I completely agree with additional races!!!! Battlelore is supposed to be a Fantasy battle game with a medieval theme. There are already many human figures to represent human armies. Bring on the FANTASY aspect. Not only monsters and creatures (which are awesome) but High Elves, Chaos, Orcs, and Dark Elves.... ohhh and expand the Dwarfs!! Complete armies for different races.

And finally DEFINITELY, a campaign system. I have Memoir '44 and though fun never played it much. Now, with the Campaigh Book, it is seeing plenty of table time!!!!!

Lets hope FFG and RB take notice. They have a fabolous game system!!!!

After re- reading the posts here, I LOVE the OP's idea for the elves! Hope FFG reads this! ;)

The idea of a quarterly magazine is one I would have never come up with, but it has certainly worked in the past for other games.

If not an actual magazine, perhaps a quarterly (or semiannual) PDF publication that you could download from the FFG site for a modest fee...

I think they have the "small number of figs" expansions well covered with heroes and the two monsters expansions. I think it's time to get back into large-figure-count expansions: new races, new stuff for existing races, that kind of thing.
Reply: BattleLore:: General:: Re: Tips on teaching this game?

by bippi

Ok, so... his first session and my first session.

What did I learn?
a) Organize this. Pull it out of the box, and organize it. Setting this up was a massive undertaking for "lets play a game".
b) Green archers are toothless.

What did I teach?

He really wanted to play dwarves and goblins. I wanted to play humans. Naturally, there HAD to be something special for the dwarves, and something special for the goblins. This being our first game, I said, "Dwarves are brave, goblins are not... but there are more goblins."

We nixed the terrain for this undertaking. I didn't like the short-sword v. long sword mounted rules, and I totally ignored formation rules for this game.

Overall, it went really really well. Although, I'd like to play this against someone maybe a little more experienced who could teach me a thing or two, if I could one of these days.

It's almost a universal truth... people hate it when you pull out, "oh, but since they're _____ they can do _____." They don't mind it when they know in advance, but more often than not there's a whole reference book on the subject...so there's no way you could relate everything in a first teaching.

I also think the mounted units, if they're red, are already really really powerful IMHO... and I think the short-sword ignore-bonus rule makes them more powerful. However, that's typical per the scenario. We didn't play any scenario... just set-up our guys and played.

Session: BattleLore:: The goblins invade Castille!

by MerricB

Following my first game with Nash, we immediately embarked on a second game. Skipping over the utterly boring First Chevauchee, we moved to Burgos, Castille in 1366, where Henry of Transtamara was under attack by Don Pedro the Cruel and his goblin mercenaries!

I played Don Pedro for this battle; my side is the one to the bottom of the photographs.

It's quite true that I have a number of games that I haven't played that much compared to the expansions I've bought for them. BattleLore sits in that category. I'm actually quite unused to using goblins; the rare games I've played of it lately have been more historical (Hundred Years War and Scottish Wars). So, it was fun to get to play goblins again.

Soon enough, I was taking advantage of their speed - and a couple of Advance orders - to press Nash's forces heavily on the right.

The goblins swarmed in, and Nash found his units retreating and then surrounded. Meanwhile, he wasn't rolling retreat flags in his attacks on me, so the cowardly goblins weren't breaking and running. The low stream also allowed my goblin riders to attack from the side. Things weren't looking good for Henry's forces!

Meanwhile, on my left and right, Nash's cavalry and his infantry moved up to engage my lines and soon battle was joined. My light infantry took a pounding, but otherwise my lines held; maneuvering was treacherous as we tried to stay in lines to take advantage of boldness and each attempted to attack the other's unprotected flanks. Nash was slowly gaining ascendancy here.

The battle continued to rage in the centre, and my troops were failing me. I couldn't press my advantage with the goblins and my archers were beginning to wonder what they were doing in the middle of the melee! Having the heavy infantry there began to swing things in my favour, though, and I forced Nash's cavalry to retreat and began to pound in on his infantry.

And then, everything went wrong: His cavalry attacked again, on my left and my right. Pursuing and following on, they were able to eliminate two of my depleted units in quick time, and then he moved in for the kill: his cavalry and medium infantry surrounding my heavy infantry. I couldn't believe it: stripped of their comrades, they were easy prey for Nash's troops and when victory was in my grasp, I tasted the bitter dregs of defeat as the infantry went down in the mud.

Victory was Nash's: 5 medals to 4!

Session: BattleLore:: Introducing... Agincourt!

by MerricB

Last week, my copy of [thing=45543]BattleLore: Heroes[/thing] arrived, so I trotted off to Randy's place last Thursday to play it. Unfortunately, our games of Space Hulk and ASL SK#2 took too long and so I didn't get a chance to try the new expansion.

However, on Friday I took my BattleLore game into Good Games Ballarat with the view to introducing it to one or two people so that one day I'd be able to play some of the more advanced scenarios with them. Nash turned up, and I talked him into a couple of games with me. (To be honest, it wasn't very hard to do so).

I've played a couple of games of Memoir '44 with Nash, so the basic concepts aren't unfamiliar to him, but BattleLore has quite a few tweaks, so I started with the first scenario: Agincourt. In which the English don't have Longbows. (It's a weapon type introduced later, but the first scenario doesn't have it).

(French to top, English to bottom)

As a result, the English are generally fated to lose Agincourt in this game. So, I took the command of the English and let Nash take the French. Of course, in my opening hand I had a Darken the Sky, so Nash was soon finding his heavy cavalry under attack with clouds of arrows darkening the sky. Both heavy cavalry units lost a figure and the right flank one was forced to retreat.

His cavalry charged again, but soon found itself in a great deal of trouble. I moved my medium infantry up to counter it, and although he was able to destroy on it its units, soon his cavalry had broken itself on my lines and I was able to take the two medals. Now it was going to be down to his infantry and medium cavalry, and his lines began to move up to meet mine.

As his medium cavalry outstripped his infantry, it came under concentrated attack, and was defeated. At this point, the score was 3 medals to 1 in my favour! One more and I'd take the battle!

With his infantry line now engaging my infantry and archers, the tide of battle began to turn. I was using "triangles" of units whenever I could - as was he - to make the units Bold and able to Battle Back, but his troops were far more effective than mine. Especially on my right flank, where soon three of my units were down to a single figure each!

The final rites of the battle occurred on that flank: Needing to destroy only three figures, he played an Forward card, activating 2 units in each area. This allowed him to outmaneuver me and attack my weaker units. Three units destroyed in one turn, and the victory was his - 4 medals to 3!

