Wish there was someone playing around here. They fly off the shelves but its all collectors, no gamers.

Yeah I don't mind the delay at all - still collecting Spoils of War and the play environment is pretty strong at my local store.

Reply: World of Warcraft Miniatures Game:: Reviews:: Re: World of Warcraft mini's – Monitor Swag or a quick fix during the WoW maintenance window.

by Ouktaar

I agree with a lot in your review. Actually, I don't really disagree with anything you said, but wanted to acknowledge two things you mentioned.

First, the Clock/Tick system is excellent. Having played a large number of miniatures games, I have to say that I haven't seen anything else quite like it. I am always interested in the how melee plays versus ranged. Usually range has quite an advantage due to the extra time it takes for melee to close the gap, but the Tick system for WoW Minis really makes it a much more level playing field. Attacking from range will generally tick a character up 3 or 4 clock spots where as the melee toon that is just moving to get into range will only tick up 1 clock spot and thus get a follow-up act much sooner. This allows melee characters to close rather rapidly after the ranged character has done his opening shot.

Second, the difference between the Deluxe and Basic starters is fairly drastic in my mind. I agree completely that the Deluxe actually feels like a real game, the Basic is almost a mini game that is not meant to be played with any additions (boosters). Here's why:

-I am a bit offended that the Basic starter doesn't even include a full set of rules. Hunter/Lock pets, Shaman totems, and Druid forms aren't even mentioned as you don't get any of those types of abilities with the 4 models in the Basic starter. I know that the full rules are online (as well as included in the Deluxe starter). Maybe I am a bit old fashioned, but I feel the full rules should be included in any version of the game.

-The Basic starter comes with a "mini" map printed on lightweight paper that is noticably smaller than the heavy cardboard map that comes with the Deluxe. This has a significant impact on how the game plays as range and the re-spawn mechanic have a much different feel when there is more room to work/more ground to cover.

-The rules refer to things like counters, buffs, and debuffs. Pets and totems are also represented by these things. The Basic starter gives no support for these mechanics so you are stuck using proxies. The Deluxe has a number of cardbord chits to aid these mechanics in addition to extra map tiles to customize the map in a number of different ways.

About the only thing that makes the Basic starter worthwhile is the exclusive figures. These figures are not gamebreaking. The cards the come with are not unique to them, each and every card comes with at least one other figure that you can pull from the normal boosters. But for those wanting variety but not wanting to break the bank, the Basic starter is a guaranteed way to pick up 4 figures that won't duplicate anything you will pull from the few boosters you might buy.

That said, it is a good game, and if anyone is reading reviews on it, then they obviously have some interest. Yeah, it has it's flaws, but if you are already here, you should give it a shot.

Add: I forgot to mention one thing I love about the game. Successes generally occur anytime you roll a 4+ on a D10. With a 70% success ratio, it takes a lot of the luck out of the game and makes your tactical decisions feel a bit more important. Compare to games like Heroclix where you generally need an 8+ on 2d6, and this game is certainly a lot less random.
