Hi,

I have the Descartes french version of the game and the set up for the basic rules says I only have to use the 33 white cards. However all the cards (those 33 and the 10 cards from the extensions) are white.

So my question is easy : which are the 10 cards I should not use for a basic game ?

Thanks for your answer,
Cedrox.

I don't have the Descartes version, but this is what the base Treachery card deck consists of:

Treachery Deck:
A. 25 cards playable only in battle:
- 4 Projectiles (Chrysknife, Stunner, Maula Pistol, Hunter-Seeker)
- 4 Shields
- 4 Poisons (Chaumas, Chaumurky, Ellaca Drug, Gom Jabbar)
- 4 Snoopers
- 1 Lasegun
- 3 Cheap Hero(ines)
- 5 Worthless Cards (Trip to Gamont, Jubba Cloak, La La La, Baliset, Kulon)
B. 8 cards playable at certain times:
- 2 Truth Trances
- 1 Weather Control
- 1 Hajr Card
- 1 Tleilaxu Ghola
- 1 Family Atomics
- 2 Karama Cards

I hope that helps you out in playing the game, because the spice must flow!

Thank you very much.
I conclude the 10 cards from the extensions are :

- 1 snooper
- 1 shield
- 1 poison (1 more Ellaca drug)
- 1 projectile (slip-tip)
- 1 machine to collect spice (don't know the translation)
- 1 residual poison
- 1 worthless card (Ya ! Ya ! Yawm)
- 1 card 'Kull Wahad'
- 1 card 'Silent cone'
- 1 thumper

Time to play now

I'm glad that you are sticking with the basic game.
The expansions suck and throw off the balance of what is already a perfect game.

Basic game + optional rules - advanced rules = perfect game of Dune.

Once you have played that formula out and your gaming group has grown bored and jaded with it through massive familiarity, then go ahead and fiddle with the crappy expansions. The biggest problems with the expansions is the fact that you won't realize how much they throw the game off until you are very familiar with the basic game, and that they draw the game out and cause the playtime to make the already long game even less accessible.

The translation for machine to collect spice is "Harvester".

I basically agree with you! I never use the Duel Expansion as it is intended. I do, however, add the Treachery cards from the Duel Expansion. Residual Poison is a really cool card!

I agree that there are some cool treachery cards out there (I have The Duel, Spice Harvest, and the expansion cards from Duel #1), but I hesitate to add them as it will throw off the mix. Maybe someday when I get some time I'll consider doing the math and making sure to maintain the ratio of Karama, Useless, Weapon/Defense and Other cards, but for now I'm just fine avoiding temptation and using the basic set.

For the benefit of the uninitiated: I'd say that (in general) adding a few other cards shouldn't jack things too badly, but the ratio of the cards I listed above is important to maintain - although screwing with the game in this way is MUCH less harmful than using one or both of the expansions in full.
