the production value is pretty high. still feels like it would be a lot better with minis instead of cubes for the invaders/soldiers.

valleygames will have a few copies to sell at the con. should be $75ish, and i doubt they have to charge tax.

Beth was Van Helsing to my Dracula but could not prevent the slaking of my blood lust on five female victims. She came close - she had found four of my coffins - but the Count had it in him when it counted.

We then journeyed back to a Germany long ago and fought to establish chains of postal offices - sounds exciting, no? I forced the conclusion of the game by using the Cartwright to gain my Seventh Carriage and won easily.

Winning a game of Ingenious against Beth and Alan will be a gaming memory I will cherish for years to come, somewhat akin to besting Michael Ward, Darryl and Stephen G. in Goa a few years ago.

Gotta run - trying to learn Riichi Mahjong these days.

Michael

Our Fire & Axe outing was a mediocre effort on my part, as I came in last behing Andy and Jen respectively. Jen joined us rather reluctantly, as she prefers shorter games, but acquiesed after Andy and I succeeded in strapping her to the chair. The game was played at almost light speed, not because we were under any time pressure, but because Andy and Jen are so intelligent, and mostly had their moves figured out in their heads way before they executed them. I generally don't like to play with people who are so super-smart that they don't need to go through the motions of moving bits around, but I've played F&A so many times that I could follow what they were doing in my own head :p and so had no issue with this last night. Jen was raiding and snapping up village points faster than you could say 'Ragnar Rocks', partly because Andy and I chose to pursue other avenues of conquest, and partly because she really didn't care if her poor Viking dudes bit it or not. :gulp: In the event, success favors the bold, as they say, and she did indeed succeed more times than not in her raiding rolls, even against the tough larger cities. Needless to say, she was awarded the 'bloodied axe' bonus at game end for doing the most raiding. Andy was able to snag most of the Saga cards , earning him a whopping 70 pts. for majorities at game end. I did quite a bit of settling, but those points weren't enough to push me above last place.

My next game of F&A, I will strap Duff to the chair, and maybe then I will have a chance of winning! :shake:

(postscript: Andy and I played a quick game of Mr.K's Dracula (2-player) afterward. Andy succeeded (as Dr. Van Helsing) in driving a stake through my (Drac's) heart when he found my two remaining coffins in my hand of encounter cards).

So that's where you went Joe! We wondered why you skedaddled so soon.

The evening was notable not only because I have to confront the picture of my bald spot above (yeck!) but also because I played 3 of the 4 games I brought yesterday, which must be a record.

I had all the right cards (Silver Mines mostly) in San Juan and whipped up on Jim. Then he and I played the 1861 scenario of the classic game A House Divided and my Southerners whipped up on his Union boys again - in which my troops rolled the hottest dice imaginable in battle, stomping a Union attack in Ohio I believe, leading to the fall of nearly all Ohio which along with a cavalry raid in Indiania did the trick. Beth, Michael, and myself then played Ingenious, in which a rule was clarified and Michael took top honors.

GG all! Wish I could have played Arkham, but at least I got to watch a little while. Kind of surprised the Friedlander's didn't show up.

Edit to mention that Joe and I plan to play ASL next week. ASL baby! My first time. Do I get a movie? lol

Here are some pictures of the SAG gaming at Borders last night. People will have to come along and fill it what happened in their games.

John, Evan, Celeste and Duff are seen here getting ready to play Arkham Horror. Michael is standing in the background.

Alan R. and Jim opened the night with a game of San Juan.

Stephen has set up Fire and Axe and Andy and Jen have joined him for it. Beth is standing. She joined Michael for her favorite game, Acquire.

I was present with Naomi, Deb and Daniel. Jean, Hannah and Ruth were supposed to join us for a game. But the additional family joining us showed up at our house, so I headed home. Alan B., me, Jean, Hannah, Naomi and Deb played a game of Battlestar Galactica with the Pegasus expansion.

I was Admiral Adama and I remained a human despite the 4 loyalty cards I was given, but my dierolling was so bad and the cards I pulled from the destination deck were so bad that I did little to help the humans. Deb as Kat saved us from an early loss by using her once-a-game ability to eliminate the Cylon boarding party that only had to move one more space to end the game. Alan was a Cylon leader and Jean (Ellen Tigh) and Hannah (Duala) turned out to be the Cylons. The humans made 4 jumps, but still needed 2 more, and went down in a flurry of Cylon basestars and raiders.

