However, I wouldn't be able to handle the stress of the possibility of screwing up and ruining someone's beautiful map.

Well, you could sell off the current successful map for the cost of whatever dollar amount + their paper map, so you can make another mounted map to sell for the cost of $X + paper map, so you can...etc etc. But then you run the risk of being stuck with a bum map yourself! :)

Excellent job you've done there. Two thumbs up!

Thanks Joel. For some strange reason, each time I read that page I managed to blank on that key sentence.

I must say that the rule book for this game is superb. I can't imagine a better piece of writing for a game. I laughed out loud a number of times -- and laughing is pretty much the very last thing I feel like doing normally when I read rules.

by Hatchling

	Two questions:

I have 22 french counters. How many should I have? Is this a full list of all the leaders: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/34097? Either I didn't get a a Louis de Dampierre counter with my game (unlikely), or it is hiding somewhere (likely). Would someone be so kind as to describe the information on that counter (what region he`s from, what his stats are, and who is on the other side of the counter)?

Second, am I right to assume that the leaders with black numbers for battle and bravery are the ones used in the "100 year war scenario", and the white numbered leaders are the ones used in the "lion in winter" scenario?

I can't find this in the rules, but judging from this geekfile --	http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/34097 -- it seems to be the case.

Thanks a million for any help.

Thanks to all for helping clear up my confusion. I will re-read the rules before my next game. I'm sure the suggestion that they will be a lot more meaningful after a game or 2 or 3 is correct - it seems that is almost always the case with games and rules.

Thanks again!

:)

If that is the case then the French move into the region without placing an aggressor marker, and the English arrive later as the aggressors. Control markers are not considered when placing aggressor markers. Section 6.1 has a section entitled "Placing Aggressor Markers:" that states the conditions.

As rulebooks go WofG's is really well written, but it's definitely worth a reread once you have a game or two under your belt. With the overall mechanics of the game better seated in your brain you can place the details in their correct context much more effectively. I was playing boundaries incorrectly until I reread after three or four games.

              Sag.

I think the marker remains on the board as the only moment you remove Agressor Markers is at the beginning of the phase when you determine the control of areas. I think that even if you remove the control token your opponent has still the chance of regaining control of the region invading it after you (just like you explain) so all he is doing this turn is to come in defense of his lands...

by TerrythePirate

In our game last night the English player left a territory occupied only by his control marker. The French player took advantage of this situation and moved three leaders (with their armies) into that territory, placing an aggressor marker in the territory. On his next move with an advantage of 3 leaders to one leader and a control marker, he removed the English control marker from that territory leaving no trace of the English occupancy of the territory.

Subsequently the English player moved more forces into the territory and battle was joined.

My question is this - in our reading of the rules (it was our first game, though almost surely not our last) it appeared to us that the aggressor marker placed by the French when their forces first moved into the territory would remain there and that during the battle phase the French would be the aggressor.

Logic, however, might suggest that since the French had fully occupied the territory and removed the English control marker, signifying that the English no longer had control of the territory, perhaps the initally placed French aggressor marker should have been removed. Then when the English (later in the same turn) RE-invaded the territory, they should have placed an aggressor marker of their own and hence been the aggressor during the ensuing battle phase.

If I have missed something in the rules that would clarify this, I would greatly appreciate that being pointed out - or, if not, how do all of you feel? Should the French still be the aggressor even though they at one point were the sole occupants of the territory? or not?

Thanks!

Thanks!

You can find the supplies you need at art stores like Curry's.

I have not had any trouble with warping. I've made a few boards now -- see my Dead of Night, and my Ogre -- and I've never had any warping. The key, I think, is to use the right glue. 3M Super 77 glue goes on thin but is very strong. Other glues might be thick or water based and contribute to the possibility of warping.

Do you have any problems with the illustration board warping? I've used the thicker stuff before and it was great for counters but I got severe warpage on bigger peices. I can't remember what spray adhesive I used, and I wonder if that was part of the issue. Mind you, I live in Calgary and it's as dry as the freaking Gobi desert here.
Oh and the map looks fantastic, great job.

by Hatchling

Here is what I did to mount my map and provide it with a protective shell. Though this was a bit stressful to do (one mistake ruins an expensive and beautiful game), everything worked out well and I am happy with the results. Now I don't need to worry about plexiglass and so on.

Tools:
-sharp knife. I use a rotary blade (like a sharp pizza cutter) because it makes a smoother cut. But a box cutter or exacto blade will work just fine if you go carefully. I changed my blade 3 times to ensure precision.
-self-healing mat to protect your table from cuts.

Materials:
-book binding tape (aka librarian's tape). A flexible but strong cloth tape that librarians use to bind books. This is what you will need to make hinges that hold the board pieces together.
-Illustration board, medium or heavy thickness. I bought two pieces 30 x 40", medium thickness (2mm).

Sprays:
-3M Super 77 spray glue. This is a must. Other glues will wrinkle the map.
-Krylon Low Odour Clear Gloss. This is optional. It gives the board a protective shell. It's acrylic.
-Krylon Matte Finish. This takes the shine off the glossy shell if you put that on.

Method:

1. Cut the map into 4 equal pieces along the fold lines. Take your time and be exact. Cut down the middle lengthwise, then down the middle across. Since the map folds in eight, each of the 4 pieces will have a crease across the middle. I will now refer to these pieces as map quadrants.

2. Cut the illustration board into 8 pieces that are exactly the same size as a map quadrant folded in half. That is, each piece of illustration board should be exactly half the size of the 4 quadrants.

