So there are 17 words. Or 2 or 3 per most lines. So what?

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Look at the prime words (2, 3, 5, ...)

As in if=2, these=5 ? Did that. Got garbage like the others.

I found the words that were "prime" by counting their order... so 2, 3, 5, 11, 13, 17. Then took the number of letters in the prime words and used the number to find the equivelent alphabetic letter. I got edgbedi...which gives absolutely nothing. I've also tried using the first letter of the prime words... still nothing.

edit: didn't mean to include 4 in there... and I have a math degree! ah, go figure

Your method is correct except your applying the numbers to the wrong "key".

Okay, got it, but I don't see how step one was to be deduced from the puzzle itself. I got it from info here only.

I am not going to spoil this, but telling people that a certain number is or is not prime is not really salt. It is math.

You are right, however in the context of his answer, where I had originally included his unintentional salt, the fact that he had missed a particular letter was the salt, not the fact that the number itself was prime.

Off to bed - g'nite

Go with the words. That's step one, now think about that sentence for part two.
