauron at Amon Hen and a monster at Fangorn, where a Favor can also be found. Eleanor moves to Fangorn, facing a Huorn, retreating and then moving back to collect the Favor. Her following turn, she draws just about the worst cards possible, no chance to reach Minas Tirith, so she settles for Edoras.

Sauron's Black token reaches the Finale, with the Hero token 2 spaces back. Eleanor could've done a couple of things on her last two turns differently, for one, she could've removed Sauron's Plot at Isengard, in case he has the 3 Active Plots Mission, and for another, she could've gone to Minas Tirith and taken the Dark Path, instead of backtracking to Fangorn. Eleanor has 1 Corruption, so she passes her Mission, but Sauron's Mission was to get the Black token to Stage III and it is in the Finale space. Sauron wins.

2010-02-23 1 Thalin (son of Thundin?) of Erebor sets out in search of Dain II from the Northern Waste, sightseeing his way across Middle-Earth.

Poor opening for Thalin means he can't actually reach the Northern Waste on the first turn, so he ends up at Ered Mithrin, gaining a Quest to explore Erebor. On the second turn, he makes it to his goal, only to get attacked by a Barrow Wight. Thalin proves too tough for the monster, defeating it, then consulting with Dain II, before dispatching of a Snaga to complete his Starting Quest. Sauron drops a Plot in at Mt. Gundabad, to go with his Starting Plot at Isengard and spreads more influence. Thalin hikes it to Erebor, at Withered Heath discovering that "His Arm Has Grown Long", but otherwise unhindered. Completing his Quest puts Thalin at 3 Favors, just the amount needed to remove the Plot at Mt. Gundabad, so Thalin continues on his way. At Esgaroth, he faces a Giant Spider, but defeats it and then takes refuge in Woodland Realm. Despite a Corruption that allows Sauron to draw an extra Peril card, Thalin makes it through High Pass okay and reaches Gundabad, managing to hold on to 3 Favors and remove the Plot.

Sauron drops a new Plot in at Lothlorien. Thalin is attacked by Crebain at Gundabad, but nothing major for a tough Dwarf. He crosses the mountains to make it to Rivendell, where he manages to remove one of his Corruption cards. Following turn he treks to Moria and completes his Advanced Quest, boosting his Wisdom by 1, before ending in Tharbad, looking to move to the Mouths of the Greyflood next turn, where Denethor is waiting. Sauron plays another Plot involving the Red token, this one at Osgiliath. Thalin consults with Denethor, then moves south to the Gap of Rohan. Following turn a talk with Theoden at Helm's Deep, before moving to Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot.

Sauron chooses not to play a new Plot. Thalin is looking for more Favors and moves to Amon Hen, only to meet "Orc Scouts" and become "Wretched", bouncing back to Lothlorien. But this early end to the turn leaves him with a huge hand for the following turn, which Thalin takes full advantage of. Moving to Emyn Muil, then up to Bight for a Favor, before backtracking down the Anduin and finally to Minas Tirith. Sauron has finally gotten to Saruman, with Isengard becoming Perilous. Thalin sees the trouble and moves to Edoras to collect a Favor and gains a Horse from the encounter. Next turn to Isengard, where he first removes the new Plot, then takes the Dark Path and removes Sauron's Starting Plot as well. Not yet done, Thalin rides all the way to Rivendell.

Sauron plays a Plot at the Sea of Udun, then calls upon the "Ithil-Stone" and corrupts Denethor, once more having a full Plot lineup. Thalin does a tour of the north, first to North Down for a Favor, then Bree for another and finally to Tharbad, where the Peril earns him a Corruption. Still, on the next turn, he visits the Mouths of the Greyflood again, before riding to Edoras. Sauron discards his Plot at Osgiliath, but lucks out as a Green Flag Event starts moving the Red token. Thalin moves to Minas Tirith and visits the Houses of Healing, getting rid of his last Corruption card. Next on to Osgiliath, looking for more Favors, but there is is attacked by an Oliphaunt. Thalin just manages to defeat the monster, but is left with just one card in hand, none in life pool, so moves back to Minas Tirith and is defeated, losing his Horse.

Sauron plays a Plot at Erebor, which also removes Dain II from there, with the Witch-King moving to the Sea of Udun to defend the other Ring Plot. Green Flag Event at Dagorlad is still moving the Red Token. Thalin spends the last two turns just sitting in Minas Tirith and manages to remove the Corruption card he got at the start of the battle with the Oliphaunt.

Following turn, Hero token reaches the Finale space and the Red token reaches the Shadow Falls space, with the Black and Yellow tokens already in Stage III. Both sides have completed their Mission, Thalin to finish his Starting and Advanced Quest, Sauron to have his Yellow token in Stage III. So final combat with no modifications follows, with Thalin defeating the Ringwraiths with his last Strength point before exhaustion would've set in. Hero wins.

2010-02-22 1 Beravor, Ranger of the North has sensed trouble building up for some time now and is on a Quest to find out what is behind these troubles and put a stop to them if possible.

Her first task takes her to the Grey Havens, where she faces Peril, but then consults with Gandalf, before defeating Crebain to complete her Starting Quest. Next turn, she hikes all the way to the Ruins of Angmar, which she explores without incident, completing her Advanced Quest, before travelling back south to Rivendell. Sauron Plots at Sea of Udun, to go with ruminations from Isengard as his Starting Plot. Beravor crosses the mountains to High Pass, where she quickly defeats an Orc and gains a Favor. Then back across the mountains, she reaches Bree. Following with her movement west, she continues to the Shire, taking advantage of the Green Flag Event there, before reaching the Grey Havens and using her Boat to reach Belfalas.

Sauron places Urgent Summons on Dain II at Iron Hills, once more focusing on the search for the Ring. Beravor travels to Helm's Deep, where Theoden gifts her a Horse and she finishes in Edoras, gaining more Favors. Seeing the Plot at Sea of Udun within her reach, she decides to head for it, despite 2 monster tokens in the way. Dead Marshes proves to have been a rumor of a monster only (blank), but at the Sea of Udun she faces a Giant Spider and is exhausted, failing to defeat it. This allows Stage II to start, with Gothmog and the Ringwraiths appearing, while the Black Serpent is also right next to the wounded Beravor. With dominance tied (something that would last until the end of the game), only one Event card is drawn. Sauron discards his Starting Plot. But it proves a lucky one for Beravor, allowing her to move to the Iron Hills at the cost of a Corruption card, a choice she is more than willing to take. Sauron is happy with his Plots, so focuses on spreading influence, upping the Shadow Pool to max 8. Then "They Are Terrible" sees the Black Serpent appear at Iron Hills, ready to Ambush Beravor. And Ambush he does, defeating Beravor, though the Minion takes 9 damage in return. After waking up in Erebor, Beravor moves back to the Iron Hills and this time makes sure to defeat the Minion, before removing the Plot and then backtracking to Woodland Realm.

Sauron drops another Plot into play, this on at Isengard, with the Uruk-hai on the rise. Mouth of Sauron moves in to defend the Plot at the Gap of Rohan, while a monster appears in Fangorn, with Gothmog moving south to High Pass. Beravor faces Peril twice on her way from Woodland Realm to Lothlorien, then once more at Moria, but makes it to Eregion. Her target is Bree, where Aragorn and Gandalf have been sighted, but unfortunately, she can't consult with them, having gotten the "Isolated" Corruption card on the previous turn. But Bree has another Favor, so she moves there, ready to rest and remove the Corruption next turn. This of course buys Sauron time with his Plots, he play a Plot at Lothlorien. Beravor talks to both characters, gaining Favors, then heads south toward Isengard. At the Gap of Rohan, she fights the Mouth of Sauron, gaining Corruption. Mouth proves a wily foe, surviving Beravor's attacks. Following turn, he Ambushes her and manages to defeat her, though has taken 8 damage himself. Beravor also suffers an "Evil Wound", taking 10 damage right after going back to full health at Edoras. Sauron discards his Plot at the Sea of Udun, only use the "Ithil-Stone" to corrupt Denethor and Minas Tirith, putting that Plot into play. Beravor moves to Amon Hen for a Green Flag Event, removing a Corruption card, before reaching Fangorn, where she faces a Huorn, once more failing to defeat her foe. Next turn, Crebain from a Shadow Card attack her and she just manages to survive, before resting and barely reaching Isengard to remove Sauron's Plot.

Following turn, Shadow Falls, as all of Sauron's tokens are now in Stage III. Sadly, his Mission to have 3 Active Plots in play is a bust, thanks to Beravor removing one of his Plots in the nick of time. But Sauron has dominance by 3, with Beravor failing her Mission. In the final combat, she manages to deal 7 damage to the Ringwraiths before exhausting, but that is not enough to defeat them. Sauron wins.

2010-02-21 1 Argalad of the Woodland Realm, seeking to protect Middle-Earth from evil of Mordor.

Argalad starts with a Quest to explore Fangorn, so the Mouth of Sauron moves to Rhosgobel and a monster appears at Gladden Fields, also the starting location of Sauron's Plot. Argalad heads to the river and Scouts ahead, seeing a Snaga. But there is more to this Snaga than meets the eye, as not only does he survive against Argalad, he also deals 11 damage to the Elf! Argalad manages to limp to Fangorn on his next turn to complete his Quest, before backtracking to Lothlorien, desperate already for healing. Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad, while the Mouth of Sauron moves to Gladden Fields. "Evil Fog" clears and Argalad is Ambushed by the Mouth. But the Elf fights back brilliantly, indeed defeating the Minion. But his turn doesn't consist of much else, as he barely reaches Lothlorien. And his following turn is taken up purely by healing there.

Sauron hatches another Plot, this one at Barad-Dur, with the Black Serpent riding to defend it. Argalad does a quick detour to Helm's Deep to consult with Theoden and gains a Horse. Next turn, he rides to Gladden Fields, where an Orc is now protecting the Plot. Once more an easy foe proves resilient and Argalad fails yet again to defeat a monster. Sauron has all the Plot slots full and thus far he is content with them. Argalad rides to Woodland Realm and consult with Thranduil, reducing the influence of the Shadow (Pool). Onwards, he rides to the Iron Hills, talking with Dain II, before heading back to Woodland Realm. Following turn, Argalad hits Gladden Fields to remove Sauron's Plot and finishes in Lothlorien.

Sauron drops another Plot, this one at Fangorn. Argalad follows the Anduin south, through Emyn Muil and then Nindalf, where he is attacked by a Barrow Wight and "Betrayed". Once more he fails to defeat a monster, ending his turn early. He is also now limited to 3 Travel steps on future turns. Still, after consulting with Boromir, Argalad makes it to Fangorn to remove Sauron's Plot. Sauron is forced to bide his time, focusing on getting his Plots into play next turn. Argalad is attacked by an Agent in Fangorn, but for once defeats an enemy. He stops at Isengard to talk to Saruman. Following turn, Gap of Rohan is explored to remove a Green Flag Event from there, before ending in Lothlorien, where he luckily gets to remove all three of his corruption cards.

Sauron drops a Plot into play at Isengard, corrupting Saruman, possibly by the Mouth of Sauron, who returns via "They Are Terrible". Argalad heads up the river, reaching High Pass on his first turn. On the second turn he moves to Mt. Gundabad and faces off against Gothmog, who also uses "Morgul-blade". But Argalad lays into the Minion and defeats him, though only just "survives" himself with 1 card in hand, 0 in life pool. Still, this is enough for him to complete his Advanced Quest, then use those Favors to remove the Plot, before moving on and falling over from exhaustion. Argalad wakes up in Erebor, hearing that Sauron is rumored to be Plotting at Minas Tirith. Heading south, Argalad Scouts a Cave Troll at Dagorlad and decides to take another route, ending in the Bight. Next turn, he moves to the South Eaves and completes a Quest he got from an Encouter. More Peril and Corruption at Emyn Muil, then "His Arm Has Grown Long" at Dead Marshes finally sees Argalad draw "Wretched" and he is dumped to Minas Tirith, ending his turn.

Black token races five spaces and Shadow Falls begins the Finale. Argalad's desperation assault into Mt. Gundabad helped him complete his Mission (Spear of the West), but Sauron has dominance and will win with four out of the five possible Missions, since Black and Yellow tokens are in Stage III, Ringwraiths are in the Shire (thanks to an Event card) and he has 3 Active Plots. Only the Red token isn't in Stage III, one space short of it. And Sauron's Mission turns out to be getting the Black token to Stage III. Sauron wins.

2010-02-20 1 Eometh, the brave Rider of Rohan stands alone against the forces of darkness.

His Starting Quest involves exploring the Mouths of the Greyflood, so that's where Eometh heads first, completing his Quest easily, then having no meaningful encounter. Hearing rumors that darkness is spreading up north, Eometh rides to the Ruins of Angmar, where he gains a Corruption card (-1 Wisdom) and ultimately still fails to stop Sauron from starting another Plot, Orcs in the Mountains to compliment his starting Plot which also moves the Red token. Lacking the Favors to remove the Plot from Mt. Gundabad, Eometh takes a really roundabout way arond the mountains, first to Isengard for a talk with Saruman, ending in Lothlorien where he receives a Boat from the Elves (via a Green Flag Event). Next, up the Anduin as far as High Pass, where Peril causes him to become "Careless" (lose 2 Favor), but he grabs another Favor from the location. Then onto Mt. Gundabad itself, where Eometh explore a Dark Path and successfully removes the Plot.

Sauron activates another Plot involving the Red token, this time at Osgiliath. Eometh can't rest at Mt. Gundabad and has spent a lot of cards travelling, so he barely makes it to Woodland Realm, where he finally manages to rest. Refreshed, another long ride to the Iron Hills to talk to Dain II and then down to the Sea of Udun, where Eometh removes Sauron's Starting Plot, ending his turn in Dagorlad, getting attacked by "Olog-hai". Sauron puts a Plot at Barad-Dur into play, moving the Yellow token. Black Serpent rides to Dagorlad and Eometh is Ambushed and "Betrayed", defeated by the Minion. Upon waking up, he finds he is in Erebor. Quick ride up north to collect a Favor, before finishing back in Woodland Realm again.

