Thread: 10 Jahre alea - Schatzkiste:: General:: A couple scans (for illustrated PR)

by kungfro

	Can anyone who has this expansion help me out? I'm working on an updated version of "Illustrated Puerto Rico buildings" and I need a reasonably good quality scan or picture of a couple components so that I can expedite the file:

From San Juan:
-Amtstube (Office)
-Zollamt (Customs)
-Residenz
-Bank
-Hafen (Harbor)

From Puerto Rico:
-Hofgarten (Gardens--there's a picture on it, right?)

I'll give credit to anyone who helps!
my email is chris@crthibodeau.com

Thanks!

Wood4Sheep wrote:
So how do these things work?

Terry Pratchett's Diskworld series is a good read on how those things really work. Particulary the early treatises The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. With Magic being in constant flux, the special powers of 'em enchanted folks are ever changing. And of course you have to be lucky to get hold of the right magic ability when you need it.

Now how does it work in Witch's Brew!? Each round, before selecting the roles, each player chooses one magic ability card (the ability gives an advantage to herself only!). The draft essentially (*) works as follows:
starting player draws the top 3 magic ability cards from the draw pile, keeps one and passes two cards to her left neighbour - who takes those two cards plus one from the draw pile, keeps one and passes two to her left neighbour - etc. The last player "passes" her two discards to the discard pile. Now all players reveal their magig abilities for the round and start picking their role cards.

(*) Note: to speed things up, starting player is dealt 3 cards, and all other player is dealt 1 card. Thus, the other players can already start thinking whether this one card fits their plans for the upcoming round, or may bathe in the agony of their bad luck which will only be enhanced by the two even more useless cards the right neighbour is going to pass for sure.
Ach ja, und whenever the draw pile is exhausted, the discard pile is re-shuffled. Obviously ;)

have fun

Andreas

	Excellent review!
However, I just wonder if I've got the following 2 minor rules correct.

1) About the spell book :

EndersGame wrote:
The current Spell book card is replaced with the next one on the pile at the end of every round of 5 cards played.

Should it be at the end of each set instead?

2) About the end game condition :

EndersGame wrote:
When four of these cards have been earned by players, the game concludes at the end of that round, and the points are totaled.

Same question here. Should it be at the end of that set instead?

Thank you very much for your great effort!

	So how do these things work? Do you get dealt one at the beginning of the game, or is there a new role that lets you buy one, or what?

	From the description of that last one, I would guess that it means that the person gets to take the shelf associated with the begging monk or cutpurse even if the shelf is not completely 'paid for' by the other players being forced to contribute drops or gold nuggets.

I'm fairly new and would like to buy an avatar.

Thanks to previous posters and the Japanese awards for bringing this game to my attention. I can finally contribute something new to my Tues night group that 3-4 people don't already own.

-jd

For each drop I take, I may take a different drop instead.

I am - and remain!
If I say "I am..." and play this card, following players with this role may only say " So be it!"

Charming ones
During the round I can interchange gold with drops .

Brewing master
Whichever brewer I use, I may brew a cauldron of my choice.

One more
Always, if I make a vial/vials, I take another.

Gold Fever
Once, during my turn, take 4 gold.

Vial "Fever"
Immediately take three vials from the supply.

Drip, Drip
Once, during my turn, take any two drops.

Constant Drip
Always if I received drops, give me any additional drop.

Role backwards
Everyone but me plays this round with one role less.

Role forwards
This round I may play with 2 more roles than permitted.

All colors the same
I may use drops as though they were any color.

Favour of the hour
If I lose the "I am..." action, I may immediately take the appropriate "So be it..." action.

Gold pit
Indifferently. Expansion I - 6 Player

Game pieces: 12 role cards(6th player), 5 potion/shelves cards(another "last" Card per pile), 5 Gold Nuggets[6 according to uploaded pics], 6 Ravens

All rules of the original game remain. The following changes/additions (even with less than 6 players) are added:

During setup the five additional potion cards are put under the appropriate five piles and the gold nuggets with the other gold nuggets. Four Ravens(3 to 5 players) or six Ravens(6 players) are laid out beside the other play material in the table center.