Joe

We're giving it another shot on Wednesday, I think. Got caught up at the flooring place Thursday night. =[

We should get together at my house and play something. The Duff and Mr.K have fallen down on the job of late - Duff had surgery recently, however, so he can't get around the cafe like he used to. He also says that no one thumbs his pics, so why do it? (truth be told, however, it's been sort of nice not to have the Duff always jumping up in the middle of a game to take some silly pic of somebody's ding-dong) :surprise: (game) :D Mr.K's excuse is simply that he is back in the classroom. Give them some time (like until the beginning of next summer), then they'll be back in full swing! :D

Hey Brett,

I am quite envious. I too want to get my hands on that game. Who is your mysterious benefactor?

I agree that it will probably go for at least 3-4 hours (don't all the best games?), which actually may seem quite moderate to anyone that frequently plays 18xx. :D

Also I am only too glad that I was able to secure a copy of Antiquity when it was only $102 since it now seems to be going for quite lofty sums in the secondary market.

I think Latin Americans are generally psychologically healthier than N. Americans, for whatever reason. My own opinion is that they have a healthier and more realistic attitude toward their physicality (bodies) and a more optimistic view of life in general. The climate may also play a role.

She has been hugely popular in Latin America for many years. She exploded into N. America several years ago with her English language album 'Laundry Service', and is more of an international star these days. Shakira has her roots in hard rock, plays the guitar, is far more genuine, and is light-years more talented than Britney. Thus, one could in all honesty say that Britney is really a 'Shakira wannabe'.

Which is strange considering it is Duff we're talking about. ;)

P.S. Thanks for the avatar - guess I need to work on finding one that fits the size!

P.P.S. Joe Keller and I slugged it out with Tiger Tanks in the MM44 scenario, SAINT-AIGNAN DE CRAMESNIL back in time on on August 8th, 1944. This is where the infamous German tank ace, Michael Whittman, tangled with some mean and revengeful Canadians and met his forthcoming fate!!! We both scored a win playing the Germans. The hapless Canadians could only destroy three of the six Tiger Tanks on the map. .... here are some pix of the tank melee...

Go sick 'em, Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/size]

by Gamegrunt

It was my pleasure to game with some of the young and the restless that haunt our little group. I started out with a quick game of Ploy, a classic, a member of the great collection of 3M Bookcase Games of the early Sixties.

It's always nice when a newbie pulls off the upset, and owing to my letting my guard down (not seeing to the security of my Commander), Rod was able to penetrate my defenses and put a "checkmate" on the one piece in a Ploy-fest that cannot be lost.
Way to go, Rod!

A four player Endeavor ensued with Naomi, Art, Andy and I matching wits in a struggle of European imperialists in a struggle to dominate the world. Jen looked on and assisted Naomi.

I left my wits at home.

My achievement in this game was to avoid being alone in last place (I shared that honor with Naomi) and preventing the abolishment of slavery - wow, no Nobel Peace Prize for me this year! Art won, while Andy took 2nd place.

We played a couple of games of Pack & Stack. I found this game to be fun the last time I played it and not so much this time around. It's too random and definitely favors the young and nimble mind. I recall winning a five minute game of chess against the club champion of the East Detroit Chess Club back in the early Seventies...only in a game of this length would I ever stand a chance against that fifty-something player.

We played "The Bean Game" - Bohnhanza aka Bean Trader. I like this game; I own it, and it's fun to play. A very close game this time: 16-15-14-13 were the scores. We also played Quixo a couple of times and finished off the evening with Apples to Apples. Andy won this one and I came in second.

Some of us retired to B.J's after the meeting and enjoyed some fine food and drink - thanks for the pizza, Alan!

Michael
Jim's Empire of Nippon surrendered in what would have been late 1944, if we'd played it out to the bitter end. Quite a satisfying game, for both of us - Jim's CAP variant didn't completely destroy the balance as I thought it might. And this concludes our latest round of Axis & Allies: Pacific. Upward and onward, into the sunrise.

