We have special cards that call for adding a "Worm" card to the pile- but our rule is if the Judge picks it, only the Judge loses a point (to encourage the Judge to pick something appropriate to the green card, and also prevent the Judge from throwing it just to make someone close to winning lose a point).

You have a hand of red cards (nouns) and the judge turns over a green card (adjective). Also, you get seven red cards.

Good review. I bought this game for my wife last year and we’ve had lots of fun with it. A few things that I should note, however:

1.	Another problem area is when you play an intergenerational game. My son and daughter-in-law, my wife’s Dad, and my wife and I played a few games together. While my father-in-law was clueless about Britney Spears, the young folk were just a clueless about John Wayne. Though it’s not a big problem, it can slow the game down.
2.	Like most party games, this game can wear out its welcome very quickly if you play it too often. This happened to us because several different groups wanted to play it. And it is VERY frustrating when a couple of people in a group feel like playing something meaty but get outvoted by A2A fanatics.
3.	You may want to keep the cards that you’ve used separate from the ones you haven’t, especially if you play the game regularly. We often would get some cards that showed up on several different nights, which really wears out the novelty of the game.

Other than that, I have to agree that it’s a better-than-average “party game”. In a category where mediocre games seem to be the norm, this is one that stands out.
Review: Apples to Apples:: Playable for the masses

by tired

Apples to Apples is a party board game that will suit families and friends. In Apples to Apples, players have to compare adjectives to a noun each round. The judge (the player who drew the noun) decides which adjective card played is the most similar in their opinion, thus creating moments of hilarity.

Appearance: Appearance described here is for the Apples to Apples Party Box which is what it states exactly. A large box with inserts filled with red noun cards and green adjective cards. There is sufficient space in the inserts for additional expansions, a nice little addition.

As for the cards - well, there’s nothing to say. We get noun cards and adjective cards with the bare bones of art work and an explanation of the word. Actually, I will add this - the explanation on noun cards aren’t always the only one’s available and while a definite plus for those who have problems with the English language, can sometimes be annoying for everyone else who begin to argue if ‘that’s the right use of the word’.

Rules / Ease of Learning: Players get five (5) adjective cards. Each turn, a new player draws a noun card. The remaining players must match the noun card as closely as possible using one (1) of the five (5) adjective cards they have in hand. The player who drew the noun card chooses the most similar adjective card in his opinion. He awards the player of the adjective card with the noun card and the game continues. The game ends when a player wins a specific number (this number varies by number of players) of noun cards.

That’s it. Easy to learn isn’t it? Yup, you can teach this game in 5 minutes. 2 if you talk really fast.

Actual Gameplay: There aren’t many bad things to say about Apples to Apples - it does exactly what it needs to do for a party game. Its easy to learn, gets people talking and is fun to play.

So what are the bad points? Any player who knows the majority of the other players will do better than others. As the player who draws the noun is the judge of ‘best’ match, knowing both the judge and his quirks (play it straight or go for the funny?) is a definite advantage.

Also, the draw of cards is purely random, so the only strategic decision on cards is which cards to hold for a potential player / card combination.

Lastly, be careful about introducing this game to players who are either immigrants or have issues with English. The first might not get all the cultural references, while the second group (who potentially include the first) will have a hard time matching nouns and adjectives together. A careful combing of cards might solve this problem, but this rather defeats the purpose of a quick ‘pick-up’ party game. Admittedly, there might be some use as a teaching tool - I’ll let the actual teachers speak on that subject.

Conclusion: This is a great party game, one that is nearly certain to be enjoyed by most non-board gaming groups. It’s an easy game to pull out and one that can easily taught. I definitely rate this game highly for the fun factor for large parties of non-gamers.

Tao
Starlit Citadel