A raven token is put from the table center back into the box whenever a player takes a potion card with a raven. In this way all players more easily recognize how many ravens are still available. The play ends at the end of the round in which someone took the last raven from the table center, in a six player game after the sixth raven.

Expansion II - The Amulets

Game pieces: 9 Amulets

This expansion especially increases the tension in a 3 player game and thus the fun. All rules of the original game remain - with following changes/additions:

The nine amulets are distributed evenly during the setup to all players, with the top up(violet) always visible for all fellow players with other starting pieces. With 3 players thus 3 amulets each, with 4 players two each, and one amulet with 5 and 6 players. Remaining amulets are put back in the box.

Amulets can be used as follows: The starting player of a role(the person who first puts it on the table) cancels a role card of a fellow player, the starting player may do this after all players have had a chance to play that role, one amulet and thus retake that role[No, I really am the...] This ability is only open to the starting player, and to each player only once per round. Accordingly, the token remains for the rest of the round with the backside up(grey) lying in front of its owner, to indicate that they used their amulet for this round already. Only at the end of the round are all used amulets put back in the box.

Each unused amulet is scored as two additional gold nuggets.

[] = my comments

-jd
Alea gave up the rights for the game, and thus allowed ProLudo to publish a new version including the two-player rules and variant.

It makes sense for RGG to include as much as they can for the games available in their catalogue.

 According to the Funagain website, the Treasure Chest (as it is being called) will consist of thirteen expansions for seven games. This includes two that do not appear to be in the German edition, namely the Muse & Princess and the 2-player rules, both for the Princes of Florence. If this is true, then it seems like an even better collection than the original!

	The Governor visit is just like a regular role selection, so all bonuses from your buildings apply. If you didn't select a role this round already, Library would also apply to this new role.*

* You get two actions in one round in 2p only. So this note is for 2p.

	For the Governor Visit, do any buildings that work with the re-selected role still work?

For example, if the Builder is chosen for the Governor Visit, do the Poor House, Carpenter, Quarry, Smithy, Crane still apply? Does the player selecting the role (the one who triggered the event), still get the bonus, i.e., building for -1 cost? What about the Library? Would the owner of a Library who picks the role get the doubled bonus?

Wishful thinking on my part :shake:
I would be grateful to know if someone has tried a two player variant....the artful cards are so gorgeous and the mixture of potions etc is a fabulous idea that I know I will miss out if this is not possible.:soblue:

Kind regards,
Gordon

	When you sell a good, you never take the card on the production building as part of your income into your hand. You always discard it, and draw new card(s) for your hand, depending on the price.

If you have the harbour, instead of discarding it, you place one goods card under the harbour. So the harbour gives you +1 point each time you sell one or more goods, without affecting your income.

	The funcation of Harbor said: The owner of a Harbor will always, when he is selling goods during a Trader phase, place one of these Goods cards (without looking at the front) under his Harbor. (Each card is worth 1 VP at the end of the game).

Hence, does it mean that when I sell a product(e.g. Indigo), I should keep 1 card (the ONLY 1 income) under the Harhor and then NO card received anymore?) OR I can receive 1 card as income and take ANOTHER card under the Harhor as 1 point?

If the the first possibility was the answer, Harbor seems to be so weak...(Chapel is more convenient in using by the similar function...)
Conversely, if the later option was the answer, Harbor is a very good building for Producer and Trader Strategy.

Thank you for the answering and opinion sharing.

	In 2p, there is only ever 1 building of each type, so yes, it IS poweful. I guess your opponent didn't pay enough attention to what's going on. After I got the Villa, my wife took the Garden. The Jeweller wasn't of much help at that time as I could use it only twice. My wife had 2 quarries and the new building that gave her 2 doubloons discount on Large Buildings, so we both got 2 of them handily.

So, I easily bought a garden and got 18 vp's at game end. I only produced Corn and still won handily, with all the large buildings I was able to buy.

