So I can't figure out how to post a reply to a forum entry or game review without providing a subject. The options I have available are quickquote, quickreply, quote and reply. Each of these require a subject, and then my posts look different than the others (and who wants to be different). If I try to leave the subject blank, the post is rejected because the subject is too short.

How do others reply to entries without supplying a subject.

Thanks in advance for helping a newbie.

- Ryan

Just don't delete the subject name that appears there by default.

I'll be damned
Never noticed that before.

Might I enquire why you are deleting the subject line in the first place?

Sweet. It was so easy it was not at all obvious. We'll see if this works.

In my analness, I didn't want it to show up and in the preview (before you submit) it shows the subject even though after you submit it doesn't. So in my effort to fit in, I hosed myself.

Thanks again.

You see the subject in any post that you are directly linked to. When you reply, you are directly linked to your new reply.

Look at the following links from this same thread:

/article/3115963#3115963
/article/3117715#3117715
/article/3120148#3120148

You'll see the subject in each of those posts directly linked to, but the only other posts to have the subject included are those where someone changed the subject line. This post that I am replying to will not have the subject line above it.

test.

I'm trying to post without "replying" to someone's comment.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but my take is that you don't want the bold repetition of the title that appears when your comment posts. As Octavian says, it only shows when you directly link to the post. This is so someone reading on subscription doesn't have to go to the top of the page to get the title of the thread (though it also appears in the page/tab title).

So, unless you want to change the name of the thread, due to topic drift or something, just do nothing. The title will only appear when it's needed by someone reading from the middle of the thread.

Testing if I can write a comment without "RE: How to post a Comment without a Subject" appearing.

Edited: Obviously I failed. I don't get it.

Edited: NOW I get it (I think).

Assuming you got back here, you're here from a subscription to the thread. That has linked to my message, so my message has a subject and your message does not.

The message linked to always shows its subject.

"Posted", at the bottom of each message, is also a link to each message. Click on "Posted" on any message above and my subject will disappear, and that message will show its subject.

It confuses many people, but it has 2 good effects:
1. Whenever you follow a link, you see the thread title, without having to scroll up to the top of the page.
2. You don't have to see the same subject at the top of every message, again and again.
