Sidereal Confluence is the king of positive player interaction for me. Optimal play imo is deal making to help all players produce resources as efficiently as possible, while being a part of as many of those deals as possible. High tide lifts all boats. It’s not a zero sum game where you’re trying to get a bigger share than others of a finite pie, but rather you’re increasing the size of the pie. Eg 60% of a small pie is less than 40% of a big pie.

It doesn’t have combos in the sense of cascading actions, but there is a lot of engine building.

Lords of Waterdeep, particular with the expansion, has a lot of cards where you get a reward but also have to pick another pkayer to receive an award. There’s also some synergy/combos with plot quests.

I've also got overwhelmed by over 50p rules although I bought this fascinating campaign game right after the release.

Fate of Spee squadron, Rufiji river skirmish, Indean ocean raids... each of them has forgotten but irresistible stories.
I just hope it becomes easier to play.

Checking the connections does indeed help determine whether a shape is connected to the outer arc. I hadn’t noticed the text prompt before. It would be even better if the color of the outer arc changed as well, but the current approach works fine too.

Lol An expert on what, his own tastes? It's become his favorite game of all time so quickly? I don't know if I trust that fast of a switch. I'm assuming his previous favorite game was probably Mage Knight, and unless this game is the exact same mechanics but slightly streamlined, I can't see KCD the board game beating out MK. I watched a video and looked over the rules, board, components, etc. Maybe it's good but I can already tell it's not going to usurp the king.

Then who are the experts in your opinion?

I’m a mood reader, so always have several books going at once. Currently I’m reading:

2034 by Ackerman & Stavridis, which bills itself as a novel of the next world war, but it depends on Klingon level stealth technology, so no, I don’t think so. Still, a well-paced read if you like that sort of thing.

Rebecca by duMaurier. This is a re-read before reading The Housekeeper which is told from the perspective of Mrs. Danvers. Being older & somewhat wiser, I can see how books like Rebecca helped normalize neurotic, anxious women rather than addressing what are clearly the symptoms of abuse & PTSD in women.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, another re-read, partly for spooky month, & partly before reading her new book Mystery Play, which occurs generations later. I also re-read Carmilla this month prior to trying to read Hungerstone, which I had to DNF because the writing was just abysmal IMO. Doesn’t capture the original mood, wooden dialogue, zero nuance.

Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich, a classic of scientific nature writing. What can I say? Ravens are the coolest!

Even if it were meant as one, the game you already own is however good it was before. It’s not an app. You don’t need the continued work of the publisher to make it function. So your money wouldn’t be wasted if Rebirth II were supposed to replace the original.

These have been fixed, and a new version has been uploaded. I also updated a few of the abilities, after having played with the cards for several years. For example, Frost Man no longer changes the shape of your opponent's unit, Buster Rod G doesn't require you to write down information, and Duo and Search Man are no longer a duplicate of each other.

That's neither here nor there. As long as they're not pretending it's a review, there's nothing wrong with paid previews. I'd rather they put as much information out there as possible so that consumers can make informed decisions. Like how Leder and Cole Wehrle release play test kits and TTS mods regularly.

Pretty cool game, between this, Psycho Raiders and Sea Evil, there are some pretty unique situations and in this one I really loved all the crazy items you can find.

Few things had me unsure how to play them:
Die-o-ramas, do they only effect Teens? What about Good Workers or Creeps? And can they continue to harm or demoralize if you remain in line of site?
In a similar vein regarding the advanced rule about carnival games are only the Teens taking part? Does that include Barry? Are the "Prizes" drawn supposed to specifically be the items marked with Prize?
Can only Teens use the Gain Composure action?
Freakface's syringe: on a 6 teen draws a freak card and becomes that freak. Is that distinct from the Lucian holding a teen in a lab endgame or can you continue playing as a freak (was so unsure how to play that one I just made every effort to avoid Freakface!)
Does Bags Dugal's Hypno Pipes effect Creeps?
Strong man bell! Just for flavor?
Finally I had a little confusion regarding hiding and secret passages. Looking for a passage is not really an action but I take it if successful on a hex with only one hide token its basically giving yourself away resulting in all hide tokens being removed? My interpretation of the hiding/action rules is you can take or bluff an action while hidden with 1 hide token per turn but if you are actually successful busting own a location wall for example you have to be honest and unhide all your pieces.

