I have a number of Ref. attempts from some event. Have I to decide which debater's bonus use (or don't use any) before first attempt? Or I can resolve some attempts and then use a bonus for remaining ones?

You can pull in the debater's bonus at any time.

What about Carlstadt? I had understood that you couldn't publish a treatise and roll your two attempts, then flip Carlstadt for a third. That would allow you to avoid putting unrest markers if you failed the first two tries - or else you'd have to put them down retroactively, but what if the unrest from the first attempt would have changed the situation for your second attempt?
So I'm assuming you mean that you can activate people who give you +1 die in the middle of the action, not people like Carlstadt whose power is supposed to affect the whole action.

Greg: Agreed. The same would be true of Cajetan or Calvin, since all of their attempts must be taken in the same language zone.

That's great news, because on Sunday I stopped the Protestant from using Carlstadt retroactively, and I would hate to think I was wrong!
But after you said debater bonuses that grant extra dice can be used after the action has started, I didn't expect you'd say Cajetan and Calvin can't be used retroactively. If you did your first two in the same language zone, nothing's lost in terms of breaking rules by letting you flip them for a third one in the same zone.
Of course, it makes a difference because you might make different choices about which spaces to target if you knew in advance you'd committed to making three tries. So if that's the reason to ban using them in mid-action, fine. I'm just saying that if the rule is going to be "debater bonuses can be activated in mid-action as long as they don't have rules implications for reformation attempts that have already occurred," that wouldn't really impede the use of Cajetan or Calvin.
Not that I care either way, just asking.

Well, and what about Tetzel? May he be commited after resolving 1 attempt? Or even after 2 (i. e. all) attempts?
