A recent thread http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/2249896 was filled with trollish posts which made it difficult to find the answers that were related to the original post. It could have been some kind of (unwanted) humour, but it made it difficult and time-consuming to follow the thread. Therefore, I flagged those posts (17!) as inappropriate.
However, I got a somewhat unfriendly reply from Matthew M. Monin (Octavian):
> The vast majority of posts you have flagged as being violations are in > no way in violation of our posting guidelines. Please stop abusing the > system. If you do not wish to see such posts please use the Personal > Hide option.
I replied:
>I disagree. These posts were in NO WAY related to the subject and highly > trollish in character. Please stop abusing your function as moderator. > They were annoying and their large quantity made it difficult to find > those answers which were indeed related to subject. No I do not > understand and I didn't abuse the system. A copy has been sent to > Aldie.
So it seems that there are moderators who defend the abuse of threads by people who would be called in German "kindische Selbstdarsteller" -- childish self-promoters.
What do you think?
Addendum:
Your remarks are very interesting, indeed.

While I agree with the general idea of reporting inappropriate posts, there doesn't seem to be anything that violates the posting guidelines in the thread you referenced. So, it seems admins have gotten it right.
IOW, just because a post annoys you personally does not take it to the level where that post needs to be removed. If it does annoy you, there is a recourse: you may simply hide the post or (I believe) even hide all that users posts.

I'd be willing to guess you're not the only blanket-trolling person around here that he sent a message to today, but perhaps were the only one serious about who you flagged. I'm sure Octavian can not know your motives.
The flags are, as far as I can tell, for something "really offensive" (i.e. porn or simply trashing PR for the hell of it). For these more minor "violations," the admin seem to look at them on a case by case basis, and probably get sick of looking at them.

Somebody raises a newspaper article related to gaming. Some other people come in with humourous comments. You may have preferred a more serious, academic discussion of the subject but that was not the way the thread went.
This happens with conversations as well. When the topic or tone of a conversation changes, do you shout "STOP! YOU HAVE ALL GOT THIS WRONG" and tell everyone to discuss the subject you want, or in the tone you want? If you do then I would imagine few people discuss anything with you twice.

How do you say "takes things too seriously" in german? I am really confused as to what could possibly be considered trolling in that thread. I saw nothing even remotely close.

Ralf, I don't think there was anything wrong with the responses and agree with the moderator. If you found them offensive that says more about you than their posts. In future if you don't want any humourous responses to your posts here at BGG I suggest that you either
a) Write in your posts that you only want serious responses (which may not work anyway)
b) accept that BGG isn't the forum for you
c) Use the personal hide function as suggested to you
Hope that helps

From Wikipedia:
Quote: An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.
On that particular list, there was nothing there that I would find baiting, or something that would envoke someone typing a response in anger to defend their point.

Nothing in the posts was inappropriate or trollish. I thought they were mostly funny, and quite affectionate regarding gaming in general and the game in question in particular. I do agree that the BGG mods can be less than friendly sometimes, but honestly I believe your definition of "trolling" or "hijacking" needs to be reconsidered.
If 17 humorous posts (which were at least marginally related to the topic) presented such difficulty in a thread of only 2 pages... well, good luck finding any web forum free of that issue, dude.

Ralf, MMM has some *crappy* bedside manner, no question. I don't know why.
I always figure that he's real quiet in real life. He'd have to be.
But, joking aside, the guy puts in a *lot* of effort and time here, even when he comes off as a jerk, so please consider cutting him some Major Slack (and there's nothing you can do about it anyway, so it's worth a shot). Me... I'd get all pissy and moany, too, and I do, really, but still.
Appreciate the Amazing Time and Effort. I do.

I fail to see "trollish behavior" anywhere in that thread. Making a joke does not make you a troll.

Ralf, I think you might garner some sympathy if the example thread you cite was even remotely representative of what you're talking about. The thread in question asks no question. The OP posted an item of general interest that naturally exposes an amusing aspect to experienced boardgamers. Unsurprisingly, the sarcastic and humerous nature of many BGGers quickly took a bite. Except for a bevy of, "hmmm, that's interesting," I think the thread evolved as would be expected.
As for threads where the OP does ask a question, my experience is that most of the responses are helpful. Indeed, as you say, there tends to be a race for the first grin-generating quip, but I find these little nuggets amusing and often very funny. It's a simple matter to quickly skim over the less witty ones (mea culpa). I don't see the same problem you do and certainly not as tragically.

Something is wrong here... There were no questions raised in the original post about the 3000 year-old board game!?! So how is he having difficulty finding the answers?
Or have my reading skills been trashed by all the trollish posts?
The link to the post must be wrong?

violentzen wrote: I think you need to unclench and get a sense of humor. Now THAT was a personal attack.
But, seriously, as others have said and this poster implies, the non-serious posts in the thread you cited were just high spirits and good-natured fun. Nothing offensive, abusive, etc. Just 'geeks showing off their silly sides and cracking wise. I was going to make some sort of wise-acre remark here myself, but with your bar for offensive posts set so low, it just isn't worth it.

Not intending to pile on here but I agree with what everyone is saying. This sight is not a militant information reporting site. It is a place where the posters have fun and joke around. If all you want it "the facts" this may not be the best place for you.

How interesting that you found that thread annoying. That type of thread is the precise reason and the perfect example of why I love BGG. It was an intelligent and interesting topic mixed with humorous comments and responses. Hooray for BGG!
