I wouldn't say hitching a mule to an automobile was 'thinking outside the box'.
If you really didn't want the automobile because it had these apparant 'flaws' IYO, you could stick to the mule and wagon...

I understand that there were people who hitched mule teams to the early automobiles because they did not like the noise that the engine made or paying something more than hay and oats for fuel.

Exactly my point, if you have something as crappy as the early automobile (noisy, expensive, and hardly ever ran correctly), sometimes you have to think outside of the box to make it better, and hope that someday the design will improve, like today’s automobiles.

This for the players who say the tower stinks. There are so many ways to boost the player who is losing without using the ultra random pop out of the tower ghost armies. Personally, I don’t think of the little cubes as actual units but as a representation of military strength, a combination of equipment, moral, desperation, skill, and men, etc. That way, the extra cubes are not extra units popping out of the tower but the same soldiers who have seen so much combat they are more skilled and have gathered extra equipment of the their fallen allies, a group of soldiers who are eager to avenge their losses and desperate to stay alive by winning at any cost. Pretty dramatic huh?

Your suggestions would totally ruin the balancing mechanism inherent in the tower. If you have one poor combat you are more likely to do better in the next. It makes the game somewhat less random actually.

by ryolacap

Here are some ways to defeat the tower's crazy magic......

Unload it after every battle and reload it with farmer cubes. I know you are not suppose to but it would remove the ability to reinforce you armies with zombies

Or

Count only the max of player cubes put in plus any supporting farmers. So if you put in a 4 vs 2 and 4 vs 5 plus a little greenie comes out, simply make it 4 vs 3 (2 starting cubes plus the farmer) result, attacker wins with 1 army left. The chances get better for a player getting gang banged by the other opponents but doesn't suddenly get a bunch of "reinforcements" you could see it as the soldiers he does have, are just fighting more desperately, so the chances of them winning increase.

Or

Roll dice (boooo) get a d10: 8, 9, 10 are hits, and if the defender gets a 10 and no unrest markers, he gets a farmer cube.

I am going to try the old Shogun (Samurai Swords) game combat and pieces at some point, the games could easily be combined. Be cool having 3 big armies moving around with generals gaining experience (which gives them the ability to make multiple moves and attacks) and different types of ranged and melee units.
Ok...

1 Koku = 3 spearmen = 2 swordmen or gunners = 1 bowmen

So...

3 cubes will buy 3 spearmen = 2 swordmen or gunners = 1 bowmen.

You dont even need the Samurai Swords pieces, you could mark your cubes and use the combat system.

This is just for people who said they wanted a war variant.

Also add... Samurai Swords fantastic combat system, is simplistically complex

Ranged attack first remove casualties
then melee attack and remove causalities.
All casualties are chosen buy owner.
Units hit as follows (d12/less than)
Spear = 4
Sword = 5
Gun = 4
Bow = 6
Yes, you must take the action unless you don't have money to pay for it. In your attack situation, what you do if you really don't want to attack, is just attack with one army. There is no negative affect on you if you lose, so worse thing that can happen is you put some of your opponent's armies in the tower of death...

I will have to wait to get the game...but if it is similar it would be a pretty cool variant.

Answer to first question bottom of page 11 under Player versus Player or Nuetral province. One farmer army added is correct. And 2nd question is answered top of page 12. One army per revolt marker plus what provision chart saids is to be added.

The Russnak is just trying to prove that we were playing illegaly when I won BOTH 5 player Shogun games we were in together. By showing we were not quite playing right, Russ can try to diminish my wins by saying they don't count cause we were not playing correctly. Tough Titties Rusnak. I am your Shogun Champion!! By the way for those who care, and most of you that could care less, I won the second game by putting my best income producing country on income even though in the last turn income was coming last and totally useless. Cept that I ended up in a tie for first, and the 7 treasure chests beat the guy I was tied with by two chests giving me sweet victory. And I screwed the above mentioned Russ by attacking a stronghold of his just for fun, and I won the battle in province that was producing Russnak's wheat! Russ had many revolts due to lack of food and it knocked him out of contention. Life in Shogun was good...

To add to what Randy said, there is a special event card that adds an extra green cube to the tower when attacking a neutral province, but he's right in that you normally only add one green cube normally.

