Spoiler (click to reveal)
excel helps a lot also

10: I asked my local bishop. He's a pretty square guy, but I can always count on him.
25: First step: Count.
38: Don't make me get cross with you, DrParty06.
49: It is not where the bishop starts, it is a move it can make.

Count what? Where?

I've
Spoiler (click to reveal)
set up Excel with my chessboard.

Bishops move diagonally. Rooks move forward/backward/left/right. Pawns move forward and occasionally diagonally. Knights do the L-thing. Queens can move in any direction. Kings too.

Bishops, Queens, Rooks move count depends on where they are. Pawns are 1 except their first move which could be two. Kings one.

Someone hit me over the head w/ a salt lick please.

Okay
Now you have set up a chessboard
Some subtle Salt
Spoiler (click to reveal)
What have you put on your chessboard (besides chess pieces)?

Spoiler (click to reveal)
If you haven't put anything else on your chessboard - try finding something to put on it.

I've
Spoiler (click to reveal)
put the numbers 8 through 1 on the left and right and the letters a - h on the top and bottom. I also have all my pieces with their corresponding letter R = Rook, etc. So the black King is at d8
Still no idea where to move or how to count, etc.

Originally I googled the quote and found out the term was gambit. I thought 'bad gambit' - but that's in a WHOLE different direction - more of a rebus.

Thanks Pb for help.

Well, I have set up a chessboard and filled it
Spoiler (click to reveal)
with the text of the puzzle (64 letters was kind of suggestive to me), and tried various things, even substituting a P for an R on a diagonal from one of the two 'b's in the puzzle, and examining the columns B A and D in various configurations.

I think I am still missing something. Any more ideas to help me?

Listen to the Beatles Revolution 9 and then look at the puzzle (forget about any chess references). The song will give you the answer TOO many times

Thanks Pb. Once again, you're my savior.

I kept starting in the wrong spot. It wasn't until I leaned back in my chair that it came into focus.

Louis - what the heck are you talking about brother?!?! I'm a huge Beatles fan and I don't rightly recall hearing the answer in that song {although you got me to try the words: Number, Nine, Turn, me, on, dead, man, deadman}

I'll havta find that one tonite and give it a spin.

EDIT: Would you believe I was only 113th?!?!

Any last salt for someone hoping to get this done before 10? I have the layout but the bishop isn't speaking to me apparently!

I'll give you a simple puzzle:

NQUZMIBJEKRPNXIQNVE

Now take that answer and apply the same principal to the puzzle. That's why I said the chessboard was irrelevant.

Ugh I'm hating this new puzzle. My brother and I hunted down the schools, conferences, states, and we still have nothing.

EDIT: Got it. If anyone needs salt let me know.

Once again, I find that the "easy" one isn't so easy. The suggestions my wife is making as to the possibilities is pretty funny though.

Anyone got a nudge? Sharry (my wife) says that there's no reason to have 2 pairs of jeans, since one jeans is still plural. Good point.

Got nothing though.

The "easy" puzzle was submitted by me. The word does have to do with the text in an abstract way. This puzzle is actually much easier than people might think, but the word is not common.

I can salt if anyone needs.

Only a handful have solved it in twelve hours, I would say a little salt for the rest of us is definitely needed!

Finally got it!

If only Simon and Garfunkel would come up with some more material. It'd make sense if only my digestive track would get out this darn burrito. Then it'd all make sense.
