Foot units CC fight with 3 dice downhill and from hill to hill.
All units CC fight with 2 dice uphill.
So, Auxilia on hills are as powerfull as Medium and Heavies.
If you have problems about the use of Auxilia (which seem disadvantaged, as they cannot evade, and have less punch than heavier foot), put them on hills.

... and don't make your Mediums and Heavies attack hills, if possible.

One of my opponents gave me fits in a river crossing scenario. His light units bellied up to my Mediums when I tried to cross the river. I think this was in the 2nd Expansion.

Sure. The problem often stated about Auxilia, is that they cannot evade, and thus take heavy losses when facing mediums or heavies.

I find interesting that Auxilia are equals to their usual enemies when fighting on hills.
If I play Ilerda again, I will concentrate the auxilias to the hill fighting, and go around the hillock with the nasty heavies and mediums, looking for "flat, easy" battlefield zones for them...