Sauron is still struggling to find good Plots and get them into play. Eometh rides hard down south, where several characters have appeared. At Emyn Muil, Eometh has to fight a Cave Troll and fails to defeat the monster, ending his turn prematurely. Still, at the start of his next turn, he grabs the Favor, but fails to consult the characters he wanted, due to the damage he took at the hands of the troll, so settles for just a trip to Lothlorien. Healing up, he hears that Sauron has worked his evil on Saruman, corrupting him. Eometh rides to the Gap of Rohan to remove a Green Flag Event, then ends at the Plains of Rohan, disrupting Sauron's influence chains once more. Next, to Fangorn, where both Saruman and Theoden are, but with Saruman now corrupted, Eometh finds himself "Isolated" and unable to talk to his king, so he rides back up the Anduin to Gladden Fields, further working on removing Sauron's influence.

And it works, Sauron once more unable to play at Lothlorien, so plays one at Dunharrow instead, removing Boromir. Eometh rests and removes the Corruption preventing him from consulting with characters, then does a quick Favor tour and makes it to Isengard, removing the Plot. He rides back north, this time to Rivendell, reporting on the events down south. Sauron finally gets his Plot involving Lothlorien into play, but Eometh isn't too concerned. He rides to the Mouths of the Greyflood again, collecting more Favor, ending in Dunland. Where he is beset by a fierce "Winter Storm", slowing him down considerably, he just makes it to the Gap of Rohan. Sauron uses "Shire, Baggins" to move the Yellow token two more spaces. Combined with his 2 Yellow Plots, Hero and Yellow tokens will reach the Finale next turn. Eometh goes to Isengard to consult with Gandalf, then rides to Minas Tirith, visiting the Houses of Healing and spends his time sight-seeing the great city.

Indeed, Hero and Yellow tokens reach the Finale together. Eometh has 6 Favors and his Mission was to finish with 5+, while Sauron's Mission was to get the Red token to Stage III and it is one below the Shadow Falls space. Eometh wins.

2009-11-06 1 Thalin of Erebor, taking on the mantle of defender of Middle-Earth all by himself.

Sauron, as usual against Thalin, drops plenty of influence up north. Thalin makes it to Ered Mithrin on his first turn, meeting his staple Peril in this game, Orc Scouts. Following turn he makes it to the Northern Waste, consults with Dain II and completes his Starting Quest by defeating the Snaga. With Thalin ending at Northern Waste, Sauron's influence from there goes away and he doesn't play a new Plot. Thalin heads south, meeting more Peril at Mt. Gundabad, then a Snaga at High Pass, before moving on to the Forest Trail to talk to Thranduil, removing influence from the Shadow Pool, finally on to Woodland Realm. Next turn he heads east, finishing in Dagorlad after crossing the plains.

Sauron finally gets another Plot into play, at Mt. Gundabad. Thalin faces Peril at Emyn Muil on his way to Moria to complete his Advanced Quest, gaining +1 Wisdom. Following turn, he moves to the Mouth of the Greyflood to consult with Dain again, collecting a Favor from Tharbad on the way. Sauron drops a Plot at Lothlorien. Thalin moves to Dunland on the first turn. Next turn, onto Fangorn to consult with Saruman, then to Lothlorien to remove the Plot. He also gains an Elven Cloak while there.

Unfortunately for Thalin ,Sauron drops another Plot at Lothlorien. Thalin faces a ton of Peril as he goes about collecting more Favors from Amon Hen, Emyn Muil and Bight, before backtracking to South Eaves. He is now limited to just 3 Travel steps, so he goes through Dol Guldur, but becomes Wretched. No new Plot for Sauron, as he has 3 in play, but he messes with Thalin via Evil Fog, moving him to Rhosgobel. This is followed by the Mouth of Sauron moving there, Gothmog moving to Gladden Fields and the Black Serpent moves to Dol Guldur. Things get even worse for our Hero as the Mouth Ambushes him and plays "The Black Breath", putting Thalin at 5 Corruption cards, giving him -5 Str and Agi in the combat, meaning he doesn't play any cards. And it easy prey for the Mouth, who defeats him, sending him to Woodland Realm. Thalin moves from there to Mt. Gundabad, managing just to hold on to 3 Favor to remove the Plot, but is now holding 7 Corruption.

No new Plot for Sauron. Thalin struggles on to Rivendell on his first turn, failing to get a break and remove a Corruption card. Following turn, he hits the Mouth of the Greyflood, collecting a Favor. Sauron replays the Plot at Mt. Gundabad, then the Event drawn is III:5, which sees Gothmog appear in the Shire. Sauron then plays "They Are Terrible" and moves the Ringwraiths also there. Thalin reaches Fornost with 9 Corruption, managing to remove 1. But the following turn a "Winter Storm" hits and he can't even reach the Shire.

Finale starts, with the Red token hitting the final space. And Sauron's Mission is complete, as the Ringwraiths are sitting in the Shire. Thalin's Mission was to finish with no more than 1 Corruption card, which he totally blew, finishing with 8. Sauron wins.

2009-11-04 1 Argalad and Beravor teaming up, looking to curb the rise of Sauron.

Argalad gets a monster first turn. With the Event drawn being I:13, he travels to Rhun to consult with Aragorn, takes advantage of the Green Flag Event and zaps over to Fangorn to complete his Starting Quest, from there he continues to Isengard to remove Sauron's Starting Plot and finishes in Dunland, where he gains 2 Favors from his encounter. Beravor has an alltogether standard opening turn, heading to the Grey Havens and defeating the Crebain to complete her Starting Quest. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien. Argalad slows down as the cards aren't good enough to allow him to travel far, so he decides to move to Rivendell. Beravor hits the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest, then onto Mt. Gundabad, but the Peril there forces her to discard the remaining 2 cards in her hand, leaving her stranded there, as her plan was to attack the Orc at High Pass.

Sauron puts a Plot into play at the Sea of Udun. Argalad crosses the mountains and combats the Orc, defeating it, although he does take his share of damage. Onto Mt. Gundabad to complete his Advanced Quest, finally to the Northern Waste, with 0 cards in hand, just 1 card left in Life Pool! Beravor moves back across the north, reaching Fornost. Argalad's presense in the Northern Waste does remove 3 influence from there, but Sauron replaces them, looking to play the Orcs in the Mountains Plot on future turns. Argalad barely makes it to Ered Mithrin after resting, but he is still in a bad shape. Beravor moves to Tharbad, then the Mouth of the Greyflood to talk with Dain II, before ending in Dunland, gaining a Quest to explore Moria.

Sauron finally gets the Plot into play at Mt. Gundabad. Argalad is defeated by a Giant Spider from a Shadow Card. Beravor moves to Moria and completes her Quest, then to Lorien to remove Sauron's Plot from there, before moving south to Nindalf. Sauron manages to corrupt Saruman. Boromir appears in Nindalf. Argalad moves from Erebor to Rhun and then onto Gladden Fields. Ringwraiths are guarding the Green Flag Event at Near Harad, so Beravor moves through Minas Morgul to the Sea of Udun, defeating the Barrow Wight guarding the Plot, before removing it. She finishes at Mt. Doom, gaining a Quest to explore Rhun, also placing Aragorn there.

Sauron plays a new Plot, this one at Isengard, moving the Red token 3. Argalad moves to Rhun and takes on the Cave Troll there. He fails to defeat the monster, but opens the way for Beravor, who moves there, consults with Aragorn, completes the Quest and then finishes in the Bight. After moving 6 spaces, the Red token stops 1 space short of the Finale (if the Mt. Gundabad Plot had come out a turn sooner...). Argalad fights Crebain from a Shadow Card, before moving to the Bight. Beravor moves to Minas Tirith in hopes of removing her -1 Agility Corruption, but wasn't to be.

Finale starts with the Hero token still 2 spaces from the final space, where Sauron's Red token is sitting. Black and Yellow tokens also reached the Shadow Falls space. Neither side has completed their Mission, Ringwraiths are still in Near Harad and Sauron has only 3 influence in the Shire, for the Heroes, there are 5 monster tokens on the board.

Beravor steps up, but manages to deal only 9 of the needed 11 points of damage before exhausting. Sauron wins.

2009-10-27 1 One of the unsung Heroes of the Free People, Beravor, Ranger of the North sets out to stop Sauron.

Sauron is hunting for the Ring at Gladden Fields, as Beravor heads to the Grey Havens. Chatting with Gandalf improves her resistance to evil (+1 Wisdom), but then something unexpected happens, she fails to complete her Starting Quest, as the Crebain manage to survive! So she is forced to spend another turn at the Havens, finally defeating the Crebain on her second attempt. Sauron puts Lothlorien under pressure with a Plot. After a brief side-track to Bree, Beravor hits the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest, continues to Mt. Gundabad, before heading down south, hitting Gladden Fields to remove Sauron's Starting Plot and finishes at Amon Hen. From there she uses her Boat to reach Pelargir and chat with Denethor, before returning to Minas Tirith.

Sauron Plots at Helm's Deep, removing Theoden from there. He also moves the Black Serpent to block on path west and places a monster to block another. Thus, Beravor is forced to take a roundabout road, down to Osgiliath, then through Minas Morgul to the Dead Marshes, before reaching Amon Hen again. Next turn, she moves to Fangorn to talk to Saruman and ends in Lothlorien, removing Sauron's Plot. Sauron is unable to put another Plot into play. Beravor takes the Redhorn Gate to Shire to collect a Favor, then returns home to Fornost. Following turn she detours to North Downs for a Favor, before returning through Rivendell and High Pass to Gladden Fields.

Sauron finally gets another Plot into play, this one at Barad-Dur and he also lays the groundwork at Isengard for another Plot soon. Ringwraiths move to Mt. Doom to block access to the Plot. Beravor moves to Isengard, where she gains a Quest to explore Near Harad and also removes Sauron's influence by finishing her turn there. With the Black Serpent blocking the Plains of Rohan, she tries to go through Helm's Deep, but is "Betrayed" and has to fight a Warg Rider, a combat that ends in double-defeat. No Plot for Sauron, as Beravor removed the influence from Isengard and the Event card proves even worse, II:7, meaning Beravor zaps to Barad-Dur! Ringwraiths move to try to defeat her and a monster is placed at Mt. Doom. Still, she just was defeated and is at full health, so she survives, removes the Plot and moves to Mt. Doom, where she faces a Giant Spider. Although she is hurt, she is an experience wilderness survivor and heals quickly. Beravor moves to Sea of Udun and then down south to Near Harad to complete her Quest, getting a lucky Encounter that allows her to remove influence from the Shadow Pool.

This leaves Sauron yet again unable to play a new Plot. Beravor moves to Helm's Deep and removes his last remaining Plot, before finishing in the Plains of Rohan. Following turn she moves to Eregion for a talk with Aragorn, then hits Redhorn Gate to cut off Sauron's influence chains from Isengard once more. She also gains a Quest from her Encounter there. Sauron has no Plots in play and can't play any, he is running on fumes. Beravor moves to the Mouths of the Greyflood to collect a Favor, then down to the Gap of Rohan. From there, she travels through Fangorn, down to Edoras, to Emyn Muil and to South Eaves, to complete her Quest.

Sauron plays a Plot, but it's all too little, too late at this stage. Beravor is attacked by a Cave Troll from a Shadow Card, but survives, then moves to Minas Tirith, gaining more Favor. Next turn, she visits the Houses of Healing.

Finale starts with no Sauron token in stage III and his Black and Red still in stage I, latter being the token of his Mission. Beravor finishes with 7 Favors still unspent and has completed her "Spear of the West" Mission a long time ago. Hero wins.

2009-10-23 1 Eometh and Argalad team up, looking to protect Middle-Earth from Sauron and his Minions.

Both Heroes draw their combat Starting Quests and Eometh starts off, riding to Isengard, where Sauron's Starting Plot is also located. Eometh consults with Saruman and then easily defeats the Agent to complete his Quest. Argalad moves to the South Eaves, where Mouth of Sauron is waiting. Corruption draw is "Wretched", a quick end to Argalad's turn. Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad. Eometh rides a tour of Mirkwood, collecting Favors, then faces Peril first at High Pass and then at Mt. Gundabad, where he in turn becomes "Wretched", failing to remove Sauron's Plot. Argalad moves from Lothlorien, through Moria to Weathertop for a Green Flag Event and then onto to Rivendell to join up with Eometh.

Sauron adds a Plot at Pelargir, this one moving the Yellow token. Eometh faces more Peril at High Pass on his way to Lake Esgaroth and a talk with Dain II. After that, he takes refuge in the Woodland Realm. Argalad heads back south, again passing through Moria, but this time he is noticed and the Balrog attacks and defeats him! Sauron discards his Starting Plot. Eometh takes the northern route through the mountains toward Mt. Gundabad, where once again Peril hinders him, making him lose 1 Favor and gain a Corruption card, leaving him unable to remove the Plot. He backtracks to the Northern Waste, where he receives a Quest to explore the Ruins of Angmar. Argalad talks to Saruman in Fangorn on his way to Eregion through the Gap of Rohan.

Sauron puts a Plot affecting Lothlorien into play. Eometh moves to the Ruins of Angmar, where he defeats a Barrow Wight, completes his Quest and then hits Mt. Gundabad, but is unable to take out Gothmog. Argalad takes the Redhorn Gate to the Gladden Fields and then down the Anduin to Lorien to remove Sauron's Plot. Sauron works up another Plot, this one at Emyn Muil, removing a Favor and Aragorn from there and then moves the Mouth to protect the Plot. A Green Flag Event involving the Red token hits Near Harad, Ringwraiths move to protect the Plot in Pelargir, while the Black Serpent rides to Nindalf to baby-sit Boromir. Eometh meets "Betrayal" and is defeated by Gothmog. Argalad moves southward to Edoras, gaining a pair of Favor.

Sauron is happy with his Plots, focusing on consolidating his position. Eometh rides from Rivendell to the Plains of Rohan, meeting a Southron, failing to defeat the villain, but still clearing a path for Argalad. The Elf moves to the Plains and they trade, with Argalad continuing to Emyn Muil, where he uses the Anticipate + Execute combo to take out the Mouth of Sauron and then remove the Plot. Argalad finishes by backtracking to Lorien. Sauron plays another Plot, this one at Isengard. Black Serpent moves to the Plains of Rohan, where he then Ambushes Eometh on his turn, using "Black Breath" to weaken the Hero, before defeating him. With a Green Flag Event and Gandalf at the Plains of Rohan, Argalad moves in and finishes off what Eometh started, taking out the Black Serpent. He then joins his fellow Hero at Edoras, gaining another Favor.

Sadly for our Heroes, Finale starts as the Black token reaches the Shadow Falls space, with Hero, Red and Yellow tokens 2 spaces short of the Finale space in stage III. Heroes managed to remove 2 Minions and planned to attack the Ringwraiths in Pelargir next turn to complete their Mission, but as Sauron's Mission was to get the Red token to stage III, that is complete. Sauron wins.

