Are sea zones counted "spaces" for determining distance between spaces in context of debaters' bonuses?
In other words does Cranmer's bonus apply to Berwick, Edinbourgh, Calais, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Bremen and Hamburg?

Completely off the cuff, I'd say no, but I'm too lazy to find a citation in the rules. laugh

I would say no. Rulebook 2.1 says that all spaces in the game are either fortified or unfortified and goes on to give descriptions of the various fortified spaces. Section 16 "Naval Affairs" says that naval units move, etc. in the sea zones and ports of the map the same as land units do in the spaces of the map. Finally, section 2 "Game Map" describes how the map is made up of square, circular, hexagonal and eight-pointed symbols called "spaces". It goes on to say that some "spaces" are also ports which allow access to a series of areas called "sea zones". So, sea zones are not "spaces" and, if I recall correctly, all the debater bonuses giving a bonus die in reformation/counter-reformation attempts refer to "spaces" (i.e. within 2 spaces of Geneva or Paris, etc.).

That's my two cents anyway.

Tangential to this question. In our current 'Newbies' game on ACTS, the folllowing situation came up.

Turn 2 - Protestants have 9 spaces in Germany, but noneof the are ports.
Pope uses Leipzig debate to have Eck go against Tyndale. (English language debate, Luther can't join with HiS). In the event Eck beats Tyndale by two points, and gets two flips in Germany. However, if he had lost, the protestant would not have gained any flips in England (or indeedm anywhere), since no German protestant spaces are yet connected to England.

So, boo hoo for the protestant (me). But wait till he sees what I have up my sleeve for the next impulse!

Yes, the Protestant would have gained spaces- if it is not possible to flip spaces in the target language zone then they are flipped in any other language zone (including spaces outside language zones).

Nope, look again, Philip, at:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/258238

in particular at Ed's answer:

Quote:
"Once all spaces in the chosen language zone are flipped to the winning denomination, additional hits are then used to flip spaces in any other language zone."

You don't have "all spaces in the chosen language zone". Sorry!
