Legions get a modifier when fighting in clear terrain. Do villages in clear terrain hexes count as clear terrain for purposes of this rule?

I know... rules lawyering. My take is it counts, but an opponent a long time ago claimed otherwise. I recently dusted off my copy, and the memories returned.

To me, "Clear" terrain is exactly as listed in the TEC, i.e., *nothing* else in the hex. I think this makes sense, since a village is certainly a feature that would affect combat. If you were to say that a village is clear terrain, then by extension that would mean a fort hex is also clear, which seems unlikely. That said, if we apply this to a road hex, it wouldn't be clear terrain either! Clearly there is room for interpretation. I'd say villages, forts and temples are not clear, since they are structures affecting the layout of the battlefield, while roads in clear hexes should be condsidered clear terrain since there's not structure to render it not clear.

Btw, I checked my old Generals and found no clarifications for this, so no help there.....

Agreed. Clear means nothing at all. There is at least one other modifier for villages iirc.

I don't even understand the argument. Clear terrain designates an area where you can take no cover, and nothing impedes your movement. A village certainly provides cover and impedes movement.

There was a section under fortifications, which states that if Romans come out of their fortifications in a village hex to engage a moving German force, they will not receive the legion in clear modifier "as a village is not a clear hex".

So, yes a village in a hex negates the modifier.

No combat modifier for village. But there is one for the Germans in a temple hex.
