Ram doesn't work.

I guess you need a different kind of help:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
it's not a ram,
because it doesn't eat ham.
but it's crossed a moat,
in a boat,
wearing a coat

Based on two three of the answers, I'm convinced that the answers to the bottom are
Spoiler (click to reveal)
card games.

I still need to get the others, and then figure out the top clue.

Mike K. is correct. I managed to get all but clue #5. The one that gave away the theme for me was:

#3. There aren't many film dog names that work well with wordplay. "Lassie", "Benji", "Rin Tin Tin", not so much. But if you do a lot of crossword puzzles, you know Asta from The Thin Man.

Actually, Bagheera and Tami, I think they were going for the chemistry connection on clue number 5. It just happens to be a chemistry connection that fits the rest of the theme.

I've got all of the clues now, but I'm not quite sure what to do with them yet.

Massive spoilers ahoy!

Spoiler (click to reveal)
The clue answers are all card games. So ask yourself the following...

#1: What card game describes someone who never got married?
#2: What card game describes a type of diamond jewelry?
#3: I'll just tell you this one straight out. "Is film dog capable?" = "Can Asta?"
#4: What type of card game describes a pump that everyone has? It's much more important than a shoe, and it doesn't pump water....
#5: Not sure about this one. I think the "blind rodent" part points to the number 3, from "Three Blind Mice".
#6: What type of card game is Omaha?
