I spoke with Filosofia today and they were kind enough to answer some of my questions in regards to a possible reprint.
This is all not offical, and can be considered rumor, even though it was from Filosofia.
- They will be producing it in 2007 - They are working on it now - They are looking to the spring to release news on the Chinatown release date
- They are looking at creating a language independant version of the game!
Again, this is considered rumor only, and with permission from a Filosofia representative to post this information.
It is coming......

Of course, what many of us really want is one that matches the rest of our big box series

Wasn't it already language independent?
While reading this post, I thought that someone had already announced this, as the company name sounded familiar. Here's the thread:

But thanks for the additional info!

The game was pretty language independant as is, except the cards. So I guess their changing that.
I got the company info indirectly from that post your refering to. The last post for that was Oct 2/06. So I figured it was a good time for an update and deceided to call them myself to inquire.

Please note though that it's still worth while to post in the existing thread, even if it's just a link to your new thread, so it will trigger BGG to notify everyone who is "subscribed" to the existing thread.
Luckily I found this new thread indirectly via Eric's post on BGN.

I love this game. This is great news for all of the people who want to play it but don't want to spend grail prices to get it.

Filosofia mentionned this reprint in an interview with belgian magazine Plato. From what I gathered, it is still in the pipe. I've heard the mechanics will be identical to the original game. (At some point, there were rumours regarding changes in the mechanics.)

Dear all,
Yes, a relaunch of Chinatown is in our "workshop"
The game will be published in several languages including English, French and German in separate boxes.
New illustrations, new format and a few surprises...
Until then !

The current Chinatown is almost language indepedent itself, except for the small deck of special cards, which could be made language neutral.

i'm glad to hear that the game will apparently not employ language-neutral cards, and hope this doesn't change.
i find that in all but the simplest cases, legends still need to be consulted during the game. especially when it hasn't hit the table for a while.

Sophie didn't say the components would be language dependent, just that the packaging (box and rules) would be. As for components the only cards with language dependent text are the bonus cards, I forget the exact number but it's like only 10 or 12 of them. The cheat sheet cards can be double sided with different language on each side. See image below.
Printing different versions of the bonus cards, and boxes, and associated labor, is just going to make it more expensive than it needs to be. Note that the text on the bonus cards is so minor you could even fit on each card 3 different languages.
In any case, it's great news to hear progress is being made on a reprint!

i assumed it from both posts: the separate boxes declaration, and your comment that the special cards "could be made language neutral". perhaps that was in error, but my sentiment remains the same.

well, there are several games that i already own for which i would have paid more money in order to receive english-specific versions. i don't expect everyone to hold that perspective, but i think "more expensive than it needs to be" is still a relative concept. i didn't buy the settlers of catan 10th anniversary edition, but i'm sure plenty of others did.

agreed. i'll be looking into it regardless of how it's released language-wise.

Thank you all for your encouragement ! I only meant that the English speaking market will have an English only box and rule and so will the German market. No multilingual boxes in sight !
Kind regards,
sophie