Gardens itself gives you 1VP for each nobleman you have, essentially making them worth 2VP each.

Now, back when I was playing with these buildings before I had any solid rules, I had two theories about how noblemen entered play: either by the Villa only, or one per mayor phase, plus the villa. I disregarded the latter theory, because it made the Jeweler and Gardens far too strong. The former theory seemed quite well balanced.

Whoops; the theory I disregarded turned out to be the correct one. Guess that makes the Jeweler a hot item :(

A forest isn't considered a plantation, is it?

In the ORIGINAL version, they are.
The Rio Grande version added some weird looking Forest tiles that are not part of the original design. All Plantation tiles are born with a green 'Forest' back side. So when you take a face-down Plantation tile, you must put it face up in your display unless you have a manned Forest House, in which case you may decide to place it face down as a Forest.
It would not allow you to take a Quarry, as that isn't a Plantation tile.

So two players with Hunting Seats can never both receive 2 VP in the same settler phase?
Looks like it. So I guess there will a competition for placing Colonists on the Seat - in order to remove Plantation tiles in one round and then a Nobleman in the next to score the points before it is too late. :cool:

Can a Nobleman be sacrificed using the Black Market?

No, a Nobleman is not a Colonist. He is just arriving on the same ship.

So they don't count for the Fortress either, I assume?

Actually I was wrong here.
I never bothered to read the new German rules for the first expansion as I already had those buildings (in two languages).

However the new rules actually say (with tiny letters) that all original buildings that talk about 'colonists' works with 'Noblemen' as well.

So Buildings like the Black Market and the Fortress do actually work with Noblemen as well.

Worther such buildings can actually be activated by a Nobleman, I don't know. I assume so, but it could also be fun if Noblemen were 'above' such manual labor. I will ask Stefan Brück for a ruling.

However, that would mean that all 5 roles will selected in rounds without any event cards, so I would still suggest adding a second Prospector - or any other of the roles available for the variant.

I have played the new expansion with 6 players, where we added 1 of each basic purple building and 2 of each Production building except the Indigo Plant, which had 4 cards added.

	I bought this game several months back and for a couple of months now my six year old daughter and I have been playing it together. While it isn't designed to be a two player game, we've managed to adapt quite nicely and since she is an early reader it gives her the opportunity to figure it out on her own at a slower pace. The only disadvantage to playing with only two is that she will take the full action of the card every chance she gets, so she often kicks my butt at this game!

I wanted to thank you for your excellent review of this game. I thought there were a few things we were doing wrong, but as it turns out, we weren't! I had not been able to find any reference to what the purpose of the potion vials were beyond collecting them and had arbitrarily assigned them a one point value on my own. I don't know how or where I missed this in the instructions, but will go back and read them again.

Even though my daughter is under the suggested player age, it has been a fun way to introduce her to the world of board games and I look forward to playing some more with her in the future!

If you (or anyone else on here) can recommend any other games she might like, I'd appreciate it also! Her reading skills have improved immensely, so that would not be a concern. (I'm almost considering Settlers of Catan, which I bought for my brother at Xmas but just played for the first time myself the other day. )

A forest isn't considered a plantation, is it? Likewise, using a nobleman, can you sell a quarry or forest instead of a plantation?

When and how are the 2 VPs awarded to a player with the Hunting Seat? That is--are they given the VPs at the beginning or end of the settler phase; and does the player have to have the fewest plantation spaces used up, or can s/he be tied for fewest?

The points are awarded at the END of the Settlers phase, but only if the player CLEARLY has the most empty plantation spaces.

So two players with Hunting Seats can never both receive 2 VP in the same settler phase?

Can a Nobleman be sacrificed using the Black Market?

No, a Nobleman is not a Colonist. He is just arriving on the same ship.

So they don't count for the Fortress either, I assume?

Maybe someone should translate the rules...

That would be good. I've got the noblemen and the buildings (printed), and am anxious to use some of them.

Does the ship just not get stocked for the rest of the game, or does it get stocked exclusively with noblemen?