Hi there BGGers

Subject says it all really but in a bit more detail, my plans for my 'release' ,Sieges, would really kick something if I could do nice art for the castles but that is not the direction my greatness lies So seeing how my google-fu let me down does any one know of some pretty plans or better yet some software that'll let me create my own (I'll then do screen capture) 2d top down images of castles.

If you've seen Lords of the Realm stuff that would be great (my pc won't run the LotR castle creation software)

Chris

Thanks for the clarification on the spider.

No, one can only web or poison units that the spider is battling with - either attacking or battling back.

So I could choose to web first then attack or to attack first then web?

Yes you could choose to web - the rolled lore being used with creatures always has options: one can either place a token in ones goblet, place it on the creature (though for some creatures this is pointless - the Hill Giant, for example), or use it for (any) one of the creature's lore abilities.

The rules say, "When a creature rolls a lore symbol in battle, instead of using it immediately, its player can decide to set the resulting lore token aside."

This suggests that you cannot put lore rolled by a creature in your goblet.

I have owned and been playing Battlelore since 2007. Very replayable. I believe FFG is committed to it, it was slow going on them getting out these expansions, but Richard Bord is still very involved with it and the fact they put out the three expansions they are working on indicates to me they are still planning to support it.

by jcikal

Outside of the 3 expansions that we know are coming in the next couple of weeks/months, how committed is FFG to Battlelore? Will we will see additional tiles and more types of armies in the future?

I'm making a decision between CC:Ancients and Battlelore, and after seeing Scott Nicholson's review of Battlelore, I really have to admit it sounds like a good system but I don't want to commit cash on a "dormant" game that will see sporadic expansions once in a blue moon.

Anyone know if FFG will release more bigger expansions in 2010 and beyond? It seems a shame that such a good game would go to waste, especially after buying it from the original publisher.

Speaking of which, if I do decide on Battlelore, is there a difference in quality of the components, particularly the figures (I heard some came bent in the DOW days) and board and tiles? I know the cards will be top notch from FFG, but since I have had experience with warped boards from another FFG game, Tide of Iron, I just want to hear (or read in this case) from someone who has had experience with both the DOW and FFG versions.

Thanks.

I find the best way to deal with an enemy creature is just to ignore it and hope to kill it on a battleback at some point.

Let me start off by saying I agree with you to a certain extent :) I like the impact creatures have on the game, but yes, it plays quite differently when they are involved (which I think is a good thing :) - variety being the spice of BL ;) ). And yes, ignore them and maneuver away from them (hard to do with the spider and EE :) ) are sound strategies that I employ when going up against them.

Still I do have some creature queries.

Giant spider regarding the use of lore:

If I am next to two units with the spider and, while attacking one of them, throw a lore symbol can I web either unit?

No, one can only web or poison units that the spider is battling with - either attacking or battling back.

If my spider is charged up with one lore token can I move it into a group of enemies, web one of them and attack a different one? Can I attack first and then web any adjacent unit of my choice?

Nope, same reason as above.

If I throw a second lore symbol, so that the spider is now carrying two lore tokens, can I then choose to use the web instead of poison? Can I web two units at once?

Yes you could choose to web - the rolled lore being used with creatures always has options: one can either place a token in ones goblet, place it on the creature (though for some creatures this is pointless - the Hill Giant, for example), or use it for (any) one of the creature's lore abilities.

No to the second part of this question - for the reason above, only being able to interact with a unit that one is battling with. The spider could web multiple units during the same turn via battlebacks or using a lore card such as "Bonus Attack".

Earth Elemental - I noticed on the FFG website that the rock elemental is removed from the board if it is not ordered. Does something similar happen to the earth elemental?

Nope, that was a restriction added to the Rock Elemental in order to balance it out as a "one token"/Level 1 creature. It is not a restriction placed on the EE.

Lastly, when playing CtA the creature symbol is green on every card. Does this mean the only creature you should place is the spider? What is a good way to get creatures involved in the game given that (as far as I can tell) there are very few adventures that use anything other than the spider?

Any level 1 creature may be used for the default creature banner on the CtA cards. I expect CtA cards to be updated with the release of future races and the introduction of "multi-level" (requiring more than one war council token) creatures. The reason that few official adventures use other creatures than the spider is due to expansions through DoW generally not requiring the use of other releases aside from the base game. Any level 1 creature may be substituted for any other level 1 creature.

by AGKorson

Here are some photos that show how I used the Litko bases.

This shows the base, which is comprised of a 1.375in x 1.375in flexible steel piece with 3mm rounded corners that is attached to a 1.375in x 1.375in x 3mm craft plywood with 3mm rounded corners. The fex steel was actually a bit larger than the plywood, so I had to trim them. But I think that ended up making them look nicer.

You can also see the magnets attached to the bottom of the figures. I ordered custom size of 0.65in x 0.65in flex magnets. That size works great because it is just a hair smaller than the figure's footprint. No need to worry about trimming.

Notice the small hole in the center of the base?

That hole is sized to snugly fit the banners. Because the magnets aren't real strong, I found I couldn't lift a full unit by grabbing the banner attached to a figure. With the banner centered, it's much easier to pick up and move units, and it looks nice too, being symmetrical.

The other benefit I found is that it makes it very easy to remove units from the Plano box I store them in. In the box, I have figures already attached to bases. Just stick a banner in the center, and lift. Voila! one unit ready for deployment! A benefit of the weaker magnets is that it's extremely easy to remove figures during the game.

For the mounted units, bases are made in the same way, just different size: 2in x 1.2in. Again, even though I ordered the plywood bases and flex metal bases in the same size, the metal was slightly larger. For the figures, 1.2in x .65in magnets fit the figures with just a slight bit of undersizing, similar to the foot units.

The larger surface area of the mounted units means the magnets stick a lot better than for foot units. So using a banner in the middle unit works well enough to pick up and move the whole unit.

When I ordered my bases, they did not have the 'heavy duty' option. I'd be interested to know if those are really stronger than the regular magnets. If they are, I might consider getting some and 'upgrading' my figures. It'd be relatively easy- peel off the old magnets from the figures, and attach the new.
Actually, they look and feel nearly identical; the only difference is the magnets are magnetized.

Yeah, there are some 'Mr. Obvious' type statements in there, but it is what it is...

Thread: BattleLore:: General:: Creature Clarification

by h4xz0r5

Let me start off by saying that I am not a huge fan of the super-extra-randomness that creatures bring to Battlelore. I find the best way to deal with an enemy creature is just to ignore it and hope to kill it on a battleback at some point. I would rather focus my attacks on weakening my opposition then maybe weakening my opposition.

Giant Spider - This is my favorite creature. I like to send it behind enemy lines to pick off weak units and maybe web a couple of units here and there.

