Had a situation today where one bug overlapped an enemy bug without actually touching it (with the support of a friendly bug it simply hung half a millimeter above it). From a bird's perspective it was overlapping, which is the only criteria for a capture in the rules. So, is this a capture or not?

From the rulebook:
"when any portion of a piece overlaps an enemy piece, the enemy piece is captured."
The only requirement is that they overlap...it doesn't say anything about "touching". So sounds like a kill to me.
I know if I tried to tell my 5 year old son (who loves the game) that he didn't kill my bug because he was actually 1 mm above the bug, I would never get away with it.

The bird's view is what it takes to determine a capture. If by looking at the bugs from above they overlap, then it's a capture.

Thanks for the quick reply
I have another question though, what happens if a centaurion is lying with its special side up on top of a friendly bug and an enemy bug lands on top of them both, touching only the centaurion? Is the bottom bug removed?

I would say that the bottom bug is not removed. If however the enemy bug is overlapping the Centurion and the friendly bug, then the friendly (bottom) bug is captured, but the Centurion does not get captured.

Exactly. If the bottom bug is not overlapped looking from above (i.e.: it is completely 'covered' by the Centurion), then it is not captured.

Just what i thought, thanks again
. Here's yet another question, which came up today: What happens if the moving bug moves an enemy base and ends its movement on the spot the base used to be? The rules state that if bases are moved they return to their original position. So is it a capture? or is it a misfire and the moving bug is returned to its original position?

The player who owns the base repositions it back on it's spot, then the base owner repositions the bug such that some part of it touches the base. This does not count as a base capture.

We reposition the base and place the bug right next to it instead of overlapping it. I don't think the rules explicitly tell you what to do with the bug.

Francesco, you said "If the bottom bug is not overlapped looking from above (i.e.: it is completely 'covered' by the Centurion), then it is not captured."
Is the definition of overlapped then: One counter having any part of itself on top of a another counter as viewed from above with an UNOBSTRUCTED 'view' down onto it? Also do friendly units 'obstruct' the view?
Much appreciation to you for a great game for all ages and to the OP of this thread for a useful subject line rather than 'rule question' or 'help me'
