Tropical Games (my new design company) will produce a new Railroad Tycoon game in the coming months. There are two options:

a) Work with Funagain to reprint the original Railroad Tycoon (fixing the warp and blue/purple issues).

or

b) Publish a new version of the game (Railroad Tycoon 2) that would include:

* A smaller gameboard (probably 36" x 30") with less wasted space.

* A map that created more competition (fewer cities)

* Fine tune the Operations cards

The timing of this new edition would certainly be sometime between Fall 2007 and Spring 2008.

Oh, forgot to mention. There will also be 3 new map expansions available on the launch of the game. I am currently thinking:

1) Europe 1830 - 1914

2) Great Britain 1830 - 1900

3) Africa 1860 - 1914

4) Mars 1880

I'd like to play an Africa expansion for Railroad Tycoon but I imagine a Europe or GB map expansion would fare better commercially.

My vote still goes for africa.

Thank god I was too lazy to get up and grab my credit card... I paid with paypal, which takes a week to get approved so I was able to cancel the order.

I like option B and would purchase expansion boards.

These new maps will be size compatible with your original RRT game, correct?

Don't forget Mayfair's announced railroad game with Martin Wallace, which is neither RRT or AoS.

I'm excited about a 2nd RRT, but I really hope any expansions release are compatable with RRT 1st edition owners.

Seconded. I have never had the Blue/Purple city qualm, and I don't live in the rainforest, or leave my board out overnight, so board warping wasn't a problem. I love my original copy.

Hey Tom,

The new game won't be out for a while! It also won't have the giant map that's in the original (which is lots of fun for 5-6 players). Owning the original will probably also have some collectable value.

No question that the new boards/ scenarios will be fully compatable with the original game. Absolutely!

I LOVE railroad games, so seeing a game like this announced is great. Please do not do option A and just a straight reprint of the original. Option B is superior.

I prefer Great Britain and Europe to the other expansions. Mars would not interest me at all (I assume this is the planet Mars, upon which there are currently no railroad tracks or cities as far as I know). I'd be interested in Africa as well, not as much as the first two, but certainly more than Mars.

Between the crayon rails games, 18xx games, and age of steam expansions, I think every square inch of land on Earth has been covered. I think, however, you could make a good expansion with SE Asia and Japan. I'd certainly want to play that.

Good luck with the game.

Hooray for the expansion boards! I don't care what areas/eras they cover, so long as they're compatible with the original version of the game. I'm glad to hear "more competitive" also, since I'd like more competitive play with fewer players; it's hard to get a crowd of four-to-six together.

Although I have to ask.... Mars? I880?!

I'm thinking he's thinking steampunk. Ever see the Space 1889 roleplaying game?

I'd buy a Mars version. And Africa sounds good to me as well.

Just a playful idea I had to do an H.G. Wells-ian expansion.

Congrats on getting started again in the board game business! RRT is a great game, it was sad to see Eagle disappear.

Since I own the 1st edition, I'd like to see option (a) made, but in the expansions, work on tuning the operations cards, etc. But if I didn't have the 1st edition, I'd rather see option (b) made...which means it may be a better business decision for you.

PS - Please don't tell my wife about this. I convinced her that buying RRT was a smart thing to do by telling her that it was out of print, the company was gone, and I had to buy it now or lose it forever. If she hears that it's being reprinted in another year or so, I'll have some serious explaining to do. blush

Let's see I have to buy the new Age of Steam reprint in 2008 and buy the Mayfair Age of Steam in 2007 and Railroad Tycoon 2 in 2008. This is just wonderful...I'll begin saving now.

I prefer option B to reduce just a tad the luck element and make the western link cheaper. Smaller map would be a huge boon too.