2009-10-21 1 "Sassy Socialite Saves Middle-Earth!" Or at least that is the cry Eleanor of Minas Tirith dreams of hearing.

Rumor has it that something is wrong in Isengard, but Eleanor's Quest takes her to Near Harad. There she faces the Black Serpent and after taking quite a bit of damage, manages to Retreat. She then continues back to Minas Tirith and is forced to rest and heal there. Next turn, she hikes to Barad-Dur, completing her Advanced Quest as well, then backtracks to Mt. Doom, where she gains a Quest to explore Rhun. Sauron hits Lothlorien with a Plot. Eleanor makes it to Rhun, consults with Aragorn and completes her Quest, but then runs afoul some Olog-hai. She continues northward, to the Iron Hills, where she trains with Dain II and then travels through Mirkwood to Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot.

Sauron Plots at Osgiliath. Eleanor goes to Isengard and talks to Saruman, removing Sauron's Starting Plot, before continuing to Helm's Deep for a meeting with Theoden about a Horse and finally to Edoras. Next turn she rides to Near Harad to take on the Black Serpent again, but exhausts. Sauron Plots again in Lothlorien and an Event card whisks Boromir off to the Mouths of the Greyflood, negating her reason for going to Near Harad. Undeterred, Eleanor defeats the Black Serpent, but is herself also defeated. From Minas Tirith, she rides to Dunland, where she meets a Ranger.

Sauron works the Red token hard, another Plot focusing on it, this one at Mt. Gundabad appears, bringing with it Gothmog and the Ringwraiths. Event card has seen Eleanor move to the Mouths, so she consults with Boromir, then rides to Tharbad, followed by Bree, collecting a Favor in each location, before finally finishing in Rivendell for a chat with Aragorn. Racing back down south, Eleanor goes through the Gap of Rohan and hits Lorien, removing Sauron's Plot yet again. Ithil-Stone sees Saruman fall under Sauron's yolk and a Green Flag Event hits the Gap of Rohan, both of which Sauron's protects with monsters. Eleanor reaches the Gap, but fails to defeat the Warg Rider. Next turn, she removes the Event. Moving onto Isengard, she finds the location too Perilous, she becomes Isolated, unable to consult with Saruman, so instead she rides to Rivendell, but has no luck getting rid of her Corruption.

Sauron is happy with his Plots, especially as another Green Flag Event moving the Red token comes into play, this time at Near Harad. Eleanor moves to High Pass and defeats an Orc, taking the Favor, then down the Anduin to Gladden Fields to collect another Favor, before reaching Lothlorien. From there, she continues down the river to Nindalf, where she has heard Boromir might be found. Unfortunately, the Mouth of Sauron is also there and uses "Black Breath" to stop Eleanor. Following turn, the Mouth Ambushes Eleanor and stabs her with the Morgul-blade, which defeats her (doing 20 points of damage!). Eleanor wakes up in Edoras, still looking to get something done, but Sauron has one last trick up his sleeve: Winter Storm. So Eleanor merely moves to Nindalf again, defeating the Mouth and consults with Boromir.

Finale starts with Sauron having dominance. Despite Eleanor finishing with Str 7 and Agi 3 and completing her Mission, it is all for nothing, as Sauron completes his Mission. Sauron wins.

2009-10-16 1 They came from the north, looking to stop Sauron from dominating Middle-Earth. Beravor and Thalin they were called.

First Event of the game is I:14. Beravor treks to the Redhorn Gate, looking to complete her Starting Quest, but meets a Giant Spider, which she fails to defeat. Thalin doesn't have much better luck, he lacks the Mountain movement cards needed to reach Northern Waste, so he ends at Ered Mithrin. Sauron plays a Plot at Mt. Gundabad and continues to move his Minions northward. Beravor completes her Quest easily now and then hits Bree to consult with Gandalf. She also takes advantage of the Green Flag Event to move the Hero token up one space. They will need another one to make full use of it though. In the Shire, she encounters a Ranger and takes him up on his offer, relocating to Fornost. Thalin makes it to Northern Waste, but puts on a shameful display in the combat against the Snaga, failing to defeat it!

Sauron Plots further with the Red token, slapping "A Broken Line of Kings" to Lothlorien. Beravor does a quick Favor trip to Bree, then heads north, exploring the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest, before advancing to Mt. Gundabad. There she comes across some Ill-met Company and becomes "Careless" losing some Favors, leaving her unable to remove the Plot, so she decides to continue on to Rivendell. Thalin's turn sees him finally complete his Starting Quest by killing the Snaga, but it also means he pretty much wasted a turn. Due to the Hero token having advanced one space because of the Event I:14, stage II starts already. Sauron discards his Starting Plot from Gladden Fields and spreads influence in both the Shadow Pool and around Edoras. An "Evil Fog" sees Thalin move to Mt. Gundabad, where Gothmog is sharpening his axe in anticipation. Beravor hikes from Rivendell to Esgaroth (taking some damage from Peril at High Pass due to Gothmog), meeting Dain II on the way. From there, she continues even further, down to Rhun, before finishing in the Bight. Thalin has another quick turn, fighting Gothmog to a double-defeat.

Sauron Plots at Edoras. With Sauron having taken dominance, Event II:13 sees Aragorn appear at Dead Marshes, offering another chance to move the Hero token up one. But the Ringwraiths move in, Black Serpent advances and a monster token blocks one path there as well. Beravor still finds a way there, but she is hit by the Black Breath, making her a lot weaker in the combat against the Ringwraiths and she utterly fails to do any damage. Thalin moves from Rivendell to Moria, looking to complete his Advanced Quest. He comes up against the Balrog in Moria. Thalin manages to deal 7 damage himself, but also is on the receiving end of 17 points! Still, his Iron Will allows him to complete the Quest, but he is left with just 2 cards in the life pool, none in hand.

Sauron is happy with his Plots, so nothing happens there. The Black Serpent rides to Moria, looking to knock down Thalin. Sauron also plays "Lord of the Rings" to get Black Breath back, which he then uses against Beravor in the Ambush Step, a combat that sees Beravor defeated by the Ringwraiths. In Moria, Thalin is stabbed by the Morgul-blade and is also defeated, for truly quick Hero turns.

Finale starts with Sauron not having completed his Mission (to get the Black token to stage III), while the Heroes have completed their "Spear of the West", meaning the Ringwraiths "only" have +4 advantage from dominance. Despite a hefty advantage, Thalin, the chosen champion, manages to deal 11 dmg, while also taking 19 dmg himself, as he goes all-out with Reckless. But he needed to deal 13 damage, so the Ringwraits survive. Sauron wins.

2009-10-13 1 Argalad of the Woodland Realm, sets out to investigate hushed rumours that the Dark Lord might on the rise.

Firstly though, he makes a detour to the Forest Trail, where his liege Thranduil gives him advice on thwarting the Evil One. Argalad moves down the Anduin to Gladden Fields, where Sauron's cronies are hunting for the Ring. Next, Argalad hits Fangorn and completes his Starting Quest, then back up the river to High Pass.

Due to Thranduil's meddling and Argalad cutting short the influence chain, Sauron is unable to play a Plot. But he still manages to play "Evil Fog" and move Argalad to Rivendell, behing the mountains. Undeterred, Argalad crosses the mountains and heads to Woodland Realm, for another advice session with Thranduil and receives a Boat as well. But he finds himself unable to reach Mt. Gundabad or to cut off more of Sauron's influence, so he just moves to High Pass in preparation for the following turn.

Sauron can only play his "Orcs in the Mountains" Plot, again Thranduil has reduced the Shadow Pool to too low a level. But he fails to defend the Plot properly and Argalad moves north, removes the Plot and completes his Advanced Quest and then moves back south, camping at the Forest Road. Having drawn 2 Encounter Quests, he decides to complete them now, first to Woodland Realm, then down to South Eaves. Sauron finally gets a Plot he wanted earlier into play, at Pelargir where Denethor had been spotted. The Black Serpent moves in to defend the Plot. Argalad comes south as well, but then heads west, to Edoras and onto Helm's Deep, where he defeats a Warg Rider, before chatting to Theoden about a Horse. Following turn, he does a quick trip up to Gladden Fields to remove Sauron's Starting Plot, then comes back down the river to Lothlorien.

Sauron next Plots at Barad-Dur, intensifying his hunger for the Ring. Unfortunately for him, even the arrival of Gothmog and the Ringwraiths don't help him agains the twists of Fate. Event II:7 allows Argalad to move to a location of his choice, Barad-Dur being that choice. He easily removes the Plot, then rides his Horse hard north, to the Iron Hills, where he first defeats and Orc, then trains with Dain II and moves to rest at Erebor. After healing, he rides from Erebor to Dol Guldur and then onto Lothlorien.

Sauron proves himself "Lord of the Rings" and gets back a discarded Plot. Argalad rides to Minas Tirith, looking to remove a Corruption card. No go unfortunately. Next turn, back up north, at Amon Hen he faces a Southron. Despite all the odds, he fails to defeat the evil villain. For Sauron, this is a lucky break, it allows him to re-play the Barad-Dur Ring Plot and fortify its defenses with the Ringwraiths. Argalad take the Boat back down the Anduin to Minas Tirith to heal. From there he makes an attempt at Barad-Dur again. "Dark Promises" deals him 5 damage, but the Ringwraiths then deal a lot more, enough in fact to defeat him. Argalad did get 8 damage in as well.

Event III:5 sees the Ringwraiths pop from Mt. Doom to the Shire! Ithil-Stone makes Denethor falls under Sauron's control. Argalad rides hard back north, reaching Gladden Fields. Following turn, he rides to Rivendell and gains Favors from Aragorn and collects another Favor from Bree. Ringwraiths heal up and Gothmog moves in to block Tharbad as a route south. With a Green Flag Event offering +1 Fort at Amon Hen, Argalad retraces his steps, first to Gladden Fields, then to Amon Hen and finally to Lothlorien.

Finale starts with a tie for dominance and both sides having completed their Mission. In the final combat, Argalad with Fortitude 6 and Agility 4, uses all his Ag to boost his Strength and finishes off the Ringwraiths in just 3 combat cards! Hero wins.

2009-10-08 1 Eometh, the proud Rider of Rohan, has heard rumors that the Dark Lord has been poking around Gladden Fields. For what, he doesn't know, but Sauron must be stopped.

Immediately, Eometh rides to Isengard to consult with Saruman, but is then attacked by an Agent, who he defeats, thus completing his Starting Quest. Mounting his horse, he rides hard to Gladden Fields and removes Sauron's Starting Plot, then meets Thranduil on the Forest Trail and is given leave to shelter in Woodland Realm.

Sauron takes a more aggressive approach, sending troops toward Lothlorien. Eometh goes to Lake Esgaroth for a talk with Dain II, then rides to Dol Guldur, where he faces and defeats the Mouth of Sauron and completes his Advanced Quest. He continues on to Lothlorien, removing Sauron's Plot. The following turn, he rides to Osgiliath for a Favor and ends in Minas Tirith. Sauron Plots in the Sea of Udun and muster monsters to defend the location. Eometh rides there and faces a Cave Troll, but is unable to defeat it. Next turn, he removes the Plot, then does a Favor-tour of Mirkwood and finishes in Lothlorien.

An "Evil Fog" rises before he can rest though and Eometh finds himself at Amon Hen, where the Black Serpent ambushes and defeats him. Moving on, he makes his way through Fangorn, but is attacked by a very peristent Orc, managing to defeat the monster, but not before taking quite bit of damage. Eometh can't move much further, so he rides to Edoras to rest. Sauron is having a horrid time getting Plots out, the Hero token is racing further and further ahead. Eometh rides to the Gap of Rohan, where he fights and defeats a Warg Rider and then removes a Green Flag Event. Following turn, he heads north, taking a detour to the Mouths of the Greyflood to consult with Saruman, then onto Rivendell.

Saruman is now corrupted by Sauron. Eometh rides back south to try and help the wizard, facing Peril both in the Gap of Rohan and Isengard, but he manages to remove the Plot. Next turn, he rides to Minas Tirith as he got a Quest to explore Near Harad. As it happens, Near Harad also gets a Green Flag Event, so he has twice the reason to go there, but anticipating this, Sauron sends the Ringwraiths there. First combat results in mutual exhaustion, but the following turn, Eometh is defeated in the Ambush Step.

Ithil-Stone helps Sauron get both Denethor and Saruman under his power, but he is still well behind. Eometh hits Nindalf and defeats the Black Serpent, then consults with Boromir, before returning to Minas Tirith. Next, he rides to Near Harad and defeats the Ringwraiths and completes his Encounter Quest, but the Green Flag Event has been replaced, so Eometh returns to Minas Tirith. Sauron is now desperate to protect his Plots, but Eometh only has enough Favor to remove the one at Helm's Deep or from Isengard. Mouth of Sauron has returned and is at Dunharrow, forcing Eometh to ride to Nindalf again, where he faces another Cave Troll, but this time with better luck and he is able to continue to Edoras. After resting and healing, he heads to Helm's Deep, where he defeats a Southron and removes the Plot.

Finale starts with a tie for dominance, even after the huge lead Eometh had. Sauron moving Black token 13 spaces on the last three Story Steps helped him catch up. Neither side has completed its Mission, with Eometh having gotten "Keep Minas Morgul at Bay" and while he did kill 3 Minions, two of them came back. Sauron's Mission was to have 3 Active Plots in play, foiled at the final hurdle by Eometh. In the final combat though, Ringwraiths get their revenge, easily surviving. Sauron wins.

2009-10-06 1 Sister Act 2, the Sequel, as Eleanor and Beravor team up for the second time, hoping to save Middle-Earth from the rule of Sauron.

Both ladies draw their non-combat Starting Quest. Early on it goes poorly, with Eleanor moving to Dunharrow, looking for Boromir, but she is attacked by a Warg Rider and fails to defeat it. Beravor fails to reach the Redhorn Gap, making camp at Eregion, where she is given a Quest. Sauron Plots at Lothlorien and moves the Black Serpent to Dunharrow. Eleanor barely survives the Ambush by the Minion, limping to Edoras. Beravor has better luck, completing her Starting Quest, then trekking to Bree to complete the Encounter Quest and finishes in Fornost.

Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad, but is unable to muster enough forces to protect his Plots. Eleanor hits Helm's Deep and talks to Theoden and then reaches Lothlorien, removing the Plot from there. Beravor moves to Angmar and completes her Advanced Quest, then onto Mt. Gundabad to remove the Plot and camps in High Pass. Sauron now Plots at Osgiliath. Eleanor races to the west from Lothlorien, through the Gap of Rohan to Anfalas to complete her Starting Quest and she continues all the way to Pelargir, thanks to her Boat. Beravor treks through Rivendell, down to Moria and then to Lothlorien.

Sauron has a new Plot in play at Dunharrow. Eleanor hits Osgiliath and removes the Plot and then, despite the Ringwraiths guarding the paths to Barad-Dur, manages to make it in there, completing her Advanced Quest. Beravor heads to Dunharrow to remove the Plot from there and then continues to Edoras. Sauron fails to play a Plot and is now well behind on dominance. Eleanor sneaks out of Barad-Dur and barely manages to Retreat from the Ringwraiths. Sadly, at the Dead Marshes, she stumbles across some Olog-hai and is defeated. Beravor tries to reach Isengard, where she has heard Sauron is looking to Plot next. But in Fangorn, she is attacked by a Huorn and although she manages to defeat the creature, she is unable to move on.

Uruk-hai rise in Isengard and the Black Serpent rides to Fangorn to ambush Beravor. Eleanor treks from Minas Tirith to Lothlorien. Beravor and the Black Serpent go through a momentous battle, which sees both sides defeated. The Mouth of Sauron moves to Fangorn to protect the Plot in Isengard, as Sauron has still a chance to tie for dominance. Eleanor is undeterred by the foul Minion and manages to Retreat, reaching Isengard to remove the Plot, finishing in the Gap of Rohan. Beravor goes through Dol Guldur and then down the Anduin to Minas Tirith. Sauron looks to draw cards, but evidently, the Minion moving card doesn't come up. Eleanor goes back to Isengard for a chat with Gandalf and then hikes all the way to the Old Forest, where she meets a Merry Fellow. Beravor hits Mordor, searching high and low for Favors, finally ending in the Sea of Udun, to remove Sauron's Starting Plot.

Finale starts and the Heroes have dominance by quite a bit. They have also completed their "Spear of the West" Mission, so Heroes win.

2009-10-04 1 It is the (mini) Northern Alliance, Thalin and Argalad, on a Mission to stop Sauron.

First turn sets the tone for the game, as Event I:13 is drawn, enabling Thalin to get a free ride to the Blue Mountains to complete his Starting Quest and continue all the way to the Old Forest. Argalad strengthens the ties by consulting with Dain II at Erebor and then returning to the Woodland Realm, where he receives a Boat. Sauron Plots at the Sea of Udun, capturing Gollum. Thalin hits Moria and completes his Advanced Quest. Both Quest done in 2 turns, that's SO ahead of all projections before the game. Argalad gets a perfect draw and reaches the Sea of Udun from the Woodland Realm. He faces an Orc there and luckily, though he goes in without cards, his Agility draws him the necessary cards to defeat the Orc and remove the Plot.

Sauron now Plots at Osgiliath. Thalin pops over to Fangorn to chat with Saruman and ends in Lothlorien. Argalad heads back north to Rhun, where he consults with Aragorn and completes his Encounter Quest. Sauron continues to focus on his military, plotting in Mt. Gundabad. But it is left undefended and Thalin races in to discard the Plot, though is forced to end his turn there. Argalad hits Lothlorien, placing him near Fangorn, his Starting Quest location.

Sauron spreads influence around Minas Tirith, but can't quite bring a new Plot in. Gothmog arrives and attacks Thalin, while a Green Flag Event at Near Harad starts pushing the Red token ever further. Thalin survives the contest with Gothmog, dealing 8 damage to the Minion and barely reaches Rivendell in one piece. Argalad races through Fangorn, completing his Quest, and advances to Minas Tirith.

Sauron refuses to Plot in Minas Tirith, since Argalad is there with a bunch of Favors, all ready to remove it right away, instead, he starts working on Isengard, spreading his influence in that direction. Thalin rests and heals, then moves to Weathertop, which is the furthest he can reach. Argalad moves to the Plains of Rohan to cut Sauron's influence chain. With Minas Tirith now Hero-free, Sauron plays his Plot and moves his Minions to defend it, though he attacks Argalad with the Black Serpent. Thalin races south and reaches Fangorn, perfectly placed to once again cut off Sauron's influence chain. Argalad is defeated by the Black Serpent and taken to Edoras, though he does deal 7 damage in return.

Sauron fortifies Minas Tirith by bringing the Black Serpent to defend one avenue, while the Ringwraiths defend another. Thalin races through Edoras, discussing their plan with Argalad and gets all the Favors. He then hits Ninfalas and defeats the Black Serpent and finally ends in Minas Tirith, consulting with Boromir and removes the Plot. Argalad is content to merely cut off Sauron's influence chain to Isengard yet again.

As the curtain draws close, Sauron Plots once more in Minas Tirith, as Denethor falls under his spell. Thalin sits back and smokes his pipe in the city. Argalad is attacked by the Ringwraiths, but shockingly defeats them, though receives his second Corruption card. He ends in Edoras, but fails to remove any Corruption.

Finale starts with the Hero token well ahead of the Red token, which is Sauron's lead token. As the Hero Mission was to finish with no more than 2 monster tokens on the board and they finished with 2, Heroes win by Mission.

For the first time, went for Plot-prevention in addition to removing them. Uruk-hai Plot is especially vulnerable. I was convinced Sauron had the Red token to stage III Mission, but in fact he had the 3 Active Plot Mission. But, on the other hand, I managed to fake my friend into thinking I had the Noble Blood Mission, by aggressively focusing on removing any Corruption cards.

2009-09-29 1 Joining forces again, the first pair ever to win the game for the Heroes by Mission, Beravor and Eometh.

Beravor treks out to the Redhorn Gate and beats a Snaga, completing her Starting Quest and then finishing in Gladden Fields. Eometh rides to Isengard to consult with Saruman and then battle an Agent for his Starting Quest. He defeats his enemy, but with his dying breath, the Agent curses him and Eometh is "Wretched", finding himself in Lothlorien.

Sauron Plots in Lothlorien (poor choice, but all there was). Beravor travels down the Anduin to Lothlorien, trades with Eometh and discards the Plot and then heads back up the river, looking to get closer to her Advanced Quest location, the Ruins of Angmar. Eometh does a long ride to the Mouths of the Greyflood and then back to Isengard to remove Sauron's Starting Plot, ending in Fangorn.

Sauron plays a Plot at Barad-Dur, but the Hero token is already getting away at this early stage. Beravor goes through Mt. Gundabad, then completes her Advanced Quest, and manages to reach Rivendell, where she gets to remove her Corruption card for free and then rest as well. Eometh rides to Osgiliath, removing a monster token from there and ends in Minas Tirith.

Sauron drops another Plot into Lothlorien and another monster token into Osgiliath. On her way to the Iron Hills to meet up with Dain II, Beravor meets a Giant Spider at High Pass and fails to defeat it, ending her turn early. Eometh rides to Osgiliath again, but by now, Sauron's arm has grown long and the location is Perilous. Eometh does collect a few Favor, before returning to Edoras though.

Sauron plays the expected Plot into Osgiliath, moving the Red token 3 steps now, 4 in fact as a Green Event card at Near Harad is drawn. Ringwraiths ride to defend the Event. Beravor hits the Iron Hills, trains with Dain and then makes it back all the way to the Gladden Fields, where she comes across some of Saruman's agents and the Yellow token progresses. Eometh rides up to meet her, they trade and then Eometh hits Lothlorien to remove the Plot from there, ending in Fangorn to cut Sauron's influence line and dropping Isengard down to 1 influence.

Thus, no Plot for Sauron. He reconnects Isengard and plays a Shadow card to get "A Broken Line of Kings" back to his hand though. Beravor goes through the wilderness to Edoras. Eometh completes an Encounter Quest as Isengard, then ends in Amon Hen, putting another dent into Sauron's influence chain. Still, Lothlorien goes under siege again and Sauron also draws lines through Redhorn gate. Black Serpent also rides to Amon Hen. Beravor hits Ninfalas for a chat with Boromir, then down to Osgiliath to remove Sauron's Plot and finally to Minas Tirith. Eometh survives the battle against the Serpent, but he can only reach Lothlorien and it is under siege, so he can't rest there.

Sauron finally plays his Uruk-hai Plot at Isengard, but it's looking too late. Especially as the Event deck throws a curve-ball, another Green Flag Event, this one moving the Black token at Erebor removes the Red token Event. Beravor tries to hit Barad-Dur to remove Sauron's Plot from there. Sadly, she makes it all the way there, but then is corrupted and becomes "Wretched". Eometh falls at the Plains of Rohan.

No Plot for Sauron. With the Green Flag Event gone, our Heroes just sit back and chill. Sauron's Red token finishes 1 short of the Finale space and the Heroes rejoice, they have dominance and complete their "Noble Blood" Mission. Many things went wrong for Sauron, one of the biggest factors was the monster tokens, 17 drawn, 12 blank (includes monsters placed via Event and Shadow cards; Sauron didn't take 17 Monster Actions). Heroes win.

2009-09-28 1 Argalad volunteers to be the test-dummy for a new strategy, known as lolly-gagging, where you spend your first turn just sitting and act for real on the second of your turns.

Despite 10 cards in hand, Argalad can barely reach Fangorn and even then is forced to take the Gladden Fields route, which is Perilous. He completes his Starting Quest and finishes in Lothlorien. Sauron slaps down a Plot in Barad-Dur and moves the Black Serpent to Mt. Doom and places a monster token in BD to further protect the Plot. Argalad lollygags, then detours to Isengard to remove Sauron's Starting Plot, finishing in the Woodland Realm, for a chat with Thranduil. Sauron puts Lothlorien under siege with his third Plot of the game. Argalad takes a nap and then treks across the mountains in the north to reach Mt. Gundabad to complete his Advanced Quest. Unfortunately, even with a ton of cards in hand, he is forced to finish at the High Pass, collecting more Corruption.

An Event card offers him a shot at the Plot in Barad-Dur, moving there at the cost of a Corruption card. Black Serpent doesn't trust the monster token and moves in to defend the Plot himself. With Argalad at -1 Fort, Str and Agility, combined with him suffering a "Betrayal", Argalad is defeated. Sitting around in Minas Tirith doesn't give him anything extra.

Sauron struggles to get Plots into play and Argalad manages to scrounge up enough Favors to remove the one from Lothlorien. Rohan is heavily influenced and Argalad faces Peril everywhere (-1 Wisdom Corruption helps Sauron in this matter). With the Ringwraiths joining the defense of the Barad-Dur Plot, Argalad decides to let it go. Hero token is 2 steps ahead of the Yellow token, so he'll most likely tie on dominance at worst. Sauron hits Edoras with a Plot and Argalad struggles northward, stalling at High Pass, thanks to Gothmog making it Perilous.

Sauron plays another Plot, this one at Rivendell, removing Aragorn. Gothmog moves south to High Pass to tackle Argalad, but despite "The Black Breath" dropping Argalad down to Str 2, Agility 0, basically free hits for Gothmog, Argalad manages to stay alive, heading to Rivendell. He heals and as the Event card had placed Gandalf and a Green Flag Event at Trollshaws, with his limited cards, he still manages to remove the Plot from Rivendell, preventing the Yellow token from catching the Hero one.

Uruk-hai rise in Isengard. Argalad kicks back in Rivendell and then does a Favor-tour of Rhudaur, finishing in the Shire. Bad planning on Sauron's part sees him now discard the Uruk-hai Plot, but he can't play a new one. Desperately drawing cards, it seems he wants to get the Black token to stage III, which another Green Flag Event is helping with. Shadow card "Shire, Baggins" sees the Yellow token reach the Hero token and they will finish hand in hand. Argalad gets hit with Peril again, this one limits his Favors to 3 on his sheet, blowing his Mission of having 5+ Favors sky-high on the last turn. In Rivendell, he manages to remove his -1 Strength Corruption, leaving him with -1 Agility one.

Finale starts, Sauron's Mission fails by 1 step, as the Black token is one short of stage III and Argalad only has his 3 Favors. Despite being at only Strength 6 after Agility, Argalad makes short work of the Ringwraiths and wins.

2009-09-26 1 It's the Beard Squad, Eometh and Thalin, out to defend Middle-Earth from Sauron.

Both head toward their perspective Starting Quest locations, but Thalin fails to reach the Northern Waste. Eometh hits Isengard and defeats an Agent, then consults with Saruman. Sauron Plots at the Sea of Udun, another Yellow token Plot to go with his Starting Plot at Gladden Fields. Thalin reaches Dain II and defeats the Snaga, completing his Quest. Eometh rides hard to Sea of Udun, but at Dagorlad, he feels that Sauron's arm has grown long and becomes "Wretched", dumping him to Erebor of all places.

This allows Sauron to catch the Hero marker, but his next Plot is at Lothlorien. Thalin reaches the Woodland Realm after a long trip and gains a Boat. Eometh rides through Mirkwood, meeting with Thalin in the Realm, then through Rhosgobel and finally removes Sauron's Starting Plot from Gladden Fields.

Undeterred, Sauron plays another Plot involving the Ring, this one at Pelargir, where Denethor is located with a monster token. Thalin struggles to move in Mirkwood, barely making it to Rhosgobel. Eometh rides back to Dagorlad and then to the Sea of Udun, removing Sauron's Plot, but taking damage from the Encounter. Woodland Realm now falls under siege, as another Red Plot gets initiated. Thalin treks to the Gap of Rohan to remove a Green Flag Event that would've moved the Red token. Eometh is Ambushed by the Black Serpent, but not quite defeated. He travels toward Minas Tirith, but loses his Horse at the Dead Marshes.

Sauron is happy with his Plots and the Ringwraiths descend on Eometh. Thalin makes it to Rhosgobel to remove a Corruption card, but he gained another on the way, so not a whole of gain overall. Eometh is quickly dispatched by the Eight Nagzul and finds himself in Minas Tirith recuperating. Ringwraiths set westward, but slowly. Thalin reaches Rivendell, but no luck removing his Corruption from the Encounter. Eometh treks to Edoras.

Sauron takes charge, gaining dominance. Ringwraiths continue their westwardly momentum. Thalin does a big turn, first hitting Moria and completing his Advanced Quest, then back up to Rivendell and finally to Bree, for a chat with Aragorn and Gandalf. Eometh consults with Theoden his king in Edoras (lucky Event card placement) and then Saruman in Isengard, before finally removing the Plot from Lothlorien. Final turn, Ringwraiths ride to the Shire. Thalin has 2 cards left, so he rests and hits the Shire, but despite resting, is defeated by them. Eometh doesn't even bother trying to reach the Shire.