One last hiding clarification but I think Don't Let the Wolves has a slightly modified wording, but generally the rule is if you use will or adrenaline only one of the three hide tokens can benefit from a movement boost. Not all three could get 5 extra moves from adrenaline, or could you divvy it up 2/2/1?

I am currently working with a European publisher to make it possible for them to handle the production and distribution of an English edition of Eternal Decks.
If I were to distribute the English/Japanese edition that I produce in Europe, the retail price would become quite high due to additional costs such as import duties, shipping fees, and various handling fees.
Therefore, I believe it would be better for a European publisher to handle both production and distribution.

I don't know when this will happen, but even at the earliest, it will probably take at least another four months.

Also, the retail price of Eternal Decks in Europe has been set a little lower than I would like.
I have asked them to bring the price closer to that of the English/Japanese edition I produce (7,000 yen).
In return, I have also asked whether they could make the components closer to my edition, or perhaps even make them a little more deluxe.

In addition, we will not actively sell the English edition in countries where Eternal Decks has already been localized or where a localized edition is planned.
However, I believe it will still be possible for people in those countries to purchase the English edition, although it will not be actively promoted or distributed there.

Personally, I want to make Eternal Decks available in English throughout Europe because I know there is demand for it.
However, shipping the edition I produce in Japan to Europe would make it quite expensive.
That is why I believe having a European publisher take responsibility for production and distribution would be the best solution.

At the same time, I want to protect and support the various European publishers who have invested their time and effort into localizing Eternal Decks.
I believe it is important to respect and reward their efforts.
In the long run, I believe this will also help create an environment where my future games can be more easily published and distributed throughout Europe.

I hope you can understand my position and the reasons behind these decisions.

We arrived at our event late the first evening and a friend was excited to play Pastiche, so we got into it straight away.

I really enjoy this rummy-like tableau-building (sort of?) game. I am fairly bad at it, and maybe next time I will remember how important it is to not play big long melds. But, I was one card away from 15 points, which did not help because this was a very high scoring game, with the winner getting 20 or maybe more?

This was new to us all, and I am normally only middling in terms of my feelings about climbing games, but I like what this is doing quite a bit. I don't know if I got lucky or the hand manipulation details just clicked for me, but I won 3 cheese, 3 cheese, and 2 cheese in the three rounds.

The "bait" mechanism and way it interacts with the other players and with the no-hand-reordering rules is interesting and fun.

The second day, other folks were in games already or not yet up, so a friend suggested a quick game of Dark Pact. We're both fans of Tom's games, and this has been a recent hit for us both. We played without preset pacts, and I got the Coins of the Realm Pact early enough and managed to blitz to that goal before my opponent even got a pact in his deck (or maybe he got one but not out?). I continue to love the diversity of how this game plays out and the feeling that the deck itself is the goal.

The premise of this seems like it's just yet-another-drawing game, and it sort of is, but it's quite fun, and the particular mechanism (you can draw, but only on pre-supplied scribbled lines) enforces a kind of bad drawing that feels different than some others. The usual way a game like Telestrations or Caution Signs can solve this is by making the thing you're drawing absurd or weird, and this games works better than something like Squint, which also forces you to "draw" badly by giving you limited elements in a different way.

We played the 4 rounds and got 100% flawless deduction. Cute!