3. With the bookbinding tape, tape two board pieces together to correspond to each map quadrant. Now you should have four pieces of board matching the size of the 4 map quadrants. The tape acts as a hinge that gives extra support.

4. Glue the 4 map quadrants onto the 4 board pieces with the tape hinge facing the underside of the map. You want the board to fold so that the map sides face each other. Here is some extra detail on how to do this with precision. For each map and board piece:
-open the board on a work table, hinge side facing up.
-place the map quadrant on top and line up the edges exactly.
-clamp one side/half of the map & board together with paper clamps.
-fold the un-clamped half of the map over the clamped half. This will reveal the illustration board beneath, half the hinge, and the underside of half the map quadrant.
-spray glue onto the illustration board and the exposed half of the hinge. Don't worry if a bit of spray gets onto the exposed underside of the map.
-fold the map down onto the illustration board and smooth it out using a clean piece of cardboard or something equivalent.
-Wait a few minutes, unclamp the second side, fold that second side over the first and spray-glue it like you did to the first side. The result should be an exactly mounted map quadrant that folds in half

5 (optional): On each mounted map quadrant, spray 3 coats of the acrylic, wait 30 minutes (no less!) and spray a couple of coats (at 5 minute intervals) of the matte finish.

6. With the bookbinding tape, make a hinge on the back of the boards between the bottom map quadrants and the top map quadrants (that is, hinge the bottom left to the top left, and hinge the bottom right to the top right). Finally, make a hinge on the back between the top left and the top right quadrants. Make sure that that you tape the pieces flush together...you don't want gaps in your map when you're playing. The result should be the same as mine.

Here it is opened up. The lines are minimal, just like a professionally mounted board:

Here is a photo of the mounted map whem folded. The dice are there to give you a sense of scale:

Finally, here is a photo of how everything fits in the box. The map is underneath the other components:

Let me know if you have any questions.

Early runs got 2 full sheets of the merc/troops counters so that they would have enough of the ordinary troops. The mercs, knights, gunners, et al were not supposed to be used beyond the base level, meaning about 1/2 the extra sheet was not needed. Would certainly make sense on the reprint to sub a 1/2 sheet instead of a whole sheet with unneeded counters.

	From Wikipedia

Gilles de Rais (1404 – 1440), was a Breton knight, the companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc, and a Marshal of France, but is best known as a prolific serial killer of children. He was born in late 1404 to Guy de Laval and Marie de Craon, but grew up under the tutelage of his maternal grandfather Jean de Craon following the deaths of his parents in 1415. De Rais' fortunes increased substantially with his marriage in 1420 to the wealthy Catherine de Thouars, and gifts of money granted him following the War of the Breton Succession. From 1427 to 1435, Rais served as a commander in the Royal Army, and in 1429 fought beside Joan of Arc in some of the campaigns waged against the English and their Burgundian allies during the Hundred Years War. In 1434–35, he retired from military life, dabbled in the occult, and depleted his wealth by staging an extravagant theatrical spectacle of his own composition.
Sometime between spring 1432 and spring 1433, the first child-murder occurred and was followed by similar crimes. The victims may have numbered in the hundreds. In 1440, Rais reacted violently in a dispute with a clergyman and the church conducted an investigation in which his crimes were brought to light. At his trial, the parents of missing children in the surrounding area and Rais's own accomplices-in-crime testified against him. The ecclesiastical court excommunicated him and the secular court condemned him. He was executed by hanging at Nantes on 26 October 1440.

My copy came with a half-sheet that included a bunch of mercenaries, instead of the two copies referred to there. In all, I believe there were either two-and-a-half sheets or three sheets, probably depending on the print run you have.
I think the two copies of sheet 1 only went to preorders. Or at least it switched to half sheets shortly thereafter.

This is without checking any resources, but I think this may address your question. Earlier today someone posted pictures of the counter sheets for this game, and also posted a note from MMP saying all copies of this game included two copies of sheet 1. This is not the case. My copy came with a half-sheet that included a bunch of mercenaries, instead of the two copies referred to there. In all, I believe there were either two-and-a-half sheets or three sheets, probably depending on the print run you have.

Just wondering... I didn't keep track of the number of counter sheets that came with this before punching all of the pieces, and wanted to ensure I got everything.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I am slow to create variants myself, especially if the game's mechanism does not (really) require it, and it create long-term problems that were not part of the original intent (Sag's point on pandora).

Worth a try, though I fear you're opening pandora's box.

If your opponent has an opportunity to siege roll with a good number you may consider decontrolling the area out from under them prior to the battle.

             Sag.

Kevin, you're absolutely right about the accompanying nobles but I thought that was the point of requiring a three star leader to command the special cavalry troops. If you're going to have a chance at besieging enemy controlled areas though - especially those with a 2 or 3 point value, you're going to want the die roll modifier of the gunners (or trebuchets, if we're talking the Lion in Winter scenario). Those expensive siege troops were a luxury only royalty could afford to use. I'm just suggesting that the rules variant would address this.

Well, if you're really worried about "reality," it's unlikely the King of France would go to battle without some other nobles with him.

Those minor nobles can be part of his group that attacks whatever it is you want to attack and he'll have the benefit of the gunners without having to make up a special rule to that effect.

The rule preventing transfer of troops often leaves my best leader with no siege artillery. I can't accept that the King of France would be left without cannon because they're with a minor noble in Ile de France. In the troop deployment phase I think it should be possible to detach and redeploy gunners to three star leaders (perhaps only Kings).
Any thoughts?
