I just bought a battle box of them yesterday. I can't really compare to the last series, since these are the first I've purchased.

Having recently picked up Bakugan, I was a bit unimpressed with the rules and how vague they really where. That, and how only 2 gate cards are on the table at one time make for a pretty unimpressive game.

My initial thoughts on a variant would be a kinda of "take and protect" kind of game. There would be four gate cards on the table (Two from each player) set in a diamond formation with about a foot between cards. Players would have 6 bakugan, and 6 ability cards.

The idea would be to take control of 3 of the 4 gate cards. Gate cards are left on the table after battle, with the winner keeping their bakugan on the card.

I'm sure I'm missing a lot here, but that's the basic idea. I'll post more when I flesh it out.

Best of luck. Heck, I find them really fun, and I'm a philosophy professor. Then again, there is a non-zero possibility that your four-year-old's tastes are more refined than mine.

He can definitely handle what numbers are larger than others. I may have to pickup some starters this weekend and give it a shot.

If it fails miserably, at least he'll have the marbles! :)

Can he handle something like 350 is bigger than 250? If so, he should be just fine if you dispense with the "element"-type rules. If not, he should be fine if you dispense with all the rules and just play with really cool transforming marbles!

There's addition (e.g., like 350 + 200). You could do that, or you could leave it out if you wanted.

You could make it easy and do it more like bowling by just claiming a card when a bakugan stops on it, too.

Anyone playing this with a 4 year old? It seems simple enough, and the toy aspect of it is something I think my son would really enjoy (my daughter would love it also, but she's not even 3 yet!)

Is this something he can handle?