The rules doesn't say. But they do say that the Nobleman is usually taken by the Mayor himself - and given each Noble is 1 VP, and cannot see why he wouldn't take it. Also, with 120 men available for the Colonist ship, I don't think the game would outlast the men for long.

There is no rule that allow a player to take a Nobleman instead of a Colonist except for that one Nobleman aboard the first 20 ships. If you want one you will have to take the Mayor or own a Villa :)

Can a Nobleman be sacrificed using the Black Market?

<strike>No, a Nobleman is not a Colonist. See below

Does the Villa grant you an extra noblemen in addition to the colonists you receive, or does it just allow you to turn one of your received colonists into a nobleman?
The Villa grant you a Nobleman from the supply - not from the ship.

Maybe someone should translate the rules...

It sounds like an expansion you easily could create by yourself.

Thread: 10 Jahre alea - Schatzkiste:: Rules:: SAN JUAN - the Event Cards

by Great Dane

	Game materials: 6 playing cards (six different "Events")

Game Preparations: the six Event cards are shuffled into the deck with the Buildings cards. All other rules remain the same as in the original game - with the following changes/additions:

Game play: Every time an Event appears (whether whend ealing cards at the beginning of the game, during the Councillor phase, when selling Goods, Prospecting, when activating Buildings, triggering Events etc.! etc.!) is the Event card immediately placed face up next to the Role cards, and a new card is drawn as replacement. To clarify: An Event card could be lying in many places (for example in the draw or discard pile, as a Good on a Building or under the Habour, face up on the table etc.), but it can never at any time be in the hand of a player.

A face up Event card may be triggered by any player instead of activating a Role (even during the round it was revealed). In that case it will be activated as stated below. Afterwards the Event card is discarded (so an Event may appear several times per game).
Note: Buildings (like the Library) has never any influence upon the outcome of an Event.

THE EVENTS:

Erdbeben = EARTHQUAKE
Each player (incl. the "activator") must demolish one his own buildings (ie. discard). Any cards beneath the building (Goods, VP's) are also discarded.

Schuldenerlass = DEPT RELIEF
Beginning with the "activator", each player in turn order adds 3 cards to his hand.

Steuern = TAX
Each player except the "activator" must, in turn order, discard one card of his choice (if any) from his hand.

Generalamnestie = GENERAL AMNESTY
Beginning with the "activator" each player may discard any number of cards from his hand and refill his hand with the same number of new cards.

Gouveneursbesuch = GOVENOR VISIT
The player selecting this card may activate (for everybody!) any Role card already activated earlier this round (as if it hadn't been selected yet).
In this way it may be possible, for example, to build twice during the same round. Should a player thus build his 12th building will the game end as usual.

Wiederaufbau = RECONSTRUCTION
Beginning with the "activator", each player in turn order may build any one Building in his hand - without cost! - thus simply placing it in his display, as long as the Building cost on the card is no greater than 4.
Hint: 1) Other Buildings cannot give any advantage to this Event (like the Inn). 2) All normal building rules apply. 3)The game ends if a player builds his 12th building.

Thread: 10 Jahre alea - Schatzkiste:: Rules:: SAN JUAN - the New Buildings

by Great Dane

	Game components: 31 playing cards (26 purple buildings + 5 Production buildings, 1 cardboard card ("Cathedral")

Game Preparations: The 31 new cards are shuffled into the deck. The Cathedral is placed on the table near the Role cards. Otherwise are all rules the same as in the original game - with the following additions:

Amtsstube = COUNTY OFFICE
At the beginning of each round, the owner may discard 1 or 2 cards from his hand to draw the same number of new cards from the deck.
(The order of activating cards at the beginning of a round is: 1. County Office - 2. Chapel/Bank - 3. Guard House/Tower.)

Wachstube = GUARD HOUSE
At the beginning of each round, the Governor must check that each player without a Guard House has a hand of max. 6 cards. Owners of a Guard House may still have hand of 7 cards. Owners of a Tower (with or without a Guard House) may still have a hand of 12 cards.