Thanks for creating this variant. It makes for an interesting 2-player alternative..

However, one thing that is missing is some of the randomness of the battles. I think that there needs to be some dummy tokens added to the dice tower. How many I am not sure, 5 perhaps, that keep getting refed to the tower to keep it from filling up with just the two players and farmer's tokens.

Review: Shogun:: Reviews:: Bulletpoint review

by Lord_Kristof

This is the 11th installment in my ongoing series of short reviews. In this text I talk about a game without getting much into detail and I comment on what I think are the pro's and con's of a game. This won't teach you the rules, so the aim is rather to give you an additional opinion after you read some other reviews or read the rules.
For other "episodes" of my reviews, check this geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/42757

+ THEME
I love this aspect of Japanese history. The theme isn't particularly strong in this game, but the way it's made provokes your imagination. I especially like the player boards and the map itself.

+ TENSE
Because of the mechanism, you never know if your plans are going to work. It makes you set some priorities and prepare for different scenarios. You never know if a player is going to attack you, or build up his province to keep you from attacking - I have seen this "Cold War" kind of mechanism in works a couple of times. Attacking is a part of the strategy, but choosing you battles wisely is even more important.

+ SCALING AND VARIANTS
This game is one of the best scaling ones I ever played. It doesn't matter if you play with 3, 4 or 5 players - it's as much fun, and interestingly enough, each of these variants plays a bit differently. Plus, there's nothing in the game stopping you from playing a longer, three year game, if you feel the basic two years aren't enough.

+ MULTIPLE MANUALS
The game itself is language independent which allowed Queen Games to throw in an enourmous amount of rulebooks. Seven, to be exact, featuring Japanese! Thoughtful!

+/- BATTLE MECHANIC
I like the cube tower a lot. It's simple, fun and it works. The problem is that for players who would rather see plastic figures and a complex battle mechanic, this may be a letdown. Also, the cube tower is a bit prone to shaking tables - a sturdy place to put it on is a must.

- BEWARE ANALYSIS PARALYSIS!
This game will make the ap-prone players spend lots of time before finally allocating their cards. I know I always think and then re-think my decisions several times and I'm not particularly ap-prone.

- TAKES A LOT OF SPACE
Yeah, well. The board is big, the player boards are big, the supplies are big... It has to go somewhere.

- NO TWO PLAYER VARIANT
There are some fan two-player variants out there, but a lack of such in the game is a bit of a bad thing. As it works so well with more players though, this is only a minor con.

MY RATING: 9
I loved the game since I played it for the first time, and when I bought it it went up to my Top 10 and looks like it's going to stay there. My only regret is that I'm simply not playing "Shogun" enough, due to the lack of players.

by joehn

My gaming group is craving for war action. But shogun really doesn't serve that purpose effectively (they are mainly casual board-gamer, they hate complicated rule).

In this game, a heavy-attacking players are severely punished. They lost their armies (defence), they risk their home town (thinning out armies), therefore they lose their effective money also (in term of soldiers). So, i am wondering whether there exists a variant rule that doesn't punish the attacker really much but make it towards a heavy war but still an economic game nonetheless.

My friend suggested that whenever the attack is successful, the defender was punished with 1 or 2 warchest. Other thing that he suggested is the attacker is rewarded with they can move half of their surviving armies back home and they got half of their victim (died soldiers) revived on the destination.

Other variants that i've come up with is to reward a player that has the most province in a region with additional 2 points. And whoever has provinces in all 5 region will score 3 points.

What do you guys think?

	Thank you for that mrMute.

I kind of had a feeling the first two cases would become neutral.

I was wondering about the third case most of all. What if no attacker or defender came out of the tower but just farmers? do the green cubes get removed from the tray?

In both situations the province becomes neutral (it's a tie): you remove everything that's in the province: buildings, revolt markers.

Ok, say red attacks blue with 2 red cubes and blue has 1 cube for defence. All 3 cubes + all the cubes in the tray gets tossed into the tower but…

One - for some reason the only cubes to roll out are black and purple. Who wins here? (I think I know the answer to this one but just want to make sure)

Would this count as:

A. A no result and we'd have to step outside to settle this like men (if so where would the winner get the cubes from to put into the conquered territory? and how many?)
or
B. The territory just become neutral again (since all three armies just decided to go AWOL all at the same time?)

