Definitely messes with the flow, though. The point of the actual system is that every player eventually plays *all* the cards they own, even the ones that make them go backwards.

Playing the other way means that players are just playing their best cards all the time, and ignoring the others.

Thanks guys. I was playing it wrong drawing 3 new cards every turn. Altough, I think it does not mess with the game flow. The only complain are the constant shuffle.

My understanding is that you draw one card to bring your hand back up to 3 cards. You do not discard all the cards and draw 3 again.

If you lose the special treasure card during the round, then you don't draw one on your next turn leaving you with three.

Hope that helps.

Then, the rest of us continued the round and 2 of us reached Port Royal as well, one on the morning action and another on the evening action. The remaining player was way behind, so she did what she had to do but didn't reach Port Royal. Did we play it wrong??

First off, make sure you are resolving battles since they are both on the same space.

Second, yes, this would be a case of not clearly leading or last so it would bet he captain's decision.

I got this at the weekend, I have only one question left (after reading all the other rules posts):

If the Ghost Ship is in joint first place does it have to move backwards or can the captain decide?
(same reversed for joint last place)

In this thread, Sebastien uses the phase "the Ghost Ship is neither clearly leading, nor clearly last" when referring to the Ghost Ship being on the opposite side of an island to another player.

Is this another case of the Ghost Ship's position not being clear and therefore the Captain can decide the direction?

By that, I meant that by mixing the 3 on the 9 cards, you now only have 9 of 12 possible treasures available. The combinations are endless (not really, but there are a lot of possible combinations), and so each game varies depending upon what's there to find!

I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, but using the new treasures as special abilities for each character throughout the game leaves the same treasures that were available previously.

3) Randomness comment
This game is no more a random luckfest than any other game out there. In fact, I think it is quite balanced. You are given 3 choices, and you need to find the one that works best for you. When life deals you lemons, make lemonade. If somebody decides to use 2-12's on a double move because he's so lucky, maybe you have the double gold. Load up! Make him think twice about crossing that finish line! There's more to this game than making it all the way around the island!

Well, there are always choices to make, but I've played more than enough times to know that for some games of Jamaica, it doesn't really matter... the luck will skew one way or the other and someone will win or lose based on that, even though the best possible decisions might have been made. In that sense, this is definitely more of a luckfest than some other games. Doesn't mean I don't love it, even exactly as it is, but that is the nature of the game.

Although I think the "leave things ashore" idea has some merit, I tend to disagree with many of the ideas you guys share. Again, not to be a nay-sayer....but here's my perspective of the negatives.

1) Picking up dumped goods:
Players who trail in "distance" don't necessarily lose ... or come in last. That final leg of the race is treacherous, and can whammy you for food, gold, or both. It creates what seems to be the game deisgners "intnentional log jam" there at the final trasure just before the 7-gold pin...one last chance for players to exchange volleys and exchange treasures.

Also - every game I've played requires shuffling the decks at least once and re-using cards. I've come to find that players tend to even out in both hold and location by about the 4th card of that second round...provided you are making wise decisions and winning at least a fair share of battles.

2) The extra treasure cards.
iving everybody a different oppurtunity at the start might give a bit of variation to the game, but it takes away from the variety of play you will get from game to game. Not to be a nay-sayer, but I think this would ruin the game. Too many peopel would do the same thing, then it woudl come down to (literally) a luck fest on the battle dice.

I think the 3 of 11 choose 1 of 3 works great, making that Morgan's Map a nice find...giving a nice edge to the player who has it.

The Anchor and Sextand from the "Extra Treasures" also come in extremely handy!

by waitsfan

I have to say that I couldn't agree more with the attacker having the benefit. Players should be thinking about other players courses (if that's even possible) and where they plan to stop....realizing someone may land there as well and blast them before they ever have a chance to retaliate.

Also - as far as gunpowder goes...
Soebody above suggests it's their least appreciated commodity. That may be true in your games, but I see it being hoarded and used often in ours. In fact, many a battle have been forced to an "explosion" required, otherwise a forced tie...or forced loss. I've also seen gunpowder stolen on occassion, but not as often as gold or treasure.

The other thing it does is force people to share the load in their holds. If you want to forfeit gunpowder for gold, go right ahead...but be prepared to later forfeit that same gold to the guy who took the gunpowder!!!

This is one of the few games I will readily say is not broken, and needs no fixing. It is a great, light game for 45 minutes of enjoyment....as is.

One thing - if you can get your hands on a copy of the extra treasures...by all means, do so. They do add to the game, and also to the variety of each game. Only using 9 of 12 treasure cards adds a bit of uncertainty as to what the treasure deck will offer!
Helps to keep it interesting.

Which I think also means that in the unlikely event that two players moved backward from Port Royal at the beginning of the game, and then both ended up back at Port Royal at the same time before continuing their full circuit, they would not engage in combat, since that particular space is exempt.

Reply: Jamaica:: Rules:: Re: 2 Player - Can ghost ship end the game?

by darquil

This possibility arose in my first playing last night. We elected to read the end game conditions "As soon as a player reaches Port Royal..." strictly, in the sense that only a player, rather than the Ghost Ship, could trigger the end. I agree with Steven that it seems to be in the spirit of the game that the Ghost Ship is merely a rogue ship, harassing the contestants, and not actually part of the race.