Dr. Abraham Van Helsing (Evan), Dr. Seward (Jon), Lord Godalming (Adam), and Mme. Mina Harker (Celeste) served as my unwary guests at Castle Dracula. They chased me around Eastern and Western Europe and finally succeeded in cornering me in Salonica. To add to my woes, Dracula had inadvertently remained hidden for one turn when he should have revealed himself, when Dr. Seward (Jon) arrived in my location. As a result, I had to suffer the penalty of losing blood down to my next red blood cell level, and also reveal my current location. This made it easy for the hunters to surround and combat Drac, as each took their turn fighting him in succession. In the event, it was a bit too much for the old boy to handle, and he finally succumbed to their combined efforts. :soblue:

With an hour of the evening remaining, I taught Evan how to play my two-player Battlefields of Olympus.
by Gamegrunt

A good time was had by all at Borders - about 10 of us at three tables.

Jim and Alan continued their exploration of Axis & Allies: Pacific. Stephen and his bunch spent an evening playing Fury of Dracula.

But Jen, Andy and I had the most fun playing three different games starting with one of the newer offerings from Reiner Knizia:

FITS

Tetris the Board Game finally becomes a reality and it just as much fun as its computer cousin. With four different rounds of play, and quick play at that, this is a very nice filler...Andy seems to have a nose for very nice fillers. He won our game, Jen 2nd, me last.

Then came the main course:

Endeavor

Beautiful game, easy to learn, interesting decisions, plays in an hour...whatever could one ask for? Getting the cards and the governorships are important, and I did neither very well, but it was time well spent nonetheless. I surprised Gassett hasn't latched onto this one yet.

Finally, Rudiger Dorn's Arkadia.

I came close, but Andy won this one by the slim margin of a few gold pieces with Jen close behind.

That was it from where I sat.

Michael

by P47 Thunderbolt

	Hi all,

I hope a fun time was had by all at Borders last night.

Some of us gathered at the Keller home, because we wanted to be able to play Starcraft on a big table and be able to play past 10 p.m. Our game of Starcraft went from 7 p.m. till midnight.

(These pictures are borrowed from BGG and are not actual pictures of our game.)

This was my second game of Starcraft and I decided to play the Purple Zerg this time. Alan (the most experienced player) played the Yellow Protoss. Hannah for her first game took the Red Terrans and Naomi for her second game took the Blue Terrans (same as she had in her first game).

The 8 planets were roughly set up in a 3 by 3 grid. The Zerg started on the far right on the middle planet. The Protoss on the far left on the middle planet. The Red Terrans on the bottom left planet and the Blue Terrans on the top center planet.

As the Zerg I was able to multiply rapidly and also grab the planet at the center of the setup.

(This picture is similar to the situation, but I had a lot more purple units.)

An event card allowed me to place 2 Zerglings on the upper left planet and now I had control of many resources and 3 Command Points (CPs). This gave me an early lead in the game. We were not playing the Special Victory Conditions, so everyone was racing for 15 CPs.

Alan's Yellow Protoss did not start on a planet with a CP, and he went on the attack on the first turn and landed on Hannah's left bottom planet, right on her Red Terran base, and took the planet to get the valuable 2 CP objective. Hannah retreated to the planet at the bottom center of the play area. From there she attacked my center planet. Early battles sent her back, but her continued pressure gained a foothold.

For a while Naomi avoided combat. She developed the top center planet and took the top right planet. This gave her resources, but she and Hannah were only collecting 1 CP per turn.

Alan and I were leaping ahead in the CPs, and I was farthest ahead with a 4 CP lead. This led to more and more players coming after me, until everyone was attacking me. Hannah and Naomi's Red and Blue Terrans both got a foothold on my center planet. Near the end of the game the Red Terrans took my CP and destroyed my base.

At the same time, Alan's Protoss sent 2 carriers to my upper left world. They destroyed my Ultralisk and Mutalisk and then took the CP and destroyed my base.

(This picture shows 2 yellow Protoss carriers on the left, but the units on the right do not reflect my purple Zerg units.)

At this point it was looking bad for the Zerg. My vast empire had evaporated. In a couple more turns they could exterminate all the bugs if they wanted to. But I had held on just long enough. At the end of that turn all 3 "End is Near" cards came up, ending the game. I had squeaked out a victory with 13 CPs. Alan had 12. Hannah and Naomi each had about 8. Everyone commented that they had really enjoyed it.

There were also a number of games of Mahjong and Settlers of Catan that were played. Rebekah and Ellen won 2 hands of Mahjong playing as a team, Jean won 2, Anna won 1 and Hans won 1. Jean also won the game of Settlers.

Joe