Two - what if 2 reds (attacker) and 2 greens (farmer) rolled out but no blue (defender) and there was no revolt token on the province?

Does this mean that :

A. The blue army ran off when they saw the reds coming over the border leaving the farmers to fend for themselves, who through local knowledge of terrain and sheer determination fought valiantly for their homes and loved ones after which leaving their families to return to their traditional faming ways before there were talk of lords and empires (province goes back to neutral)?
or
B. Even though the blue army just ran off leaving the farmers to fend for themselves, they fought valiantly for their blue feudal master and still count it as a blue victory? (if so, where would the blue guys get their cubes from and how many)?

Three - no reds and no blues but just greens. Do the greens still get removed from the tray even though no one turn up to the fight?

To the OP, if you can't pay the treasure cost for the action, then you may not use ANY part of that action - its as if you skipped taking that action.

Also, if you do have the treasure you MUST expend the treasure to take the action. So, for the action where you pay a single treasure chest and get one army and then can perform a move (no battles) then you can add the army OR move unless you have the treasure.

They are used to signify that you are MOVING at least one army from the territory you selected into an adjacent territory. If that adjacent territory happens to contain one or more enemy armies (or its a neutral territory), THEN a battle occurs.

See page 8 in the rules.

Right beside your post it says your name, your username, and even has some picture of Altaïr from Assassin's Creed with a Megaphone on a stick and a Eco-pack on his back.

Edit: Now that I think about, sometime when I get home tonight I will try to add some more facts to liven things up. These facts are actually kinda bland, but that's prolly why I didn't get much geek gold for it.

Thread: Shogun:: General:: A Review of Shogun Facts (2006)

by wonderflex

The Factual Review of Shogun (2006)

The Basic Facts

Shogun is a board game, which takes players though the Sengoku period of Japanese History in a fashion akin to the game “Wallenstein.” It was created by Dirk Henn, who also created Wallenstien, and was released in 2006 by Queen Games.

The Component Facts

Shogun comes in a rectangular box with a picture on it’s cover and a summary of the game on the back. Inside of the box are the following:

·	A two sided game board with different territory set-ups on each side
·	An awesome battle tower*
·	Daimyo cards
·	Action cards
·	Event Cards
·	War Chest Cards
·	Special Cards
·	Province Cards
·	Six sets of 62 different colored cubes used for battle and territory claiming
·	20 green cubes for farmer armies
·	28 castle tiles, 26 temples and 26 theatres used to gain victory points
·	35 chests used to represent money
·	Instructions provided in English, Italian, Spanish, French, Norwegian, German and Japanese.

The Gameplay Facts

In Shogun each player is given cubes to represent the army of the Daimyo of their choosing which will be used to secure territories. In addition to securing territories with armies there are other actions which can be done on territories to gain victory points – actions such as placing temples, theaters and castles. Battles are played out by throwing the opposing forces into the battle tower. At the end of a game the player with the most victory points is declared the winner.

The Miscellaneous Facts

.	The game is designed for 3-5 players ages 12 and up
·	Games are designed to last approximately 90-120 minutes
.	The Sengoku period was approximately 1467-1573
.	The total weight is five lbs.
.	At the time of this writing Shogun is the #73 most popular “geography game” on Amazon.com’s sales rank.
.	The reviewer likes this game.*

*this view is an opinion and is to be disregarded.

Edit: Change of title to more accurately reflect the content. Further edits to change asterisk definition and then add another asterisk. Most recent edit was made to add extra facts after getting home to read the box for additional information.
Reply: Shogun:: Variants:: Re: Customizable 2-player variant for Shogun

by Lord_Kristof

Tried the "relaxed" game yesterday, and we only made it to finishing the first year. I hate to say it, but as far as the mechanics of this variant are ok, the game itself seems less interesting with two players. Simply, there's not much going on. Plus, after my girlfriend had almost 10 points of advantage, I didn't really see how I could win.
So it's not saying that your variant is bad, I just think that it's really hard to prepare a 2-player variant for this game.
Then again, we'll probably try the "cramped" solution one day and see how that goes.
