I hear you're not allowed to attend unless either you've designed a SDJ winner involving elves, or you host a popular series of video reviews wearing a kilt.

Attendance is pretty small.

You have to be nominated by someone that has been attending the Gathering for a certain amount of time and then that nomination has to be seconded by someone else that has been going for a certain amount of time as well.

I'm guessing the invitation system is to maintain the "friend" feel of Gathering of Friends.

From what I've heard, the feel and size of the con is very similar to BGG.CON.

So why the sudden reappearance Steve? Not enough nasty over at FAT? Or do you just feel like trolling?

I am not a fan of mr weeks, but he seems to have 'grown up' since his reappearance. Its those that have been attacking him looking like the immature trolls in my opinion.
This question doesn't exactly ring as genuine. If you've been around gamers and BGG at all, even if you've been busy with your work, you know it's an invitation-only event that is private.

Sort of like the suspended Three Day Frolick, only a lot bigger.

In this thread at least, I don't think anybody attacked him. There were three "joke" answers (one of which was mine, based on the fact that the only two attendees I know of are Alan Moon and Scott Nicholson), and a few "do you seriously want to know?" type posts, and that's it.

SO I am a little confused, can someone tell me why this is invitation only? Is it because of space limitations?

I've always thought it was because it was private and elite. What more needs to be understood?

No I think the ones above are fine, it is just the one I quoted and the others I have seen in the geeklists others I have seen.

I dunno James, the topic, subject and tone all have earmarks of trolling.

Besides, I am immature, so there.

The question is genuine. Go back and read the entire post sir. I know it is invitation only, my question is HOW do you get an invitation and why exactly is it invitation only.

I think Chad has given you the answers to these questions.

It's invite-only because that's the way Alan wants it. It's Alan's show and he's been putting it on for a long time, and he runs it how he wishes. That's the best answer I can come up with. Aldie and I interviewed him, and he answered some questions along these lines, if you're interested in hearing them.

It is odd how you've been much more active on the 'Geek lately, Steve. What happened to the 'Geek community being filled with asshat'ery?

After about twenty minutes of silent meditation, the Inner Light moves one of the Friends to stand and say, "If we invited Steve Weeks, do you think he'd understand why we're not all that into wargaming?"

Then he sits down again.

I have to say I've always wondered the same thing, but knew it was somewhat pointless to ask.

It's like a menu without prices on it. If you have to ask you should know you are in a place you shouldn't be at.

So the teacher told Mr. Weeks to sit down in his desk and a strange look came over his face and his eye slightly twitched.

One of my regrets is that Monty Python never really got together with Peter Sellers.

Haven't seen it, but I'll put it in my Netflix queue. Love Peter Sellers.

As for attending the GoF, you'd probably fit in a lot more than you think.

Clearly you haven't been to many Cons.

Sit at 6 or 7 random tables and you will get some unwashed troglodyte who is wearing birkenstocks with no socks and is eating some form of garbage (along with your meeples) and loudly discussing his D&D character.

God bless private events.

No, I am not Impuning the sandal-wearers or the attendees of GoF, as I am not one of them and I cannot speak to the attendees themselves.

However, its pretty basic knowledge of human nature that the public is a terrifying and horrible thing when gathered together. So, the desire to filter out the people who will show up and scream at people and flip tables over is a natural one.

(I knew thats why they never invited me :'( )

It only takes a quick look through Gathering pictures to see that the fat, the dirty, the unwashed, and the plain old ugly are just as welcome there as any other Con.

I'm fairly sure that beauty and diet aren't requirements for an invite.

That's mostly true, except for the unwashed part. Very rare exceptions to this, unlike many other cons I've been to. Maybe Alan screens for that or something.

jgerman wrote:
And are you seriously implying that people that wear socks with sandals are HIGHER class than those that don't?

Amen!!! Never mind remaining uninvited from conventions, these people should be rounded up and shot.

I was wondering myself how Weeks suddenly got blessed with the right to post again. Hacked it probably.

As for asshat'ery on BGG, it's alive and well... as evidenced by just a few asshat comments on this very thread:

Whups! Scratch that last one... Magdar is in no way an asshat. As for the others, yes, yes they are being asshats. And some of them are even people I normally don't associate with asshat'ery. Go figure.