Regarding the use of lore:

If I am next to two units with the spider and throw a lore symbol can I web either unit?

If my spider is charged up with one lore token can I move it into a group of enemies, web one of them and attack a different one? Can I attack first and then web any adjacent unit of my choice?

If I throw a second lore symbol can I then choose to use the web instead of poison? Can I web two units at once?

Earth Elemental - I noticed on the FFG website that the rock elemental is removed from the board if it is not ordered. Does something similar happen to the earth elemental?

The reason I ask is that I feel the summoning hex of the earth elemental is pretty useless. I think it would improve the earth elemental if this was the case. It would also put a massive strain on lore reserves.

Lastly, when playing CtA the creature symbol is green on every card. Does this mean the only creature you should place is the spider? What is a good way to get creatures involved in the game given that (as far as I can tell) there are not any official epic scenarios that use the earth elemental.

OK, here's a pic. I've detached the top layer and opened it. The opened layer is all infantry. I have another layer for Mounted and another for Ranged. The last is specialty units. I find this helps me set the game up and break it down quickly.

This isn't the only way to do this, of course, but you'll have a hard time finding another method that's as inexpensive AND flexible.

Snap together. When you buy "one", you get two trays and one lid with a handle. Snap one tray on top of the other and snap the lid on top. I have two of these so the bottom pair just snaps on to the other pair and the extra lid is set aside somewhere. This is enough for everything Battlelore that's out now.

I went and looked at the box and found the name Snapware. Looking at their site, I believe the eighth one down is what I got.

http://www.snapware.com//product_buy.asp?dept_id=3001

The only difference is that I don't have it as 6 bins. I have three bins on one side and a long bin on the other.

About 2 Years ago I purchased a Plano Tackle box from Walmart for my base set. It works great. However now I am looking for something similar to use with all the expansions. The original one I had was simply 4 plano trays that fit in a black carry case that had a plastic bar on a hinge to lock them in place. Now all the tackle boxes I am seeing have at least 2 trays of little dinky slots that aren't movable, what have you folks out there used lately?

by Kaph

I reciently taught this game to my 7 year old daughter. She had no issues with it at all.

First game we played was the first scenario, I left out the Bold rules. Everytime either of us makes a move, I reinforced the rules behind it. It seems redundent and silly, but it works. "Ok, i'm moving a blue infantry, he can move one and attack, if I wasn't going to attack I could move him 2, but I am, so it is only one hex. And they are blue, so they get 3 dice." Ect Ect Ect. We also used all of the movement cards, I just explaned them to her as she got them.

Second Game, we played the first scenario again, this time we used the bold rules. Everytime someone would attack someone else, I would ask, "How many other units is this unit touching that I am attacking?" If it was two I would explain that they could ignore 1 flag and fight me back. And somebody attacked a unit that wasn't bold and a flag was rolled, I just restated the rules again, "Ok that unit isn't bold, so they have to retreat one hex." Repitition is the key.

Third game, same as the second.

Fourth Game, Scenario 2, but same process as the second game.

Fifth Game, Added lore, but we used the historical lore rules as found in the scottish wars pack. This takes out lots of the complex cards, and it is easy to teach.

Sixth game, same as fifth.

She is doing great, and really enjoying it.

Hope it goes well for you.

rdk

I sanded the bottoms to flatten them out, but only had limited success. Some of the figures had bottoms that were very uneven. I suppose that if you spent more time to ensure the bottoms were perfectly flat, you'd have the best results.
I agree, I generally keep my lines in formation and take a slower approach and that is what I have encouraged her to do, but when the game present an opportunity to strike in the past she has been tentative. Now she hit as soon as the opening was there...caught me a bit flat footed. I have also probably played around 50 games, though mostly from the first 10 as I have taught a lot of players from the beginning.

It was great to see her seize the day when the opportunity came and take a risk with the hope of a bigger reward.

My impression after 50+ games of BattleLore is that patience and keeping one's lines bold, until an opportunity for well focused aggression occurs, usually wins the day. If patience is her usual temper, I am guessing she probably wins a fair amount of your bouts.

Session: BattleLore:: Free Companies on a War Footing (or When my wife became aggressive in Battlelore)

by Lothiam

My wife and I have been working through the tutorial adventures for Battlelore over the past couple months and we finally arrived at #9. Called "Free Companies on a War Footing" She chose the French side of the board to get more experienced with Goblins, leaving me the English with several Iron Dwarf units and the giant spider.

The game opened up simply enough with her scouting on the right flank and moving one of her Goblin mounted units to the center. Sensing she was seting up for movement to her right and center (my left and center) I moved two units forward on my left with the goals to end up with two bold pie shaped formations at the end of my second turn.

Much to my chagrin she responded with a rapid attack unlike anything I had seen from her before. Bring two Medium Mounted units from her flank she met the two unsupported units head on and thanks to the pursuit rules included with the cavalry took out a Medium infantry unit on her second turn. Score 0-1

Suddenly my plan of hammering her from my right side was in jeopardy, my next turn was spent shoring up my right side and ensuring I was not in an unsupported position. The next couple turns found us maneuvering units. Me preparing for an advance up the middle and her fortifying the middle and moving her goblins away from my Iron Dwarves. I found my self still frustrated with no cards for my left flank and my dwarves were left as spectators through most of the battle.

Once again my fearless opponent struck for my jugular bringing in an attack in the center with a Medium Mounted human and two mounted Goblins. I responded with a lore card moving her human mounted unit back to its original hex. She damaged my Blue Mounted unit and left me in a vulnerable position, but her in a more so. I played mounted charge and took both of her mounted Goblins. Score 2-1 She responded with Counter Attack and my damage Medium Mounted went down. Score 2-2

Now the game became a fast and furious series off attacks in the middle as she had two more mounted charges in her hand. The first of which she focus on the middle of my support formation. On her first roll she rolled 3 flags against me and drove my Medium infantry to the base row of the board. Suddenly I had two unsupported units again though this time on a hill and in a forest. She was not in supported formation, but with mounted charge was due to inflict some pain. Thankfully it only cost me one Troop. Score 2-3

Now that she was unsupported I attempted to kill of some of her cavalry and while I got all three of them to one unit, I could not finish off a troop mainly thanks to some nice retreats in her favor. By the end of the turn I was back in supported formation. Another mounted charge later and one more troops felling to her storming cavalry. Score 2-4

Now my right side came back into action and took out a Green infantry unit of hers, leaving me supported over there and her unsupported. Score 3-4. One attack in the center and two of her cavalry finally bit the dust. Score 5-4. Another Medium infantry succumbed to her relentless attacks leaving us tied at 5. Finally my saving of lore paid off and I played Assault, attacking with every troop still under my control. I weakened many units, but could not bring the final blow.