Finale starts with the Hero and Sauron's Red and Yellow tokens reaching the Finale space. Both sides have completed their Mission, Heroes have 6 Favors total, Ringwraiths are in the Shire. In the final combat, Thalin is chosen, but manages to only deal 7 points before exhausting. Both Heroes had very poor cards for the final combat, but perhaps that is balanced somewhat by Sauron's monster token draw in this game, which was 7 total tokens, 6 blanks. Sauron wins.

2009-09-24 1 Thalin has a lot to prove, after yesterday's game, he is the only Hero not to have been involved in a game that ended in a win for Hero/-es by Mission. Drawing the Blue Mountains Starting Quest and then "Keep Minas Morgul at Bay" (kill Minions) Mission don't help much.

Thalin heads into Mirkwood, but "His Arm Has Grown Long" hits at Forest Trail, luckily, nothing happens. He ends his turn in the Perilous High Pass and gets "Hopeless" Corruption, limiting his Travel to just 3 steps. Next turn, he takes a chance, moves just once to Rivendell and gets a break, getting to remove his Corruption card. Sauron Plots against Lothlorien and moves his Minions. Thalin takes heart and goes from Rivendell to the Blue Mountains, completes his Quest and then finishes in the Grey Havens. Next turn, he treks through the Shire, ending in Tharbad.

Sauron plays another Red token Plot, this one at Mt. Gundabad. Thalin hits Rohan for a chat with Theoden about a Horse, then onto Lothlorien to remove the Plot. Sauron puts a Plot into effect at Barad-Dur. Thalin heads to Moria, as he now has 2 Quests to complete there. Mouth of Sauron stands in his way, but the Corruption does little. Thalin deals 7 damage to the Minion before exhausting, but his Iron Will allows him to push on, completing both Quests and then trekking to Rivendell. Next turn, he makes it to Mt. Gundabad even with -1 Fortitude and removes the Plot. Unfortunately, he is unable to return to Rivendell, so heads into the Perilous Northern Waste.

Sauron fails to play a Plot, but Gothmog arrives and moves to the Northern Waste to try to slow Thalin down, while the Ringwraiths move to Osgiliath to keep Denethor company. Despite the "Morgul Blade" stabbing deep (2 Corruption cards, so 10 points of damage), Thalin defeats Gothmog. He does take a beating himself and is unable to move. Next turn he makes it to Mt. Gundabad, but his Corruption slows him down and then he is shamefully defeated by an Orc!

Sauron is now desperate to catch the Hero token and plays another Yellow token Plot, this on at Pelargir. Ringwraiths also move along the coast. From Rivendell, Thalin dares Peril at both High Pass and Gladden Fields, but makes it to Lothlorien. Following turn, he pops over to the Gap of Rohan to remove a Green Flag Event and finishes in Edoras.

Sauron discards his Starting Quest and "Ithil-Stone" lets him put Denethor under his spell. Thalin goes to Pelargir, but consulting with Denethor makes him "Wretched". Undeterred, Thalin goes back to Pelargir to remove a Plot and then removes a Green Flag Event from Near Harad, finishing in Minas Tirith. Saruman has also now fallen under the power of Sauron and an Event card allows him to drop the Ringwraiths into the Shire. Thalin hits Ninfalas for a battle with the Black Serpent, who goes down rather easily, then consults with Boromir and finishes in Edoras. Next, he rides up to Dunland for a pair of Favors and then back to Isengard, where, despite Peril, he removes the Plot, then consults with Saruman and ends in Lothlorien.

Sauron plays one move Plot, hoping to reach the Finale with a tie come final combat. Thalin first moves to the South Eaves and the following turn, after a brief battle with an Agent, to Erebor, where he removes a Green Flag Event and then trains with Dain II.

Hero token reaches the Finale, with the Black token 1 short, Yellow token 2 short. Thalin did not complete his Mission, but Sauron does, so final combat is a default affair. In the end, Thalin makes quick work of the Ringwraiths. Still no Mission win for Thalin, but win in final combat.

2009-09-23 1 Eleanor, pride of Gondor on the prowl for Sauron, out to prove that she is of Noble Blood.

With Eleanor drawing the Near Harad/Black Serpent Starting Quest, the Serpent stays put, while the Mouth travels south. Eleanor instead hits Rohan, racing to Fangorn to meet up with Saruman and then returning to Edoras, already having 5 Favors at this point. Next turn, no matter how you plan the path, she can't reach the Sea of Udun to remove Sauron's Starting Plot, so instead she hits Osgiliath and defeats a Southron, then returns to Minas Tirith and gets another 2 Favors, putting her at 7 Favors!

Sauron has only 1 Plot he can play, unfortunately, this one is also at the Sea of Udun, but he plays it anyway, fortifying the defenses around the location. But Eleanor has her 2 turns, so she reaches the Sea and though her first turn ends with a mutual exhaustion in combat against a Cave Troll, next turn she removes both Plots and then returns to Minas Tirith again. Sauron can't play a Plot, so he prepares for future turns. Eleanor now hits Near Harad and takes on the Black Serpent and then escapes to Minas Tirith, consults with Denethor and then to Helm's Deep for a chat with Theoden for a Horse. Next turn she races to Barad-Dur and completes her Advanced Quest as well.

Sauron finally gets a Plot into play, at Near Harad, moving the Yellow token. Eleanor takes it easy, returning home once again to rest, then does a quick Favor tour of Rohan. Sauron adds another Plot involving the Ring, this one at Barad-Dur as Gothmog and the Ringwraiths finally appear, the latter moving to Mt. Doom to protect the Plot. Eleanor attacks them head on, trying to get to Barad-Dur, but after dealing 7 points, fails to defeat them, ending her turn. Next turn, she falls to their Ambush. Sauron adds a third Plot moving the Yellow token, this one at Woodland Realm. Eleanor has the Favors needed and with her Horse, the cards as well, so she races to Mirkwood and removes the Plot. Next, she rides to the Iron Hills to train with Dain II and then rides back home.

By now the Yellow token has reached the Hero token at the last space of stage II, but Sauron's token is moving 4 spaces. Sauron works another Plot involving the Red token in Lothlorien, as Eleanor attacks Near Harad, first dealing some damage, the following turn defeating the Black Serpent, consulting with Boromir and then removing the Plot.

Sauron tries to block her access to Lorien, but fails and Eleanor removes another Plot, after chatting with Theoden again. By now it's clear that Finale will be reached on the same turn by the Yellow and the Hero marker. Eleanor races to the Trollshaws to chat with Gandalf and then back to Isengard for a chat with Saruman, convincing him that he is not actually corrupted, removing Sauron's latest Plot. She get a Corruption card but manages to remove it, then is Ambushed by the Mouth on the final turn, but removes that Corruption card as well, finishing off where she started, kicking back and chilling in Minas Tirith. Finale starts, Eleanor has 0 Corruption cards, completing her Mission, Sauron's Mission was to get the Red token to stage III and it's still in stage I. Eleanor wins.

2009-09-22 1 Argalad and Beravor team up, hoping to keep Sauron from conquering Middle-Earth.

As Sauron hunts for the Ring, Beravor takes a quick trip to Redhorn Gate and easily passes her Starting Quest. Argalad pops over to Forest Trail to consult with Thranduil and then ends in Lake Esgaroth. Sauron Plots in Minas Tirith. Beravor detours through Bree and meets up with Gandalf, then explores the Ruins of Angmar to complete her Advanced Quest, but is then stopped at Mt. Gundabad. Still, she has +1 Agility and Wisdom after 2 turns, but bad. Argalad heads to the South Eaves and is forced to combat the Mouth of Sauron, who he fails to defeat.

Sauron Plots in Barad-Dur, another Yellow token Plot. Beravor travels south and removes Sauron's Starting Plot, though Saruman's agents then accost her at Gladden Fields. Argalad defeats the Mouth and heads to Minas Tirith, where he collapses. Sauron is unable to Plot and the Heroes maintain dominance. Beravor is short on cards, so rest and heals and makes a quick trip to South Eaves, for an assault on Barad-Dur next turn. Argalad heads to Edoras, but fails to meet up with Theoden at Helm's Deep as Peril is setting across Middle-Earth (Argalad has -1 Wisdom Corruption among his growing collection) and Argalad is "Wretched".

Ringwraiths arrive and move to Mt. Doom to further protect Barad-Dur, but still no new Plot by Sauron. Beravor does a quick Favor run through Gondor and Rohan, finishing at the Plains of Rohan after consulting with Theoden at Helm's Deep. Argalad manages to pass through the Plains with a Corruption card, but then becomes "Wretched" in Fangorn. Sauron has now corrupted Saruman with a Plot. Beravor hits Minas Tirith to remove the Plot from there and Argalad looks to head to Rivendell in hopes of removing some of his Corruption. Sadly, the trip is interrupted by the Balrog in Moria!

Uruk-hai rise in Isengard, but Argalad manages to escape to Rivendell thanks to an Event. Beravor rushes towards Barad-Dur, as "Shire, Baggins" moves Sauron's Yellow token ahead of the Hero one. Despite going all out attack, she only deals 7 points to the Ringwraiths. Argalad chats with Aragorn in Fornost, and returns to Rivendell but otherwise no luck on removing the Corruption cards. Sauron discards the Uruk-hai Plot himself after only 1 turn, as his tokens are closing in on the Shadow Falls space, clearly he is looking to get the Black token to stage III before the Finale. As he uses the Ithil-stone to corrupt Denethor, things become even more clear. Beravor faces and is defeated by a Giant Spider at Mt. Doom. Argalad meets up with Gandalf at Trollshaws and pops back into Rivendell. As the last turn unfolds, Beravor merely sits in Minas Tirith, but fails to remove any Corruption. Argalad rests and removes 1 Corruption, but even an encounter in Rivendell does no good. Finale starts with 3 tokens in the Finale space and Sauron's Red token on the Shadow Falls space. Indeed, Sauron's Mission was to get the Black token to stage III.

With a bit of luck (no Ithil-stone for one), Heroes could've rushed the Final early. Or if they would have managed to each remove 1 Corruption card on the final turn, they also would've completed their Mission, resulting in final combat. But as it was, Sauron wins.

2009-09-21 1 Eometh, Horsemaster, on the lookout for the Spear of the West, rumoured to be of vital importance in the struggle against Sauron.

Speaking of the Dark Lord, he starts off by hunting for the Ring at Gladden Fields. Eometh rides to the Mouths of the Greyflood and ends his turn there. Next turn, back through the Gap of Rohan into Isengard for a consult with Saruman and finishing in Lothlorien. Sauron Plots against Dain II at Lake Esgaroth, another Ring Plot. The Mouth of Sauron can't leave Dol Guldur or Eometh could complete his Advanced Quest easily, but Mirkwood has a monster token in there to block things. Thus, Eometh takes the southern route and finishes in Lake Esgaroth, but fails to defeat the Orc, ending his turn. Next turn, quick consult with Dain, then removing of Sauron's Plot, ride up to the Withered Heath for a Favor and then finishing in the Woodland Realm.

Sauron changes gears and slaps Lothlorien under siege with "A Broken Line of Kings". Another monster token appears, blocking the direct route to Dol Guldur, where the next batch of Favors looks likely to come from, in the form of the Quest. Eometh throws caution to the wind and takes the straight path, defeats a Snaga, but then fails to defeat the Mouth of Sauron. Even worse, the Mouth Ambushes Eometh next turn and defeats him. Eager for vengeance, Eometh takes out the Mouth the following turn, completes his Advanced Quest (and his Mission) and then rides down south to Minas Tirith. He rests and heals there and does a quick tour in Osgiliath, grabbing a Favor before riding home to Edoras.

Sauron finally gets another Plot into play, this one at Mt. Gundabad. "Evil Fog" tosses Eometh out of Edoras and straight into the Black Serpent, who Ambushes our Hero. With 2 Corruption cards on him, the "Morgul Blade" bites deep and the Black Serpent defeats Eometh. Not one to give up so easily, Eometh rides back and returns the favor, defeating the Black Serpent and then consults with Boromir. Sadly, he is just unable to reach Lothlorien, though he now has 4 Favors, so decides to go to Edoras, where he spends 2 Favors to remove 2 Corruption cards.

Sauron stays quiet and Eometh heads through the Gap of Rohan to Tharbad, but without his Horse, the trip takes more out of him than before and he fails to defeat the Snaga there. Next turn, he collcts the 2 Favor there and then goes down the river to the Mouths, defeats a Barrow-Wight and chats with Saruman, finally travelling to Rivendell. Unbeknownst to Eometh, Saruman is now corrupted by power and Isengard falls under the shadow. Eometh heads through Moria and removes the Plot from Lothlorien. But he'll need more Favors and there are no characters in sight, so he decides to stay in Lorien. He crosses the mountains once more to collect Favors, but is stuck with Corruption in Moria. Luckily, the Favor limiter doesn't apply this turn, so he goes around, gathering all he can this turn, ending in Rivendell. A "Winter Storm" prevents him from moving far, so he stays in Rivendell and gets to remove his Corruption card and rest and heal for free.

Curtain is closing as the Uruk-hai rise in Isengard. Eometh must remove that Plot or it will be all over. Since he needs one more Favor and the nearest is in Fangorn, he take the path through Moria but then comes face to face with the Balrog! Eometh is no match for it, but he manages to escape with his life. Final turn, he rides to Fangorn, faces Peril and then grabs the Favor, heading to Isengard. At the gates he comes face to face with an Oliphaunt (in combat for the first time ever) and its Trample is too much for him. As the curtain closes, Sauron's Mission is revealed: Red token to stage III. As the Red token is at the Finale space, Sauron wins.

2009-09-18 1 Sauron hunts for the Ring, as Eleanor and Thalin set forth to protect Middle-Earth.

It's slow-going early on, as both Heroes draw the long-distance Quest. Black Serpent blocks the coastal route to Anfalas for Eleanor and Thalin plods along at a steady pace, but it still takes him 3 turns to reach the Blue Mountains. On the second turn, Sauron puts down a Plot at Lothlorien. Eleanor, seeing the Black Serpent in Anfalas now, with a monster token still in the way, does a double-back, hits Helm's Deep for a consult with Theoden and then swoops through Fangorn and Lorien to Gladden Fields to remove Sauron's Starting Plot. Thalin makes it past Angmar and ends in Bree.

