I got the easy, but not the hard...

Any salt for the easy one then? the two salty clues for the hard above got it for me.

The hard salt does nothing for me...

I only have the opportunity to dig into these once or twice a week, so applying customary interpretation doesn't do a lot for me. I think I'll have to stop staring at this one and just buy "UTSOTD" and try to snag "ROTH" when is pops up next.

Stupid question: Why the reference to salt in relation to hints?

Leadfoot has a FAQ on the subject, but the short answer is that someone once accidentally put the answer to one of the puzzles into the comment section instead of the answer box. The answer was "salt" and that started it.

And whenever I post, I usually figure it out, but I'm drawing a bloody blank here.