[/BGCOLOR] Race for the Galaxy x4 (190 all-time)
One of the event hosts and I have been playing Race together for over 18 years, but for both of us, Xeno Invasion had slid under the radar, but our interest was reignited by the release of Xeno Counterstrike. I'm most interested in trying the crazy Counterstrike game, but that's a bigger endeavor and the recommendation is to start with Invasion games and Frontier games to learn the rules (which I'm skeptical of) but worked out that's what we had time for anyway, on each of several occasions.

We played 3 Frontier games and 1 Invasion game, both of which are interesting and appealing elaborations for Race. I did very poorly in two of the games and lost by 1 in one game and managed to eke out a win by 1 point in the final game of the weekend. I basically pulled off a Produce/Consume build combined with the Frontier Isolationists. I also correctly managed to piggy back on other players' Produce cycles, which despite being the core of Race, is not something I always do well at.

I am looking forward to trying the Counterstrike game.

In the continuing saga of this being a game I really like but am not good at, I played twice more, and learned my lesson to get out a fair amount of birds, but not quite enough points worth of birds.

I don't like to think me winning or losing affects how much I like a game too much, but it definitely can. What I like about a game like this (or Race) is that the engine I build can be satisfying and engaging to build, even if the engine isn't good enough to win the game.

I really like the bingo mechanism here and the way the landscape building and the power is interact is a lot of fun. When I've played this before, it felt like it's sort of dragged though. This play ended up moving right along, and as a game that doesn't drag this is actually quite good. I suspect in the end it's very vulnerable to analysis paralysis and we happened to have a set of four people who didn't fall victim to that which was very nice.

If I could figure out how to retain this style of play around the table this would get more play so I will have to think about how to do that.

In the end I lost by one point even though my stork migration scored quite well. A shark swimming through the large inland Sea we had and eating up all the fish ended up giving it to my opponent.

This is a "cardcore" game which was the name some YouTuber coined but didn't like, but I think is a good name for the genre: tons of unique cards with "tags" and abilities that interact with resource generation and other aspects of the game. So, similar to Terraforming Mars or Ark Nova.

There's some similarity thematically and mechanically with "Let's Go to Japan", but heavier than that. It's good but was quite long (3 hours) and I lost by one and it was a specific final turn error to make matters worse!

The resources and general structure of planning are quite fun but not anything super special that grabbed me, but I can see it having high appeal for some people.

I really like the idea of this as a science fiction pickup and deliver game but it's got a little too much "take that" elements and is a little too luck dependent. I don't think I would have won anyway but getting very bad die rolls is extremely constraining and there's not enough other especially fun things going on here to offset the annoyance when the look goes badly or the take that element feels harsh.

I'd hoped to play forward into some previously unplayed scenarios given many folks at this event had played Bomb Busters before, so we weren't stuck on the early scenarios. One player hadn't played before, so we did end up starting out with scenario 8, but she realized she had played before, and we won handily. We jumped forward to scenario 17 [o](the one where the captain "lies")[/o], which I hadn't played.

We lost 3 times in a row before finally winning scenario 17. I'm not sure why it was so hard for us, but as always, still rather fun. We cut a red wire twice!

This is, as far as I can tell, the only cooperative trick-taking polyomino game there is. I'm a big fan of there existing games for such comibinations of attributes, so well done. We played scenarios 1, 2, 4 and 5, which doesn't even fully "unlock" some of the gameplay but it gets a bit more than the basics.

The first two scenarios are tutorial-ish and sort of play themselves, but are fun despite that, and the later scenarios make it harder. Which card wins the trick (mostly) determines which polyomino you place to try to surround board elements, with other constraints. And there's a rotating trump suit.

I enjoyed this, and am very glad to have played it but it wasn't a home run, partially because I'm sort of saturated on coop trick taking. I'd play it again though.

Every time we play this, it feels like we're going to lose, and we finally actually did. We played with two new players and I played Sindra, and did not do a great job at it, and we had multiple hero "deaths". There were some good epic moments, but less so than our other plays. One player actively cycled through their ability cards to see what there was which may or may not be a good strategy. I'm not sure.