Now we were tied 5-5 I had many weakened units (including two within striking distance with one measly foot soldier left). She had no troops under two units. With a Medium infantry and cavalry she targeted my unsupported Heavy Infantry on a hill, a miss from the cavalry left it down to one roll, a retreat was rolled and I escaped unscathed.

Now I attacked on the left finally with my Iron Dwarves and on the first roll killed two goblin units remaining in one of her troops. Sweet sweet victory. We both enjoyed the game immensely.

(Except I used wooden bases instead of acrylic ones.) The magnets aren't that strong, and don't stick well to the flexible metal unless the bottoms of your figures are perfectly flat. I'd recommend testing it on a few to see if you like it before buying all those bases. YMMV.

Uh...considering there's still two more expansions yet to be released, and more in the pipes, I would say that no, BattleLore is NOT discontinued.

FFG picked it up with plans to continue the franchise.
I think your LGS staff needs to do a bit more homework. ;)

Chances are that another print run is in order. But, there was a large surplus of stock, which was transferred to FFG, so i assume they just need to re-order, possibly from a different distributor.

Nobody saved the picture or took a screen dump of the page?

I´m not interested in GRR Martin stuff myself, but in due time this would probably be a great way for FFG to go.

I´m sure a lot of Battlelore players are fans of the Westeros setting, and I´m sure a lot of fans of the setting would try (and of coures love) this version of Battlelore, thus expanding the player-base.

But this really shouldn´t be planned as earlier than the third or fourth expansion after Creatures.

If there is not one or two full army releases and a boxed campaign set in the original 100 years war uchronia setting before this is released then I think Major Sholto would be right about FFG using up the goodwill of the allready impatient player-base.

The battle for the Trident was one I can definitely remember, and I'm sure there were others.

I'd love to see this as a big box expansion for BattleLore.

I for one would be ok with a westeros expansion. A couple scenarios, a couple character heros perhaps and a monster. Could be good. (of course a wildling army might scratch that elf itch and allow for some north vs south action from westros.

	Maybe.

But a guy with a portfolio like that can surely afford CS4. Just sayin'

A lot of the tiles in his example are already developed in BL (the forest, river, ford). If they were developing a supplement, wouldn't they just focus on unique Westeros tiles? For example a Lannister stronghold with the red and gold lion crest? or a Winterfell tile with the Stark Wolf? Nothing in this piece suggests anything unique to Westeros.

If FFG did take this kind of "change of direction," I'm not sure it would go over well. A Westeros version would NOT be in line with the Battlelore world. They would be using up the goodwill of an already impatient player-base to begin developing a game with a different tone. Battlelore players want MORE Battlelore development and expansions.

I could be wrong, but I think it would be a mistake for FFG to do this. Of course, G.R.R. Martin fans know what it's like to be impatient...he may be squandering the goodwill of his fans if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Given Adobe's prices, I can understand not rushing to upgrade (I only have CS3 because I was gifted a copy), especially if you're comfortable with a given edition's interface. Also, this picture appears first in his gallery, which seems to run most reverse chronologically (Innsmouth artwork for Arkham Horror comes before art for Android, which comes before the Arkham base set...), which makes me think its new.

Plus the caption specifically says "Battlelore: Battles for Westeros," so why use the Battlelore name if FFG was working on an answer to the game?

Just speculatin' too...

Just venturing a guess, but CS2 has been around awhile...and pre-dates FFG's Battlelore acquisition. This may have been some concept work done as an answer to Battlelore (Kind of like what Tide of War was for Memoir 44). FFG was probably playing with an idea along those lines to challenge Battlelore with their G.R.R. Martin license.

Just speculatin'
:D

by kostek

I've taught the game several times to adults.

The first time I jumped straight to a lore adventure. The game felt weighted down by rules, and the fun drowned. That person hasn't ever wanted to BL again.

Since then, I've used a two step process. I play the first scenario, omitting morale and pursuit. People have plenty to chew on with just the cards and different units types.

Then I immediately play the scenario again, this time adding in morale and follow-on options. In that scenario, morale tends to favor the British. Follow-on favors the French. Adding or subtracting the two rules helps keep things somewhat balanced. Somewhat.

This has worked well three times now. It gets to the fun part as quick as possible while keeping the confusion to a minimum.

Kids really seems to love the combat part, and to change that later may confuse him.
He will pick up easily then on the fact he can hide behind a tree :)
You dont even have to play a whole scenario you can just throw a couple units on the board.

MarcinW wrote:

There are some overpowerful, and some next to useless (like cattle riders). Therefore, the only way to make it balance (inspite of picking one - two -one, which ends up in taking combos to counter opponents combos, and some cards end up unused)is to gather two (preferably three) BL players to 'rate' all specialist cards according to their power and after they are rated (where cattle riders would be worth, say 10points, long bow, mounted knights 60pts each and so on) give every player 100 points to spend - first buys one, second two, first two and so on (implementation straight after buying). This system made me and my brother love Battlelore even more - it balances the game out, and makes even preparation extremely enjoyable. (long though). to the initial 100 pts we add another 30 for every War Council Point (used rarely, but sometimes you just have to have those additional goblin marauders on board to counter his arbalastiers :).
Enjoy

The point system you suggest sounds really interesting. But what do you mean by "War Council Point"?
It would be really cool if you could provide a list with the points you gave to each and all of the specialist cards.

Chalk me down for a siege expansion.

I think it's likely FFG will produce 'army' packs - that introduce new races as well as plenty of minis and units.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few more paper maps (a la Troll and Country) - but maps with a major difference - city maps with lots of built up areas and additional rules for street fighting, castle maps for siege rules, large bodies of water, caverns, etc. That would be cool.

I would also like to see some setting information. I think FFG have an opportunity to use this system to explore a good setting a la warhammer does. Whether it is uchronic or fantasy I don't mind so much. A big part of this could be a campaign system as mentioned. Another idea would be more specific adventures - maybe to tie in with the maps I mentioned previously. Scenarios that tie in with quite specific goals or 'chain of events' style paragraph stories that grow from choice in the game and results of choices.

I wouldn't object to a terrain pack - as long as they did something cool with it. Introduce a range of options like the ones I mentioned for the card maps above. Special locations, pallisades, castle walls, open water, adventure locations, so forth.

New creatures that use different dice...

A magic/events/lore/experience system that makes use of new dice (multiple different results/symbols per face that can be spent in different ways - maybe combined with map locations or heroes)

Those are just some of my wants/ideas...

Cheers,

Giles.

I had the same ideas. I really liked the thought of storming a castle.
Ive uploaded a BL campaign file in the files section.
Its a cleaned up version of the link above.

