My father, Jim Musser, passed away today after a long battle with Cirrhosis. Jim spent most of his life working as an editor and journalist for the Chicago Tribune, but his real passion was games. He contributed to many aspects of the gaming industry; as a game designer for Mayfair Games; as a writer and editor for Mayfair, FASA, and TSR; and as a game store owner and manager in Chicago.
And of course as a gamer. I was pretty well doomed as he introduced me to both board games and role-playing games almost as soon as I could read. Thank you father for a wonderful hobby. Who knows, perhaps some of his unpublished games will see the light of day yet.
Credits: Game Designer for Mayfair Games: Designer of Alibi, Road to the Whitehouse, and the re-design of Cosmic Encounter and its expansions.
Editor for Mayfair Games: DC Heroes and Chill product lines
Editor and writer for FASA: Battletech, Shadowrun, Star Trek, and Renegede Legion lines
Editor and writer for TSR: AD&D: Tales of Enchantment Forgotten Realms: Cormyr
Retail: owned The Gamer's Place in Oak Park, Illinois managed The Emperor's Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois

My condolences on your loss. That's quite a diverse and interesting resume. I'm familiar with most of those products, and ran the Chill RPG for my gaming group in the military.
I think that it's pretty cool that he had a body of work that will keep his name in circulation for years to come. Being remembered by future generations of gaming geeks is a wonderful thing. (IMHO)

I've owned or played and enjoyed over half of the titles you've listed. I am thankful for the joy your father helped bring to my life although he and I never met in person or really knew of one another. That's one of the many things that makes this world amazing. Every time we talk about or play Chill now (one of my friends *loves* the game), I'll think of your father.
My own dad is guilty of introducing me to boardgames (Tactics II, woohoo!), although he later regretted it since that's where all my money was spent. He passed away when I was 22, over 9 years ago. And you know what, gaming helped me cope and escape, and some of those games were edited by your father. It's such a small world in so many different ways. Thank you for sharing.

The Gaming Community was a better place for having had the priviledge of sharing your father with you and sadly today is worse off for having also lost him. Condolences to you and your entire family.

I'm really sorry to hear this, Karl. I used to game with Jim fairly regularly when I lived in the Chicago area (not since 1999). I think you were there once, too.
He was always fun to game with and he often had interesting prototypes to try. I well remember the game on the development of the American auto industry and the game which had a card for every railroad in the 19th century US (I've never seen so many cards). He will be missed.

Hello, can you run as fast as me? I hope not, because if you catch me I will thrash you!

I'm very sorry for your loss. Alibi has long been my wife's most requested game to play, and a few years ago I made sure to buy her a nearly endless supply of replacement pads.