Schenke = INN
If the owner of an Inn has the fewest Buildings (purple and Production buildings) on the table (as usual after the phase in which it was built) in front of him (ie. no-one has fewer and at least one other player has more Buildings), then he draws 1 card from the deck.

Park = PARK
When using a Crane to overbuild, the Park counts as having a building cost of 6 instead of the printed 3.
Example: Player A overbuilds his Park with a Library; he pays nothing for this. Player B overbuilds his Park with the Cathedral (cost 7), for which he pays 1 card.

Zollamt = CUSTOMS OFFICE
At the beginning of the Councillor phase each owner of a Customs Office may take 1 card and place it (without looking at the front) as a Good on his Customs Office. When sold during a Trader phase, the player receives 2 cards from the deck (regardless of Trading Post cards).
Hint: 1) Normal rules apply for this good (ie. max. 1 good card per Customs Office; the good may be exchanged for 1 money using the Black Market; it may be used together with the Market Stand and the Market Hall etc.) 2) Even when only goods from Customs Offices are sold must a Trading House tile be revealed.

Bank = BANK
One time only during the entire game may the owner of a Bank, at the beginning of any round, even before the Gouvenor checks the hand limit, place any number (even all) of cards from his hand under his Bank. (Each card is worth 1 VP at the end of the game).
Hint: 1) The text or Victory Points on the cards themselves have no relevance. 2) The player does not have to tell his fellow players which cards, or how many cards, he is plcing under the Bank. 3) The cards stays under the Bank even when overbuilt.

Hafen = HABOUR
The owner of a Habour will always, when he is selling goods during a Trader phase, place one of these Goods cards (without looking at the front) under his Habour. (Each card is worth 1 VP at the end of the game).
See Bank for further hints.

Goldschmiede = GOLDSMITH
The owner of a Goldsmith will reveal the top card of the deck at the begining of a Prospector phase: if it is Building (purle or Production) no-one has built yet (incl. himself), he may add the card to his hand, otherwise it is discarded.

Residenz = RESIDENCE
At the end of the game, the owner of a Residence score points for each group of three different Buildings with the same building cost in his display: 4 VP for the first group, 3 Vp for the second group etc.
Example: The player has built the following 11 buildings: Indigo (1), Indigo (1), Suggar (2), Black Market (2), Well (2), Tobacco (3), Tobacco (3), Aquaduct (3), Palace (6), Guild Hall (6), Residence (6): he scores 4 + 3 VP for the Residence (for the three different 2's and the three different 6's; the three 3's yields no points as there are two Tobaccos).

Kathedrale = CATHEDRAL
The Cathedral is laid open during setup. It may be built by the first player willing to pay the cost during a Builder phase (as usual that player may not build anything else this turn). At the end of the game the Cathedral will score for each value 6 Buildings owned by his opponents: 4 Vp for the first, 3 VP for the second etc.
Example: The opponents of the owner of the Cathedral has built 2x Guild Hall and City Halls plus 1x Residence and Palace for which the Cathedral owner scores 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 0 + 0 VP

The Land Register apparently allows for the purchase of an additional plantation if occupied by a colonist, or the sale of a plantation if occupied by a nobleman. Is this correct? Not even sure about the Hunting Seat, It appears that is earns victory points during the settler phase based on having a large undeveloped area. Huh?

Yeah, they seem strange. I don't know anything about the specifics, but it looks like Land Register is a good way to get more plantations if you need them (Residence, maybe Cloister) and to sell them if you don't need them (3rd Coffee, unused Forest maybe, and Hunting Seat).

Yes, the Hunting Seat looks like it's a benefit to players who don't make use of all those plantations they feel obligated to get throughout the game. Players with a building strategy that includes only producing a couple high-selling items will find the Hunting Seat attractive. You have to balance your gain of VPs with your benefit to lay more plantations, it seems.

But I'm speaking from assumption largely.

What do they do, and how significantly do they affect the game?

