When Battlelore came out a year ago, it was one of the most anticipated games for me, and for many others. After I secured by copy of the game, I have played many games with various people. I rated it a 10, and I still stand by that rating. However, it seems that the game has lost some of its impetus in the last half year. Although there have been a bunch of expansions, I didn't have the feeling they changed the game that much. Sure, they give some extra options, they give some variation in the mini's, but for example creatures are much more of a special element in the game than, say, dwarves which axes that reroll one bonus hit, or spear bearers that roll an extra die when battling back. The expansions just don't create the freshness that you would expect. Sure, you can now fill out your goblin or dwarf army, but that is more an issue for the passionate collector than a boost to gameplay.
I hope DOW will come out with some new stuff soon, for example the long awaited "Guest" spot, or Heroes, or some interesting new creatures, or a new race with radically different abilities. The initial promise of the game was to appeal to all the people who have shelved D&D, an recreate the fantasy world feeling. I don't have the feeling this promise is fulfilled yet.

People are feeling this way because the obvious :
They can do much more with this system, and they haven't.

7 expansions and they only have dwarves, goblins, and some weapons?

AFAICT, people were expecting undead, elves, other mythical creatures, and the like. There IS a reason why this game was called the "fantasy" version of Memoir '44.

Why are they so real-world based? I think people want the fantastic.... and DoW has just made the mundane so far.
I could easily be wrong about that, though....

I'm looking forward to more settling related stuff, & the Heroes expansion. I think these elements will set Battlelore on the right path for the next few years.

I look to 2008 with anticipation and excitement in this regard.

Cheers,

Giles.

More monsters!!! One giant, one elemental and one big spider doth not a fantasy setting make.

I agree, there has been some bad marketing moves here by DoW. Monsters, siege weapons, armies of the undead, elves, centaurs, etc... They would be printing their own money.

My only complaint is that they seemed to drop the ball, and thus their marketing momentum, on heroes. I was pumped on BattleLore last year, played 40+ times. I was all ready for heroes, and instead I got nothin'. Big disappointment.

Does it need a spark? Of course it does. And it is designed to continually need sparks.

Maybe I have too many other games to tend to but I am still exploring BattleLore and not tired of it yet. I assume we will see Heroes towards the end of the 1st quarter of 2008. Probably the earliest I would get around to playing it even if it were out.

I am sure some new races and creatures will follow after that. I think they have done a lot in the past year. But then again, I expected it to be a marathon and not a sprint to the finish.

You have to see it from a different perspective: How much money did you already spend on Battlelore this year?
DoW is also concerned that Battlelore is too expensive for many gamers if the pace of new releases is too high. So in a sense the slow down is a wanted effect!

This is the effect of collectable gaming on the wargame/boardgame scene!
Since WizKids and Mageknight/Heroclicks/(etc)clicks and D&D Mini's people expect a constant expansion to every game. I can't wait till some company snaps up the rights to Collectable Monopoly (Ultra-rare $10000 bills and the holograpic painted shoe! My collection is complete! What do you MEAN another expansion!!!)
I enjoy Memoir AND Battlelore and enjoy comtemplating new unit ideas, but it is a complete and enjoyable game as is. Noone asks for Risk expansion packs. I myself would enjoy fantasy versions of artillery as well as flying units and monsters. But only if they work within the current rules. This game is meant to be rules-lite.

I'm in that same feeling as some that have posted here. I don't want to see this game get to be where there is too much to fast. I've spent quite a lot already on the game but won't mind spending a little more. If a game gets to be constant in the amount of expansions and changes coming out, I end up being turned off. If it is moderate in the amount of change it brings to the base game and spaced out nicely (so your not getting hit with new stuff constantly) I don't mind. So far BL has been just about right for me although I feel some of the packs (goblins) could have been combined.

I have been a Battlelore fan from the beginning and still am.

But I understand and share the feeling that it could have been more by this time. While I knew from the beginning that not every expansion would have a great impact on gameplay (and that's ok - they said it would be that way and some expansions would be minor) I did expect 1 or 2 a year to be major. I do not think we have gotten that... at least to the degree I thought we would. For example, the latest Dwarf expansion, while large, is no different than 3 or 4 small expansions.

Epic does change the tactics a little by giving more space (good for cavalry and archers... but pity the red infantry dragging all that equipment across the battlefield!).

