Thread: Games Club of Maryland:: General:: EuroQuest 2009

by John Weber

I haven't been posting much on this guild forum, but with the start of EuroQuest just a week away, I should add that the last piece of the puzzle is the naming of this year's Hot New Essen game -- which is Endeavor. The announcement was delayed a bit because there were many games that did equally well in many of the Essen polls and it was tough to sort them out, particularly when considering which would be available in English editions. Tom McCorry, our Essen guru, has informed me that he will have many of the new Essen games on hand at EQ again this year -- also Zev of Z-Man Games expects to have a demo copy of Dungeon Lords available although the game will not be available in the US for sale for another month or so.

Anyway, the website for all things EuroQuest remains:

http://euroquest.gamesclubofmd.org

Hoping for a big turnout this year.

Thread: Games Club of Maryland:: General:: SESSION REPORT from COG, A Gamer’s Notes

by capt yid

Had photos/images and notes from the Congress of Gamers in Rockville, MD on Saturday Sept 29, 2009 (from 10 to 7:30) so I thought I would combine them and post them here. The Rockville Community Center is the perfect size but the main social hall is kind of noisy.

As one of my two big gaming events every year (the other is going for a week in
early August to WBC in Lancaster with my gaming-buddy Bill) it
is like old home week seeing all these friendly and
interesting people. It has gotten so that I know at
least a few dozen of them. Previous years, I saw COG
as an opportunity to learn new games; many use it as
an opportunity to play games that are better with many players.

First, I arranged with David Kuijt (an excellent craftsman) to
attach a few parts on a couple of my hard-to-assemble miniatures.
Then, I turned in a game to the “no-ship math trade”.
Weeks before there are hundreds of games posted on a list
by people who want to trade them. Later, you submit a list of
those games that you are willing to trade your games yours for.
A special computer program then matches and optimizes all the trades.
In a Math trade, A may give to B, who gives to C, who gives to A.
You may get no matches. I was lucky to end up with "Cowboys: Way of
the Gun", which recreates Westerns. There were 42 game trades that day; best thing is no shipping costs!
Here is a photo of the one who ended up with my game instructing a newbie in Memoir; can you guess which is which? (Math trade window can be seen in the background)

While waiting for a noon “HOTT” game, I visited the lobby to finally learn
how to play Go. The Go “ambassador” (Todd Heidenreich) was an enthralling teacher full of oriental gaming lore. A couple of games of “First Capture” Go (on 9x9 small board) really made it understandable. Meanwhile, I learned of “Ataris”, the importance of “board resonance”, liberties, stones made of clam-shell/slate, Chinese chess, etc. From BGG:

At 12:00 came my first real Hordes of the Things (HOTT) game. This was the unveiling and first trial run of the 28mm miniature “Gothic Air Force” army that I had been designing, building, and painting for months. It is based on the first Gothic cathedral, St. Denis, in Paris. It includes gargoyles, fighting monks, and even angels on “flying buttresses”. The dice tower that I made has light-up stain glass windows. Later, these “purple” and dark Gothic figures will square off against “yellow” and
light Egyptians on an “architectural” chess set. The pawns are mummies vs.
gargoyles. Although I knew most of the rules, the variety off types of pieces
taught me much and I lost by a close 12-10.

The main event of the day (for me) was the De Bellis Antiquitatis (DBA) tournament from 1 to 6:30. Being a DBA novice, I only won 1 of my 4 games; but at least they were close losses. By default (I think) I won the newcomer prize (everyone else were old pros). It was very informative to gradually learn how to “command” my slow but sure Marian Romans against armies with more cavalry.

Interesting to hear my fellow architect’s (Kevin McPartland) description of their 2nd year entering into the impromptu 5 hour game design “competition” (Iron Designer Challenge). From a kit of parts and a random theme the teams of two each present their idea for a game during a conference on Sunday; like an architectural design charrette.
Here he is from last year’s game design contest:

In the Bring and Buy, I picked up a used copy of Pompeii. Kaarin really
wants to play me in a game of it soon (you drop opponents into the volcano). She flew back to her home in GERMANY on Monday after a busy weekend running the 2-day gaming conference. (Hope she feels free to use any of these photos/notes on the COG website.) Here is the B&B:

While waiting to get picked up, I watched her and about 10 others play a
stock car racing game w/cars on a section of track, “(McGartlin) Stock Car
Championship Racing”. Can you find Kaarin getting ready to race here?

A tiring but thrilling day….. Too bad I couldn’t stay for that
evening’s round of DBA games based on the Nile:
Various Egyptian armies and their attackers.

+++

I've created a meetup white board Geeklist at:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/47401

Use it to create some scheduled games if you hate (like me) "winging it" to find opponents.