In it Ive come up with some rules regarding Siege engines, damage and ranges.
As well as Wooden Palisade and Stone Castle Walls, toughness and such.
Even ladders for scaling the walls.

Ive even found some models I think I am going to get a hold of and try for the game.
Rather detailed and right to scale.
The walls of course would have to be made.
Unless you changed your setup and when with that system from that UK gaming company.
Cant remember the name of it right now, but it starts with a K.
Their hexes are about twice the size of BL, but its modular which it cool.
They also have castles complete with siege engines, ladders, etc etc.

Having siege engine rules and models made official though would rock.

Cheers
J.R.

Absolutely. I meant SIEGE to infer siege engines and storming the walls rather than set up camp and starve them out :)

I'd not leave anything out, but progress through the scenario book. For me, half the fun is bringing the game components in slowly, and discovering a little more each time. It leaves a sense of adventure and discovery. Too often gamers seem to want all the whistles and bells up front forgetting how much fun it is to discover the simple stuff first.

You might want to play the first game with open hands to help him with his decisions, but the game does take it nice and stepwise in complexity from Agincourt onwards.

Bold especially is a really key concept I'd not leave out... a lot of the game seems to come from managing your units to be bold when necessary (I'm only half way through the basic set mind).

Only thing I really didnt do any thoughts on were the siege towers. Seemed to be too much trouble to implement them. But cannons, catapults, ballistae, palisades, and walls, done those. Now... sapping and counter sapping... that would be a trick.
It would be one thing to include siege engines into a battle, but a true siege?? The only way I could see that working would be with an ongoing campiagn. A siege thats acutally fought out would be quite a lengthy game.

We played some of the early scenarios (the ones with fixed setups) twice, but now that we've started playing with Lore that doesn't seem necessary.

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but doesn't the rulebook and scenarios kind of ease you into the rules?

In other words, I thought the first scenario used just the basic stuff, which were explained simply, and then the next scenario added another couple of rules, and the next scenario after that added a few more twists. By the time you get to the Lore part of BattleLore, you've established a lot of the game as a solid foundation before you get into the more complex aspects.

If that's the case, I'd recommend following the rulebook's example, and just teach enough to play the first scenario, and advance to the next scenario when you feel that he's ready, whether that's after one or two plays or perhaps more than that.

I would perhaps leave out lore and all of the "non-section" command cards. Not sure I would feel the need to eliminate retreats though as the they resolve quite easy.
Perhaps Bold would be difficult to comprehend in the beginning, but you could try after a while. I would.

Hope this helps, a little at least.

Best of luck with the teaching!

Any tips, things I should introduce first, things I should leave-out?

I'm not sure morale should come out, nor should retreating, but... maybe it would work. I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance.

After a long hiatus playing other things, Young general and Old Warrior returned to BattleLore. The nice thing about being young is that you don't have has much to remember, so what you do remember to tend to remember rather well. Young General retained his grasp of the rules without any trouble at all, even reminding the Old Warrior of a few he had forgotten during the hiatus.

The point of this scenario is to introduce the concept of a full war council. Each player had the option of choosing the composition of their war council with only a few limitations. Each player's commander has to be at Level 1 at least, there are no "strongholds" (introduced in the next scenario) and the Banner Player has the Giant Spider, which counts as one level for his war council.

Young general prefers to play with the monsters on his side, so we agreed he'd take the Banner Army. He chose to go with a Level 2 commander, giving him a hand of five command cards and a Level 2 Warrior Loremaster and a Level 1 Rogue Loremaster. The Spider rounded out the six-level council.

My choice was to go heavily militarized this time, so I took a Level 3 Commander, giving me six command cards and a Level 3 Warrior.

This made a Lore Deck comprised of 14 Warrior, 8 Rogue, 5 Wizards and 5 Cleric lore cards.

Troopwise, the Banner Army was pretty strong, with human troops comprising the center and right sectors with three Red, 4 Blue and a Green unit, plus the Spider. The left flank was Dwarves -- one red and three blue sword units. The Banner army was short on numbers of horse (just 2) and just a single missile unit (the green human unit on the right flank.)

My Standard army was much weaker in melee power, with just a single red human unit, five blue and three green. The humans made up the Standard center and left flank, facing the Banner human units. Facing the Dwarves were a mass of seven Goblinoid units, all green or blue. Our experience so far has been the Goblinoid quantity rarely makes up for Dwarvish quality and I determined from the beginning I'd do my best to keep the Goblins away from the Dwarves. My army did have an edge in cavalry units (three blue human horse and two green Goblin lizard-riders) and missile units (three).

The battlefield is rather unuusal in Battlelore, being devoid of any large exapns of clear ground. Instead it's all scattered hills and woods throughout, with the only extensive clear spots along the board edge. A small clearing existed where the Goblins set up, but otherwise every other clear hex in the central 7 rows of the map was next to a woods or a hill.

The two sides are nominally Burgundian and d'Armagnac, but this has no bearing on play.

My initial draw gave me three attack cards in the center, although my Lore hand was nothing special. I started off with some minor maneuvers to adjust my troops positions a little and improve my hand, expecting that my redoubtable, but young, opponent would follow his usual scattered toss-everything-and-see-what-sticks approach. While fatal in many wargames this kind of approach can work surprisingly well in BattleLore. It's hard to plan against because you literally don't know what's coming next and it tends to make efficient use of whatever cards one draws, although not the most efficient deployment of the troops.

Young General's dwarves made an effort against the Goblins, but apparently he failed to draw the cards needed for a sustained effort on that flank. The opposite flank was much better served by the card draws and the Spider and its escort pressed back that wing rather effectively.

Meanwhile I made my big center push, actually reinforcing the center with some troops detached from the two wings.

A long struggle ensued along the whole line, with my two flanks doing their best to hold on until the center was able to break through. Unfortunately the Banner center was pretty hard to crack, especially the two red sword units. Eventually the crisis of the battle was reached, with my army having just three victory medals while the Banner army had five -- leaving it one away from victory. Lore cards played a bigger role in this battle than earlier ones, although Young General still seems to be reluctant to part with them. On the other hand, I persisted in my spendthrift ways, and sometimes found myself needing to save up Lore over a couple of turns in order to play the cards I wanted. Generally the Lore cards were useful, although I did end up spending 8 Lore to activate a Lost Orders Rogue card (cost double Lore because I had no Rogue Loremaster) that ended up helping the Banner army because the random command card I forced him to play was really better than the card he had originally wanted to play.

