Even with the seemingly low interest in the subject I decided to create a petition - you can sign it at
http://www.petitiononline.com/36s45pf6/petition.html
The sleeper must awaken! You can make a difference!
Thanks
P.S. Please spead the word.
P.P.S. If you signed, it would be nice if you leave a message here as well.
Update:
We will also need an e-mail address to send the petition (link) and a letter to.
So far (thanks to steamrunner) I've found this address on Brian Herberts homepage ( www.dunenovels.com):
business@dunenovels.com - it seems to be the best choice.

As for making a difference or not - how will we know if we don't even try?

Honestly, you'd have a much better chance - still not much of one, but definitely a better chance - organizing a letter writing campaign. Email just isn't nearly so impressive as piles and piles of actual, physical mail.
Hmm, does anyone have a genuine mailing address to send such mail to?

I signed it. I think the game would be fine with another theme, but this is a case where the theme is really so beautifully intertwined with the game mechanisms that it would be a shame to see the two seperated.

Actually, wouldn't more signatures for the petition be a sign of a higher demand for the Dune theme, thereby raising Mr. Herbert's asking price for said theme (at least not lowering it), ultimately making it even more costly for FFG to acquire said theme?

From the interviews and links to the Dune page run by his son, it didn't seem to be a matter of money. It sounded more like it was unavaialble, period. So I am not sure how much help it will do but I signed it as well. Good luck with that!

Didn't someone post a link to a "Dune FAQ" somewhere that said that the game rights are still held by the sci-fi channel as part of the deal to make the miniseries?

I'm no lawyer, but it doesn't sound plausible. A miniseries is not the same as a board game. Why would FFG say they tried all they can and were denied?
By the way do you always need a guarantee (which in itself is impossible) for success to try and do something?
We have a very slim chance if any – but hell – we’ll see what happens!
At least we can say we tried it.
