The 2008 Golden Geek Winner in the categories of 2-Player Game and Wargame is... a game released in 1996. Yup, that makes a lot of sense.

Predictable, logical, and makes the Spiel des Jarres awards look ridiculous.

??? The Spiel des Jahres aims to award a game with broad appeal; in practical terms, a family game. The 2007 Golden Geek Family game winner was Zooloretto - the 2007 SdJ award winner. The 2008 GG Family game winner was Thebes - nominated for the 2007 SdJ.

Congrats to Uwe and Agricola as well as every other game and designers

Does that mean that Uwe is gonna issue a W-deck for Agricola for his win on the 2008 Golden geek survey?

I bet 1960 would have won if we used an electoral college instead of a popular vote.

Maybe I've been out of the loop on this one, but I consider the results of the two-player game category to be a shocking upset. 1960 is a Top 20 game, for goodness sake, and while Hannibal is equally highly ranked, it is a 12-year-old design. I guess the original had been so hard to get that the remake allowed a lot of people to experience it for the first time. Still, it was very surprising; I'd considered a 1960 victory to be in the "sun rises in the east" and "Agricola wins GotY" category. That, as they say, is why they play the games.
Of course, this means that 1960 is now eligible to win the award next year! Kookie, no?

First award for Valley Games I believe? Congratulations go out to them.
They seemed to have had quite the journey in getting Hannibal out so it looks like the effort was worth it.

And what was the runner-up in the wargames category?
Btw: congrats to valley games for Hannibal, even though I think a new game should have won. Maybe a new category: Best Rerelease?

No ... Hannibal is ranked at 15, 5 higher than 1960 ... and after 12 years that's a hell of a rank.
It's rank rose after the Valley Games re-release (IIRC)
They're both good games, but 1960 sits on the shelf after a year ... Hannibal doesn't.
Don't disrespect Hannibal, if you're a gamer, seek it out and give it a try. You'll be glad you did.