Fortunately for my cause, I was able to execute a plan that had been in the making for several turns as I gathered even more forces in the center, including both Goblin mounted units and one full-strength human cavalry. I played a Mounted Charge along with the Cry Havoc Lore card. The Banner's Young General countered with a Mass Shield Lore card, a very good play that did mitigate the damage a little, but not enough to stop the Goblins and Humans from riding down the enemy with 5-dice and 6-dice attacks to bring me to the magic number of 6 victory medals.

The final score was 6-5, therefore, and there's little doubt that had the Mounted Charge fallen short the Banner army wouldn't have had any trouble grabbing that last casualty.

Lessons I derived from this encounter were to be a little more cautious about expending Lore cards and tokens for minor advantage because it may mean not being able to play the decisive card in time. I was vulnerable for a couple of turns as I massed not just my mounted forces but the lore tokens I needed to play the Cry Havoc card. The Banner army came within one figure of making that effort too late.

The lesson was reinforced that Goblin foot units are best kept out of the fighting when possible, especially when facing Dwarves. The Banner army had a shortage of command cards for the Dwarvish flank and a good thing, too. The Goblinoid mounted units' speed makes them very useful and being able to play a Mounted Charge/Cry Havoc combo made them into the equivalent of enhanced heavy cavalry for the decisive moment.

As usual. the game was entertaining to play and the actual gameplay only took a little over an hour, although setup time is starting to become substantial now that the full Lore rules are in effect.

From my blog at http://pawnderings.blogspot.com

Review: BattleLore:: Battlelore, from box to "I bent my Wookie"

by krechevskoy

Overview:: Battlelore has been out since before was a twinkle in BGG's user database. I will not be using this review as a great in-depth description of the combat as I am not there yet in capability for the game. So instead of making up tactics that do not work, I'll spare from blowing smoke up everyone's digested pie hole, pretending I do know tactics. When we all know I would weep and run like a goblin on double retreat.

Instead I will use this as a review so far. Starting from my experience out of the box to the 2 times I have played the game so far.

Be prepared as I will play the lore card “wall of text”.

Gamebits: This will be the crux of my review. Why? Because this and this alone piqued my interest to buy the game. Technically Mr Vasel has some responsibility of my interest in Battlelore as well when I first saw one of his reviews, and a darn fine job he did as well. Anyways, I want to give you all a firm perspective of the one item that made me buy the game. Especially when the box itself can seem a bit intimidating when you open it, and may offer OCD peeps a bit of dread when they open the box.

Opening the box: There are 2 layers of protected pieces in about 1 inch height of clear packaging. All the figures displayed in individual protective bubbles of pristine plastic goodness within the top slab that graces the opening of the Battle lore box. . Armies and banners all on display nicely, and some of the pieces are lumped into larger areas of the packaging.

Removing the plastic slab of pieces underneath is another plastic slab, this one holding the lore cups and giant spider prominently on the side, but this time there are not individual protective bubbles instead there are what look like entombed mass graves of troops intertwined in some abstract plastic version of what crushed souls would look like, underneath I can see another layer of less than plastic figurines. Where this seems some sick and twisted game piece version of Dante's Hells getting more grotesque as I go deeper into the packaging.

Miffed and confused I start liberating the pieces from their plastic (term to be used loosely) “protection”. Some troops are relatively unscathed, bent swords, slightly cockeyed or lowered shields. But some of the mounted units did not make it out so well. Directly out of the packaging, many of the horses are standing at a 45 degree angle, one of them dang near close to being bent at a right angle. I mess with some of the pieces trying to correct them like some battle veterinarian, fighting to keep the horse from being shot. I can manage to to remedy some of the crush damage, but they will never be the same again. For you “collector types” just learn to deal with it. I can really see some people getting bent out of shape over this, (no pun intended) but with the amount of pieces and unless you are hoping to paint some of them, just let it go.

Anyway now to the cardboard, there are 3 decks of cards to be separated and placed into movement, lore, and description quick reference cards. The cards are a bit flimsy, but they are not overly cheap, still would have liked to see them made a bit better as they are nothing to scream home about. You will also have to work the cards a bit as they will not slide over each other very will making shuffling difficult.

Next sheets of cardboard to punch out for the various hex terrains, special land features, battlements, and river pieces. The cardboard is very thick and nicely done being printed on both sides.

Next the game board , the game board is pretty awesome, it is well made and double sided, one side for a simple 2 player game and the 2nd side designed so it can be combined with another Battlelore board for a huge “epic/overlord” battlefield.

Plastic Parts:

Pieces, lots of little army miniatures. The main pieces are small miniatures with a small hole in the base to affix a banner to distinguish between Ye Olde English and French forces. The primary army miniatures are no larger than the size of your pinky finger, from tip of the pinky to the next knuckle. This in and of itself is amazing when I see people paint these things. Now to the armies.

Main Armies:

Humans: These figures are all gray, gray figure and gray base. The only thing that distinguishes a French soldier from an English soldier is the either the banner the main troop is carrying, or if unit is next to that banner. This makes finding pieces easy, but to purists they may scoff at the lack of originality. I personally like they are the same since most all the pieces are decided by “rank” it makes setting up the board easier.

Goblins: Goblins are gray makeup for the figure but dark green base. These are very easy to pick out of the group if you have a scenario that uses them. They have a few mounted units on lizards that are done very well. The sculpting/casting for the goblins look very well done.

Dwarves: Dwarves look just as you would expect dwarves to, they are gray figures with a brown base. There are not as many dwarf figures in the box as there are goblin figures, they also seem to have a Scottish theme to them.

Banners: Why do I mention these, because this is what you will primarily be looking at when it comes to your troops. The banner color and type decides gameplay of how you move, attack, and retreat. The type of figurine you have is technically for aesthetics as except for the slight distinctions of melee troop type for humans, you could probably get along without ever actually looking at the figure type as long as you have the banner. Luckily the game comes with extra banners, because you will break them.

Monsters: A full hex sized spider, it looks like a mix of spider/arachnid types, of a black widow wolf spider with a wasp's butt. It is still awesome and will freak out people who hate spiders. If you have a spider piece that can give some people the heebie jeebies, mission accomplished.

Extra Plastic

Lore Cups: These are primarily used to hold the cardboard lore pieces to spend to turn the tide of battle in the lore games.

Card holders: nothing fancy here, but more than a generous amount of card holders to keep form having to hold cards in your hand. This will allow you to hold command cards as well as a few “quick reference” cards if you do not yet remember all the rules.

Wooden Parts:

Dice: Yes the game has dice. The dice are all painted and slightly curved corner dice. Even after a few plays the pain is starting to fade. But the fact they are wood and they have their own special icons for the lore, hits, retreats, and banner type hits is a pretty nice touch.