The dwarf is a pretty great tank, but we just didn't have any way of dealing with massive hordes, and Sindra was built (this game) for single big mega-damage. Next time, we'll save Grimheim.

Some folks were very intrigued by my description of this game (coop Czech Hardy Boys style mid 20th century urban adventure) and asked me to bring it and I'm glad we got a game in. We played scenario 2 and lost by a single action card/tempo. Embarrassingly, I forgot to deal items, so maybe we would have just barely won with those. Or maybe we shouldn't have played on the hardest setting? But I've found the easy settings very easy, so this was probably the right call.

While this play was harder than previous plays, it was also quite satisfying, as we pulled off several fun capers and it felt entertainingly dramatic.

I brought this at the request of a friend who we played with. This is such delightful chaos. There's real game choices here, but there's also a lot of random number generation that really drives the outcomes, and it does so in a way that feels exciting and fun. Other games with a similar level of randomness often feel capricious or unfair, and this feels charmingly chaotic.

I got eliminated first (which triggers the endgame) and lots of cards got smashed into ramps or the sides of the canyon with lots of wanton destruction. This game so successfully does what it's trying to do.

I see what everyone loves about this, and I think I was right that it's not really for me. The turn taking mechanism is very clever and interesting, and as connection games go it's got some good things going on. And, it's adorable. On the negative side, I feel like the stack claiming aspect is the kind of area-influence I don't love, and the gameplay in general sort of demands 'mean' play, which isn't my favorite. Lots of connection games suffer from this, and maybe I'm just feeling it, having my big chain cut off.

We played scenario 23 four times. The first three games we misunderstood the rules about Aragorn having to win a majority of tricks to include the tricks that were discarded. Then in the fourth game we won even if we had played by our misunderstanding of the rule. But the constraints made the game a lot tighter. So remember if you discard tricks they no longer account as part of the tricks that exist at all for having to take him a majority.

But overall a good scenario with some interesting handoffs required.

The final night ended with several rounds of So Clover, and we had two games with only a single error, even with people adding variable numbers of distractors (4 or 5 by one player!).

We then played a variant where all the players throw their cards into a pile with no distractors and all cards (16 in this case) have to be assigned to the 4 different clovers. This works quite well, and we almost got it all perfect on the first try, but did not. Nor the second try. But the third try, we nailed it, all for a single card in error.

I don't love TTR, but it's approachable, generally well liked and easy to teach for new folks, and some folks love it, so it's been in my collection for a long time. But, I relatively rarely have spontaneously suggested it, but then I went a decade barely playing it at all, and I actually have thought "I want to play this" more often, and we had the right time interval on BGA, so played. We mostly play towards the friendly side (not a lot of aggressive blocking) but the 3p board is tight enough there was some.

One of the other players zoned out on the nobles, so I managed to blitz to two of them which quickly ended the game with exactly 15 while the other players' engines were just getting started. I also claimed two cards preemptively (the gold chip action) which I feel like I don't usually do, and it worked well for me so maybe worth remembering as a correction to my default play mode, even though that usually works out pretty well for me too.

We crushed the parent-child teams, which was rather funny. I am very glad I managed to get a copy of the good edition (blue box) for my daugther!

My daughter managed to pull off a fairly dramatic Stem Cells win. Stem Cells is an Age 10 card that lets you dump your hand into your score pile.

Three of us were all progressing well enough, and the ages were jumping forward with 10s ending up in hands and tabelaus, but no one was quite able to pull a win out from them directly, and she had a huge hand from some lucky Physics draws and other effects and managed to dump a handful of 10s and other high value cards into her score pile for a massive 70+ score and achieve her way to victory without us being able to stop her.