My seven year old daughter loves this game, and loves expansions, so this is a must-buy for me, if for no other reason that for expanding ItYofD. Corrupt usually means that the file was damaged as you uploaded it and didn't appear as it should - often distorted in some way, partially missing or completly missing.

I'm not sure about the irrelevant tag though. Try resubmitting - you will have different mods and mostly likely not have a problem.
I still have one curious question: what's the 'gimmick' for Puerto Rico? Alea mentioned it on their website: "Für San Juan wie auch Puerto Rico wird es neben neuen Gebäuden auch noch je einen weiteren "Gimmick" geben." In this thread we are still guessing, but you have the box on table. Witch's Brew is simply a fun game. It's light and accessible for non-gamers, but it requires some strategy to read your opponents and determine what cards they're likely to play. And the mechanism of declaring roles leads to a lot of non-malicious "screw you" situations that can create a lot of laughs.

So, on this third expansion, if I'm understanding correctly, every player chooses a new special ability each round? Would you mind translating what the other magic abilities are?

	The third witch's brew expansion:

This expansion makes the role cards more attractive and enhances the planning capability of the players.

17 magic ability cards

At the beginning of the game, the 17 cards are shuffled and placed face down in a pile in the middle of the table.

At the beginning of every round, before the players choose their role card, they all receive a magic ability card: the starting player draws 3 cards, the other players draw 1 card each. The players read their cards, but keep them hidden from the others. Then, the starting player places 1 of his 3 cards face down in front of him. He gives the other 2 cards to the player on his left, who also chooses one of his now 3 cards, and gives the other 2 to the player on his left, and so on.

After the last player has chosen his magic ability card, he places the other 2 cards face up, but without showing them to the others, under the draw pile. (As soon as the first face up card is drawn when drawing new cards, the pile is shuffled and placed face down again, after which the drawing continues.)

After every player has chosen a magic ability card, the starting player reveals his card and reads it aloud. After all this the normal game play begins: every player chooses his role card, the starting player plays the first role card, and so on.

The are 3 different kinds of magic ability cards:
- 3 cards that start to work at the beginning of a round (even before the role card selecting). These cards are placed face up under the draw pile after being used.
examples:
Drinking potions. I take 3 small potions from the supply right away.
Role forward. During this round I am allowed to have 2 extra role cards in my hand.

- 3 cards that can only be used once during the whole round, at the latest at the end of the round. These cards are also placed face up under the draw pile after being used.
examples:
Gold rush. Once during my turn I will take 4 gold.
Drop drop. Once during my turn I will take 2 extra ingredients.

- 11 cards that can be used more than once during the round. These are placed face up under the draw pile at the end of the round, whether they have been used or not.
examples:
Gold mine. Whatever I make, I will not have to pay any gold.
Gold-like ingredients. During this round I can use ingredients as gold, and gold as ingredients.
Brew master. I can use whichever kettle I choose, no matter with which person I brew.

I must say, the 3 expansions make me curious about the original game :).
How do you all like the game, and do you think these expansions will enhance it a lot?

So are you going to keep all the bits together in their original box or will you put each expansion with its parent game? Not sure what I'd do. How often do you (or anyone) think the expansions will get played? The Notre Dame for instance seems like you'd include it most times, as does the ITYOFTD one. I'm not sure about the others though.

Hi Andreas

Pictures aren't declined by a "system", but by users through a peer review process called GeekMod. Any picture submitted for a game, designer, or publisher is automatically run through this before being accepted or declined. You can have a look at how it works by going to "Misc -> GeekMod" in the main menu. People who vote to reject an image have to select a reason, which is then included in the message you get.

To help you it would be helpful if you could provide some examples of the images in question, incl. the reasons given for rejection.

Rio Grande editions have the exact same insert as alea editions.
And while some inserts (like Wyatt Earp are made especially for the game, others re-use inserts from other games (like Alea Iacta Est, which uses the insert from Louis XIV).

This is simply a matter of money. Alea has a very small budget, so if too much money is spent on materials, something else will have to suffer.