Sauron Plots at Barad-Dur, with Gollum at his "mercy". He also moves the Black Serpent to Rohan, the Mouth of Sauron to Gladden Fields with Eleanor and places a monster at Barad-Dur. As mentioned, Thalin completes his Starting Quest this turn and although he has 2 Corruption cards at this point, ending his turn in the Grey Havens rids him of both. Eleanor does a sneaky move and Retreats from the Mouth, hitting the South Eaves, where the Quest she received via an Encounter card last turn has her explore. She also has a Quest to explore Near Harad, so she moves further south. Sauron puts in a Plot at Erebor, removing Dain II from there. Thalin manages to get as far as Bree on his trip to Moria. Eleanor has just enough Favors to remove the Plot at Erebor, which she barely reaches.

Sauron focuses more on the Ring, Plotting at the Plains of Rohan where Theoden and the Black Serpent are. Thalin finally reaches Moria, but the Peril draw leads to a Corruption card and it's the dreaded "Wretched". Eleanor moves down south again. With 2 Plots moving the Yellow token 2 spaces each, Sauron is finally starting to catch the Hero token. With the Plot track full, Sauron merely fortifies his current Plots, moving the Ringwraiths to Eleanor. Thalin pays off to remove the Plot from Lorien and then, as he has enough Favor left, moves to the Plains of Rohan to try and remove the Plot from there as well, but, sadly, he is defeated by the Black Serpent (finally moving the Black token in this game). Eleanor struggles against the Ringwraiths and she is left unable to move away from her location, meaning she'll face them again next turn.

Sauron initiates a Plot at Mt. Gundabad. Thalin moves in and though he fails to defeat the Black Serpent (Serpent finished at 10 of 11 damage), his Iron Will allows him to continue and remove the Plot. Eleanor is defeated at Dagorlad and is dragged all the way to Erebor!

Sauron plays another Plot at Lothlorien as well as uses "Shire, Baggins" to move the Yellow token within 1 space of Finale. Heroes must remove the Plot from Barad-Dur, or the Finale will begin after this turn. Of course, Witch-King and the Ringwraiths are blocking the paths. Thalin finds himself going up against a Giant Spider and with the damage he took from the Black Serpent last turn, he is again defeated. Eleanor moves down south, but then fails to defeat the Snaga blocking her path.

Finale begins with Sauron dominant. His Mission was to get the Red token to stage III and it is successful. If Thalin had not removed the Plot at the Plain of Rohan, Sauron would not have completed his Mission, but the final combat would've been at +4 for the Ringwraiths. Sauron wins.

2009-09-17 1 With Sauron threatening the peace of Middle-Earth, the dynamic duo of Argalad and Eometh set forth to stop him.

Argalad's first turn isn't all the great. His Quest would have him take on an Orc at South Eaves, but in anticipation, the Mouth of Sauron has moved there and Argalad fails to defeat the Minion. Eometh has more luck and despite Tharbad being Perilous from "His Arm Has Grown Long", he explores the Mouths of the Greyflood without incident. Sauron starts plotting in Woodland Realm, while Argalad defeats the Mouth in combat, then defeats the Orc to complete his Starting Quest, but is also defeated himself and dragged off to Lothlorien. Eometh rides back south and visits Isengard for a consult with Saruman, before finishing in Lorien.

Sauron has now captured Gollum at Barad-Dur, but the Black Serpent is guarding Mt. Doom. Argalad heads to Rivendell, where he gets lucky and is able to discard a Corruption card on him. Eometh does a Favor collection tour and ends in Minas Tirith. Dain II is now at Iron Hills and Sauron places a monster on his location, possibly preparing for a Plot. Argalad can't reach the Iron Hills, so he does a trip to Mt. Gundabad to complete his Advanced Quest, though he suffers more Corruption. Eometh on the other hand can and does reach the Iron Hills, all the way from Minas Tirith, but is then unable to defeat the Cave Troll, ending his turn, but removing the monster, so possibly foiling Sauron's Plot attempt.

Argalad removes the Plot from Woodland Realm and ends his turn in Erebor, but this is quickly turning into a one-horse race (pun intended). Argalad is by now drowning in Corruption, he has a limit on the Favor he may have, he can only move 3 times and he can't trade or consult. Eometh grabs double-training from Dain II and rides back toward Minas Tirith. Next turn, Argalad struggles to Rhosgobel, while Eometh gets a lucky break at Edoras and is able to remove influence from the Shadow Pool. Following turn, Argalad manages to reach Lothlorien, but with Gothmog at High Pass, he gains even more Corruption. Eometh rides to meet up with Boromir, but Peril makes him go "Wretched" and he is back in Minas Tirith.

Sauron plays a Plot affecting Edoras and fortifies its surrounding locations, moving the Ringwraiths to cover Boromir. Argalad treks through Moria to Rivendell, but has no luck in removing Corruption. Eometh charges in and defeats the Ringwraiths, consults with Boromir and then heads to Edoras to discard the Plot before it can have any effect.

As the game winds to a close, Sauron has 3 Plots in play, Argalad is utterly useless, unable to remove his Corruption and Eometh gets struck with first "Wretched", then "Winter Storm". Despite all that, the Heroes have dominance as the Finale begins. Sadly, their Mission was to finish with no more than 1 Corruption card and with Argalad by himself having 6... Sauron's Mission was to have 3 Plots Active, which he accomplishes, but no win by Mission for the Dark Lord as he never had or tied for dominance after the start. In the final combat, Argalad is hampered also by -1 Fort and Str, so Eometh with Agility of 3 gets the nod. Despite his Reckless attempts, Ringwraiths manage to defend themselves and survive, having taken 8 of 9 damage. Sauron wins.

2009-09-16 1 Beravor, Ranger of the North, the Nature-chick, hoping to stem to rise of Sauron.

Her first turn doesn't bode well, as "A New Power Is Rising" adds monsters to the board, even with Sauron taking 2 Influence actions. Add to this that "His Arm Has Grown Long" hits Grey Havens and Beravor is unable to complete her Starting Quest on the first turn, instead forced to "waste" the second turn for it. Sauron puts into play a Plot at Fangorn, where Saruman and a monster token are situated. With the path to the north blocked by a monster, Beravor races to the south, past the Gap of Rohan to Fangorn, where she consults with Saruman (monster was a blank) and then removes the Plot. Doing a quick Favor collecting tour, she then finishes at Lothlorien.

Over the next two turns, Sauron Plots at Mt. Gundabad and at Barad-Dur. Beravor has a chat with Dain II at Lake Esgaroth and then heads toward Mt. Gundabad. As she reaches her destination, she comes face to face with a Perilous Orc (Peril card for Mt. Gundabad). The trek through the mountains had cost her a lot of energy and she fails to defeat the Orc. Next turn, the monster from North Downs has moved to Mt. Gundabad (Sauron took 2 Monster/Command actions) and she is forced to fight off an Ambush by a Cave Troll. Still, she manages to survive and then removes the Plot and leaves via the Northern Waste, ending at the Ruins of Angmar.

Gothmog makes an appearance and moves to Beravor's location, while the Ringwraiths sit tight in the south. Gothmog manages to Ambush and defeat our Heroine, though he does take 8 damage himself. Beravor has by now collected a few bad Corruption cards and goes about removing a couple. Next, she hikes down south, again through the Gap of Rohan, ending in Edoras.

Sauron moves the Ringwraiths to Mt. Doom to block off access to Barad-Dur, as he remains behind in dominance and stage II is heading toward stage III. Undeterred, Beravor leaves Edoras for Barad-Dur. She fights the Ringwraiths, but is unable to defeat them, ending her turn. Next turn, they Ambush her and that combat ends in mutual destruction. Sadly for Beravor, Ringwraiths reappear the following turn, again blocking off Barad-Dur. Sauron also Plots at Edoras and seems intent on moving the Black token. A Green Flag Event card at Erebor is also moving the Black token and it will reach stage III unless the Event is removed (Beravor doesn't have the 5 Favor to remove the Plot). Dominance will most likely be tied, so it will come down to the Black token.

As she heads north, a "Winter Storm" stalls her and a Shadow card pops a fully healed Gothmog in the way as well. She attacks, but is again unable to defeat him. Sauron moves the Mouth of Sauron to Beravor and he Ambushes her, but she manages to defeat him while being defeated herself. Last turn sees Beravor tackle a monster (Huorn) south of the Woodland Realm and she defeats it, but is unable to reach Erebor. Following turn, Finale starts. Sauron's Mission was to get the Black token to stage III, but Beravor also completes her Mission, which was to keep the monster token number at no more than 2 (both sides made mistakes on the last turn).

In the final combat, the Ringwraiths draw no cards with Shields and are eventually defeated. Beravor wins.

2009-09-15 1 As Sauron once again rises to threaten Middle-Earth, the Free People call upon the E-Team (Eleanor & Eometh) to defend them.

Eometh rides to Isengard, consults with Saruman and then defeats an Agent to complete a successful first turn. Eleanor has a less easy ride, as she combats the Black Serpent in Near Harad, this time failing to "Retreat", taking heavy damage. Sauron hatches a new Plot at Mt. Gundabad, while his Starting Plot still simmers at Isengard. Eometh decides not to remove the Plot from Isengard, instead rides to Bree and then to Fornost, pushing on, but then succumbing to "Wrethed" at the Ruins of Angmar. Eleanor is still in combat with the Black Serpent and his Ambush sees her defeated! Sauron starts Plotting against Lothlorien.

Corruption has taken a hold on Eometh and he loses a pair of Favors, leaving him unable to remove the Plot at Mt. Gundabad without more Favors. So he takes a quick ride to the Shire for a chat with Gandalf, then races back up north, just making it to Mt. Gundabad and removing the Plot. Eleanor heads towards Barad-Dur, but is just unable to reach it this turn, stopping at Mt. Doom. As her next turn rolls around, she makes it to Barad-Dur and defeats a Giant Spider, completing her Advanced Quest, but she is at very low health. Eometh can only move back to the Ruins of Angmar (through Northern Waste).

Eleanor races away from Mordor, runs into a Cave Troll and manages to retreat, ending at Dead Marshes. As stage II rolls around, Gothmog moves to Eometh's location, while the Ringwraiths move to Eleanor. Next turn sees both Heroes defeated! The following turn, Eometh consults Gandalf at Weathertop and heads through the mountains to High Pass, but is unable to advance any further. Eleanor uses her turn to move to Edoras.

As the game winds down, our Heroes desperately try to keep Sauron from being dominant and manage to do so until late into stage III, but with Eometh holding 6 Corruption cards (breaking the old record of 5) and Eleanor unable to reach Lothlorien from Edoras, due to first Warg Rider and then the Black Serpent, Sauron's Red token reaches the Finale first. But Sauron's Mission was to get the Yellow token to stage III and it is barely in stage II, so final combat ensues. Or I should say, should've ensued. With Eometh having Corruption cards for -1 Agility AND Strength, he is no match for the Ringwraiths at +2 Health. Sadly, Eleanor draws a pretty much all defensive hand (and all Ranged cards to boot) and though she is the chosen champion, she is unable to make inroads against the Ringwraiths. Sauron wins.

2009-09-14 1 Buddy-buddy system before Gimli and Legolas? At least Argalad and Thalin team up before those two.

Argalad fights off against a Giant Spider on the Forest Trail, where Thranduil has appeared. His archery proves not enough to defeat the monster. This does open the way to Thalin though, who, on his way to the Blue Mountains, takes the Forest Trail and consults with Thranduil before ending at High Pass. Sauron plots against Lorien and is moving his Minions toward the north. Argalad completes his Starting Quest to explore Fangorn, but on the way back up north, runs into the Mouth of Sauron, facing the Minion in a combat that ends in mutual destruction. Well, not for Argalad, who is saved and dragged to Lothlorien just in time. Thalin crosses the mountains and hits Bree and then decides to quit his Quest and heads back down south to Tharbad.

Sauron has hatched a new Plot at Helm's Deep with Theoden. Black Serpent is hanging in the area, so Argalad heads through Dol Guldur to the South Eaves to complete a Quest he has picked up. Sadly, more Corruption means he can travel less. Luckily, he gets help from the Wood-elves and is guided to the Woodland Realm where he is able to remove one of his Corruption cards. Thranduil has re-appeared in the Woodland Realm, but Argalad is unable to get an audience just now. Thalin heads toward Helm's Deep, though not before being attacked by an Agent, who he quickly dispatches though. At Helm's Deep he faces a Warg-rider and defeats it as well, then consults with Theoden and removes Sauron's Plot, then a quick trip to Edoras, where he manages to remove one of his Corruption cards.

Sauron puts another Plot into play, this one at Woodland Realm, which removes Thranduil from the picture. Argalad is forced to detour around the forest as Gothmog is at Mt. Gundabad and there is a Huorn at Rhosgobel. Our Elf manages to reach Amon Hen and gain a Favor from there. Thalin heads back to Tharbad, where Dain II has appeared somehow. After a quick consult with his king, Thalin hits the Old Forest for a Favor and then makes camp at Weathertop.

Sauron seems happy to stick with the Plots he has in effect and concentrates on defending them. Gothmog moves down to block off High Pass and the Black Serpent rides to Argalad at Amon Hen. Argalad finds himself utterly overmatched and is soundly defeated by the Harad. Thalin does a quick consult with Gandalf at Weathertop before crossing the mountains and taking on Gothmog. Though he is unable to defeat the Minion (Thalin does deal 8 damage though), his Iron Will enables him to move on and he moves to Gladden Fields to remove Sauron's Starting Plot.

This buys our Heroes another turn, as without the removal of the Plot, Finale would've started this turn. Is it is, any difference it might've made is moot as the Finale starts after the next turn, which sees Argalad fail to defeat a Huorn and then get defeated by the Black Serpent again. Thalin cannot alone gather 4 Favors the Heroes need to complete their Mission in a turn, so it comes down to whether Sauron has completed his Mission or not. Sadly for our duo, Sauron's Mission was to get the Yellow token to stage III and the Yellow token ends at the Finale space along with the Hero token. Tie for dominance, but Sauron wins by Mission.

2009-09-12 1 Girl Power, Middle-Earth style, as Eleanor and Beravor team-up to combat evil. Though team up isn't really an accurate description, as their paths actually never cross in this game.