I am suspecting (hoping) that the "Heroes" expansion that has been delayed until next year will be a major advance in creating a greater fantasy world environment. It might even be that that is part of the reason for the delay... getting everything to work smoothly and elegantly. If not, I still will enjoy the game. It is a great game on its own merit right now. But I will be somewhat let down without a major upgrade of some sort.

Between BattleLore, Memoir' 44, and C&C:Ancients, Richard Borg is likely a very busy man. I can hardly keep up with all the stuff he's putting out for these titles!

I'm kinda astounded that folks really think it needs constant pizazz from the publishers and that all the stuff we have to date somehow isn't enough or that the game is languising. I guess that's great news for DoW and Richard: there are fans that want and only trust them for BattleLore stuff and they can't get it fast enough.

The system is open ended: you can make up your own stuff (true, it won't be "official") and try it out with friends and share it with the community!

Ack! Monopoly is already collectible -- just think of each boxed game as just part of one huge collectible set. Look at the long list of Monopoly games here on BGG: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/metasearch.php?searchtype=game&...
or look at the website of a Monopoly collector: http://www.monopoly.geoffandderick.com/

I'm not dissapointed because they didn't come out with yet another new thing. I was dissapointed that they didn't deliver something (heroes) that was basically promised from the very beginning.

It was never promised from the beginning (at least the timing). Their exact term was "we hope to get it out by the end of the year." And the expansion hasn't been cancelled; merely delayed a couple months. So where's the broken promise?

Wow, a game company missing a self-imposed deadline? Inconceivable!!!

And don't forget the remake of battle Cry, which I presume is going to be under the Eagle Games' banner within the next 2 years. And still waiting for C&C: Napoleanics to surface.

The promise was implied in that blank spot on your war council sheet that reads "guest" and shows a big ?.

It was also explicit from the link on page 4 of the rule book and the web site at http://www.battlelore.com/heroes that did read "Coming in 2007!" until they changed it late in the year.

Wow. I'm surprised how much grown men can act like spoiled children who don't get what they want when they want it. I guess I've been around long enough to realize in all aspects of life there are delays for many different reasons, especially in gaming. This is certainly the case in video games where they push back release dates constantly, it happens in film due to lengthened shooting periods as things can go wrong. It is life.

This is a quality product and they put out many new products this year. They put a blog out which outlined some of their future thoughts on the product line. They sound pretty transparent and open with respect to their plans without putting even further details out so that people can whine about it when it doesn't happen perfectly as it should in their perfect world.

I guess the way I look at it is...what is whining about it going to get you?? If you don't appreciate what the company is delivering, move onto another system or game, don't buy future expansions. Ask for a refund on your current product. If you think you can create a better product then do so, otherwise you are at the mercy of the creators and you get what they give.

They should just have their employees take a dump in a booster pack and sell it so that you people have something to buy.

Wielding the grown men/spoiled children stick is a little odd considering we're all posting our thoughts on an obscure web site about boardgames. My criticism is less about my personal wants (believe me I've got enough interest in obtaining and playing the new Essen games to give two sh*ts about whether BattleLore hits the table lately) and more about a somewhat surprising criticism of DoW as a company. They are a great company who I see as a leader, on many fronts, in this industry. For them to falter in a plan that they had for a flagship product must say something about them, or even the industry. What that is I don't yet know and I was hoping others could shed some light. But since the topic was brought up I wasn't going to let the facts of that failed plan just go by without consideration.

I have to disagree that somehow interest in games as a hobby is childish. Billion dollar sports and the millions of grown folks that live and die by those teams are just games.

I guess I'm just more of a fatalist in that what will be will be and I have to agree with the previous poster that this was a self imposed deadline that they have missed.

I guess people can waste time on useless threads complaining about it but was there some further point. I guess the title of the thread should have been, "To complain without further purpose."

Also, I'd like to add that the OP's post to start this was within the right spirit and then it got highjacked into a complaint topic. The original post was a worthwhile discussion, IMHO.

I agree with blindspot. You can call us spoiled children, but the fact remains that DOW depicted a game system that started extremely promising, and with a game that I would want to play any minute, but that has lost some of its momentum because the latest expansions haven't done much to the game itself. My main enthousiasm has shifted to other games, which I don't mind at all (having a lot of fun with Starcraft and Race to the Galaxy lately). I will be sucked back in with an expansion that will refresh the game, but I will pass on more dwarven specialist packs.
