Is there anywhere I can get a decent Subbuteo ruleset that adequately explains all the rules for someone who isn't necessarily that well versed in the sport?
I have like the official Subbuteo federation rules, but thats for tournament play, and in truth, hard for me to understand. Since it uses lots of terms related to the sport i'm not familiar with.
Is there like a nice casual ruleset I can download covering shooting, throw ins, fouls, goalie rules, etc?

Have a look at these two pages:
http://subbuteo.iougs.com/rules.shtml - starts with Subbuteo 101 and moves on from there.
http://subbuteo.iougs.com/subbuteo-woodentop-quick-rules.pdf - the "Woodentop" quick rules.
I would suggest forgetting about Offside rules, at least until you have played the game a few times.

Thanks guys.
All I had was the FISTF rules, this is much better and looks to be leading me in the right direction

Meanwhile, if you need any help with what specific terms mean - post here, and I will try to help. I am not a football fan, but being British, I probably know more than I realise!
I did used to play Subbuteo, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
A bit of trivia... the game designer originally wanted to call the game "The Hobby", but was unable to get a trademark on the name. As he was also a bird enthusiast, he called it Subbuteo, after "Falco subbuteo", the latin name for the the bird commonly called the Hobby.

I found a .pdf of some HASBRO UK rules that actually showed the playing pitch and named all the areas.
I haven't found any rules yet for setting up the players at the start of the game (before any flicks are taken) and only one ruleset i've looked at (haven't looked at the FITSF in awhile) talks about how you determine who begins the game in possession of the ball!

Wes - there is a group of guys over in St. Louis who play subbuteo frequently and have a league. If you ever want to learn more about the game or give it a try at some point, you should check out their website and forum at: http://www.stlsubbuteo.com/
You can also check out You Tube for videos showing games in progress. This is a good way to learn beginning setups and how to control the men.
For starting the game, we will have one player hide the ball in the palm of one hand and then let the other player guess which hand it is in. If he gets it right then he decides whether to take possession or to defer until the 2nd half.
