This is one of those objects people wonder if location means location as in the circular ones or your location, which could be street or OW as well as standard location. Of course it would open up the Milk + OW type of crap, so probably why FFG just put down location. Time Bomb from KiY for example is worded "location or street area".

What's really rough is when two DY wind up on the move together (through monster surge or Milk of Shub). They always seem to block the most important street at any given moment. Beating one is hard enough, but that second is usually a deal breaker.

I like them stationary when I seal the gate and can sneak past with Silver Key, and I like them to move when they get out of the way when my characters don't have the magical weapons to defeat them and can then enter a gate to the Other World.

Also had a game where five of the six DY came out by mythos three (one on each gate and two of the three added two monsters to x street, one of which was a DY both times.).

Brian

I've gotten 2 shots at getting Cult Membership after adding IH (6 games now). Arkham Location decks are 31 cards each now (35 for people with KH to boot). Even joined on the second time I drew it.

Try using the BG herald. Every time you kill a hex monster, you draw a corruption card. One of the corruption cards requires one of the investigators to join the cult or the owning player loses an item.

The thing about the cult membership that I've found, though, is that a character doesn't usually obtain one until those locations are either sealed or devoid of clues.

I think I've only had a cult encounter once.

Brian

There is a green corruption card titled Primal Surge that says: "You may move any of your investigator skill sliders a total of 3 stops. All other Investigator must move a skill slider 1 stop."

Does this mean you just move your skill slider now during Mythos phase, or does this mean your prevented from moving it that many spaces, or what?

Reply: Arkham Horror - The Black Goat of the Woods Expansion:: Reviews:: Re: BGotW - Review

We played several times only with the base game and this expansion. With two investigators we fin it too difficult because of the Black Goat Herald. It makes the doom track go up very fast.

We only won the first time by closing gates, but we were abnormally lucky. I played Mandy Thompson and my wife Kate Winthrop. I began with +1 Lore and an Elder Sign and Sara began with +1 Sneak and the Military Motocycle. First I sealed the Woods with clues and Sara sealed Independence Square. Then I entered The Unnamable to seal it with the Elder Sign it closed itself in the first encounter there. As no other gate was opened we fulfilled the victory conditions.

The other games were quick defeats.

We also tried twice the 3rd scenario of the second Arkham League which involves BGotW and some Dunwich Horror parts. We played with six investigators. We lost both times by reaching the maximum number of open gates without having a chance of winning.

I run the all-but-KH combo myself (well and no IH yet). Cult Membership is only hard if you don't use the BGotW Herald. With it, you should get one pretty much every game (most of the time multiples). If you can't handle the heat (aka the Herald), you could nerf him (no doomer for surge seems what some people play).

Not my recommendation naturally :shake: . Gimme the full-bore BGotW Herald :goo: .

Ok, we all know its quite hard to get into the cult, especially if you are using all the expansions at once. for that reason i am interested in house rules to make joining the cult easier. I am thinking of a varient in which you are allowed to throw one dice if you are in the woods, in the cave or on the forgotten island. If you roll a 5 or 6, you are allowed to join the cult. Do you think, this will work out, having in mind i am using all the expansions except KH at once?

AH + BGotW, each neighborhood has 11 encounter cards (I think 1 card has the Cult Membership offer). With my combo of everything but KH, I have 1 in 24 chance of drawing that Cult Membership encounter at one of those 3 locations. KH would add another 4 (for a total of 28, if my maths are correct) cards per Arkham neighborhood.

I think one of those 2 came from Corruption cards, the other from drawing a Cult Membership encounter, I wanna say at the Woods. With the Herald, I think the Cult Membership ratio was 10 in 12 games. Probably all through Corruption cards.

Even if it sees less activity these days, it's still 5 extra possible unstable locations. Sometimes you can't reach that board in time to stop things happening there.

Good tips. Yes, I've played KiY without the Herald, but that was when I was using Dunwich with everything. I've been dropping Dunwich these days to try and maximize the chances of getting more of the "local" flavor of the small box expansions. KiY is next, and then CotDP.

You are right that A-N didn't come in the base game! I should have been more specific and said that I removed all the base game Mythos and Gate cards. I left the monsters, GOOs, characters, and equipment alone (meaning, that they include all items from Dunwich and Kingsport, not from the small box ones).

I consider the modularity of AH a great thing, but sometimes it just frustrates me. Doesn't stop me from playing cause I love me some AH.

When using the BGotW Herald, doesn't really matter what combination you're using, you should see plenty of corruption cards around, which often lead to Cult Membership, which means you can then take Cult Encounters at the locations you mentioned. On a side note, do you have KiY? Have you played that without the Herald?

So, I have just finished playing 3 solo games (3 investigators) with just the base game and the Black Goat of the Woods expansion. I tend to play just a few expansions at a time for theming purposes.

Not once - not once! - did I ever come in contact with the cult, or the corruption cards, or any of it. I should note that I did not play with the Black Goat Herald, since I was trying to beat Atlach-Natcha and she's (it's?) hard enough as it is.

I'm not someone who reads all of the available encounters before playing since I liked to be surprised, but I did know that the way to meet the cult is by adventuring in the Woods, the Unvisited Isle, and the Black Cave. The problem is that there are quite often gates on these locations - making them inaccessible. Also, they are not safe places at all to just "adventure away!", from my playing of all the other expansions.

I was a little bit disappointed that my attempt to "theme" my game Black Goat didn't end up "Goaty" at all.
