As a proud owner of the beautiful 40th Anniversary edition, I am wondering what Hasbro is planning for its 50th Anniversary edition due out in 2009.
The game business being what it is, they must be pretty close to design decisions being finalized etc. so they can have a 2008 holiday season product ready for the store shelves.
Remembering how valuable my 40th edition version is I will probably pick up multiple 50th anniversary copies - if they make it really cool.

I would guess the "Game Company Edition". Continents are replaced by game genres (e.g., RPGs, miniatures, boardgames) and countries by individual game companies. Players win by taking over all other corporations.

Maybe a 3d version??? That would be pretty interesting to see pulled off.

Every copy that I've ever seen is 3D. It would be really interesting if they could defy the laws of physics and release a 2D version of the game.

I haven't heard a peep about a 50th anniversary edition. Maybe they're giving 50 a pass and waiting for 100?

I got the following response from Hasbro when I submitted this question (go figure):
============================================== Subject Risk 50th Anniversary Edition?
Customer 10/22/2008 02:15 PM Hi, are there any plans for a 50th anniversary edition of Risk? Response 10/23/2008 11:35 AM Hi Mark,
Thank you for your interest in Hasbro, Inc.
Since many revisions may occur prior to a product release, information, such as release dates, possible new items and where to buy future products, is not available in advance for distribution.
We ask that you visit our web site at http://www.hasbro.com often for the most current product information.
We appreciate your understanding and your interest. ================================================
Well, at least they were fairly quick to respond. I can't imagine that they're not planning something. I saw a TV advertisement last night on cable for the "new, quicker RISK," though - I wonder if they're pushing that for their holiday RISK player market. Maybe they'll wait until January or later for the 2009 edition (although that doesn't seem smart to me).

This is it, I believe: Risk (Revised Edition) although they don't denote it as one of their "50th anniversary" editions like they have with Diplomacy and Axis & Allies. It is revamped and does play quicker and more cut-throat than the old Risk. Based on a couple of playings, I would say it is better with 4 or 5 players than 3. It is a pretty good little game, and take about an hour or so to play - much better than those old tedious marathon sessions back in the day!

You may be right but I hope you're wrong, because a new, faster risk with plastic arrows as pieces is hardly a worthy 50th anniversary edition.
I was thinking of something comparable to the 40th edition, with metal pieces and leather pouches and a nice board. I can't imagine that they don't have something in the works, unless risk board game sales are way down, or if the 40th edition sold poorly...

For the 50th Anniversary Edition, my prediction is the new system (with original rules included) and new pieces depicting Modern Infantry, M-1 Tanks and B-52s for the 1, 3 and 5-army denominations, respectively.
Oh, well, might as well come clean: that's not my prediction, more like my pipedream. This is what I was hoping for in the New Revised Standard Edition. Instead they have these horrid little arrows.
I'm holding off on the new edition for a few years until they reissue it with "new" bits.
With my luck it will be cave men and brontosauruses.