Eleanor starts off with a tough Quest, to combat the Black Serpent. But she completes it with no damage, thanks to a cheeky move with "Retreat". This not only gets her out of the combat without any damage, also comples her Starting Quest and moves her to an adjacent location. That location is Osgiliath, where she takes on a Southron. After defeating it, she can't quite make to Minas Tirith and then to Sea of Udun this turn to remove Sauron's Starting Plot, so instead she into Mordor, looking to complete her Advanced Quest next turn. Sadly, she ends her turn by meeting some Olog-hai, who do 8 points of damage to her. Beravor completes her Starting Quest easily as well, defeating a Crebain in the Grey Havens.

Sauron keeps the pressure on the Red token the entire game, in fact, he never plays any Plot that doesn't move the Red token, perhaps a clear indication of what his Mission is. As first Lothlorien and then Mt. Gundabad feel the grip of Sauron's might, the Heroes battle desperately to stop him.

Eleanor heads toward Barad-Dur, but her destination proves too Perilous and a "Wretched" Eleanor finds herself back in Minas Tirith. Beravor completes her Advanced Quest, but falls just short of reaching Lothlorien to remove Sauron's Plot from there (Mt. Gundabad Plot gets played on the next turn). With the South seriously cramped up, Eleanor makes an unexpected move and moves to Edoras, consults with Theoden and then to Lothlorien, as the south access is completely open. She removes the Plot and returns to Edoras. With Lothlorien cleared, Beravor looks to the north again and moves back up the Anduin toward Mt. Gundabad. Sadly, she meets a Huorn at High Pass and is unable to defeat it.

Sauron adds a Plot at Osgiliath as stage II is reached. For Beravor, this means Gothmog pops over for a visit. Eleanor challenges the Mouth of Sauron at Dagorlad (where a Favor, Aragorn and a Green Flag Event are located). Luck isn't on her side as she draws "Wretched again". Beravor manages to deal 4 damage to Gothmog and then moves to Mt. Gundabad, but the location proves too Perilous and she loses a key Favor, leaving her unable to remove the Plot and with no cards in hand, she can't move away.

Ending isn't from a fairy tale, at least not from the Heroes' perspective. Eleanor attacks the Mouth again and deals 8 damage to him before exhausting. Beravor is unable to rest and heal, so is forced to trek through the north toward Edoras. Sauron's Plots are thoroughly defended and the ladies can't reach them. With the Hero token still in stage II, Sauron's Red token reaches the Finale. As his Mission was indeed to get the Red token to stage III, Sauron wins.

2009-09-10 1 Eometh alone against the faceless evil that is Sauron.

While Sauron Hunt for the Ring, Eometh first rides to explore Mouths of the Greyflood and then takes a breather in Tharbad. Next turn he races to Rivendell, through the mountains to High Pass for a Favor and then down the Anduin to Gladden Fields, looking to remove Sauron's Plot. Sadly, both High Pass and Gladden Fields are Perilous to him and he becomes "Weary" (no wonder really after all the ground he covered) and then loses Favor, leaving him unable to thwart Sauron for now. Eometh ends his turn in Lothlorien.

Sauron increases the pressure on finding the Ring and a Plot is afoot in Woodland Realm. Eometh makes a quick stop at Isengard to talk to Saruman and then heads back to Gladden Fields, stopping Sauron's Plot. Sadly, he also runs into some Agents of Saruman, unhappy of his questioning of their boss and put the smack down on Eometh. Hightailing out of there, he rides to the Iron Hills to talk to Dain II and continues towards Woodland Realm. Unfortunately, he is attacked by a Huorn at Lake Esgaroth and his man... err, tree-handled into submission, Eometh is defeated.

Sauron hatches a new Plot, this one involving Gollum and Barad-Dur and sets about protecting it, calling the Black Serpent to Mordor and placing a monster at Barad-Dur. An "Evil Fog" dumps Eometh north of Erebor, where he is ambushed by a Barrow-wight. But Eometh comes through and reaches Woodland Realm, removing Sauron's Plot. He is forced to rest though, to remove his "Hopeless" Corruption, which would seriously limit is movement. Taking a long ride, he finally ends his turn in Lothlorien (again). Next turn sees him revisit old trails as he travels through the Gap of Rohan to Tharbad for a Favor. There he receives a Quest to go see Gandalf in Bree. Making a quick stop in Bree, he rides back down south, consulting with his lord Theoden in Helm's Deep, ending in Edoras.

After Sauron takes dominance by playing "Shire, Baggins", Eometh's only option is to assault Barad-Dur itself. Starting from Edoras, he reaches Mount Doom first. Next turn, a Shadow card drops a Giant Spider on him and though he defeats it, it manages to do some damage. But the Plot must go, so he bravely rides to Barad-Dur and faces the Black Serpent, but is unable to defeat him. Unable to challenge the mighty Harad, Eometh heads toward Minas Tirith, and just manages to reach the city.

Sauron has by now added a Plot at Isengard and another at Pelargir, the latter guarded by the Ringwraiths. Barad-Dur now has Witch-King at Mt. Doom and the Serpent in BD, so now going in there. Riding to challenge the Ringwraiths, Eometh hopes to get a tie in dominance, as Denethor is also there. Ringwraiths first hit him with Black Breath and then Morgul-blade on the Ambush step of the following turn, defeating Eometh. Middle-Earth is doomed as the Finale starts and Sauron's Mission was to get his Yellow token to stage III. Even though Sauron got 2 uses out of "Shire, Baggins", he just managed to stay ahead of the Hero token. Sauron wins.

2009-09-09 1 Argalad of the Woodland Realm on a Mission to protect Middle-Earth from Sauron.

First turn sees Argalad take a slight detour to Lake Esgaroth to consult with Dain II, defeating a Snaga on the way, spotting it with his ability, before continuing toward Fangorn, his destination. The following turn he reaches Fangorn, then Isengard to remove Sauron's Starting Plot and ends his turn in Tharbad, getting a Quest to explore Bree where Gandalf is waiting. Story Step sees no movement for Sauron, but he plays the only Plot he can at Osgiliath. Argalad meets Gandalf and completes his Quest and then heads for home to talk to Thranduil. After a quick consult, Sauron is weaker then before.

Sauron's next Plot appears at Mt. Gundabad, but it is quickly dispatched, though Argalad does finally stall at the Ruins of Angmar. Next turn Gothmog arrives and moves to Angmar and on Argalad's turn defeats the resilient Elf. Undeterred, Argalad heads down south from Fornost, through Moria into Lorien. Next turn he races all the way down to Pelargir to talk to Denethor and the defeats a Southron to remove Sauron's Plot from Osgiliath. Sauron has played a Plot affecting Edoras in the meantime, but that too is removed too quickly for his liking. Even though Argalad has bad luck in drawing Corruption cards (2 draws each of Careless and Wretched), he soon defeats the Black Serpent and then quells Saruman's Plot for power at Isengard, afterwards consulting with the wizard.

All along the way, Argalad has defeated numerous monsters, always making sure to use his ability to see what awaits. As the game rolls to the end, Sauron has a brain-snafu and miscalculates, ending the game with 2 monsters on the board. As the Hero token reaches Finale, Argalad reveals his Mission, which was to end the game with no more than 2 monster tokens on the board. Not that it would've made much difference if the game had gone to final combat. Just how badly was Sauron defeated? Well, none of his Story markers reached the Shadow Falls space and in a final combat the Ringwraiths would've been at either -4 or -6. Argalad wins by Mission.

2009-09-08 1 Our bearded, shorter friend, Thalin against the evils of Middle-Earth. For the first time, Thalin draws the Blue Mountains Starting Quest, not the best case scenario perhaps.

First two turns see Thalin making his way slowly through Mirkwood, meeting a Huorn and finally ending his turn in Rivendell, hoping to reach his destination next turn. Sauron plays a Plot at Mt. Gundabad. Thalin completes his Quest and manages to return all the way to Fornost. Sauron adds another Plot, this one at Barad-Dur, so now he is moving the Yellow token 3 spaces, Red 2.

After a quick Favor collecting trip, which unfortunately sees him draw "Isolated" Corruption card, making him unable to consult with characters, Thalin moves to Mt. Gundabad and removes the Plot from there and continues his way south along the Anduin (thanks to a Boat received at Grey Havens) and meets the Mouth of Sauron guarding Sauron's Starting Plot at Gladden Fields. Thalin makes short work of the villain and ends his turn in Lorien. Sauron returns serve by playing "A Broken Line of Kings" at Lorien. Thalin takes a trip down to Edoras to collect a Favor, then rests and removes "Isolated", follows up by consulting with Saruman and ending his turn by completing his Advanced Quest by exploring Moria. With Thalin going on fumes after a combat in Moria, Sauron uses a Sauron card to return the Mouth back to life. Mouth gets revenge on Thalin by defeating him. But Thalin discard the Boat, leaving him with the needed 4 Favors to remove the Plot from Lorien. Then he heads back down south to Edoras.

When his next turn rolls around, Minas Tirith is where he wants to be at, with Gandalf and Denethor there, as well as the Event III:14. Taking a trip to Amon Hen, he collects a Favor and then defeats a Cave Troll, but is then defeated himself in turn by the Black Serpent, though this gets him to where he wanted to go. Sadly, his defeat to the Serpent happened on his second turn, so Sauron has a turn next. Unfortunately for Thalin, this means Minas Tirith is suddenly empty of characters as Sauron plays "Urgent Summons" Plot there. Boromir makes an appearance at Osgiliath, and the Witch-King moves there. Thalin needs Favors for the Event, so he charges to meet the WK. And in the ooh-aah moment of the game, Thalin defeats the Lord of the Nazgul! Consulting with Boromir, Thalin returns to Minas Tirith. Sauron plays a Plot at Isengard, but it is clear that there will be a tie for dominance. Every path north of Minas Tirith is locked tight, so Thalin takes a trip to Belfalas and gains 3 Favors there. Sadly, a Shadow card forces an encounter with an Agent, who manages to damage Thalin with a Ranged attack, resulting in a Corruption card "Careless", forcing Thalin to lose 2 Favors, leaving him unable to remove either of his Corruptions (his Mission is to end the game with no more than 1 Corruption). Thalin makes a final trip to Minas Tirith, but no luck removing Corruption via the encounter. Finale begins and Sauron's Mission was to get the Red token to stage III. This is as unsuccessful as Thalin's Mission, so for the first time in 9 games, there is a final combat. And it's a close, tense affair, with the Ringwraiths taking all that Thalin can throw at them and just barely surviving with 8 of 9 damage taken. Hindsight being 20-20 (and helped by a peek at the Haven Encounter deck), if Thalin had squatted in Minas Tirith for both of his two turns, he would've drawn the Houses of Healing encounter, gotten to remove a Corruption card and won by Mission. As it goes, Sauron wins (by the skin of his teeth).

2009-09-07 1 Taking the two-pronged approach to stopping Sauron - Beravor (North) and Eometh (South) team up.

Although Eometh rides and completes his Starting Quest on the first turn by exploring the Mouths of the Greyflood, an Orc stops Beravor from doing the same at Redhorn Gate. Sauron plays a Plot on the following turn and then things go haywire. When the following Story Step comes around, Sauron has no Plots in play and this situation will remain so for the next 3-4 turns, with Thranduil, encounters poking holes in the Shadow Pool and influence removal in the Hero Rally Step nerfing attempts as well. This allows the Heroes to build a huge lead on the Story Track and even when Sauron finally manages to play a Plot, it only remains in play for one turn. Defending his Plots isn't helped by the 7 of 11 blank monster tokens drawn in the game.

Eometh completes his Advanced Quest and takes out the Mouth of Sauron while at it. Beravor also completes hers, though she keeps her distance from Gothmog. Only after the Heroes are almost in stage III, does Sauron manage to play and keep a Plot in play. Following turn he adds another Plot, now he is moving the Yellow token 4 spaces, but that will only be enough to reach stage III, not catch the Hero token. With victory guaranteed, Heroes sit back and watch the Finale arrive. As Eometh had 6 and Beravor 2 Favors and their Mission was to have at least 5, Free People rejoice as Sauron's reign of 7 win by Mission is brought to an end. First win by Mission for the Heroes as well.

2009-09-06 1 Argalad and Eleanor team to try to thwart Sauron's growing influence. Right off the bat, Sauron utilises the Black Serpent to block Eleanor's southern route to her Quest goal, Anfalas. Mouth of Sauron also advances in Mirkwood, forcing Argalad to detour, which sees him unable to reach Fangorn on the first turn. With his initial Plot moving the Red token, Sauron plays another Plot that moves it by one on the following turn. Black Serpent continues to block off Eleanor from Anfalas, though Argalad completes his Starting Quest.

With the south clogged, Eleanor heads north, toward Mt. Gundabad, where another Sauron Plot has begun, this one moving the Red token 2 spaces (so total of 4 now). She makes it to the Ruins of Angmar, but then faces a dilemma, either enter Gundabad which has a monster token on it with 0 cards in hand or move to the north-east of Gundabad for cheap access next turn. She takes the latter option, which proves a bit disastrous, as the Red token advances to stage II and Gothmog arrives to bolster the defenses. Argalad tried to remove Sauron's Starting Plot, but failed to defeat a Giant Spider. As stage II brings out the Ringwraiths, they move to the Plot's location but in a shocking twist, Argalad defeats them. Eleanor tries to remove the Plot from Gundabad but is unable to defeat Gothmog and the following turn Sauron plays Shadow card that gives her a Corruption card at the start of her combat with Gothmog, it's "Wretched". By this time, the Black Serpent has moved adjacent to Minas Tirith (where Argalad was dragged to after finally being defeated by the Ringwraiths on the second attempt), Eleanor decides to forget about Gundabad and goes back to her Starting Quest. With a hand full of cards, she moves from Rivendell down to Anfalas, completes her Quest (the monster token there was a blank) and continues on, foiling Sauron's Plots at Pelargir and Osgiliath, ending her turn in Minas Tirith, after trading with Argalad. Sadly, all paths anywhere but south are now blocked, but Argalad moves to a monster token (forgetting his ability while at it), which is a Cave Troll and Argalad fails to defeat it.

Stage III is closing in on the Finale by now, Sauron puts in another Plot, this one moving the Black token, but it will all come down to whether either Hero can reach Gundabad in 2 turns and remove the Plot from there. Argalad is defeated by the Black Serpent at Isengard and is out of the question. Eleanor starts from Moria and meets the Mouth at High Pass and makes devious use of Retreat to slip past him into Gundabad. Sadly for our Heroes, she is unable to take out Gothmog and can't remove the Plot. Next Story Step, Finale begins with the Hero token just 1 short of Finale. Sauron's Mission proves successful, as it was to get the Red token to stage III. In hindsight, Eleanor decision to not go to Gundabad with 0 cards proves the key point, as that token was a blank (Sauron drew 5 of 8 blank monster tokens in fact). Sauron wins.

