Reply: Chateau Roquefort :: Reviews:: Re: Raise the roof with your kids...This game is fun!

by Shijuro

Playing with teenagers greatly increases the number of mice that fall into traps as they set up each other for the next player to take them out. It's a very different game at that level, but just as much fun as playing it with my kids (5 and 8).

Good review, you summed this one up quite well.

Review: Chateau Roquefort :: Raise the roof with your kids...This game is fun!

by rantinronrevue

Gaming with my grandson, 5 years old, is always great. Whether playing Candy Land, Parcheesi, Sorry, or Chutes and ladders, it’s always been a great way to have bonding time, even if it meant putting my love for quality games aside for a while (my son bought him ‘Sequence for Kids’, which was much better than the others, but he seldom brings it over). Then for Christmas, after thinking long and hard for the ‘perfect’ game for him, my wife and I decided to buy him ‘Chateau Roquefort’, a game noticeably different than what he’s used to. After playing one game with him, his mom (my daughter) said that it was all that talked about all week! We’ve played it every time he comes over (it’s usually the first thing he asks to do).

When I have to explain the rules to a new player, he gets so excited that he will start spouting out the rules at random (you gotta get four kinds of cheese and you can make someone’s mouse fall into a hole and…and….but you can’t walk on the roof…). I often have to remind him not to interrupt, but it’s great to see the enthusiasm and joy overflowing.

For the child: I’m no child psychologist or any other kind of expert, but his love for this game is easy to understand – it gives him choices to make. No longer is he being told by a card, dice, or spinners what he has to do! It has a memory element (you have to remember where cheese is located when you re-cover them with roof tiles), which almost made us pass up the game because he has the old standard ‘Memory’ game and NEVER wants to play that! It also has a strategy element because you can try to trap other people’s mice by sliding a ‘hole’ tile under them or by sliding cheese tiles closer to yourself or away from others. The goal is simple: gather four different cheese tiles by finding matching pairs of cheeses and moving your mouse onto them. Combine the challenge of memory and strategy with a simple, fun goal and some cute components, and this game is a winner. Though the box recommends ages 6-8, it can be played by younger children because there is no reading involved. But realize that the mice can fit into the mouth of a small child.

For the adults: Adults that have played this with him (his mom, my wife and I, my son and his wife) also like this game a lot. Not only is it wonderful to see a child so motivated and excited about a game, but there is enough here to keep us ‘in the game’ and not just going through the motions. Unlike Candy Land or Chutes and Ladders (the perennial “children’s games”), this game is not just mindlessly moving as instructed by cards or spinners. You have to do some thinking and planning. It’s not Caylus for Kids, but it’s certainly a cut above what you would expect from a game aimed at this age group. (I dare to say that this could act as a great ‘gateway game’ for parents as well as children.) One nice thing is that games usually finish fairly quickly (20 -25 minutes?). We played three games in under an hour the other day.

On the downside, the game can take a bit of time to set up and to put away. You’ll want to be careful with the little ceramic mice, they can be a bit fragile. A tiny nose broke off one of the mice on our first game, but we’ve had no problems since.

Last words: If you have a child (or grandchild or nephew or…well, you get the idea) that you’d like to introduce to the hobby of QUALITY board games, I highly recommend this game as a good starting point. It’s not a cheap game, though you can get a reasonable deal online (I got it for about $30). After having the game for several months, it’s still his favorite, and I can say that the investment was worth every penny.