I think Alea does a good job with all its inserts, especially compared to some other publishers out there (*cough*Queen*cough*). And the Louis insert is damn good - all the cards slide in sideways so elegantly. Sorry to take issue, but I love me a well done insert more than anything. :D

I have the german version, perhaps it has a different insert? :surprise:

Maybe that's it - mine is by way of Rio Grande. I've got the German version of Wyatt Earp, which also has a very snug little insert, so I just assumed the good inserts were Alea's doing.

When you get a chance, can you share more about the Witch's Brew expansions?

The first expansion makes the game 6-player.
It has 12 role cards, 5 potion cards (a new last card for every card pile), 5 gold chips, and 6 raven chips.

The 5 extra potion cards are placed under the corresponding 5 card piles, and the gold chips are added to the other gold chips. 4 ravens (in a 3-5 player game) or 6 ravens (in a 6 player game) are placed in the middle of the table.

Whenever a player takes a potion card with a raven on it, 1 raven is removed from the table. In this way the players can see how many ravens are still in the game. The game ends at the end of the round in which the last raven is taken.

The second expansion makes the 3 player game more interesting. It has 9 amulet chips.

The 9 amulets are divided among the players (3 player game: 3 per player, 4 player game: 2 per player, 5 or 6 player game: 1 per player).
The players place the amulets face up in front of them.

If a player plays a role card and another player blocks it, the first player may unblock the card with an amulet, after all the players have commented on the role (not sure how to translate it since I don't know the game).
Only the player who played the role card may use the amulet, and he can only use 1 amulet per round. After using an amulet, it is turned face down, and after a round all the used amulets are removed from the game.

At the end of the game every unused amulet is scored as 2 ingredients/goldchips in case of ties.

I will take a look at the third expansion tomorrow, since that one is rather long :).
The players also receive 1 extra influence marker from the general supply and places it on one of the 4 action fields on his player tile.

This is what's on the tiles:
1. Phase: supplies
Discard an amount of influence cards and draw a same amount of new cards.
2. Phase: influence
While jumping you can also jump to a diagonal table.
3. Phase: utilization
When you use an Intrige card, you may add 2 markers from the general supply to your own supply.
4. Phase: mission
You can take up to 3 mission chips into the next round.

(phases 1 and 4 have more explanation in the rules)

After every phase a player, when it is his turn, can activate the chosen option (once), by taking the influence marker from his table and putting it into his own supply and then executing the option.

At the end of the game a player receives 1 coat-of-arm for every 2 influence markers on his player tile, with a max of 2.

"and 1 tile that is placed opposite the table that has the Louis XIV tile on it"

You didn't mention this part in your wonderful explanation. Can you enlighten us please??

Thanks!

My apologies :).

The new "minion" tile is used in the first supplies phase.
The rules say:

After the top gold card is displayed and the Louis XIV tile is placed on the board, the minion tile is placed on the table that is opposite the table with the Louis XIV tile in the inner cross (if for example Louis is on table 3, the guenstling is put on table 1).

After that every player, going left from startplayer, before he gets his 5 influence cards, can put as many of his influence markers that are on his player tile as he wants back in his own supply. But, that means that the corresponding actions arenn't activated!

I hope this is clear enough :).

Every pile is shuffled seperately, and from every pile 3 cards are drawn so every player can see them. After that the 3 revealed cards from every pile are shuffled again and then put in one pile like in the original game, with the A cards on top and the C cards at the bottom.

The A cards:
Verwalter (bailiff/steward), double your prestige points.
Gelehrten (scholar/professor?), play your third action card right away.
Krankenschwester (nurse), take one of your influence markers out of the general supply, put it in your hospital and put a rat marker back one field.

B cards:
Spion (spy), look through the grey persons pile without changing the order and receive 2 prestige points.
Fahrende volk (sailors?), you may take a number of your influence markers off the board and put them back in the general supply, you get 2 prestige points for every marker.
Kutscher (coachman), you can use one ability from your collected messagemarkers? again.

C cards:
Wird (host), receive 2 prestige points for every influence marker in your guest house.
Torwachter (gatekeeper), receive 3 prestige points for every 2 influence markers in the general supply.
Ratsherren (councilmen), you may bribe 2 more times (bribe a different person 2 times, or 2 different persons 1 time).

