I would like to get the rules to several of my games translated into Indonesian. Can anyone help? I'm willing to pay in games or cash.

Wow. I soooo wish I could help you with this. I'm all for getting game information into as many formats and lanuages as possible.

Alas, I'm barely literate in one language, let alone proficient in others. Best of luck!

Indonesia does not have an actual language. The Indonesian Republics are very diverse and multi-cultured. An unusual form of Malay is spoken in many places, speckled heavily with Cantonese and English. In many places Minangkabau and Javanese are prevalent, and in the South Eastern areas, Indo-French and French-Jouni are the most common. To pierce the almost unfathomable layers of language dialects throughout the Republic would be a task almost, oh forget it. I’m just joking.

Hi Alan,

This is Lawrence. I am both a native speaker of English and Malay, which is 85-90% similar to Indonesian. In any case I have many Indonesian friends who can do a once-over for the draft. I am also a game designer like yourself since December last year, with 3 games completed & submitted to German companies. Perhaps we can help each other out. I consider it an honor to help you out here.

My email is : buylower2003@yahoo.com
Phone is : (65)91261890
You can write to me directly.

I just can't believe my eyes mr Alan R Moon asked that question !!

Well, I was born and live until now in Indonesia. So if I have the time , I think I can help you (the Indonesian language is rather close to Malaysian language, but still have a lot of differences)

FYI : I have made my own free games ( www.geocities.com/islandofd), and tried my best to make the clearest rulebook I can. (I've never translated rules until now, but I can try).

hmmm... about board games hobby in Indonesia, I think it is still very - very small. I have very few friends who sometimes play with me, but not very often (that's why it is easier for me to make solitaire games).

:)

Hi Alan,

I'm a native Indonesian speaker, though I've been living in Australia for quite a while and thus my `formal' Indonesian is a just a wee bit rusty. I'll certainly give it a try though.

Yes we DO have our own language, dagnabbit :), with its own grammar and lexicon. However, after studying Latin (what delightful precision!) for 3 yrs and speaking and writing proper English for 8 yrs (another language I find beautifully precise and demanding), I realised that the majority of Indonesians write with distressing disregard of correct grammar. I would truly relish the challenge of translating your rules into proper Indonesian.

Yeah the state of gaming in Indonesia is rather sad. Boardgaming is often considered not only `nerdy', but also `childish' (although I think there's a small group of dedicated Warhammer/40K players in Jakarta). Last time I went home (about 5 months ago) I took Roborally, YINSH, Friedrich, M'44, and Bonaparte at Marengo with me to play with my brother, family, and friends. They were all well received (especially YINSH, due to its deceptive simplicity and language independence), except for BaM (at least it plays ok solitaire!). One evening, 3 friends came over, all `civilians' (non-gamers :)), but I introduced them to YINSH, Roborally, and Friedrich, in that order. We started playing Friedrich around midnight (rules explanation took a bit more than 5 mins) and they all really got into it. We stopped at 1 am only because everyone was tired and it was a weeknight, but it was very well received and I probably would've lost to the Russian player. They asked me to bring it again next time I go home. Felt good to have won some converts :D.

Hi Alan,

I'm a native Indonesian, living in Singapore and active in the local boardgame scene here, and a part-time freelance translator.

I'd be interested in translating board games. Do email me at sonicrick78@gmail.com to discuss more, or let me know how I can contact you.

Cheers,
Ricky

Alan, I'm from Malaysia but I do have some friends from Indonesia who would be willing to help. The schools here in Malaysia teach Malay as our national language so everyone here speaks Malay fluently. The Malaysian Malay is almost similar to Indonesian Malay (with some different words but with essentially the same meaning like bisa (suka) for example). But on the whole, Indonesians can understand malaysian malay and vice versa. If you still need help, message me. :)

Hi Marcus,

Thank-you for responding. I've been amazed at the number of people who have responded. In fact, I've already gotten translations for four of my games and another person is now checking all those. I'll keep your name if something else comes up.

Best Wishes,
Alan

Hi Mr. Alan,

Me and my wife are boardgamer here in Indonesia, and it will be an honor to assist you generating the translation or to check the translation.

We are currently working on the Indonesian translation of your Elfenland to be posted here on BGG. Elfenland is one of our favourite (it's actually my wife's number one).

The first Indonesian translation that we made was for Bohnanza, and posted here on BGG: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/fileinfo/19810

Best Regards,
Dede