Cardboard Parts:

Terrain Hexes: There are lots of thick double sided terrain hexes that will be told where they need to be place for each specific scenario.

Barriers and fortifications: These are punched out of the same cardboard as the terrain hexes. These smaller cardboard pieces represent battlements and fortifications your armies will have to deal with. These would have been nice as 3-D plastic pieces, but they do have a benefit being cardboard as units can “fight” from atop these battlements and fortifications, and makes placing the units easier.

Class Chits: Battle lore has the incorporation of classes, these classes cause benefits in the lore games to allow you access to certain lore cards for a lower cost, and access to certain terrain types. The level of the class as your War Council is determined by stacking these round chits on that class or monster type in your “tent”.

War Council Tent: This is more to show setup of your War Council with the chits listed above. The sheet is a small doubles sided piece of cardboard of a very thin quality. It is more a reference for your war council on cards to be drawn and class determination. Not necessary to the game, but it helps in presentation and ease of use.

Rule book(s): Rule books, it is actually one rule book and one scenario book. So I will describe the rule book here and the scenario book next. The rule book is beautifully done with lots of picture examples and a great learning setup for transitioning to starter battle to full on lore battles. The 80+ pages is VERY intimidating. But do not be, sections are even color coded to help you along. The reason for the girth of the manual is due to all the pictures in the rule book designed to make the game LESS confusing. Trust me this is a good thing. And besides you read this far for my shoddy review. Reading the rule book is also very natural as it is built like a magazine you would buy off the shelf of a news stand and makes it very easy to lay out and read. It is very well put together, and for 80+ pages it had better be.

Scenario Book: This is a book of how to setup the board for the 10+ scenarios given with the base set. It shows setup for each side, for their troops, war council, and card count. It also shows by picture where to put all the terrain pieces. If you are not familiar with the game this part can take up just as much time as playing the game itself. So feel free to try and play a few times with the same scenario, to save some time. Luckily this is not as think

Gameplay and Setup: I'm going to make this short, genuinely if you want to read about the gameplay check out some of the other reviews, this is about the pieces themselves.

I will tell you for your first couple games, setup can be just as long as the game, because the games play surprisingly fast. Literally I have not had a game take longer than an hour and most have been around 45 minutes. The setup adds a very large length of time to the game in comparison to the game play itself.

Overall I like the feel of the game, it is complicated with the right amount of strategy, tactics, luck , and presentation. But those who want a nice quick game of a fancy miniature wargame with some fantasy and magic thrown in will not be too disappointed. It does take some time to get used to the rules as I feel it plays like Sumo, either get knocked down or get pushed back past your own side. The cards deciding which area of the battle field you can move and act on is an odd feature to get used to. Especially when you have a killer move you could pull off but just to not have the cards to move that section of the battle field or move that amount or type of troop.

Pros, Cons, and Observations:

+ There are a ton of units and pieces. Small and bent, but still awesome.
+ Game board is awesome
+ Rule books are very well illustrated and do well to transition you to learning the full game.
+ Game board is very well made, thick, and durable
+ Quite a few expansions if you want to add to the game.

- Pieces will come out of the box bent and packed in like sardines. It is a very disappointing first feeling.
- There is a steep learning curve to play the full game. But as a plus it does help you learn very well, it just takes time.
- Card stock for cards are a bit flimsy

0 - When you first play setup will seem longer than the actual game play
0 - I recommend following the rules and playing the medieval version before lore versions
0 – Seriously get over the pieces not being perfect, there are a ton of them in the box
0 – You will want to get some sort of storage devices to where you can effectively store armies with their specific types for quicker set up of the game. Best I have been able to do and still fit in the box is using baggies =(
0 – Do not let painting pieces or lack of paint ruin the game for you

Personal Spin: The game is done very well, I am not surprised Days of Wonder originally put out a great game such as this. I have no clue why they sold it to Fantasy Flight games, but the overall quality of the pieces could have been improved, and not the usual DoW quality I expect. I was thrown off a bit when I saw the “days of wonder” label on the front of the box. But look at it this way, it could be worse, they could not put as many pieces in to begin with to cut corners. And if it is such a big deal feel free to go through Amazon or another dealer who will sell the game below list price.

After re-reading I found myself this is great...but. Don't let that dissuade you, but also do not think the game will perfect by any means. Instead think of this as priming you what the imperfections are so when you get the game you know what to expect and can enjoy opening the box and immersing yourself in the giant game that is Battlelore. Remember, I wanred you about the wall of text.

The epic layout is criminally underused, so the SIEGE thing should rectify this.

It could be played easily enough on the standard board though, by just placing the gate, curtain wall, turrets and moat along the 2 northern or southern rows of hexes for a storming the battlements scenario. You might only build more of a castle on the epic layout.

You could also use the standard board edgewise on, nominate 3 new sections lengthwise with markers at each end of the board, and play a narrower battlefield with a lot more depth.

I included trebuchets, balistas and siege towers because they could be used in HYW AND fantasy scenarios, but maybe it should include Cannons for extra choice.

But don't get hung up on HYW timing either. It really doesn't matter if some battles pre-date the HYW to feature siege towers too.

Think outside the box.

My concerns around sieges (especially as BL has the medieval lore rules and has one foot in fantasy and one in history)

-Most sieges are where cities are surrounded and the rules as are really geared up for this
-Sieges would be on a larger scale than base BL
-By the HYW siege towers weren't really used any more
-Go more than 30 years into it and cannons have replaced trebuchets and ballista (there has been some resistance to introducing gunpowder weapons on other threads)
- How to represent sapping and counter sapping (including chemical warfare in the tunnels)
- All sieges would have to be done an epic board as attackers wouldn't place their troops even vaguely near range of defenders ranged weapons.

I'm sure there are other things too

The siege expansion I envisioned would include trebuchets, ballistas, siege towers, castle walls, turrets, gatehoue, drawbridge, keep, stables, armoury, siege tents, fire arrows, boiling oil, tailored siege rules and at least 10 scenarios, including epic layouts.

by ropya

Just thought Id chime in here.
I would love to see an official rule set for both Siege Engines and Campaigns. In the mean time, Ive done up a full fledged bit including both, as well as actual siege rules, and redoing the army setup. Check it out here, and let me know your thoughts.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/451074

Beyond that, the aforementioned Elves would be cool.
And a figure set for each of the Merc groups so that a Merc specific army could be done.
Other elemental breeds: Fire, Wind, Water.
A one I would love: A middle board perhaps, linking the 2 epic boards together. Now wouldnt that be a brawl??

Cheers

Fantasy Flight did a good job at filling that gap for Descent so I'm hopeful that Battlelore might get the same treatment.