Translated information from maaike fest (who has apparently received a copy of the expansion - huzzuh!).
I think the Sailors/Gatekeeper combination can lead to some interesting gameplay (positive), but I also think it could lead to analysis paralysis (negative). I usually don't take more than a couple minutes on any given move in Notre Dame, but I feel with these cards I might find myself compelled to do some counting and recounting to squeeze out a few more prestige points. One of my favorite aspects of Notre Dame is the fact that it is a game with many strategies and it definitely makes you think, but the choices are still limited (you usually have 3 or so choices every action you take) that the game still flows smoothly.

I do find it cute how the Gatekeeper makes it so that it might actually be profitable to be ravaged by the rats (as that may put an even number of cubes in your general supply) in anticipation of the card coming out; after all, you only lose 2 points a turn to rats, and you might gain 3 points through Gatekeeper.

~

I think the Spy would be much stronger if the players didn't know what cards were in the game to begin with, but it is plenty strong as it is. I don't really think this card will add TOO much analyzing in the game; if anything, it should make a strategy more clear-cut. My biggest complaint here is that it almost guarantees a situation where somebody will forget the order of the cards and will ask to look again a turn or two afterwards.

~

I am VERY excited about the Host; the Guest House is just plain the weakest of all the boroughs. I have never heard anybody ever claim to play a "Guest House Strategy." (At least not anybody I would deem competitive.) I feel this card will force players to at least re-value the Guest House. Now it might actually be worth it to stick 3 cubes in the Guest House so (i) you can get 6+ PP from the Host, (ii) add 3+ PP with the Mayor (aka Bürgermeister Maesterburger), and (iii) get 1+ PP from the Carpenter. Heck, maybe it will behoove you to stick a whole bunch of cubes in the Guest House if you're playing with the Lady-in-Waiting. I really like how this card gives you a completely new option for the Minstrel that one would not normally even consider.

~

Worst card in the bunch to me is definitely the Coachman. I mean really: YUCK. The Landlady is clearly superior in pretty much every way possible. The only message I could only really justify ever using this for would be a 4-PP message, but... bleah. This would make a decent Brown card (that you see every round) but I'm not feeling it is a Grey card. It's just not that all special to me. If I end up buying the expansion, I might have to conveniently "lose" this card or simply make up an ability that seems better to me.

Thanks

Well, it's mostly San Juan and Witches Brew that are not language independant.

In San Juan there is text on the cards, like on the cards for the base game.
In the first expansion there are 10 different new cards (26 purple buildings and 5 production buildings in total) and a purple Cathedral tile.
And in the second expansion there are 6 event cards that can be activated if you draw them, like the normale roles, they have some text on them as well.
But the text on all of the cards is short and easy, so a cheat sheet should solve this problem.

Witches Brew has 3 different expansions. The first has 12 role cards, those have quite a lot of text on them, and 5 potion cards, 5 gold counters and 6 raven counters, those are all language independant.
The second expansion has 9 amulet counters. The third expansion has 17 magic ability cards, those have some text, but much less than the role cards.

The Notre Dame and In the year of the dragon expansions are 100% language independant.

The first Puerto Rico expansion has 12 different small buildings (each twice) and 2 different large purple buildings.
The second expansion has 7 different buildings (each twice) and 1 large building.
All buildings have some text on them like the normal buildings, but a cheat sheet should work here as well.
The second expansion also has 20 red "nobles", that act like colonists.

The Louis XIV expansion has 4 player tiles with action fields on them and 1 minion tile that is placed opposite the table that has the Louis XIV tile on it. The player tiles have text on them, but can easily be replaced by a translated version.

I will look at everything more closely today and edit this message if
necessary :).

All in all, I think there are enough language independant expansions for english-speaking people to enjoy, and for some others you can easily rectify it with cheat sheets :). I think it's a really good set, and with a total of 11 different expansions I think it is really worth the money!
