OK everyone. Last night I dreamed I found a pile of Heroscape land, Dominion Seaside, Dominion Intrigue, and a whole mess of Killer Bunnies.

If anyone finds any of the above mentioned today, you're welcome :p

Also, in my dream I remember mentioning to myself: "Someone on the thrift list wanted Killer Bunnies I thought. Who was that?" So tell me... who wanted Killer Bunnies again? Or at least to find it? I swear there's someone here...

To check out what Japanese games were available/being released at the Game Market, you can go to this link, and even though everything's in Japanese, there are a lot of pictures of the games. It's in a blog format, and the vendors posted up information about their games there. I just found The Manhattan Project to be another very average worker placement game, much like Lords of Waterdeep. There is nothing the matter with either of them, they are just not very exciting.

Isn't Ora Et Labora exactly just yet another worker placement game? Agricola rehash #3 with minimal interaction and a mess of special ability cards - it sure as hell looks like it - and straight on my never-to-play list. While Manhattan Project has several innovative mechnanisms such as the async worker placement and withdrawal, and espionage usage and blocking of opponents' buildings, and even bombing of opponents.

Neat theme - I'd have a look at Survive: Escape from Atlantis! and Lifeboats.

I like your reflection on the metagame too many designers fail to anticipate how social aspects of the game will impact upon the experience. Keeping an eye on this and reflecting on what is and is not allowed is a credit to any design! Nothing worse than two players allying and the rules not being clear on whether this is allowed. Some high quality design reflection - take a meeple :meeple:

The trading aspect sound like a key element of the game. Do you know what cards your opponents have or is this secret information. My point is that I won't trade with someone if I know they will make it to the water first.

Looks like a very exciting game but I want to know more! :)

i) I'd like to know more about who you are escaping from.
ii) What resources are there - how do you gather them?
iii) Can you tackle the frustration you mention or do you want it as part of the design?
iv) Can you come up with a cooperative variant?

I love your title and your introductory paragraph. 'Expansion' is really clever as I am left wonder who's expansion you are talking about - the 'animals' or the humans or both. Good stuff :)

Overall your opening paragraph appears simple but is actually very deep perfectly describing the history of humankind - our success has been at the cost of other species and the impoverishment of the ecology of this plant named earth.

I like the use of area control mechanic in your design. It's abstract and therefore easy to play but it offers a deep meaning and a simple representation of the survival of the fittest. There is a game called Dominant Species that is somewhat similar in that animals are competing for survival. The problem with it is it takes 4 hours to play!!! - I'd much rather play a design like yours that is streamlined and hopefully plays quicker.

Balancing the tactical choices of attack and defence is always interesting. I want to know more about my options.

Returning to your theme, I love that it's come from a good bit of critical thinking about human beings and our effect on the (not our) environment. You make a sagely point about our lack of reflection on what our actions do to the other animals we share the earth with. Really good work - this is the sort of game born out of thought that certain charities might like to stock on their website.

This said there is a further reflection that we all most take in that by creating(producing) and buying games we are cutting down trees and encouraging new expansions, explorations and extinctions. It's hard to survive(fit) in a technological age where so much of our everyday life is based on inequality and exploitation of the earth and all things that dwell on it. :what:

i) How do you stop players from literally 'turtling'?
ii) How does movement/conflict work?
iii) How do you record who owns which square?

A good name, using alliteration is always welcome with me and it perfectly reflects the theme and the overall experience. Good Work! :)

As for the design - Bravo! It sounds like one of these designs that's ready to ship.

When I saw this it made me think about Through the Desert - a design by one the most famous successful designers: Reiner Knizia. Coming up with a comparable design just shows how much you have achieved!

Any theme about zoology is right up my street. I love the natural world but too often take it for granted. A game were you get to control and play through one natures ongoing conflicts is really exciting and hopefully immersive. Including other elements of the food-chain is a great decision - again I'd buy this tomorrow. It's also nice to see a pick-up-and-deliver game that is unique and not based on trains :snore:.

i) When will this be published?
ii) Who is your target market?
iii) How many players will it support - if I am playing with less will the amount of bees or honey change?
iv) I want to know more of the nitty gritty - what does a players turn look like, how many action points do they have, etc.

Great first game, I had a blast (not only from the flamethrower).
My reinforcements entered game at the 4th turn (scenario ends at 6th) and I killed his defender unit in close combat after entering the building on the 5th turn.

But I think that I won the game with a (very) lucky die roll of my last unit standing at the second building. I got snake eyes and so, even when the unit was killed, a lonely sargeant was created, that continued the melee another turn, so Antonio had to remain in battle there, and ran out of time.

Ready for another go when you are.

Brilliant idea!:) If your game was just about healthy eating - It might be off putting as it might seem unreal or preachy. Reflecting on happiness and perhaps the reality that every now and then a jam scone or deep fried mars bar(hershey) will make you happy is a great approach.

I always like designs that are based on everyday life as I can relate and they often require more difficult design decisions.

I love bidding games and yours sounds fun. On top of this it has a clear educational angle - which I am all in favour with then pared with good mechanics.

In my work there is a researcher currently working on a project looking at healthy eating and traditional foods with children from the arctic circle. Part of her project is a commitment to teach the children to eat healthily - for which she has been designing a game. Next time I see her I'll point out your words:

if an unhealthy person plays this game they cannot win by what they are doing in real life

I think this is brilliantly said.

i) What are players bidding with? How do they get more X to bid with?
ii) Which sport is it you take part in the most?
iii) Who is the target market for your game?

Yeah I'd suspect that's a big part of it. Almost every math trade I've participated in over the years has had roughly 40% of the entries happen in the final 1-2 days.