We played scenario 10 and I don't know if this scenario is easier, we got lucky, or we just had the mind-meld going, but we one this one in a mere 5 turns (or was it 6) and we decided to play again since it was so short. We played scenario 11 and we won in a mere 7 turns. While we've definitely gotten better at this game, and we often win before the first heart-to-heart, I think these were our two quickest victories ever. Very satisfying, especially when one correctly intuits what a particular change is demanding.

We played just the basic game and managed to take advantage of the pilot's mobility to zip around the southern part of Europe and cure diseases with only two epidemics and one outbreak.

This is yet another example (like Wingspan Pocket) of a game that I feel like nicely distills the essence of a game into a faster but very fun not-too-simplified version.

Some evidence suggests early card draws may be a strategic advantage. Maybe. Fun in any case, for me.

The other game finished and we rearranged. At the first version of this game night 25 years ago, apparently the two games played were Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan. Another table was playing a (long) game of Puerto Rico, so we picked up the mantle of Catan.

Our (random) map had some serious brick shortage and I overindexed on a decent way to get to longest road, but failed to have enough resources (or ports) to ever get to cities, so while I pulled out ahead in score, I stalled out at 7 while others zoomed past despite the general brick shortage.

Apparently Reiner Knizia has published 11 different Sudoku-themed/titled board games, none of them well-regarded on BGG. This game isn't horrible but it isn't good. It sort of plays itself, is just enough not-Sudoku-like in spots to be a little annoying. It also has the weird property that making a mistake, if it's caught, carries no greater penalty than being unable to play which happens often. So, it encourages (demands?!) the players try to violate the rules and not get caught, which is not a gameplay element I enjoy.

I've been "in the hobby" for almost 30 years and have been quite acquisitive of games I like or think I'll like. As a result, I have very few high priority games on my wishlist, and the various hard-to-find or OOP games I've wanted, I've managed to acquire over the decades. I mostly haven't had any "grail" games.

Except for Quodd Heroes. I somehow missed it when it came out in 2019, and even after this it was rare and hard to find. So, when they launched a 2nd edition crowdfunding campaign in 2022, I was quick to get aboard. Unfortunately, this is one of two ((!) out of over 200) crowdfunding campaigns I've backed that utterly failed. This wasn't a "take your money and run" situation, but some mis-management of funds and debt. So, my 2nd edition copy was never going to arrive.

When a copy of first edition popped up for sale at a reasonable price, I decided to buy it even with a little bit of bitterness of pledged money lost. I first tried to play this at an event in September, but I had not understood the rules well enough, and the group wasn't in the mood to learn it on the fly given the (lack of) clarity of the rulebooks, so we boxed it up. I finally got it to the table this weekend.

The game that got me into modern boardgames back in 1997 or thereabouts was RoboRally. Quodd Heroes is clearly close kin with RoboRally, with a quite different puzzle/geometric reasoning game layered on top of moving your really cute figure around a square grid board with barriers, terrain that moves you and rotates you, and opponents to push around while you race to rally points and other resources. But, the core mechanic ("roll" your cube from one face to the next and activate the special ability of the face up face of the cube) is delightfully puzzly and fresh.

We played through the first two parts of the "tutorial" which sort of acts as a single game and it's definitely fun and I'm looking forward to more. We'll see over time where it sits in the pantheon that contains RoboRally and Mechs vs Minions. I suspect it's not rising to the top of that group but it's certainly not a disappointment, and I had high hopes.

I'm glad I got my last remaining(?) "grail" game.

Nick Fury Sr and Maria Hill beat the Skrulls. Nick Fury Sr feels like a good "leader" hero with cards that give other players actions. The Skrulls feel like interesting villains in that there's clearly a layering of problems with the Threat cards you have to tackle in order to progress to the endgame. Overall fun, but definitely on the easier side.

Another game where you can't "lose", you can only get fewer points. But, we played with all expansions and got 77 points, above the highest threshold, so it's a win.

There's something about the aesthetic of this game that I would think I wouldn't like but I tend to delight in the final map.