2009-09-03 1 In a game of firsts, Eleanor is the only Hero standing in the way of the Shadow.

For the first time, Eleanor draws the Near Harad Starting Quest and goes to work immediately, combatting the Black Serpent, though with minimal damage. Ambush step of her next turn sees her quite badly damaged, but she survives and takes refuge in Minas Tirith. Sauron takes a multi-color approach to his Plots, playing a Yellow 2 to go with his Black 1 Starting Plot. Eleanor doesn't want to take on the Black Serpent again (Plot affects Near Harad, where Boromir was), so instead she raids Barad-Dur to complete her Advanced Quest. Sauron puts on Red 2 Plot affecting Gundabad next and Eleanor plans what to do next.

She unleashes her fury against the Black Serpent, driving him back and then finishing him off in the Ambush step. As her Mission is to keep Minas Morgul at bay (no more than 2 Minions in play), this is an unexpected bonus. She also removes Sauron's Plot from Near Harad. But constant combats force her to rest more than usual, meaning Sauron's token keep moving steadily up, though Eleanor still has dominance. Next on her agenda is the Mouth of Sauron, who, despite dropping Corruption cards on her and using Morgul Blade, is the next minion to fall!

Eleanor then gets shifted over to Woodland Realm by an Event card. This is where Sauron has a Yellow 1 Plot in play and Dain II is right next to WR at Lake Esgaroth. There is also a monster token there, which turns out to be a Giant Spider and it proves too tough for Eleanor to take out. With 2 Corruption cards on her, Sauron plays Creatures of the Wild, which forces a combat with a Cave Troll, and this proves too much for her and she is defeated. This also moves Sauron's Black token to Shadow Falls space (Red and Yellow already past it), so Finale starts for the first time due to Shadow Falls. Sauron's Yellow marker just makes it to stage III which proves to be his Mission. Game also saw 6 different characters in play, a new high. And a final first, as no Event cards from stage III deck were drawn. But no first in Sauron winning.

2009-08-31 1 Eometh and Thalin set forth to save Middle-Earth. But both ran into immediate setbacks. Thalin had no Mountains cards and could only move once. As for Eometh, Sauron had moved the Black Serpent to Minas Tirith and then placed a monster token between Edoras and MT, then played a Shadow card that allowed him to move Eometh to an adjacent location, so Eometh's turn started with a combat against a Southron. This cost him enough cards that he was unable to reach Isengard for his Quest. Things got worse over the next two turns for the Heroes, as Sauron put two Plots that both moved the Red token 2 spaces (and his Starting Plot moved Red 1), so Sauron had dominance all of the stages II and III.

Heroes managed to remove a couple of Plots, but could not touch the Plot at Mt. Gundabad. They were forced to gather Favors from all over, so by the time they had enough to discard that Plot, Witch-King had arrived (they were also forced to use Favors to remove Corruption cards). High points for the Heroes was Eometh defeating the Mouth of Sauron and the Ringwraiths. In fact, had their Mission been to kill all but 2 of the Minions, I think Eometh + Thalin combo could've at least completed theirs, whether or not they would've gotten dominance is another matter.

In the end, Sauron's Red token reached the Finale space with the Hero token still in stage II. Granted, Sauron did luck out, getting all those Red token moving plots during setup AND then drawing the Red token to stage III Mission. This luck was slightly balanced by him drawing 60% blank monster tiles, but he still won quite comfortably.

2009-08-30 1 Introducing a friend to MEQ, he draws Beravor.

First Event gives a big break for Beravor, as it is I:14, pretty much the only possible draw for that Event to be applied. One the first two turns, she completes her Starting Quest (to explore Redhorn Gate) and then visits Gandalf in the Shire. Sauron puts in a Plot that moves the Red token by 2, to go along with the starting Red 1 Plot. Beravor then completes her Advanced Quest, but loses a turn to "Wretched" and is unable to remove the new Plot.

Beravor does manage to remove no less than 3 Plots during the game, but Sauron still pushes ahead on the Story track, as all of his active Plots all move the Red token. Ringwraiths are also sneaking along the Gondor coastline, looking like they are heading to the Shire. Despite rarely visiting a Haven, Beravor's ability allows her to heal pretty much anywhere and if no need to heal, receive training when resting. She is never defeated during the game, though comes close on a couple of occasions, including her battle with the Balrog as she was desperate to reach Lothlorien, to remove Sauron's Plot from there.

As the Ringwraiths reach the Shire, Beravor charges ahead in a desperate push to defeat them. Her first turn sees her defeat a Dunlending, on her second turn she reaches the Shire, but is short on cards, even though her Agility is at 4. Ringwraiths take 3 damage, but no more. Next turn, Red token reaches the Finale and indeed, Sauron's Mission was to get RWs into the Shire (or 6 influence there).

2009-08-29 1 Argalad and Eleanor team up to liberate Middle-Earth from evil. Their Mission turns out to be to keep Minas Morgul at bay, which truthfully doesn't bode well.

As usual, the first order of business is to tackle Starting Quests. Argalad surprisingly fails to defeat a Snaga blocking the path to his goal, which ends his turn short. Eleanor on the other hand has the usual, coastal route to Anfalas blocked by a monster token and the Black Serpent. Her starting hand doesn't seem good enough to even deal minor damage to the Serpent, so she detours through the Gap of Rohan. Argalad recovers and defeats the Mouth of Sauron, consults with Aragorn, but is then defeated by the Orc of his Quest. Eleanor completes her Quest.

Sauron soon has 2 Plots that both move the Yellow marker 2 spaces, allowing him to catch and then pass the Hero marker, giving him dominance. Argalad finally passes his Starting Quest on the third turn while Eleanor collects more Favors. Corruption proves a less common than in the last couple of games. Eleanor hits Isengard in a desperate attempt to remove the Saruman Plot that Sauron just played that turn, but the Plot has made Isengard Perilous and she is defeated. Things are looking very bad for our Heroes, as Argalad is also defeated by Gothmog, while trying to explore Mt. Gundabad. Sauron's other two plots are guarded by a mass of monsters and the Ringwraiths at this point, so the only option left is to try to breach Isengard again, in case Sauron's Mission is to have 3 Plots active.

Eleanor completes an encounter Quest to explore Moria and then heads down towards Isengard. Path through Lothlorien-Fangorn is out of the question, as the Black Serpent sits in Fangorn, but the Gap and Isengard both have 1 monster token as well. Eleanor reaches the Gap of Rohan and meets Warg-riders. And she is defeated. Finale begins and Sauron's Mission indeed was to have 3 Plots active.

2009-08-28 1 Eometh battles the forces of evil alone. Luck is not with Eometh, as the first Event card drawn allows Sauron to remove Saruman from Isengard, which is also where Eometh's Starting Quest takes him. Agent goes down easily. His Advanced Quest gives him more problems as he is unable to breach Dol Guldur on his second turn. Worse is to follow, as Sauron puts into play a Plot that neutralizes Lothlorien on his turn. Sauron is also spreading influence around, making more locations perilous. Eometh gets an encounter Quest to explore the Plains of Gorgoroth, buts in hindsight, taking on this Quest proves costly. Peril after Peril eats away at him and he starts collecting Corruption cards. Finally he is defeated and slumps back to Minas Tirith.

Sadly, by the time he wakes up, Minas Tirith is surrounded on all sides. Eometh takes the path Edoras, but is "Betrayed" and loses a combat to a Southron. Next turn he treks to Isengard, getting more Peril, but at least stopping Sauron from adding the Plot that required 3 influence in Isengard (Red token is already moving 3 steps). Next turn, he finally explores Dol Guldur and gains an additional Favor as well. If he can remove 1 Plot next turn, he'll have bought himself more time. But alas, it is not to be, as an Agent catches him at Gladden Fields and with its special ability, Eometh gets another Corruption card, the dreaded "Wretched" this time. His turn ends. Next Sauron turn, the Red token moves from step 1 in stage III to the Finale space. Sauron has dominance and reveals his mission: Get the Red token to stage III. Sauron wins.

2009-08-27 1 Eleanor tries to rally the Free Peoples against Sauron by herself. Her first two turns go about as smoothly as they can. She explores Anfalas and passes her Starting Quest, next turn meets up with Boromir, giving her plenty of Favors and a boost in Agility. But Travel step ate so many cards that she can't press on into Mordor and Barad-Dur, where her Advanced Quest would take her, so she ends her turn in Minas Tirith.

But when her next turn rolls around, Gondor-Mordor area is swarming with monster tokens and minions, which makes her Mission of removing all but 2 monster tokens look very unlikely. North of Minas Tirith is Mouth of Sauron, Black Serpent guard Minas Morgul, monster token is in Osgiliath, another is guarding the Sauron Plot in Sea of Udun and finally one monster is waiting at Barad-Dur (Sauron placed a monster both turns and also played "A New Power Is Rising" to place 2 additional monsters). Eleanor tries to take on the Mouth of Sauron but fails to defeat him ("Betrayed" didn't help). Unable to make headway into the enemies, she is forced to slip out of Gondor, first to the Gap of Rohan, then onto Rivendell. Sauron gets another Plot into play, this time at Iron Hills, where Dain II is lured by the Ring (Yellow Token is now moving 4 spaces a turn). Black Serpent rushes to defend that Plot and drops a monster token as another speed bump.

And that's where Eleanor's hopes are dashed. Having collected enough Favors to remove the Plot, she charges forward, but is defeated not once, but twice by the Black Serpent, Sauron's Yellow Token is now well ahead of the Hero token. Event deck almost buys her another turn, as the Arnor card removes influence from around Fornost, but Sauron manages to reconnect the Shire and then plays "Shire, Baggins" to further move the Yellow Plot marker. Finale hits with Sauron utterly dominant (Hero token wasn't even in stage III), and he has also completed his mission, Yellow token to stage III. First win without final combat for either side.

2009-08-27 1 Tale of Thalin the Corrupted.

Wisdom of 1 and heavy application of Infuence leads to a lot of Peril (also, Sauron had 2 "His Arm Has Grown Long" in his starting hand) which leads to a lot of Corruption. At "best", Thalin has no less that 5 Corruption cards on him, including the one that limits him to 1 Favor per turn, making their removal extremely hard, especially as not even the Haven encounters seem to remove them. On top of that, his Mission is to have 5+ Favor at the end of the game, and he keeps bleeding Favors due to Peril and Shadow cards.

Eventually he gets a break at Rivendell and removes the Favor limiter. Before long he is down to 1 Corruption card, but also without Favor and the Favors currently on the board are in the eastern Middle-Earth, while Thalin is stuck west of the Misty Mountains. His first crossing fares poorly, as the Black Serpent rides him down with a "Morgul Blade". Sauron is advancing the Yellow token 3 steps a turn and has taken dominance. Thalin tries, but fails to slow Sauron's Plots and turns his attention to collecting Favors in hopes of completing his Mission, if Sauron doesn't complete his, as the Hero Token is trailing behind. In the end, Thalin doesn't complete his, but neither does Sauron (his was to get the Black token to stage III). Ringwraiths get +2 Fortitude and Health and for most of the final combat it looks like they'll outlast Thalin, who is closing in on exhaustion. But at the final moment, Thalin hits home with Execution and the Ringwraiths are defeated.

2009-08-26 1 Argalad takes on Sauron all by himself. With the Hero getting 2 turns in a row, he covers about as much ground as Eometh. But going alone, he has to be more careful about tackling the Minions. As Argalad's Mission was Noble Blood and he keep getting Corruption cards every now and then, he is forced to spend Favors to discard them, meaning less Favors to discard Sauron's Plots. This results in Sauron getting dominance as his Black token moves 6 spaces a turn in the end. But Sauron's Mission was to get the Yellow token to stage III, so he doesn't win outright (ironically, yesterday, Sauron had the Black token to stage III mission, but couldn't get any Plots involving that token to stay in play), but he has dominance and Ringwraiths get +3 Fortitude and Health. Even though Argalad had gained +1 to Fortitude, Strength and Agility, he is unable to deal 12 points of damage. Sauron outlasts to win. Details
2009-08-26 1 Beravor tries to save Middle-Earth by himself. He completes his Starting and Advanced Quest is no time at all, but it soon becomes apparent that he won't be able to complete his Mission, as Sauron keeps dropping monster tokens all over the map. So instead, Beravor tries to keep dominance.

And for most of the game he does, but eventually the Sauron Plot-machine starts rolling, moving the Red token 4 spaces a turn. On the last two turns, Beravor collects the needed Favors and gets rid of the only Plot he can reach, which proves key as Sauron's Mission was to have 3 Plots in play. Neither side is dominant, so it's a straight up combat. Beravor gets a very good draw, including all 3 of the Skill cards he gained via Training during the game and trounces the Ringwraiths.

2009-08-25 1 Eleanor and Eometh take on Sauron. Man that Eometh can cover ground fast. That Horse at setup is a huge bonus. Starting Quests were once again completed early, while Sauron was having trouble getting Plots into play. Advanced Quests took a bit longer, with Eometh failing to defeat the Mouth of Sauron at Dol Guldur.

Still, Sauron managed to get 2 Plots in play that both moved the Yellow token, so Finale was reached with neither side dominant. Of course, this would've been meaningless, if the Heroes had played the last 2 turns more conservatively, or wussed out depending on your point of view. Their Mission was to finish with 1 or less Corruption cards, but unfortunately, Eleanor got into a combat with the Mouth and then a Sauron card added another Corruption card. As Sauron's mission was to get the Black token to stage III and he failed miserably (seriously, no Plot moving the Black token survived long enough to even move the token), so it went to combat. Ringwraiths got a pleasantly good draw and managed to outlast (outwit and outplay) Eometh.

2009-08-24 1 Beravor and Thalin take on Sauron.

As their Mission is to complete their Starting and Advanced Quests, that's where the Heroes focus early on. Only hickup comes when Thalin enters Moria and meets the Balrog, who soundly thrashes the dwarf. Thalin had earlier defeated Gothmog on the first turn he entered the game! But on the second go, Quest completed. Beravor has no trouble with his Quests.

As soon as the Ringwraiths appear, they make a beeline toward the Shire. Beravor tries to stop them, but is defeated.

In the end, Finale sees neither side dominant and both have completed their missions. In the combat, Thalin soundly defeats the Ringwraiths.
