I thought I heard that the guy doing the art for these was stuck on Tales of the Arabian Nights. Now that that is finished, presumably he will get on to these. Maybe after Endeavor?

Game production is far from an exact science, but it would be nice to know if progress is being made.

I really like the idea of combining the Dragon expansion and the Water expansion. We've waited long enough, why not reward us with two at once?

Reply: Prophecy:: General:: Re: It is possible to use Talisman Characters with this game?

by Harv

All Prophecy characters have one of three stat configurations:

3 Strength
6 Magic

4 Strength
4 Magic

5 Strength
2 Magic

1 Strength is equivalent in value to 2 Magic. In the game, you tend to earn points in both at the same rate, i.e. you tend to gain 1 Strength point or 2 Magic points at a time.

I know that Talisman uses Strength and Magic, at starting levels of between 1 and 6 points. I can't recall details about how you gain points in them.

I suspect that Talisman characters would certainly work for Prophecy, but they wouldn't be balanced. Also, you would have to assign Guilds to them so they can take advantage of the Ability cards.

If you really want some new characters for Prophecy, you can always check my homebrews in the files section! They are balanced (oh yes they are). :ninja:

That way if someone had an item that you wanted you could go beat them up and take it.

The designers know. From the offical rules pdf at http://www.zmangames.com/:

Winning a Battle with a Character
Regardless of the type of battle, the results are the same. The losing player can choose what happens to her character. She can either lose 1 Health, or she offers her Items to the winner, who can take any one Item (including an Artifact). If the loser decides to offer an Item, she cannot change her mind when she sees which Item she will lose. If the losing player has no Items, then she must lose a Health.

Usually it is not such an advantage to attack another character, because the loser will choose to lose Health instead of an Item. An exception to this is if an opponent is seriously wounded and cannot afford to lose any Health, or while using some Abilities from Thieves’ Guild. Otherwise, it typically does not make sense to attack other characters in the early stages of the game. Battles between characters are much more useful during the Final Battle (explained later).

Prophecy seems to discourage PvP combat, which in my opinion is a good thing. There is already competition for the various resources on the board. Making playerkill a viable option would hand the most tanked-out player too much of an advantage. Personally, we never play with the Final Battle ending, and declare the player who collects the most Artefacts the winner. But then we're librarians, so what do you expect.
I thought is was the winner that chooses.

It makes little difference to the way we play it because we just go for Artifacts and not fight each other. IMHO,fighting between players becomes quite tedious and spoils the game flow.

Regards.
A very simple variant we found to work well is this: even if a player loses to a monster, the card is turn down. That way, the other players cannot always remember which monsters are the easiest to fight and may refrain from heading in that direction via portals, boat etc to face the easier ones.
The obvious caveat is that if you draw a chance card that tells you to add a card on, for example: a Plain region, but there are already two cards on each Plain region...you discard that card because the maximum number of cards for each region is two.
I hope I remembered that right ;) Seems ages since I played this game, but it was only last week
Regards

I agree with what Mikecl just said. Don't get stuck on a monster that is too tough for you or you can easily waste several turns. Just move on and head for better opportunities around the board. I think it is a very worthy game that has improved on Talisman by an exponential amount. I enjoyed my 2 or 3 plays of it, although it can run long. You can decrease the win condition if you want a shorter game.

Try it again!

I had made a homebrew version of Talisman 3rd edition prior to knowing about this game. I love Talisman as a whole but find it lacking in character progression.

I was looking to get either this or Runebound. I found a variant to use the Runebound character deck talents like Prophecy has the training, but I was curious if I can use Talisman characters in this game.

If so I would rather get this game since it's an "advanced talisman".

As Mark says, and you can only have two per area with the oldest being removed (put on bottom of appropriate draw pile) when a new one is placed (due to chance card being drawn).

by firewizard

Note that some cards allow a player to take more than one turn.

The rules state that each player has one game round in which:
1. Draw a Chance card
2. Player's turn (turns)
3. End or Round

Note that step 2 is singular player, possibly plural turns.

This confused me for some time as 'normally' players have one turn each and a game round is once every player has had their one turn.

What I'm trying to point out is the you only draw a chance card once, even if you are taking multiple turns.

Especially since the max # of cards on a space is two. And as players get stronger, cards don't last as long, so the board actually starts to empty.

That's how we played last night but I thought that we could be playing wrong because the chance cards run out so quick and the board gets realy cluttered with cards. So just to clarify....If we're playing 4 players, I go first and draw a chance card then finish my move than the next player draws a card and does there move...ect? So there will be three more chance cards turned over before I get to move again?

by Kanachi

I think that though the chance cards do potentially help those at the back of the pack they don’t always... It’s quite possible that the player in the lead could meet the requirements to profit from such cards. Players also have no knowledge of when such cards are going to be draw, if you’re not the player with the least X at that very moment in the game you don’t benefit.

I think my main problem with the game is that there is no reliable mechanic to ensure that those at the back of the pack can catch up. I've seen a few games where one player spends several rounds at the start of the game with bad luck (loosing health and missing out on rewards) while the another player is more fortunate and zips around amassing a great many items and killing monsters in their sleep.

A game like Kingsburg has a system built in "every round the player with the least X gets a bonus". Such bonuses are guaranteed to go to the player who is losing and therefore helps stabilise any runaway leader issues. This is not the case in Prophecy.

Even ganging up on a powerful character can be a waste of time as by the time you and any other willing players have moved into position to strike you are extensively outclassed. A wise leading player will also undoubtedly have some method of out manoeuvring you on the board (which they were more likely to be able to acquire through the constant stream of gold and experience they acquire simply by being the dominant force) therefore making the entire gambit folly.

I play this one all the time with the Lady, and we've never experienced a runaway leader problem.
The luck of the draw might favour one player over another for a bit, but I find the point-to-point movement, and the fact that most of the cards are face up, it's a lot easier to mitigate bad luck by picking your fights, and being able to move where you want, rather than where you have to.

I think the player who's falling behind needs to make more reasonable choices as where to move, and they just need to choose their fights better.
I haven't found too many runaway leaders problem because many of the Chance cards favor the one with fewer of a certain resource, which helps, which helps. Maybe the player who was behind should have worked harder to get the good luck clover. ;)

Seriously, I haven't played this game tons of times, so maybe I'd notice more of what you said if I did. I'm curious to know what others say.
HIya everyone, we've played a few versions of this using the shorter variant (first person to win 2 artifacts) and though we enjoyed the game we found that there are serious run away leader problems in the game. Bad luck at the start of the game can ruin you. The real problem is that as the game goes on things just seem to snowball more and more in the favor of the person who is in the lead.

Has anyone else had this problem? do you have an ideas how to fix it?

- kanachi

I tried to get hold of a copy today, the geek seems very positive, as I've been looking at it for some time. My local games store sadly informed me it's out of print until Z-Man reissue before they publish the expansions. As they understand the core game returns to the channel in about a month and the expansions towards the end of the year.

Could be the original Czech version, a print 'n' play English prototype, or a full English version. Does anyone have the inside scoop?

I have to say, just the thought that there may be complete English editions out there is making my weapon flame with excitement.