I would like to see more historical expansions and less of the comical fantasy stuff but I believe I'm in the minority. Thus I fully expect more fantasy races and monsters to appear. A Siege expansion with early bombards, organ guns, etc. would get my money.

Hi there,

Well if you an cope with home brew take a look at my rules http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/35034 but full on official campaign rules would rock.
I'm in two minds over sieges as they tend to take place over months and involve digging tunnels and counter tunnels, attempts to get supplies and relieving troops in etc and I don't see that sitting along side a days battle as represented in the base game. Perhaps part of the campaign rules..... Hmm I might give this some thought.

Chris

I purchased a plano Tackle box (model # escapes me), then took all the manuels to "Staples" and made color copies of symbols for units, cut out and pasted the symbols to the boxes that slide inside tackle box. I have pictures of it in my boardgaming picture file on Facebook. Feel free to add me as a friend to see.

When I get out of work tonight I'll try to post here and see if they get through for ya. If I remember. They are 2 separate events. It is entirely possible that the archer(s) cannot fire a second time if their only available target is killed or retreats out of range after the first shot.

You can pick a different target for the second shot if there IS one available though.

The good news for you is at that there a quite a lot of threads and pics of storage solutions for this game. For me personally, my solution involved splitting up all of the units into to two craft bead boxes. I also removed both game boards (I have Epic too!) from the box. I own all of the expansion units and was able to fit them all within the two bead boxes and everything else back into the original game box.

I just keep all of it in a big plastic tote. There's no sign that the expansions are going to stop coming and I've heard no plans to do any sort of Memoir'44-style bag (not that the bag has won universal praise anyway).

I've had a similar problem with Heroscape and very single collectible miniatures style game, too. I use totes for Heroscape and Battlelore, Army Transport bags for Axis & Allies miniatures, various sized boxes for Dreamblade, Navia Dratp, A&A War at Sea, LOTR tradeable miniatures, the Memoir'44 bag for that game and piles of original boxes for Axis & Allies and CCA.

Miniatures are nice, but there's really no space-saving way to store/transport them. Every solution I've seen involves something that ends up being pretty bulky.

When you go to wargame miniatures conventions you'll usually see guys carrying around large boxes, planos and their own custom-made suitcases. These guys have been at it for decades and if they haven't found a widely accepted "best practice" then I suspect it's one of those problems with no real solution.

Okay, say I'm shooting at an enemy infantry unit with one of my archers after playing 'Darken the Sky'. I get to shoot twice. I roll the battle dice and get a retreat, then roll for the second attack and get a hit. Does the enemy retreat first, (in which case he might retreat behind another enemy unit, blocking my archer's line of sight) and then spare himself the hit (since he's now hiding/behind cover) or does he take the hit and then retreat?

Help me fellow board game enthusiast!

I love this game and have all the expansions, but for the life of me I cannot determine a good way to store this game in a fashion that makes it easy to play.

My current solution (and I use that term lightly) is to separate all the different units into different plastic containers. However, this creates additional time during the setup and take down. Which might be the best I can do...

STILL, this web site is full of creative people and I'd like to hear from you concerning your storage solutions in use.

Any suggestions, stories, or confessions?

My FLGS has a DOW version on the shelf that I can trade for some magic cards he needs for customers. Are there any noticeable differences between the DOW and FFG version. I know when FFG reprinted talisman they changed the card size. Are there any difference in the card size/stock?

Reply: BattleLore:: Rules:: Re: Goblin Morale and General Morale Question

by toddrew

Not my intention to muddy things here, but I thought DoW did a good job of explaining the Morale concepts, aside from not being more explicit that the three designations of Morale aren't mutually exclusive. It isn't Frightened vs. Normal or Normal vs.Bold, rather there is interplay between Bold and Frightened.

If a unit is of Normal morale it may not ignore a flag and it may not battle back. This distinction isn't really necessary, as it simply means not frightened nor bold, but it is good to have a label for such units.

If a unit is of Frightened morale it retreats two hexes per flag taken and suffers a 1d panic check for each hex taken during a retreat.

If a unit is of Bold morale it may ignore 1 flag for every iteration of bold (support, landmark/terrain, lore play, unit quality) to which a unit is subject. Being bold is also one of the conditions that must be satisfied for a unit to be eligible to Battle Back.

An area that DoW should've been more explicit in (or perhaps didn't completely understand) is that any unit which is able to ignore a flag for any reason is considered bold. Ignoring a flag is synonomous with being bold (the number of flags a unit may ignore being equal to the "degree" which a unit is bold, e.g. a unit that may ignore 3 flags is "bold3").

The fluidity of morale in this game is one of its aspects I enjoy most. It makes for interesting decision making and surprising tactics.

And DOW did a disservice by combiningg the two stages of "normal" so it looked like it was one continuous scale.

But they are just game terms that mean simply "if you are supported, ignore one flag" but "if you have two or more flags, move two hexes per each additional flag."

BOLD is a condition of battle and FRIGHTENED is a condition of retreat.

If you need to rationalize it, think of it like this: they are willing to stick around if they have the numbers (bold from support) but when the lines break, they run twice as fast (frightened retreat). So all bark and no bite.

1 - Yes , you can have BOLD, FRIGHTENED Goblins. Maybe it helps to think of it as 2 separate states ?

Frightened -- Normal.

Normal - Bold - Bold 2 - Bold 3 etc

When those Goblins, who may be Bold, break from Combat - they are going to run like frightened little goblins !

(The problem is that DoW used 'normal' in both) One refers to the combat statew, the other to how they run when broken.

2 and 3 - Yep -Any race / unit can have multiple levels of Bold - it's just easier to get there with Dwarves. Supported Humait on Ramparts can go Bold 2 etc

Hope that helps !

by Galender

	Hey Guys!
New addict to the world of BattleLore here!

I only own the Base game, Epic and Call to Arms, so I have no specialists Goblins or Dwarves. A few things came up recently:

1) Goblins are all by default Frightened. Can they become Bold? Or does it cancel out the Frightened and they become Normal?
Here I'm thinking of the situation where they receive support, or are affected by Terrain/Landmarks and/or Lore Cards.

2) Also, if they are in a position where they would receive two Bonus enhancements, like say, a supported Goblin unit in Ramparts, would it be Bold2? With an addition of a Lore Card, it could become Bold3?

3) I looked around the core book and couldn't find references on how to modify the Goblin's base morale. I assume that only Dwarves can be boosted for multiples levels of Bold, since the only time it is mentioned in the book, it's in the Dwarves section - so I've been playing that even Human units can only ever be Bold1 regardless of how many morale bonuses they benefit from. Is this correct?

Thanks!

edit: spelling
