It may be relegated to an off-air column or blurb, since I like the pyramids much more than John (they are a polarizing thing, it seems).

With [thing=31563]Middle-Earth Quest[/thing] on deck for the next episode, we'll be getting back to the meatier stuff. :)

Great - I was afraid that you perhaps never played Zendo (*glances sideways*) or even worse that you don't like it (*shivers*).

On a more serious note - Zendo is a game to love or hate. If logical deduction isn't your cup of tea, then the security distance is 20 meters or more.

A talk with Looney Labs and not a single (or did I miss it?) mention of Zendo. I could have spent a whole show discussing Zendo. You had the chance and you blew it.

Hope you make it up with a special Zendo show later :)

I actually started RPGing with a game created by a good family friend and local game store owner. My dad also played. It was a d30 based system years before d20. It was called High Elf Lords. Other than that i have played and/or GMed:
AD&D 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5, & a very little 4th
Rifts
Paranoia
Warhammer Fantasy RP
and Pathfinder

These are the only ones i can recall getting to play, but i have wanted to play sooo many more. 8^)

I just wanted to give a shout-out to my excellent co-host for really working to get this episode out with as little delay as possible. I was sick during our normal recording day, so we had to record much later than usual. John (who handles all of the audio aspects - thank him for the audio quality!) really pushed it to get this episode ASAP, so kudos to him!

I actually think you have managed to keep the numbers of buy fairly high. Which to me means that the three level grade system actually works fairly well, and I am an avid fan of that systme. More levels aren't better when grading - less is more!

I think there is merit to this idea. For example, when you were reviewing Le Havre, I was thinking to myself, "why would I want to buy this in addition to the Agricola that I already have? Is there something so unique about Le Havre that I wold want to get it also?" because it seems so similar. Perhaps some contrast with similar games would be helpful to the budget concious among us. Or knowing that a similar game has a unique twist is also helpful.

Hey guys I really enjoy the podcast. I am an avid listener of your show since episode 1. I also enjoy several other gaming podcasts, but your podcast seems to be the only one I download and listen to right after it is posted.

Over the past handful episodes it has occurred to me that you may have stumbled onto something that no other podcast is offering in terms of reviews...the Jones Theory. When I first heard your system of Buy, Try, or Deny I must admit I did groan. It seems that any list like this always comes out try since there are so many factors that go into purchasing a game. I want to throw out a suggestion and you can take it or leave it. What if your basis for buy, try, or deny was based on the Jones Theory? That would be a very useful rating for common gamers who do not have huge collections and are probably not going to be creating any large game collections. A common gamer could listen to your show and hear about a game and see if it is better than Game X in the same Jones category. In the podcasts I have listened to, there is not really anybody who comes out and says "buy this game and trade the other" or "this game is not better than _____, so try it out before buying."

If I have not made my point clearly, or you would like more clarifications, let me know. Keep up the great shows!

My first plays was D&D and then AD&D. But we mostly played Runequest in the early days. We only used the system and not much of the world apart from the cults. Later on we the played a lot of Call of Cthulhu. There was some James Bond in there as well. RQ, CoC and JB were the games that I (together with my brother) owned. There were some Traveller and very few Star Frontiers games at some time.

Thanks!

Both HEX and Savage Worlds are great choices for getting into RPGs (I haven't looked at Colonial Gothic enough yet, but it looks fun). Savage Worlds has a more mini-focused and brutual (!) combat system, while HEX's combat system is all about speed and advancing the story, if that's a determining factor.

There's a great one-shot adventure here: Hollow Earth Expedition Free RPG Day Adventure 2009 if you can find the players. Good luck!

EDIT: I just noted your location, Keith. Who's Yer Gamers often runs events every few months in Indy that regularly feature HEX games (heck, there's one on Saturday!). If you're up for the drive, that would be a good place to check it out.

I have to tell you that I have not ever really been into playing RPGs until I heard your podcast. I was and am a board game fan first. I guess I just was not a huge fan of the D&D world. Actually I guess I always felt like everyone knew more about the mythology of the world and that it was just too steep of a learning curve to tackle. Now that I have heard about the other roleplaying systems that are simpler and easier I have become obsessed with the idea of Hollow Earth, Savage Worlds, and (because I am a social studies teacher) Colonial Gothic. I have not found anyone to play with, but I have read parts of the book. I am intrigued to say the least thanks to the coverage in your show. Thanks!

For example, I was wondering how many of you currently or at one point did play in an RPG, and what system(s) you played or GMed. It is one of my top 5! It was just a good game until we tried making the one population (5 point cards) 2 population. This made for a much more interesting game. This way people can press their luck for a great special power. With just one population, it is really a luck of the draw, with two the game has gotten so much better. I would suggest you give it a try if have not already done so. I keep posting this variant in every mention of this game because I believe so strongly in the small change that opens up a whole new game! Keep up the great podcasts!

I.e if I look at it objectively High Society is the better game, so tense, so short, so elegant.

Zendo is probably the most fun a group can have, and you can drop in and out without affecting the game.

Space Alert is just so different from any other game experience, even if I need an expansion now.

Hare & Tortoise and Acquire are classics that never should be forgotten.

I agree with Jonathan, the unknown factor was quite fun. You should try guessing each other sometimes. The Spiel guys do this with the Spiel des Jahres awards, try and guess each others picks.
I liked how you did your top 11. Not knowing the other persons list led to nice irreverent responses, which matched your format nicely.

You didn't do anything to interest me further in Arcane Legions
I saw it shown at Origins, and for a minis game it doesn't seem to have any table appeal, and the mixed troop type units is a concept that I can't get past.

It's Battleground for me if I want tabletop minis on a budget, and a proper minis game if I want more.
