In the past, we've received no warning about these tournaments at all, so I'm thrilled to know so far ahead of time. :)

Well that stinks.. thanks for posting this or I would have definitely shown up.

With it being Halloween the next Saturday, I might not be able to make until the 7th.

Yep, that would be why there's no event for it on the calendar. I've got a Halloween gaming party to attend that day or I would have tried to set something up at an alternate venue like China Buffet.

As you might expect, this is more often a case with the youngest in our group, but that’s not always the case.

BubbaMcFlubba wrote:
I can understand how the start time is important.. it would not be cool to show up at 1 sharp and noone be there.

Yeah, I’m sorry to wander off topic like that since I certainly don’t want to dissuade new players. Sounds great! I like all kinds of games as long as one can have at least a modicum of effect on the outcome.. pure chance games are totally not my bag. So I will play pretty much anything you guys have. Although, I have done a little reading on the "Shadows over Camelot" game and it seems like it would be fun, but I have never played it.

As for my twelve year old, who is actually a she, I asked mainly due to the color commentary and not so much the playing aspect.. so I appreciate the honest feedback. I will probably not bring her at least until I get a feel for it.

I can understand how the start time is important.. it would not be cool to show up at 1 sharp and noone be there.

I will try to make it Saturday.. if not then the next one for sure. I am probably looking to be a once a month type member. My twelve year old is actually the oldest of 3 (12, 10, and 8) and I am looking to sort of make the transition from games with just the family to a club.

Thanks again.

by Trump

Scott's covered just about everything, but I'll chime in to reinforce a point or two if nothing else.

Don't worry about rules. Rarely do we sit down and I don't have to teach the game to at least one person. It's no biggie.

As Scott said, you'll likely play different kinds of games on the two nights, although this isn't always the case. In the past, the Friday meeting has been iffy, but Kerry's been trying to get a little life in it again so I'd guess you can count on something going down. Saturday is almost always a certainty, barring a massive CCG tournament or everyone having other things to do that day (as happened once recently).

When do you come? Hmmm. It seems like a good many people show up fashionable late and if that's what works best for you, then fine. I see two problems with this though. One is that you're going to have to sit around until a game ends. No big deal for many. You just have to know it'll happen. The other problem doesn't deal with you personally, but I've seen a trend with more people showing up later. Early birds like me start showing up later too since I don't expect anything to be going on for a while. And then just last week we have two people who come infrequently show up on time and wonder where the gamers are. They left. Luckily, they came back later in the day, but that doesn't make a very good impression on new people, does it? As far as you're concerned, I'm just saying that if you don't see any boardgames whenever you come by, it doesn't mean there won't be any. Well, okay, if you come up there three hours after start time and there's still nothing... :) The issue of the eroding start time is really a big picture topic for the whole group to sort out.

Kid-friendly? Well, he won't be banned from games just because of his age and if we can handle whatever hits the table, then bring him on. Heck, I'm twice as old as some of the people I'm playing with. :) We DO have members who can get a bit... bawdy... with their comments at times though.

So which games have you played and enjoyed? Do you know of any you'd like to try out? We might be able to direct you to who and when that'd most likely happen. Some of us (like me!) have their collections set up here on BGG so you can easily browse whatever we own and make requests if you like. I always have a hard time deciding what to take up to gaming.

by Speedracer513

	Hey Brian,

Welcome, and we hope to see you there in the near future. (By there, I am assuming you mean 3rd Coast Cards at the corner of Westgreen and Kingsland in Katy... we used to rotate the venue week-by-week, but we now have enough of a contingent in Katy that we just plan on 3rd Coast every Saturday)...

No need to learn any of the games on your own before showing up. We are almost always teaching to at least one person, and no one in the group has a problem with sitting through a quick rules explanation again. We have some standby games that get played fairly often, but there is also a bit of 'cult of the new'ness in our group, so we are constantly bringing new games in to the rotation that most people haven't played before.

Fridays usually are a smaller group of people, and in general there is a slight leaning toward ameritrash type of games (like Doom, Descent, and other Fantasy Flight games). I think people usually show up between 6:00-7:00 on Friday nights and some of us are willing to stay till closing (2:00am!).

Saturdays are a bit more reliable as far as number of people and timing. There are usually enough people there by 2:00pm (sometimes earlier) and lately we have had enough people for at least two full games going at the same time. We play more Euros on Saturdays (things like Stone Age, Endeavor, Dominion, Small World, etc.), with quick fillers if needed to try and finish at the same time as the other table so people can regroup and decide what to play next. People come and go at various times, so no worries about coming late/leaving early. People start to thin out after dinnertime on Saturday, but there is almost always at least 4-5 of us that stay till between midnight and 2:00am.

As far as kid-friendliness... 3rd Coast Cards is mostly a CCG venue that has an owner that is just-cool-enough to let us take up a few tables. There is usually a moderate-sized swarm of kids aged 10-20 playing Magic and other CCGs.

I'm assuming you're asking more about 12-yr-old-friendliness-with-the-board-gamers though, so: I guess it depends on your 12-yr-old. We have two high-school aged guys that play with us on a regular basis. And I don't know of anyone in the group that has a problem with younger kids. It's probably more up to you, and how you think your 12-yr-old will (a) behave, and (b) enjoy himself (or herself) playing with some older guys. If you think he can handle himself and have fun, then I don't think there would be any problem with bringing him.

My suggestion is to bring him (or her) on Saturday afternoon for a couple hours - play a game or two that you are both interested in, and then go from there.

Sorry for the overly-comprehensive response... Feel free to ask more questions and I'm sure we can answer them...

Hi everyone. New guy here. I have a couple of quick questions that I was hoping someone had the time and inclination to answer.

I love games and I am a geek so I feel right at home here. However, I have not played most of the games everyone is playing here. Should I learn them on my own before showing up, or are you guys tolerant of new guys who have literally never played the game?

I noticed on the calendar that you have scheduled events on Fridays and Saturdays. Which is the better day to come? Is it okay to come late?

Is the environment kid friendly at all? Perhaps for a 12 year old?

Thanks.

I don't usually think much of their awards, but I think they did a pretty good job this year.

Philippe Keyaerts’ Small World, published by Days of Wonder, has been named the 2010 Game of the Year by Games Magazine. Small World, released in April 2009, is a new version of Keyaerts’ Vinci with players controlling fantasy races and trying to claim and hold territory on the gameboard. (For more details on the game play, read my review.) The other category winners in The Games 100 are:

* Best Advanced Strategy Game – Le Havre, by Uwe Rosenberg
* Best Abstract Strategy Game – Blox, by Wolfgang Kramer, Hans Raggan and Jürgen Grunau
* Best Family Game – Roll Through the Ages, by Matt Leacock
* Best Family Strategy Game – Dominion / Dominion: Intrigue, by Donald X. Vaccarino
* Best Family Card Game – Amerigo, by Din Li
* Best Party Game – Dixit, by Jean-Louis Roubira
* Best Historical Simulation – Fields of Fire, by Ben Hull