A good name - I like how you have cleverly changed a well known term to suit your game. It caused me to double take and got more interested in your game than even cover art would have.

As a licensed PADI diver I'm instantly interested in your game. When diving off greek Islands I've often found pottery - which you are required by law to leave under the sea!

Your decision to give everyone a player aid is very welcome and a great choice. How I wish every publisher would do the same! :whistle:

The oxygen system is thematic and interesting - sort of a push your luck element.

what's the ocean without some sharks?

Just a lot of boring water innit ;). I love your use of predators - I wonder if you might have some positive interaction with other sealife? What I really like about your game is the theme of exploring the wonders of the deep.

i) Is there any way to find oxygen in the deep? Could i find an air-pocket that would let me stay down longer?
ii) How is a winner picked? Is there player elimination?
iii) When does the game end?
iv) You've alluded to people being difficult and not trading - is there anyway to tackle this with your mechanics?

Bees do not collect honey from flowers. Nothing does - flowers do not contain honey. Bees collect nectar which is turned into honey by repeated ingestion and regurgitation and then evaporation of the water.

I would have to consider each purchase in a case-by-case basis. I generally won't support a rip-off. But then again, I imagine if the original is OOP, and has been for years, and its prices are ridiculously high, then I would definitely be tempted by the copy edition.

Great game name - linking your game both to combat and the historical period. Though I wouldn't want a Gladius due to how short they are - I'd want to keep as far away as possible - yup Im a scary cat. ;)

Your first paragraph is brilliant - already I can imagine queues forming in shops to get this game! I really like that while some will see your game as a simple combat game - there are multiple paths to fame and thus victory. This reminds me of Imperial a game that looks like a war-game but if played as such you will use because it is in fact an economic game. In a similar way if in Gladius if I ignore getting people(plebs) into my colosseum I will likely lose in the longrun.

When I read this at first I was worried there would be a runaway leader but I see you are aware and have addressed this by barring winners from participating in the next round.

The gambling on the fight is neat because it tackles downtime and keeps everyone interested. Who doesn't love gladiators? - Um Spartacus ;)

i) How does gambling work? What if a strong player is fighting a weak player?
ii) Can players overcome the luck of the die?
iii) How long will your game take to play?

I like the use of alliteration in the title.

Really thematic and elegant use of the victory point chart - bravo! I wish other racing games would use this system - great bit of thinking! :)

Again your advertising and building cars mechanics are both thematically consistent and elegant. I agree that there are few racing games - but what really puts me off the genre is how luck based/ameritrash they tend to be - your system is unique because it puts euro mechanics/mechanics that gave users more control at the core of the game.

i) How do I get strategy cards - you mention they have variable costs - is this money or action points?
ii) How balanced is it in practice - are there runaway leaders?
iii) Does the player who goes first have an advantage? Can you tackle this?

This is a really unique design - mixing a dexterity element, getting to build house - which does appeal to all ages ;) and more traditional mechanics really appeals to me. Good concessive design where theme and mechanic match up well - I particularly like the scoring of victory points - great stuff!

Questions:
i) How replayable is it? Will resources be randomised or will they all be the same?
ii) How many players can play and what is your target market?
iii) Can you come up with an cooprative variant?

PS: check out Master Builder a game that also involves constructing 3d buildings - demonstrating your design was a marketable idea! :)
Master builder didn't do so well as it was - too complicated for families and too simple for adult gamers - I think your design is better targeted.

Yeah, tough game... congrats on your comeback!

after seeing how the end game works out you'd think that long-term strategy is the most important thing, because the final turn trumps everything else you did the entire time.

But because of the massive power of the domination cards and constantly changing seeded element token things, any long term plan is very challenging to maintain, and adaptation and tactical play become very important.

Seems like you can have a strategy or goal, but you have to fight tooth and claw with your neighbors to be able to have your way, and be prepared to evolve your approach if need be. I guess the game is more thematic than it looks afterall...

A good game I thought... I'm usually clear on tactics in this game, but long term strategy is still really confusing. No idea what's optimal; I've seen really different things all work.

Today I thought I was in a hopeless situation around the third or fourth turn and just tried to focus on doing the essential things to score a few points and not end up in last place. Somehow that turned into a win... *shrug.*

WOW! They just released a picture of what the cards might look like with the graphics. I thought the original white cards were going to be it but still backed it because I like the theme and idea of this game. But with these new cards WoW!

You can have a look at the cards on Update 10 to see what they might look like. Definitely glad I backed it.

Ama as Mammals (wins all ties for scoring purposes)
Stephen as Birds (extra movement during migration action)
Andre as Arachnids (1 Bonus kill per turn)
Kweku as Insects (1 Bonus species placement per turn)

Andre won with 170 points. Ama had 160 while Stephen and me had something like 140 and 130 respectively.

Total reversal from the first half of the game, where the scoring looked the opposite for most of the time. By late game it was obvious that Andre had the best board positioning though.

I really flubbed up two of my turns because I kept forgetting how the wasteland stuff worked, and elements that I was depending on for Speciation (unit summoning) were removed. Wasted two action selections in two subsequent turns where I thought I'd be getting fresh recruits but didn't, so then I started getting clobbered by Stephen :(

Took about 3 h 15 minutes

This bothers me the most, looking around, reading a bunch of listings, only to find the perfect description at a price that is right and find out the user hadn't logged in for 3 years... it really makes the marketplace something I no longer go to because of. It happens more times than people might think.

An easy solution would be for all marketplaces items over 90 days old to get a geek mail sent to the user giving them 3 days to click a link and 'renew' the listing for another 90 days... Something along those lines.

If the user doesn't log in and doesn't click the link, the item is removed.
